We were sold a family holiday...
1 / 10
Jun 2007, Miss A Mcneill

We were sold a family holiday suitable for 2 adults a 5 yr old and a 12 month old baby.
Told there was all amenities for eating out and that there were shops and restaurants nearby and lots of things for children to do.
Well when we arrived at the airport our transfers were not there. I had to go and find the holiday reps, they finally sorted that out but had no reps come to the hotel with us and was no reps at the hotel upon arrival.
We were sent to a totally different place that was shown on the catalogue, it looked like a mental institute, my son was not impressed with his first holiday.
We get to the room and let me tell you, it was not suitable at all. Nowhere for the buggy to go, nowhere for the suitcases to oh and no room to walk.
My sons bed was a camp bed right at the bottom of the two single beds I was supposed to share with partner, and my daughters cot was in a corner at the other end of the beds in the only place it could possibly fit, right underneath a TV bracket with wires hanging down... sorry but that was it. I didn’t give it a chance.
Tried to upgrade was told all rooms are the same. Had to pay to stay elsewhere with no help from First Choice as they were not willing to do anything for us.
Not only that but the hotel had nothing for children but a pool and small park it also had 1 shop and 1 cafe in its surroundings.
Be clever enough to do research before you go anywhere now, you can only learn from your mistakes and we will never go with First Choice again...

We have just returned from the Club...

We have just returned from the Club Aguamarina.
Stayed in block B, 1st floor room 1020 - has air con (most rooms now have air con in both blocks) and very clean overlooking the gardens and pool area- very nice view.
I went with my husband and 13 year old daughter and at first she was given a camp bed - as soon as the maid saw her she said "no, no!" and returned minutes later with full size, very comfortable mattress - she ended up with the most comfortable bed.
The Block A so called superior block has the advantage only that some of the rooms have a beach view which is very beautiful but not worth the extra for that alone.
The view can be enjoyed from the balcony attached to the bar area in block A and is open to all so no need to miss out. We watched a beautiful sunset over the bay from there.
The public areas in block B were always very clean and well serviced including the bar areas and toilets. This was not our experience in the "superior" block B - toilets were often left unclean and the public areas seemed very crowded especially around the bar area.
The food is very samey but that seems to apply to both blocks - okay if you can fill up on vegetables and salads also plenty of fruit and ice cream. Breakfasts were the best out of the 2.
The staff are very friendly and helpful as mentioned previously above.
The pools were heated and the Jacuzzi like a warm bath-as there are plenty to choose from they do not get overcrowded. Sun umbrellas would definitely be helpful - we found the best time to use the pools was about 5pm when the sun was not so fierce. Access to the beach is best after taking the lift in block A to floor -1.
There are still some steep steps to negotiate and could be very difficult for people with walking difficulties. We did not watch most of the hotel entertainment but what we saw seemed excellent especially for families with younger children.
Would definitely go back - please ignore block A and block B comments on other reviews as they almost made me change to a different hotel and resort - if we had we would have missed a treat!

After reading previous comments here...

Jun 2007, Mr A McFadyen

After reading previous comments here about the dreaded Block B, I was really apprehensive about my stay.
However, although it was not exactly luxurious, it certainly wasn't as bad as I had expected. The room was a decent size for myself, my wife and our 4 year-old daughter; however, I can see that for 4 people it may be a wee bit cramped. It had air conditioning and it was cleaned every day.
To be honest we were only in the room to sleep as the hotel and resort had plenty of things to keep my daughter happy. The pools were good as well as the little play park and sand pit.
The beach, however, was fantastic and only a short walk along it brought us to a little funfair where my daughter spent the bulk of our money!
At night there was a mini disco for children, which they all seemed to love, so I have no real complaints, only minor quibbles which never got in the way of us enjoying a lovely holiday.
If I did go next time then I would like to see what Block A is like, but overall we all had a lovely holiday despite a few little problems.

