Reading the horror stories on here a couple of days before departing for our holiday somewhat dampened our spirits and I had visions of the forthcoming "holiday from hell". Well we needn't have worried!! Stegna is a lovely peaceful resort, ideal for those who are looking for a quiet family holiday. It has a nice beach, the sea is warm and crystal clear and there are plenty of bars and restaurants.
The apartments are very close to the beach and a supermarket. We had booked a one bedroom apartment and a studio apartment and both were clean on arrival. The building is modern and although the studio was quite small it was ample for two of us.
It compared very favourably with other Greek Island studios we have stayed at and the air conditioning was a bonus and worked well. Yes it is slightly expensive at 9 euros per apartment per day but it was definitely worth it for the comfort. The apartments were only cleaned once during our stay and we did have a nasty smell coming from the drains in the bathroom of one apartment on a couple of occasions but these were just minor issues.
The bar seemed to be open all of the time and was most certainly open until very late at night. The pool and surrounding areas were kept very clean. The curtains across the door were hanging off on arrival and we mentioned this to the rep the day after arrival and by the time we arrived back at the apartment that afternoon, they had been rehung.
The owner Sam was friendly, polite and pleasant throughout our stay and we had no major problems whatsoever. Other people we spoke to also seemed happy with their apartments and at least one family were there on their second visit. I would certainly be happy to stay there again.
As a small word of warning, there are no cash machines in Stegna and we didn't find any restaurants or shops that took cards, so it is wise to ensure that you take enough cash with you, unless you plan to hire a car or visit the larger resorts by bus or taxi. There is only one bus a day to Rhodes Town which leaves Stegna around 9am and returns around 3pm

Had a great two weeks in Stegna in a group of two families using three apartments which were perfectly adequate. There was somewhere to sleep, have a shower and make a cuppa. What more do you need when the resort is as nice as Stegna?
Some reports portray Sam the owner quite unkindly, but if you take the time and get to know him, his wife Marina and his son "energy on legs", you get to know a lovely family.
Although the air con at the apartments is more expensive than I have previously paid, it is a must, and the odd power cut is nothing more than a slight inconvenience. Those are the most negative things about the apartments that I can think of.
Stegna itself is great and all the tavernas provide good/excellent food. Get a car and see a bit of Rhodes it's beautiful. Read these reviews then do as our party did, go with an open mind.

For anyone visiting this resort, a couple of tips :- take some anti bacterial wipes and a dustpan and brush and you won't go far wrong!
Seriously, we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 weeks here, so much so that we have just booked to go back July 2007. Yes the rooms were basic and could have been cleaned more frequently but we felt it added to the character of the holiday.
As a group of 4 adults and 4 kids (3 under 6 yrs), we have never had such a relaxing chilled out holiday. Sam (the owner) and his family were charming and very helpful, and the men of the group enjoyed many a beer and game of pool with him.
We loved the resort and would have loved to have stayed longer. Stegna is somewhere we will visit for many years to come. If anyone reading this is due to go there soon, please say a big hello to Nikos at the Mercedes Bar from Emily (my 6 yr old daughter)

On arrival we had to wait to go into our room as it had not been cleaned, after a very hot night we asked about air con and was charged 150 euros for 13 nights which after speaking to other people the owner seemed to charging everyone different prices.
The room was very basic and the smell from the drain in the bathroom was terrible the toilet bin was never empted all the time we were there, we had to do it ourselves.
There was also nightly power cuts in random rooms when we asked Sam the owner about this he said it was a local problem, if so then why didn’t all the apartments have this problem we think he turned of power to save electric!!.
The place itself was okay but lets itself down very badly with the cleaning needless to say would not be going back again.

