Very nice holiday but not 4*
from FrancoisD
Just came back from the Blau on Feb 15. I was going there wondering how some people could come up with 5* reviews while others were quite negative. I understand better now... Expectations are set pretty high at this resort which is advertised as a to-be 5*. It is not a 5*, may be 4* if you have a newly renovated room, more like 3* if you do not... Big deceptions: 1) kids club: I was travelling by myself with my kids aged 3 and 5. To be able to leave the kids an hour or two each day at the club was key to me. Well, the nice kid's club is right by the pool and the doors of the fenced area do not close well and nobody (even adults taking a shortcut) bothers closing them down. With the pool about 5 feet away from one of the doors - I did not feel confortable at all in leaving my 3 yr old there. Although the ladies were nice and responsible, the activities were fairly limited. The kids parties at 20h30 nightly were excellent! 2) rooms: well, quite a few are not renovated. They are clean and spacious, but the unrenovated bathrooms look...unrenovated. Other small things went wrong: it took 4 calls for them to change a light bulb, a few small ants in the bathroom, had to wait a day to get a lock for the safe, rented a car on Sunday - the guy never showed up!!! What is nice: 1) beach and property is very nice, not crowded at all. I did not find rotten coconuts and-or animals. 2) very quiet and staff quite nice. 3) food was not sophisticated but good. No complaints. I wish they would serve more (and better) sea food but... Try the churros and the nice expressos or the coconut drinks - excellent. I had a couple of drinks and they were below average. So, in a nut shell, if you manage to get a renovated room (not sure how, get written confirmation from your agent may be???), do not expect a kid's club and are lucky to avoid the small things, your holiday could be 4* (not 5*, let's get real, here!). Weather was nice but quite windy, cool at night. I would go farther South in Jan + early Feb. On a different note, flying with Kelowna was quite good. On time both ways, decent meal, friendly staff - a pleasant surprise!
Good place to relax, without night life.

My wife and I returned from the Blau on the 13th of February, after being there 1 week. This place was nice to relax, but entertainment was extremely poor. There were a few activities during the day, and audience participation (night show) at night, that was about it. The disco was a nice facility but most of the times it was empty. Sometimes there was a Cuban band playing in the patio area. The beach was nice and clean with some seaweed; the water is cold at this time especially the pool. Out of 7 days we only had 1 calm day, the rest were always windy, this made water sports impossible. I hear that it’s always windy in this area. DO NOT leave your towels unattended, ourselves and another family that we met had our towels disappear, you will need to pay $15 Cuban dollars per towel to replace them when you checkout. If you are into snorkeling do NOT waste your money, we took a snorkeling tour and it was not worth it, I could have swim med to the area for free and much faster, we were the first out of 5 resorts to be picked up, it took almost an hour to pick everyone from all 5 resorts before we headed to the so called reefs, (I called it rocks). The rooms were clean but looked old especially the funiture, you could really smell the mold in the closet and the bed sheets/blankets, bring air fresheners. The grounds were very picturesque and very well kept; ALL the staff was great, always smiling and ready to help. What we really enjoyed was the variety and quality of food it was great; this includes the buffet restaurant and especially the seafood restaurant; the lobster is a must for seafood lovers. Do bring an insulated mug, this was a great idea and I thank everyone that mentioned it in the reviews that I read before leaving. Bring little items for the maid or anyone else, they really appreciate it. Overall it was nice, but once was enough for me. If you have any questions you can email me.

We booked a last minute package on line and are disappointed with the trip. At the airport we found out that we were flying JETSGO and it was our first time. No blankets, No pillows, No duty free, pop $2, individual movie $10, No music. Small meal provided by Sunwing. I would not fly JETSGO again. According to the brochure the refurbished Hotel was a four star. Problems from the start. Major pot holes in the road and walkways several people tripped and fell. Grounds were disgusting, dead birds, rotten coconuts, fallen and rotting palm leaves, and dead grass everywhere. Gym not cleaned no bathrooms, no change rooms, no drinking water, lights burned out, only 1 treadmill, five bikes, and small universal machine (max 125 lbs), dumbbells to max of 17 kilos. A least it was not busy. Other promised activities not available. No bikes, No boat ride in the lake, No archery, and etc. etc. etc.. Food in buffey was OK but very limited choices. Daily soup was excellent as were the speciality restraurants. Room was average but only saloon doors on bathroom and no dressers only one large cabinet with limited shelves. Beach was OK but needed a major clean up. Fortunately staff were friendly and not in your face asking for tips. I have been to CUBA 5 times and this was the worst trip ever. I will not go back to the Blau Colonial and will give it 1 star rating to all my friends.

