" Excellent value ! but please get the Timeshre people to back off !!! "

just returned from our Holiday in the Blue star and I have to say, I have been to Puerto rico many times and this has definatley been our best visit yet. Booked the blue star as somewhere cheap and cheerful to stay and this is exactly what it was. I mean it's not the Ritz but we didnt pay for the Ritz!
Accomadation is very basic one bed apartment with no extra's kitchen has a kettle, fridge, cooker sink and utilities, extras such as toasters etc can be rented if needs be.The apartment was very clean and we had the cleaners in every second day with fresh towels and bed linen was changed twice. Lovley big balcony with amazing views.
But what the apartment lacks in plushness I have to say the staff sure do make up for this, the maids we're so pleasent and although did not have fantastic english made a huge effort to converse every time we seen them. The reception staff we're more than helpfull and very pleasent also.
What makes this Apartment Complex differ from the rest is the restraunt and bar ran by a gentleman called mal or mo as some people call him. This man and his staff are by far the friendliest, most accomadating staff I have EVER seen in a hotel. They made us feel so welcome and had a free drink for us everytime we went to the restraunt or bar. The food served was by far some of the best food I have eaten.. I highly recommend you pay this restraunt a vist while in Puerto Rico ! You will be made feel so welcome and they have nightly entertainment by Terry Bull.. who is quite funny but when he starts to sing, surprisingly also has a fantastic voice, think of peter kay mixed with jo cocker !!!
Puerto rico it's self is a fantastic resort with lots to do for people of all ages, with the two commercial centres the Blue star is up at the top of the hill close to the Europa Centre, amadores beach is about a 15 minute walk down hill, taxi costs about 3euro.
Beware of the PR's working for the time shares, you will not only find these standing at the stalls selling time shares for Anfi, but they are now young PR's promoting "Sands Fm" the Atlantic Coast Club in Arguingan and now the new hotel in Amadores, bascically these will approach you asking are you British Irish, scottish etc, and then ask are you attending Carnival, or other events in Puerto Rico, most have scratch cards and will tell you that they have nothing to do with time shares that they are working to promote tourism !!! Believe me this is all lies !! next they will tell you have won the "star priz" a cam coreder a laptop a holiday and you need to go to collect this, they provide you with a free taxi to the location ...
Trust me I have won the "star prize" so many times and I havent recieved one single thing ... only a day of my life wasted listening to people trying to sell me time share apartments and holidays... I was stupid enough to pay 500euro for a holiday to a time share apartment that I have never taken as it is a total scam to get you to spend more money... So basically Anyone who approaches you to tell you that if you go to these spots and you will get free cigs, alcohol, t shirts are basically just PR's for timeshare they will do ANYTHING to rope you in and I mean Anything, Just say NO !! your not interested and no matter what they try to rope you in with beware these guys and girls have the gift of the gab !!
Just be very Careful !

Advice: Beware of the PR's working for the time shares,... and vist Bora Bora best coctails ever ....

Activities: El toro negro and Mo's bar and restraunt !

Good for: Beach

" fantastic bluestar hotel! "

Hi,We have recently returned from a holiday at the Bluestar hotel in Puerto Rico,GranCanaria,we had read all these bad reviews and was a bit sceptical to say the least! On arrival we was greeted by pleasant reception staff, and shown to our rooms. The apartment was bright, clean and very roomy, with an amazing shower in the bathroom and a fantastic large balcony!
The pool area and bar was very clean and looked very new!We met Mo and his staff, and they were absolutely fantastic,3.80euros for a full english breakfast,2eggs,2 toast,2 bacon, sausage, beans, toms, and mushrooms!!and a pint was only 2.00euros!
But,something also new was the restaurant and bar area on the 8th floor near reception, where again Mo and his staff worked thier butts off, serving the most fantastic menu, anything from salads,to steak.chicken, pastas anything you like and a happy smile
to go with it!
I would like to say, please go and try the Bluestar, its all changed and now rated a 2star!
many thanks for a wonderful holiday,Mo and the team really looked after us!
cheers Dave and Ali.....

