" We changed our booking to the tichka... "

We changed our booking to the tichka salam after reading reviews of our previous choice, and were really glad we did. The staff, from cleaners to concierge, were more than friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were consistently good no matter what time we went down and, on the few occasions we ate in the evening, the meals were excellent if a little pricey. I realise that we were there at a relatively quiet time of year, but feel that the attitude of the various staff we had dealings with was such that busier times should be equally as good. Our room was large and comfortable, with a balcony overlooking the pool, and fairly quiet all the time. ( except for the dawn and evening chorus from the resident bird population ).

We walked into the centre of Marrakech many times and it took about 40 minutes at a steady pace. A petit taxi cost 30 - 40 dirhams for the same journey and at hotter times of the year would be money well spent. A walk to Gueliz ( the new town ) took about 15 - 20 minutes ( 25 dirhams petit taxi ) and there were plenty of cheaper restaurants to choose from. Our favourite was Charlie's Cabana.

Other recommended things to do include bargaining in the souks, at least one evening in Jemma el Fna square or if not on one of the terraces overlooking it, a day using the open top buses, both routes, a visit to Menara gardens and, if there for more than a few days, a day trip to Essouaria and another into the Atlas mountains.

A few recommended cafe's :- Cafe des negociants and cafe des livres in Gueliz. Cafe de france and cafe arganna in Jemma el Fna. Kozibar in place des ferblantiers in the Medina.

We decided January was an excellent time to visit. Not too hot, but very pleasant and the pool at Tichka Salam still perfectly usable. Not too busy, but still enough people around to give a good atmosphere.

Only negatives were the constant need to haggle in the souks. Exciting at first but novelty soon wares off. Nothing has a price, only what you can eventually agree upon. Constant begging. You can't give to everyone so how do you choose ?

" The hotel is located on the entrance... "

The hotel is located on the entrance to Marrakech and is just a few minutes' drive from the city centre.

Personally, I believed it to be the best place to stay. It has a lovely main restaurant.

Even when entering the lobby, it is all very welcoming and relaxing.

The rooms are clean, with medium to large bedrooms and come with all mod cons (TV, shower, iron, etc).

" A very good, clean hotel with... "

A very good, clean hotel with friendly, smiling &helpful staff to provide excellent service. Arabic and French are the main languages but there are English speakers at reception. Breakfasts are great (literally!), buffet style, wide selection from fresh fruit to the full hot English all of high quality. The pool and patio area (where you can sit and eat if you wish) are very clean, calm and relaxing.

There are few shops in the immediate vicinity but there is a wide selection in town where the main attraction is the square Djemma El Fna and amazing Souk. Taxis from outside the hotel are available at very modest cost especially if you are prepared to haggle (they are disappointed if you don't!).

A variety of excursions can be booked to some fascinating places. We really enjoyed our stay.

" The hotel was very clean and tidy,... "

The hotel was very clean and tidy, the staff were very friendly, considering it was difficult to communicate with them due to the language barrier. The restaurant and bar in the hotel were very expensive, so I would recommend to eat out every night. The breakfast are pretty special with everything from fresh fruit to a fry-up.
Marrakech itself is on of the most amazing places I have seen, at night it alive bright lights and so many people trying to earn a living selling anything from fruit juice to designer shoes. The people were pretty friendly, a basic knowledge of the French language would be a great help as that is there 2nd language.