I would just like to say that my comments relate to our apartment and that the resort and people of stegna are fantastic especially all at the Mercedes bar.
We go to various Greek islands every year and always go self catering but I have never ever stayed in an apartment so ill equipped dirty and downright dangerous as this, to be fair the other apartment our older children stayed in was better but that is not hard! Wires hanging out of walls wires hanging down the METAL patio doors in our room the air conditioner wiring was also hanging down and cobbled together.
We were in a one bedroom apartment but our 4 year old had to sleep with us as the wires hung down about 3ft above her, the air conditioner was in our bedroom and didn’t cool the rest of the apartment anyway. Her bed had a space to the side of it nicely covered with the bottom sheet under which was concrete and stones. We decided not too complain after being advised by others that things would not get done if we did HA!!!
The bin (toilet) that was the only one anyway was finally emptied on Wednesday we arrived on the Saturday, you can imagine. Sam himself seemed a nice enough chap but if we had complained who knows, bed linen and cleaning, me not even going to start about as I think you get the general jist of things here. We were certainly not alone with everyone on our floor in the same boat.
I read a review from last year about a smell its still there and yes it’s bloody awful! We were assured by Kosmar that all the complaints you may have read on this site had now been sorted out this was four weeks before we left needless to say I shall be ringing them tomorrow to put them straight

Jun 2006, Mrs S Deakin

Having just returned from 2 weeks at Constantino apartments in Stegna, I feel I have to address some of the previous comments on this site. Having read the reviews before going on holiday I must say we were quite apprehensive, how wrong we were.
I don’t know if the standards have changed from last year or whether the majority of people who made comments should not have gone to Greece in the first place. The apartments are quite basic, but, that’s Greece.
The utensils were limited, but, that’s Greece, and as for moaning about there not being enough loo roll...get a life! Sam and his family are an ordinary hard working Greek family trying to earn a living.
The bar was open from 9am until the last person left. If you are willing to show some interest in what he tries to achieve, i.e. buying the odd Mythos off him, then he will show you Greek hospitality like you have never experienced. Aroma and Kozas best tavernas.

May 2006, L Munty

I have read all of the comments about these apartments, good and bad and I feel I need to address a few issues regarding this apartments! Greece is known for its laid back attitude which is why I keep returning year after year, these apartments were basic BUT who cares!
There was plenty of things to do and see and lets face it with that beach so close who needs to stay indoors. We did have a run in with a couple of cockroaches whilst we were there but this was not due to the cleanliness of the apartments but the big hills and fields behind the resort where their natural habitat is! At the end of the day they were the there before the tourist resort. (The resort consists if one row of apartments, bars, and food places the beach in front and the hills behind)
Sam and Dimitris were nice enough blokes they had their funny ways but they were easy enough to got on with (although we did stop drinking in the bar after we saw Dimitri taking out the bins then scooping up the ice with his hands without washing them) we laughed it off but I could understand some people may not be as easy going as me!
I think the air conditioning could have been a bit cheaper at 9 euros a day it builds up over a fortnight but ohh sooo worth it to get a good nights sleep!
Mercedis bar is great and the lads were a great laugh, they even managed to entertain us when the power went out oh yeah this happens a lot hear. Be warned!
All in all its a nice place, lovely beach, nice pool, basic accommodation but like I said WHO CARES your on holiday, its not a 5 star hotel so don’t compare it to one! Xx

On arrival in the early hours of...
2 / 10
Sep 2005, Mrs W Young

On arrival in the early hours of Sunday morning at Rhodes airport after a tiring night flight we were greeted by our Kosmar rep, given a map, and told our room number then shared a taxi with another couple en route to Stegna Beach and Constantinos.
On arrival, Constantinos looked really lovely, a short walk (less than minute) from the road, with a supermarket a few seconds away and the beach a further few seconds.
We found our room, (8) and found it to be very very basic in comparison to other resorts we have been to. it was relatively clean apart from a bit of a smell (we could not find its origin) and there were no waste bags in the toilet bin, one of our curtains was hanging off, there was enough crockery and cutlery for 2 people, but no cooking pots, only one dirty water boiling pot, very little storage facility for our clothes, and no airers for our washing, so it hung on chairs to dry.
The pool was very clean but very very cold. so we opted to spend our days at the beach where the sea was warmer.
The owner, Sam, and his friend Dimitris both seemed very welcoming on our first night, and helped our friends with some problems they had, that our rep seemed very unhelpful with, the bar did not open until around 1pm that first day, and stayed open till around midnight first night.
Our first night found us sweltering and very uncomfortable as our apartment was extremely hot, we asked about air conditioning which seemed quite expensive (9 euros per night) and did not work properly so we did without the rest of the week.
Cleaners arrived midweek (Wednesday) to clean, but seemed to bypass us and 2 other families, we reported this then preceded to clean it ourselves and were told there were bins on the main road for rubbish, we asked for mops and brushes etc. and found them around back, next to what seemed like everyone else’s rubbish bags. We were given clean towels and sheets by Dimitri the next day.
There was no entertainment at all at our bar and it was closed on our return after eating out,(around 10 pm) so we spent our second night in the local hotspot, "Mercedes bar", the owner Christos, his mother and sister and staff were lovely people and always made us and everyone very very welcome, so we became regulars.