Advice: most definately

" Cant knock it "

We have stayed at the Blue Star for 10 of the last 12 years and apart from a few little teething probs you get at any appartments the Blue Star is brilliant, the reception staff cant do enough for you, the views from virtualy any room are great, I notice one reviewer said she had to spend 3 euro for a taxi to go for a meal, but you have the Europa Centre on your door-step which I find a lot better for the slightly older visitor (Try the Sportsman Bar), its wall to wall Fools and Horses videos, I know we've seen them all, but what an atmosphere when you get a bar-full laughing there socks off, all in all I cant knock the Blue Star as we are heading back again in October.
Paul

Advice: If your fit, use the Orange handrail stairs, great shortcut to the beach and save a few Euros in tax

" Good value but some bad points! "

Me and 3 friends booked for a week at the end of March. The Blue Star is one of the highest appartments, and so is a 3 euro taxi ride from town (where the main restaurants and pubs are). The appartments themselves are basic but exactly what I would expect for the price. They were clean and had everything we needed. We had a couple of cockroaches but I don't think that was due to the appartments being dirty. The only 2 criticisms I would have of the appartments themselves was 1. the security light outside on the balcony (which was positioned right outside the bedroom window) turns on when it gets dark and doesn't turn off until morning. This meant the bedroom was never totally dark and I woke up a few times thinking it was morning, when it was only 3am! 2. the beds are covered in plastic sheets which you slide around on at night! fine once your asleep but makes you feel like your on a changing mat!
The pool was lovely - not busy - plenty of sunbeds to go round (although they are painful if your bones stick out a bit!).
The lifts are a pain in the neck. We were on the 3rd floor so relied on the lift to get us to the 9th floor (reception). Unfortunately the stairs don't run top to bottom with any sense so if you take the stairs to the top it takes ages and ages.
Staff friendly.
Great weather and brill tans achieved. Not the best appartment I have stayed in but very good value and unless you are the type to moan about everything you will have a wonderful holiday here!

Advice: great weather, good value, but not the best or most accessible night life or restaurants.

" WOW! "

after staying at blue star apartments i went home and recommended it to all my friends.
the view was absolutly amazing, you could see for miles across the beautiful blue ocean, and i was onthe 4th floor, the same floor as the pool wich made it easier to talk to lots of other people staying there. the staff are very friendly, you wouldnt need to hesitate to ask for anything.
i stayed over christmas and new year and the atmosphere was outstanding, the hotel is situated near the europa centre which is helpfull if you have children!!
the night life was unbelievable, everyone gets to know eachother so well and there are attraction for children aswell!!
i loved it that much that i am going back with my friends instead of family in july and at christmas time!!!
i would recommend this hotel to anybody who is looking for a holiday at gran canaria. the taxi and bus rides aren't too much to get to the centre of puerto rico and everyone is so lovely to eachother!!!

Advice: it is absolutly amazing and everybody should go!

Activities: barbacoa, aqualand, palmitos park and the beaches!

" Its OK  "

Well what can i say i read the reviews and thought well they could be wrong.
Bad points we had our room broke in on the second night room 450 which is on the lowest level. They seem to look for the new arrivals another chap was broke in and they got quite a lot
They didnt really get anything from us other than costome jewels. Our money thankfully was in the safe .Which is a must.
The hotel couldnt have been more helpfull they moved our party hubby and boys and their girlfriends the next day.
The hotel does have some cockroaches but that isnt because of dirt. They are comman in the canaries due to the heat and they live in the sewers and come up.Dont crush them as thay give off a scent to the others.
The hotel was clean but a little shabby. Its a great base for somewhere to lay your head at the end of the day.its not 5 star and doesnt cliam to be.
The pool is OK but the sunbeds are striaght from the torture chambers .Much better to go to the beach which is great.
Aviod the aqua park its expensive and not worth the money.
Food go to Flicks for breakfast 6 eoro for a godfather massive brekie.
Next door but one is a great set meal 3 course for 9.90
If you eat in Peurto Rico centre go to the stak house in the square on the ground level monster meat 12.95 and there is enough for 2.Or a big eater.
Barbaco see Gary Gobstopper a great night out at the europe near the hotel.
Taxi are really cheap.Oh and the weather was fab came home with a great tan
Apart from the break in and a little noise the hotel is acceptable not the best but a cheap holiday.Oh i forgot to say John the rep is great guy and very helpfull

" Good Stay!! "

Good Points: great views, close to the europa centre, clean rooms, large balcony, friendly staff.
Bad Points: Towels very small and dont dry you very well!!
Just got back from 2 weeks at the blue star in puerto rico, we enjoyed our stay here and after we asked to move rooms on arrival for better views we was very pleased with the room we was given (7th floor).
Would go back and recomend people to go to the blue star.

