This hotel was VERY british. Dont get me wrong, as a rule there is nothing wrong this, but the guests were the main problem during the stay. They were all far too keen to grab beds by the pool at breakfast than anything else. They all walked around the place with what can only be described as scowls on their faces. This greatly reduced the experience. Granted that you dont have to spend time with these people, But at night there is no getting away from them. The walls are paper thin and people only have to breath heavily for you to hear it. We were particularly unlucky with our neighbours. On one side a group of girls shouted at others, and the other side was a woman who wanted everyone to hear her telephone conversation. The breakfast was disappoiting, but the view from the rooms balcony made up for all the other unpleasant experiences which the hotel can hardly be blame for. However, it did take the cleaning staff til 15.30 to reach our room (on the third floor) which is a curious fact seeing how big the hotel staff seemed to be.
great location but a dissapointment
from Youngwoman
I stayed in the carlton for 7 nights with 20 of my family members as we were there for a wedding. I have to say the location was great a 2 minute walk to the centre but the staff there were very rude & unhelpful apart from one waiter who was very courteous & helpful. It cost 5 euro for a sunbed a day which i didn't expect for a 4 star hotel. There was no mini bar or fridge in the room to keep your drinks cool which was dissapointing. We never ate there as everthing was so expensive. The pool closed at 6pm sharp which was a down side also but they kept the pool very clean at all times. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of staying there for the price of it i expected a lot more. Some other family members stayed in hotels close by for half the price & got better treatment than we did in the carlton. The only good thing about the hotel was the air conditioning (which actually worked) & how the rooms were kept clean & clean towels supplied every day.
good and bad points
from giorgigirl
I wanted to highlight the good and not so good points of this hotel. I have just returned from a weeks stay with my family. Whilst the hotel is excellent for its location, cleanliness and has a good swimming pool area for both adults and children (my grandaughter of five years loved the pool) I feel I must comment on the fact that there is a charge of 10 euros per day per room for just having the comfort of air conditioning in your room. Additionally, you also have to pay 5 euros per sunbed if you wish to lay out and enjoy the sun by the pool. These additional costs can use up a lot of your spending money, especially when you add on the costs of your drinks, for example a glass of coke will set you back 3euros. I was also dissapointed in the size of the room, which also did not have any drink making facility or a mini bar to keep anything cool. We stayed on a half board basis and the evening meal was reasonable but I did find the selection of the breakfast buffet poor and did not meet upto my expectations of what a four star hotel should have offered. All in all, yes the Carlton is a good location but I do feel it is not value for money due to the fact that it is not providing basic comforts free of charge which is what you would expect for its rating.
A True Holiday

Without appearing old fashioned we found this hotel gave us all the service you used to receive on holiday. We arrived as the dining room was closing but the reception staff assured us that we would be served, and the waiting staff were friendly and courteous without making us feel guilty, a great start to the week!! Room was 3rd floor overlooking the bay of Naples - perfect. All the staff from room service, reception, bar, pool and dining room appeared to be there for one reason only - to make our holiday a joy from start to finish.
Great Hotel

Great Hotel, Went there 7th July 2006. Lovely staff and good choice of food in restaurant in the evenings, buffet breakfast. Rooms good, we had a bathroom with bath - a bonus for my partner. We had a balcony with seaview - don't bother - noisy road outside and the view of Vesuvius wasn't very clear most of the time. Balcony at back overlooking lovely orange tree filled garden and beautiful pool would be better. Our balcony came into its own on World Cup final night. Great fireworks. Sorrento is a great base for travelling to Pompei and Herculaneum by train and along the Amalfi coast by bus and also lots of little hilltop towns where there are some grea\t walks. Its very easy and cheap to travel around so don't book really expensive organised trips. i.e. Amalfi trip 5 euros by bus and 229.50 on organised trip.

