Best Resort on Thassos
9 / 10
May 2011, chessyman

We have been to Thassos many times and always pay a visit to Makryamos as its the best resort apart from Aliki on the island. The beach is safe and relaxing. The swimming is good and the sea shelves gently so you can walk out quite away before it gets up to your sensitive bits. The facilities are excellent, clean toilets, showers. Eating is good too a lovely beach bar serving inexpensive snacks. A proper restaurant and a beach side Taverna. There's even Peacocks running around freely. Just one complaint this year for the first time they have young girls and boys wearing blue polo shirts and black trousers pacing up and down the beach all day long ready to serve drinks and snacks to people on the beach. This is great for us but we felt sorry for them. Apparently they are not allowed to wear sunglasses or shorts. When it gets to July and August the poor things will be roasted. Hope the management realise that they need more suitable clothing.

Had a great time at makryammos in...

Had a great time at makryammos in July 2006. We took our 4 year old son , with us who is very sociable and even though it is not packed, with English speaking people (which we like) he got on very well, with the other children (be it Greek, German, Spanish.).
My only complaint would be for the play area, which was not very well lit at night time (you could not relax and have a couple of drinks, as even a couple of yards away you can not see the children). Pushing this aside, (yes i know you need to keep an eye on your children 24/7), food fantastic, (although lots of flies) but remember this is an environmentally friendly island and it's main produce is honey (so lots of BEES, one of which stung my son on the bum!!) The reps do warn you of this, when you are coming into the island.
I would definitely go back here. If you enjoy a nice and relaxing holiday, with the convenience of Thassos town just 20 minutes away (walking) or 5 in a taxi.

Just returned from a great holiday in...

Just returned from a great holiday in Thassos. Overall it was wonderful and very relaxing, just thought some of the following may be of interest.
The journey from the airport is very good, going on the ferry from Keramoti to Thassos town is very well organised with coaches from the airport to the ferry, then you walk onto the ferry which has seats inside and outside. There is also a cafe to buy drinks on board. Then coaches at the other side to meet you. At the resort you are given your room number, after that you leave your luggage to be brought up to your room as the hill is quite steep.
Sun beds find a good one, by number, then go to reception to pay for it, if it is available, people seem to pay for them and if they have a good position they hang on to the keys all week or fortnight, sometimes sun beds can be locked up and not sat on all day as the owners have just gone out for the day. They cost 7 euros a day, but at least there is no getting up at the crack of dawn to get one. The pool is a lot smaller than it looks in pictures and also gets quite a few wasps and bees in it. It also doesn’t look extremely clean, but the sea is very very clear so makes up for it.
The shop at the resort is very, very, very small so make sure you stock up before you go, the rooms have kettles and cups but the shop had no tea, coffee or sugar so take your own. But it did have milk, which we kept in the fridge. The only shops are in Thassos which is a short taxi drive away costing 4 euros or a 20 min walk, half uphill! But all in all we had a very relaxing sunny quiet holiday.

The holiday started with the ferry...

The holiday started with the ferry over to Thassos, the views from the ferry are stunning and it only took 30 minutes. Then onto the coach for a 10 minute ride to the resort. When we got to the Makryammos I thought it was beautiful.
We were checked in by really friendly, approachable staff and shown to our room which was spotless the balcony is not very big but the size of the bathroom makes up for that. We had a shower got changed and went to dinner, the dinning room is large with an outside area to eat, the food is really, really good there is a buffet and you can help yourself to anything you see.
The amount of food they make is unbelievable, whatever you want, also for the English there are chips with everything. I could not find fault in anything the rooms are nice but ask to be put low down because it is very hilly and if you are large like me believe me it hurts. The staff are nice, the cleaners are nice, the maintenance man is nice. The beach is so looked after that there is not even one ciggie butt left on the beach. The waiters in the dining room are really fit and good looking look out for Giannis he is a Greek God.
All in all Thassos is the best Greek island and the Makryammos is the best accommodation I have ever stayed at. It is really wonderful place.