+ = Nice staff,great views
- =dodgy lift that doesn't take you all the way to the top, miles from the beach, crap pool,COCKROACHES,COCKROACHES,COCKROACHES outside and inside the apartment even after the bug hunter has been. Even the cleaner carried bug spray as part of her cleaning materials.
AVOID THIS PLACE ITS A HOLE.

" Just come back from 2 wonderful sunny... "

Just come back from 2 wonderful sunny weeks in Gran Canaria.

We stayed at the Blue Star Apartments in Puerto Rico. We had a nice quiet room towards the end of the complex on the 7th floor and had no problems what so ever.

All reception staff very friendly.

The room are very basic but no more or less that what you need when self catering really. Rooms were always kept clean. Cleaners were very friendly.

Pool area and bar were also very good. A good selection on food through out the day.

The only downside was the entertainment. Music playing from the bar through the day was nice when sunbathing but would have been nice to meet people from the same hotel by having evening entertainment aswell.

Over all a very good enjoyable holiday.

" The Blue Star is the worst hotel in... "

The Blue Star is the worst hotel in Gran Canaria i have ever stayed in! For the following reasons:

We were on the 6th floor which gives you a good view of the sea and we could see into the Babalus nightly entertainment, which was quite handy. since the Blue Star doesn't run any entertainment!

When we first arrived at the Blue Star the room seemed lovely, apart from everything in the bathroom leaked.
-the handle to flush the toilet
-the taps to the shower
-the shower itself
-the toilet

even sink in the kitchen leaked!

The next day we decided to see what the pool was like.
There was not enough sunbeds for starters. Most of the time we ended up laying on the floor!

The floor can get far too hot during the day! the floor should be a white colour..not peach or concrete. The metal stairs to go up to a sunbathing area get white hot too. i burnt the bottoms of my feet on them!

And i fully understand spanish people also go there for holidays..but if eveyone else obeys the rules then why dont they???
The spanish children were unruly, they had little or no supervision, they use you lilo's/beach balls etc without asking.
One spanish child also took something out of someones beach bag!!!!!!
They also do not follow the no diving rule. the pool is far to small and shallow to be diving!!!

The people who worked at reception were out of order as well..Me and my party were waiting at the desk for 5 mins while he was speaking to other people. Just as he finished a spanish family approached and he totally ignored us and served them!

Now..The Lift..
it broke down on us once while we were in it. and once while we were waiting for it. It wasnt the best of lifts and yes it shudders while moving..and it does make some very strange noises! but it was ok..apart from when it stopped working at the floor we were staying on..so we either had to walk up or down an extra level of stairs just to go up to reception!

And one thing to watch out for...if your staying at the end of one of the levels..[for example i was in room 634 which is at the end of the hotel where it over looks the babalu] kids were throwing stones onto our balcony! (nothing to do with the blue star but i thought i would tell you to watch out) but the police were called and someone was sent to deal with the problem, which then stopped.

Apart from all that...the holiday was fine. If you do go, you must try the 'el toro' restaurant! its gorgeous [so are some of the waiters] but the food is lovely. also try picasso! i've loved the place since i statred going to Gran Canaria 13 years ago! [if you walk outside the blue star, looks up the hill past the chemist..you cant miss it, its just past all the big white houses]

But the holiday as a whole was very good.
the food was quite cheap [67 euro for a 3 course meal for 3 people + drinks]
and the weather was perfect.

I wont be staying at the blue star again! i shall go back to where i normally stay..The Rio Sol.

" The Blue Star is cheap and cheerful... "

The Blue Star is cheap and cheerful accomodation. The views from all apartments 300 and upwards are stunning. The staff are helpful and friendly and always keen to assist.

The rooms where cleaned every other day while we there for two weeks.

The pool is pretty big with plenty of sun beds and a bar selling snacks for lunch, well priced too.

It is about five mins walk to europa centre, which has some nice restaurants, el toro being the best.

xtreme bar is decent night with plenty of laughs and cheesy music.

The shopping centre is about 5 mins in a cab and will cost about 3 euros, it is definitely too far to walk. Here you will find loads of good bars and restaurants, best for food are san miguel, el torro, best bar is stevie yorks irish bar, great entertainment, cheap bars are m and m at only 95 cents for a local beer.

