Great Hotel, great staff, great food = great holiday

A very clean and comforable hotel, conveniently situated just off the main square, and close to Marina Picalo for the boat to Capri. Reception staff extremely helpful and with a good command of English. Food excellent, dining room staff - well - lovely, very helpful, very cheerful, also with a good command of English and a great sense of humour. The only thing we didn't like was the shower, very small and with a 'plastic curtain' on two sides, ugh! Highly recommend this hotel and Sorrento - we had a truly wonderful holiday.

Great hotel and location

This hotel is in a great location its literally a two minute walk to all the shops and restaurants. The whole area is sophisticated and beautiful, no cheap bucket and spade shops all the shops are little boutiques or traditional small shops, they even have armani.
There is a small beach about 10 -15 mins away depnding on how fast you can get down about 300 steps! We didnt think Sorrento was great for beaches though. Pomepi is worth a visit you can get there cheaply on the train, while you take advantage of the views.
This hotel is fantastic for food, breakfast is relaxed with hot and cold food as you woudld expect, but the evening meals are fantastic. The dining room is magnificent with huge windows, large chandelleirs and waitors in dinner suits. Service is quick and food is delicious. They are also very accomodating of vegitarians and fussy eaters!
The room is comfortable, nothing special, but clean and spacious with great mountain views form the balcony (on one side of the hotel), as far as i remember maid service is everyday, with fresh towels.
The pool is lovely, trees growing huge lemons and oranges surround the main pool and baby pool, extemely clean (a little robot scoots around the pool at night). Free deckchairs, but you have to pay a few euros for beds.
The bar is old fashioned but nobody really sits there as there is so much going on in the town, but during the day you can order drinks by the pool from the waitors and pay the bill at the end of the holiday, which is handy.
Overall, the staff are friendly and helpful (our wardrobe door fell off the slidey thing and they fixed it by the time we were back in a couple of hours). The whole hotel is clean, the pool and dining room are the most impressive areas.
Overall if your easy going, have normal expectations and like to go out to the town of an evening this hotel is great.
We were very impressed by Sorrento, the people, the food, this hotel and the weather. Will be going back one year!

This was to be a special holiday for...

This was to be a special holiday for our 45th Wedding Anniversary. First impressions - clean, tidy and friendly. However it is NOT 4 star. Extra payment for sun beds, pool towels and air con in room. No tea/coffee facilities or mini fridge in room. Had a room with sea views (just!) it overlooked a busy road and was noisy. The linen was changed daily by friendly staff. The hotel is just off the main square. The pool is shared with an hotel behind so it is not as dedicated as expected. Access into pool difficult if not able bodied.
We both suffered food poisoning for two days each, but at different times so our holiday was reduced to 2 days. We think we can identify one illness as being caused by uncooked chicken, it was discovered halfway through a meal.
We managed one trip - to Capri. It was a disorganised shambles but that was the fault of the tour company not the hotel.
We cannot recommend this hotel or the travel company. We will not stay there again. We could not wait to get home. If you do stay, have b&b only and a room at the back - it gets the sun anyway. Be prepared for additional hotel costs. Local buses very cheap. Multitude of restaurants and shops within a short walk.

Hotel location is excellent. Hotel...

Hotel location is excellent. Hotel Management left a lot to be desired.
Extra charges for pool loungers 6E, towel 2E, deck chairs were free, Ice bucket 2.50E.
No refrigerator, tea making facility in the bedroom. No ice machine available for guests. Dining room staff surly and food adequate but not 4*.
Tours, which were excellent, often left at 07.30 but Management refused to open the dining room until 07.00 despite requests. With a ten minute walk to the coach this left no time for elderly residents to go to their rooms before going out for the day.
Do not book a room at the front of the hotel. Very busy street with lots of traffic noise and so impossible to have the balcony door open. Room temperature was 25degrees and no air conditioning. I believe that they make a charge of 10Eu/day for the A/C when it is available.
We left the hotel on the departure day at 06.35 with a packed breakfast for two which comprised 2 hard rolls, no butter, one croissant, one small muffin, one tiny container of jam but no knife, 2 dusty apples which were unwashed and two very small fruit drinks. 99% of all the tour breakfasts went into the bin at the airport.
We would not return to this hotel.

The Carlton in general is a lovely hotel. My best advice for Sorrento is just to go B&B and eat out at all lovely restaurants. We booked half board but didn’t eat in the hotel at all as we loved going to all the restaurants.
We did manage to make breakfast a few times which was standard and fine. The rooms were as you would expect and kept very clean and tidy by the chamber maids- we got clean towels every day. The pool area is lovely and again very clean, but you pay 5 Euros for a bed around the pool (chairs are free).
The room safe is free but they charge 10 Euros a day for the Air-con which is shocking! The position is excellent and less than a minute walk into the main square, which we loved.
I would recommend Sorrento to anyone the food and wine is first class, but the ice-cream is the winner- it’s to die for!