Just returned from a 1 week stay on Februay 6th. Bring your children if you have any as this resort is full with children. We missed ours. This resort fulfilled my vacation needs. Very clean room, beautiful beach, great weather, very friendly staff (ask and they will help), drinks and food are fair. If you are not a picky eater, you may gain 10 lbs like me. Variety of meats such as fish, pork, some chicken, and very little beef all cooked differently each day. Great ice-cream varieties, cappuccino coffee and deep fried churros will certainly compensate for picky eaters. Entermaintment; nice band by the cafe, no big disco nightlife, and dance lessons at the pool daily. Advise, bring large coffee mugs to keep your favourite drinks chilled and avoid less trips to the bar….they use very small cups. Keep your cigars in your large luggage when checking in at the airport or you may lose them. Overall, the price fits the level of quality one expects.

We just spent a delightful week at the Blau. Despite the fact that renovations are underway to bring this up to a 5 star, the ongoing work did not interfere with our holiday. We had a wonderful ocean view which we enjoyed from our balcony. The beach was very clean and loungers always available. Our room was spotless and towels were changed daily. We enjoyed the the service at the specialty restaurants as well as the buffet. Staff everywhere were friendly and always smiling. Not all advertised amenities were available, however the daily water volleyball and soccer games were lots of fun. Like most things, you get back what you put in, so go and enjoy yourselves at this lovely spot. If possible take along some extras e.g. shampoo, toothpaste, t-shirts, as well as some candy and gum for the children. Packages of socks and underwear I'd taken for toddlers was most welcomed. We had gone to surprise my brother who was visiting from Scotland and was staying at the El Senador which was only a 15 minute walk along the beautiful beach. It was good to be able to see this other newer resort, however, he too preferred the lovely ambience at the Blau.
not a 4-star

Just returned from cuba January 21st. Went with my husband, our 2 children ages 3 and 7 and my husband's parents. This was our 4th trip to Cuba, first time at this resort. 1. Best feature is renovated rooms. Clean and large enough for the whole family. Many buildings not or only partially renovated, some without hot water... Fortunately not an issue fot us. 2. Food is overall good. One buffet restaurant rather small but no significant line-ups because the resort was not full. 3 A-la-Carte restaurants Seafood, Cuban, and Italian. We preferred the Italian. Would have preferred more restaurants but there is a big closed-off section being renovated although did not see many workers during our stay. Does not look like the big pool will re-open before next year at least. 3. Entertainment as mentionned in a number of reviews was non existant. No activities, very little supervision at the kids club. The children could come and go as they pleased without anyone noticing. Closed for ?lunch between 1pm and 3pm. Resort a 3.5 star. Would only return if we had a better deal and once renovations complete.

Just returned on Jan 15. A group of 6 which included our 4 year old daughter, 2 year old son and my mother-in-law and her friend. Nice place but needs more improvements (ie grounds, entertainment etc..). This is now my 5th trip to Cuba and I have noticed a huge change in the food for the better (a lot more greens and bigger variety). We tried all 3 A La Carte restaurants and our favourite was the Seafood. Just like the previous posting, we stayed in block #15 (rooms 1507 & 1508), this was a nice location, close to everything. Once again, very squeaky swinging doors going into the shower area. We used the crib all week, found no problems with it. I have to agree with the previous posting regarding the Animation team, they DID NOT EXIST. The only animation team I did see was at the dance lessons and at the mini kids club. The travel books stated that the mini club is for kids from ages 2 and up but when we got there the sign stated ages 4 and up. I was disappointed since I have a 2 year old. Once I saw the lack of supervision (1 young girl) and unsecured area (doors to fence area constantly left opened), I did not leave my kids without parent supervision. One more thing, NO HIGH CHAIRS in dining room, had to feed my son in the stroller. Only saw 1 high chair at the pool snack bar and 1 in the Italian-a-la-carte restaurant. Also, not very wheel chair or stroller accessible, lots of stairs and not enough ramps. Regarding nightly entertainment, I have to agree with the previous posting again, NO NIGHTLY ENTERTAINMENT. Apparently, the board states that there is nightly entertainment on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays but we did not see any other than the nightly band and the mini disco. This was very disappointing – nothing to do after dinner. Another disappointing factor was that the resort was ½ closed for renovations, therefore the salt swim up pool bar was closed as well. I would definitely go back to Cuba but not the Blau.
worth visiting