We did not see any cockroaches and the lift worked fine for the full two weeks.

The amadores beach is nice and clean with loads of sun beds.

You will have a great hol here as long as you dont expect five star accomodation when you only pay for two key!!!!1

" i would rate as okay. the comments... "

i would rate as okay. the comments about the lift are way way way overboard. we were there for two weeks and the lift never broke down (possibly just luck) it has glass windows either side and you get a nice view of the sea whilst in the lift. yes it jerks whilst setting of which is why they have a metal rail that you hold onto!!!we had our bag stolen of our terrace but it was our own fault for leaving it on there although the reception staff were useless when we reported it and we requested that we would like the police to be called, they just wasnt interested. the sercurity guy that was on was quite helpful and did search the hotel premises. thieves are everywhere so dont let this put you off, just be careful. the rooms are okay for a two star hotel, very basic but our cleaner was there every two days. the towels get quite smelly with the water after they have been used and are not very clever at drying you. the pool is quite salty and could be cleaner. pool bar food is nice and you can take it to your room. the restaraunt was shut all two weeks and dont know why. there is a reptile show on fridays at 1.00 beside the poolbar where they had snakes and lizards which you can have your photo taken with at a price but that is the only entertainment there but there is brilliant entertainment at barbacoas which is a two minute walk from the hotel and is the first restaraunt/bar that you come to, they do great shows, nice food, and giveaways for children to go on the trampolines . they also have a computer in reception that you can go the internet which was 1 euro for 16 minutes i think. we had room 728 and the view was fine. our family had 426 (poolside) and there view was okay. overall it was okay.

" 1)
To start off with when we... "

1)
To start off with when we got there I thought I was going to fall through the glass in the lift as it knocks you flying when it was working!!

The noise of the lift kept us awake at nights.

2)
The lock on our apartment door didn't work.

3)
2 nights we had no electricity to our room. Even the staff didn't know anything when we asked them about it and no chance of being shifted.

4)
The cleaners were really nice but staff on the main reception area didn't make you feel welcome at all and made you stand waiting whilst they were on the phone and wouldn't acknowledge your presence till they had finished.

5)
Lift broke down 3 days before we were due to leave as a result we had to carry our suitcases from the 1st floor to reception which is very tough going.

6)
Also there are birds as you make way into hotel reception - badly needed cleaned and smell wasn't very nice at all.

Would never stay at this hotel again.

" These apartments are nice and basic.... "

These apartments are nice and basic. They are located less than a 5min walk from europa centre - there is a bar called extreemz there which you MST go 2 if you want a great night. We spent every night there which we never do on hol. The dj is brill and does a free shot quiz every night. The main centre at the bottom of the hill is about a 30min walk downhill but i would defo recommend a taxi there are loads of them and they are cheap too.
There was never a problem with the lift during our stay. The reception staff were lovely and helpful - the nicest i've met on a holiday and spoke good english!
The pool was fine not huge but not too small either and was never overly busy. The hotel supermarket's prices were ok unlike some places. The only criticism I have is that the self-catering faclilities were not too good as all you have is a kettle and hobs. If you want a toaster, oven, microwave etc - you have to rent them individually for between 10 and 30 euros each after renting the safe for 30e and 40e for the fan i didn't bother with anything else. But overall i think if you get a good price for blue star its worth it. I would stay there again.

" Howdy,

Went to... "

Howdy,

Went to the blue star in April Last year with 4 friends.

I found that as soon as we arrived the Staff could'nt do enough for you, really friendly, always had a smile on there face and spoke really good english.

Our room(s) 727 & 729 was situated with the perfect view away from the husstle and busstle and was somthing amazing to wake up to. Although during our stay next to the hotel was some slight construction underway.....

The lift......... every hotel has them most of them dont work and this is no different its just funny nothing of a hazzard just simply wouldnt rely on it to work 24/7

The Pool is brilliant Clean and Fun (for those of a more youthful age you can dive off the top sun bathing area :D )

There is a bar next to the pool with good food, one of my friends who came is a brilliant chef and could not praise the chef there enough. Booze is cheap as Chips.

Over all the Hotel is fine just fine, if your looking for somewhere to base and also relax this is it nothing fancy or over the top. Perfect for Familys & Young Party heads.

Some of these reviews are abit over the top with the negative feedback some people just want everything for nothing i guess.

Will be going again.