We flew from Gatwick to Kavala and...

We flew from Gatwick to Kavala and were transported to the ferry port by coach. All very well organised (luggage taken at airport and we didn’t see it again until outside our room. Lovely crossing on ferry don’t forget food for seagulls that follow ferry in hope all the way to Thassos port. Can get coffee and snack on ferry. My two sons aged 5 and 9 loved the crossing. It took about 30mins and we waited at the port approx 30 mins for FERRY, WHERE WE HAD A LIGHT LUNCH at one of the many pavement cafes while waiting for crossing a lovely break in the journey.
Thassos Island is very pretty as you approach on ferry don’t forget camera. Coach met us for a 10 minute ride to Makryammos. Very friendly welcome and efficient booking in at reception. Do try and book a room nearest to beach/swimming pool as some bungalows at rear quite a steep walk to main building and facilities. Bungalow rooms built in local stone and very clean, simple Greek decor with veranda and sea views through the many pines. All built on side of hill/mountain of pines so plenty of shade. Wouldn’t recommend this holiday for disabled or anyone with walking difficulties.
I felt the setting was beautiful and if you like a quiet getaway from it all holiday this is the place for you. The beach is soft white sand and the sea so remarkably clear and so shallow and you feel very safe with children not only in sea but also everywhere in the complex so you can have a really relaxing holiday.
If you like a lively holiday you would feel a little marooned here as the walk to Thassos town is approx. 2.5km which takes about 30 mins because of steepish hill through the complex at beginning of walk after that mostly down hill and very pretty. Thassos town is a small typically Greek town with LOADS of lovely restaurants and cafes and souvenir shops. The old port on right side of town is worth a visit to see life go by and watch the fishing boats come in and out of the harbour. It is only 4 euros for a taxi back to Hotel so on a very hot day is much appreciated.
The food at Hotel is lovely and I think a very good selection though the buffet is not enormous. Very tasty with good hot and cold breakfasts. LOCAL HONEY AND YOGHURT A MUST.
Dining room is very spacious and extends out onto veranda for al fresco option with magnificent views of bay.
Bungalows are cleaned daily to a very good standard they even put out children’s teddies and pyjamas on beds a lovely touch. STAFF ALL VERY FRIENDLY particularly Simon the English bar waiter who fell in love and married a girl from the island.
They could do with more waiters in dining room at busy times we often had to clear away our own dishes but they do try to please. We had a lovely barbecue one evening lovely kebabs.
It did rain for two days on and off with a little thunder and lightning but were told this is very rare, but island is very green after all.
We took the water taxi to Golden Bay one day . Nice trip out but quite a walk at other end to the beach which I didn’t like as much as our own , but at least a few cafes and a little more there. At Hotel there is a very small shop, which sells newspapers, a few sweets, few drinks and postcards, not a lot else. You are recommended to buy bottled water and this along with most drinks quite expensive to buy at hotel. Do stock up in Thassos town. There is a fridge with ice tray in all rooms.
Children’s mini club is next to pool and run by a very nice girl from Thessaloniki from 10.00a.m. to 2.00p.m. and from 5.00p.m. to 9.00p.m. every day bar Thursdays.
Swimming pool adjoins beach with lovely views out to sea. It is very clean and well kept with free sunbeds and umbrellas and a lovely pool bar, which sells ice creams baguettes and other snacks and most drinks. You have to pay at reception for beach beds and umbrellas but this is 6 euros a day plus a refundable deposit of 5 euros on top. But I thought well worth it as you have your own very well kept private beach and all facilities at hand i.e. beach bar lovely children’s playground, tennis court, swimming pool. basketball court all basically on beach.
We hired a car out with Potos for 20 euros for one day which is plenty if all you want to do is drive round the island to say you’ve been there and done that. You can comfortably drive around the total coast road in two hours so one day is ample to allow plenty of breaks in the trip and I honestly found no setting I liked better than Makyrammos one of the prettiest on the island though a little remote you are only 2.5km from the town so all in all for us a fantastic holiday!