my wife and i have just returned from sorrento where we spent a week at the carlton, the hotel exceeded or expectations in every respect. The rooms were thourouly cleaned every day even the balcony was vacumed, the towels were changed twice aday. The pool was immaculate and never overcrowded.Breakfast was all that you would expect from agood italian hotel and for our evening meal we were offered a choice of six starters and the same for the main course and no matter which we choose we were never disappointed it was all superb. The location of the hotel is ahuge plus( particularly if you are not as young as you would like) being only three minutes walk from the heart of sorrento and yet it is situated on a street which sees little heavy traffic and at night is very quiet. The staff are all very helpfull and friendly`, my wife and i would wholeheartedly recommend the carlton to anyone who puts the quality of their hotel at the top of their holiday requirements
Not Family Friendly no Air Conditioning!
from JD4
After a lot of planning we booked the Carlton Hotel for my family - 2 triple rooms - my husband and I, our 2 children aged 10 and 8, our 1 year old baby and my parents six months in advance. When we arrived we were given 2 double rooms with 2 chair beds and no cot for the infant. I spoke to the manager and explained the rooms were too small and could he help us out - he was not interested and was extremely rude!! Temperatures were high and there was NO AIR CONDITIONING (not avail until June). We put in 2 awful nights in an extemely hot room and when I asked if they could even supply us with a fan I was told were I could go and purchase one!! The staff at the pool were extremely ignorant and constantly harrassed the children if they made noise or even tried to play with a beach ball - my children are polite and well mannered and have stayed in various hotels all over the world as we are frequent travellers and I have never heard anyone speak to them the way the staff at this hotel did. I feel we should have been told that the Carlton is NOT a family hotel when we made our reservation, in my opinion it is more suitable to elderly couples (although there are quite a lot of steps). Our whole experiance has not endeared me to Italy and in my opinion this Hotel and its staff are given the Italians a bad reputation. I have worked in Travel for 12 years so believe me families stay clear.
Perfect location, friendly staff

Just returned from a five days stay at the Carlton International. We booked through the internet with halfboard. We enjoyed our stay very much. The location of the hotel is perfect, close to the Piazza Tasso, the main square. When you arrive on your own without an organized tour you can take the Curreri bus from the airport, which takes approximately 1,5 hours and goes directly to Piazza Tasso. During the five days we stayed at the Carlton, we went by boat to Capri to go hiking, to Ischia to spend the day at the Castiglione Terme, to Amalfi and Positano to go hiking the sentiero degli dei and by train to Paestum. Pompei was on strike in the morning, therefore we decided to go to Paestum instead, which we enjoyed very much, because it was less crowded than the other sites. We left the hotel every morning around 8.30 a.m and just arrived in time for dinner. Therefore we could not spend any time at the pool. The food at the hotel was good, but the service was absolutely superb. Once you entered the dining room, the staff was immediately looking after you, offer a table, bring the menue and the drinks. The room was clean and every day we received fresh towels. Also the room service was perfect. The staff was very helpful. There was no air conditioning in the room altough it was already very hot end of May. We had been told that AC in the rooms would start only June 1st. In the evening it was cooling off so we did not miss the AC much. When we will return to Sorrento, which I hope we will do soon, we will go back to the Carlton hotel. I am already looking forward to our next stay at the Carlton.
Excellent location, friendly staff

We stayed B&B in May 2006 and probably paid extra for a Sea-view Balcony (ask for 3rd - 5th Floor) - magnificent views of Mt Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples and a bit of Capri. Watched the red sun set over Ischcia in the evening. A very clean hotel with friendly, willing staff. We did not eat Dinner but noted that there was a wide choice in each of the 4 courses. Breakfast included scrambled eggs and bacon. It was possible on occasions to hear noises from adjacent rooms, but no noiser than other hotels I have stayed at, and I would guess it was quieter than those on the Corso Italia, other than the noise from the Refuse Truck early each morning so if you want a quieter room I suggest you have one overlooking the Pool. The pool is set amonst orange and palm trees and is very relaxing - deck chairs are free, sun loungers only 5 euros. Drinks and lunch available poolside. Being May there were few children so in August the pool may be busier and noisier. Other than the views and pool it's main asset is it's location, just off the main square and only a few minutes from the Train/bus station, so it was never far to walk to any of the attractions or transportation thereto. Forget the organised Amalfi drive tour and take the SITA bus to Amalfi (2.40 euros) from the train station and the boat back (3.30pm, 7 euros). A similar trip can be done to Positano. I would stay there again because of it's location, staff, pool and views.

This is the best hotel for location and service in Sorrento - without doubt. Going back for honeymoon in July, can't wait.

A very clean and comforable hotel, conveniently situated just off the main square, and close to Marina Picalo for the boat to Capri. Reception staff extremely helpful and with a good command of English. Food excellent, dining room staff - well - lovely, very helpful, very... more