It seemed to us that 'Sam" did not seem to appreciate our not spending time in his bar at all,(which was closed early anyway) and was from the third morning on, very stand offish with us, whenever he was there.

We were told that our last day we had to vacate our room by 2pm, but as we were not being picked up until 3am for our return we asked about keeping an apartment till later, it was quite expensive to do so, (30 euros).
We decided it would be a little better on the purse strings to keep open one apartment with our friends, and as we have done this in the past at other resorts without any problem, we thought this would be suitable.
HOW WRONG WE WERE!
Sam was very rude to us and told us that the apartment was only for two and if we wanted to stay longer we would have to pay for another apartment, we politely tried to explain that we did not want to live in it but were only storing our luggage and using the showering facilities, but he got even more confrontational and rude and again told us that if we want these comforts then we should pay for another apartment, not share, as this was very inconvenient.
If we did not want to rent an apartment from him we should store our luggage and personal effects outside, at the main entrance OR find somewhere else!
I was extremely, emotionally, upset by this, and then asked how we were to shower etc. He told us there was showering and toileting facilities available. We had sat only one case outside our apartment before this confrontation, (at 11.30 am,) and the cleaners were already in our room! We said the apartment was ours till 2 pm but were told we had to leave as other people were arriving.
After spending the last day on the beach we returned to use the "showering facilities" that Sam had offered us, it was a small room next door to our old apartment, with 2 toilets and a shower, it had no window, it smelled awful,(possibly the "smell" we had in our apartment) the floor was dirty,(we had to shower in our flip flops) with no lock on the door, the shower did not work properly and there was no lighting which i had almost to beg for!
We had to open our luggage to retrieve our clean clothes and toiletries in full view of the patrons in the apartments and then to again open up in full view to pack our wet things and toiletries away. This I found to be very demeaning and embarrassing and was very very upset, other people in the apartments saw my upset and offered for us to use their facilities but Sam remained vigilant, watching everything and only left after we had used his facilities.
I have travelled with Kosmar for the past 6 years and this is the first time I have encountered such, rudeness, embarrassment and upset and am very very disappointed.
We spent our last night hearing horror stories from holidaymakers to Stegna, who had been to Constantinos or knew people who had been and it seems that WE were not the only people to have felt such upset and disappointment.
We will return to "STEGNA BEACH" as the resort was very nice and relaxing, with superb restaurants and lovely people, and I cant say enough about the hospitality shown to us by Christos and his family and staff at "MERCEDES BAR". There is only one very steep, long and winding road in and out of Stegna and one bus out and back in. If you have small children or like us are a little older and looking to relax then this is the place for you, (I think it’s too quiet for your teenagers).
WE HOWEVER, WILL NOT, BE RETURNING TO
"CONSTANTINOS"

Sep 2005, Miss J McDermott

After reading the net we were dubious about the apartments and resort! However walking up the driveway into our apartment we were pleasantly surprised! Supermarket and phone box at the end!
It was clean and smelt fresh, bathroom had a bin, kitchen area also! A couple of bowls, plates and cups which is all we required as we intended to eat out! Toilet roll provided, maid there twice a week and the only thing that went wrong was the light in the bathroom. We told the owners and despite the time-12am they changed it there and then. It is a small, quiet resort which is what we went for anyway, beach, pool, patio, tavernas and a friendly bar that were clean and nice.
The beach could be seen from our apartment and pool always fresh and clean! Pool bar open most of the time. Tavernas to the left and right! Highly recommend to eat out as so cheap-18euos average for 2 starters, drinks and mains. Especially Antonis, Aroma, Marias, Knights Castle, Stefanos plus many more! Mercedes bar friendly, funny, cheap and entertaining!
The only thing that we can complain about is that is was not for 2 weeks! Overall accommodation, locals, weather and food excellent!
We used the bus twice to and from Rhodes, cheap and on time 9.10 to Rhodes and 3pm back.
I would take toilet roll, plastic bags and extra euros for air-con 9euros a night and loungers 5-6 euros for 2 on the beach.
We would be more than happy to go again only next time for 2 weeks instead!
We met a guy out there who had been going for 5 years and he had no complaints!