I just came back from this beautiful resort, after going through some renovations and being closed for 8 months, it is now open full swing, only problem at the moment is the hot water which seems to come on late in the evening. All the resturants are open, seafood and Cuban alternate days Ital open daily for supper and the buffet open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, pizza place open daily for lunch and also double up every other night as cuban, seafood every other day for dinner and also double up for lunch but serves a spanish dish for lunch only. The staff is wonderful, the beach beautiful, not much for young children to do, at least some peolpe were complaining about that, take them to the beach people. If you are a person who like to shop go somewhere else, this is the perfect place to relax, that is what holidays are for TO RELAX. Take a book, go to the beach and eat and drink yourself silly. Make friends, life is too short to bitch and complain, about the ashtrays in a room (like some people were doing), don't you have anything else to do. If you cannot go with an open mind. STAY HOME Christmas Eve and New Year Eve was wonderful.
What animation? They must have focused on your family only.

Just returned on Jan9. A family of 4 that included our 8 year old daughter and 23 month old son. Lovely resort. Beautiful beach. Main pool is fantastic with various depths. Cobbled stone roads and pathways. -The pool bar, however, closes at 5pm. -Food is typical Cuban standard at the buffet restaurant. -The Itallian a la carte restaurant was excellent. The best meal we have ever experienced in Cuba. Didn't try the Seafood a la carte restaurant. The other guests said it was okay. I didn't know there was suppose to be 4! -The bartenders were terrific. They offer a wide assortment of mixed drinks that you don't ususally see in Cuba. They also make great cappucinos. -We stayed in block #15 which was an incredible location. Close to EVERYTHING except the main buffet restaurant. Once you figure out the shortcuts, it is only a 3-5 minute walk! New bathrooms but yes, very, very, squeaky swinging doors that separate the shower area. We pushed both twin beds together and all 4 of us were comfortable. Don't use the cribs. Very unstable. -Even the mini bar atttndant was great. He always offered items to us telling us "it's free! it's free". -The catamaran ride is a must. Very thrilling! The salt h2o pool and 2nd buffet restaurant are indeed closed. Sorry, I don't know when they will be completed. These were not the major problem, however. There is not an active Animation team. Unless you consider a 20-minute dance lesson each day entertainment. My husband organized beach volleyball games for the other guests. They were sorry and sad to see him leave! The catamarans and paddle boats were only available 1 day out of 7. The office hut was closed and equipment chained up! There is also NO nightly entertainment. NO LIVE SHOWS that we thought were standard at hotels in Cuba. Again, unless you consider a 6 piece band every night. Quite boring after a while. Nothing to do after dinner. The kids club is also quite limited. Just a supervised area by one young girl. No fault of hers. Mini disco was also 20 minutes each night. These 3 factors were a dissappointment. I was very surprised the previous posting could list the names of the Animation team. Where were they hiding? This is a lovely resort with huge potential. They must work on making it a truly memorable experience with more guest interaction and relations that would bring it up to a 5 star vacation!
Great place .... but...

We just returned from the Blau. First of all we had a great time. However, it was our intension to have a very relaxing holiday with very little to do. And we were not dissapointed to that end: - The beach is really nice (one of the nicest I have ever seen) - The staff is really nice and attentive (especially Liber) - The hotel rooms are very nice, spacious and clean. - The massages are worthwhile if you are into that type of thing. However, people considering the Blau and Cayo Coco in general should be aware of the following: - January is winter time in Cuba and the winds are very strong on the Atlantic Side. We are talking very strong winds at times (felt like hurricane season some days). Not sure how strong the winds are the rest of the year though. - The food can be bland and not very exciting (it is mostly served warm, not piping hot). - The swing doors on the bathrooms will drive you crazy. - Don't expect too many activities at the Blau. We tried to go scuba diving but never made it; the staff at the Tryp Cayo Coco did not seem to be too interested in our money (very little effort was made to ensure we would go diving). So it saved us a few hundred dollars. The Blau does not provide diving charters they outsource to Tryp. But as mentionned above they are not very accomodating, at least not to guest of the Blau. - A good portion of the resort is still not open. It might be significantly better when they open the salt water pool. Would we go again? Yes. As long as all we wanted to do is spend time relaxing, enjoying the Cuban sun and the hospitality of our Blau staff. However, if we wanted excitement and adventure we would fly to a different island.