When we arrived at the apartments it...

Aug 2005, Miss S.L Lewis

When we arrived at the apartments it all seemed very pretty. The beach was about 50 yards away and a supermarket was even closer. The pool area is really nice with sunloungers all around with parasols on one side.
We were led to our rooms and quite surprised at what we saw. It was very small with two single beds a small table with two chairs, a wardrobe and a tiny kitchen area. It was quite clean yet there was a bit of a smell. There was very little crockery just about enough for two people. There is no chance that you could self cater as there are only two small hobs on the cooker and no saucepans... well there was one very small and dirty one which was only suitable to boil water in. There was not enough storage space for anything and only one coat hanger in the wardrobe so most stuff stayed in suitcases.
Although the pool is cold its not too cold and is lovely to get into when you get way to hot in the heat.
The owner, Sam, and his friend Dimitris were really nice and very welcoming towards the guests. They both speak good English and are very easy to get along with.
The nights to begin with were very uncomfy as it was far to hot. We opted to get air conditioning. Although it is very expensive I would say it was worth it as it lets you have some sleep.
The rooms are cleaned on a Wednesday but the cleaner seemed to ignore quite a few rooms and was actually fired during our stay! All the cleaning utensils seemed to be kept near bags of rubbish which did seem to be very unhygienic. The only towels provided are hand towels so I recommend that you take spare beach towels for when you shower. If you do shower you have to have one quite early because all the hot water runs out and you end having a cold shower.
There is no entertainment at the bar area and there isn’t really anything going on anywhere however the cocktail bar (which gives you 2 of everything you order on happy hour) did have karaoke on quite a few nights which can be very entertaining.
In one review I read it said that Sam did not let 4 people stay in an apartment suitable for two if they wanted to stay longer. However that is exactly what we did and Sam was perfectly fine about it and let us have one between 4 quite happily.
We have never travelled with Kosmar before and I don’t think we will again both our flights were delayed one by an hour and the other by 7 hours. Many people we spoke to that had used Kosmar before said that flights were always delayed. This is my main reason for not travelling with Kosmar. The apartments weren’t too bad but could have been much better. At least made suitable to be 'self catering'
Although Stegna was a beautiful place with a lovely beach etc I would not want to visit there again. I think for the older generation it is a good place but being a teenager I found it too quiet. If my friend was not with me it would have been much worse though!

Aug 2005, supprter 67

Entering constantinos you will go up an uneven slope beside a supermarket. We stayed in room 8 with no curtains and light 24/7,and washing machines starting at 4 am and ending around 6.30.
On the 10th night we had bin bags at windows and 12th night curtains and bin bags, they took bin bags down on 13th night but left tape on the windows. With no where to dry anything we used kitchen chairs as airers and as patio chairs as our chairs went missing.
Our floor wasn’t cleaned until the Saturday 7 days after arriving and had to replace our sheets and pillow case as they had blood stains on them. The patio was not cleaned before and after we left, we got patio chairs on our 10th night and as for sunbeds people left some item on them so they kept them for the whole period they was their.
Bar/reception opened around 11.30 and air conditioning 9euros a nite, Sam is very strict about jumping and splashing. To keep room on if your got a late flight cost 30 euros,20 at other places. Could be a nice place if they had got everything in order.

Aug 2005, Miss G Lineton

Stegna is a very quiet but friendly place. perfect for a relaxing holiday. Constantinos studios and apartments are situated directly opposite the beach, across the only road running through Stegna, which is also quiet.
There are a good selection of restaurants and tavernas, all serving traditional Greek food. Some do have a wider choice, but its not massive.
The apartments are very basic. This shouldn’t be a problem as you wont be spending much time in them as its so lovely outside. Apartments vary in their facilities. My apartment had one hob and one saucepan so is not suitable for self catering. Other apartments seemed to have better kitchens. Constantinos has the only pool in Stegna, in which the owner Sam takes much pride in.
Although there’s not alot of nightlife, Stegna has one bar called Mercedes which is great. Wonderful atmosphere and staff.
Overall my holiday was excellent, though the apartments are very basic, this is the same story throughout Greece.