We booked a late deal at this hotel,...
8 / 10
Jun 2007, Midgley/Williams

We booked a late deal at this hotel, then read the awful reviews, so were very worried about what to expect on arrival.
I'm pleased to say we were pleasantly surprised as had previously been advised we were definitely to be accommodated in the dreaded block B.
The room was very clean, good size, ideal for 2 adults, bathroom including bath and powerful shower above, TV, and air conditioning. The balcony was also a good size although our view wasn't brilliant but acceptable.
The main thing for us was that it was away from any noise like the entertainment and swimming pools.
The food wasn't fantastic but as we had booked a late deal we had already decided to eat out most nights. Saying that we did have an evening meal twice, a little canteeny but a reasonable amount of options.
Lots of entertainment during the day and night for all age groups...we didn't really want a family/kids hotel but did not feel at any time invaded.
Great location next to a natural beach which is clean and a very short distance from the hotel.
The restaurants in the resort we all good in varying degrees and we only went to the Irish bar once, apparently once is enough as it’s the same every night. The Australian bar also had entertainment nights and I have to say they serve the best Sangria.
We also went out of the resort to Mahon and Fornells, both worth going to, Fornells if you like seafood as it hosts some wonderful restaurants that aren't too expensive.
Overall the hotel was far better than we were lead to believe from the previous reviews. I would certainly go back to Menorca and this hotel.

We go to this hotel every year with...
10 / 10
Jun 2007, Mrs S Arslan

We go to this hotel every year with all the children and we are booked to go again this year - 3 adults and 7 children.
The children range in ages from 6 to 15 years and not one of them will go anywhere else because they love the hotel, the entertainment crew, and all the activities that go on throughout the day.
I cannot understand why this resort has got such terrible reviews. It is advertised as only a 3* hotel and as a quiet family resort. It is in this respect fantastic value for money. OK so it gets a bit warm at night sometimes but we don't mind, the rest of it makes up for that.
The hotel staff are extremely friendly, they are the same staff year after year (we have been going here for the past 13 years!) and they will bend over backwards to ensure that our holiday is the best. We are not the only ones; we meet lots of familiar faces in the hotel who also go there every year.
With so many of us, we have required medical help on various occasions where one of our party has had an accident or ear infection or such and they medical staff have been brilliant.
My daughter had a severe allergic reaction one year to something, and the doctor who visited the hotel took us all the way to Ciutadella to the private hospital in his car.
Unfortunately, her allergy turned out to be the sun! However, there is plenty of opportunity for her to enjoy herself at the hotel without suffering from too much sun.
Please do not take the terrible reviews here to heart. We think it's great. Including the food! There is always something to suit every fussy child.
Finally, if it is so bad, how is it that we have to book more than a year in advance in order to get booked in. It is always packed and there is not a single room available now in this hotel for August!

Jun 2007, Mr P Smith

Just got back from Aguamarina. The resort / beach are fantastic and from what me and my partner seen it has the best beach on the island.
We were in block A and had the superior room and found that all previous comments were correct and there is a huge contrast between block A and block B.
Unfortunately, on checking in the room stank which I can only put down to a fault in the drains as it rapidly disappeared when the balcony door was opened. But other than that the room was spacious and offered an excellent view across the bay.
The food was the main let down. As residents in block A we were allowed to use an apparently better restaurant which offered show cooking etc. On the first night the show cooking was a really fed up looking chef frying onions. I know this is show cooking but it's pushing the advertising to the limit!!
Apart from this, breakfast was ok but the evening meal was a fairly poor affair and me and my partner decided to eat out several times over the holiday.
Personally I would recommend Copa's which is a small restaurant on the beach and had great food and friendly service.
Overall we enjoyed our holiday and if you’re looking for a relaxing time on the beach / pool you'll love it. If you’re looking for hundreds of things to do you'll get bored as the island does not offer masses of entertainment.
I would go back for somewhere to chill out but would perhaps try a 4 star option instead.

We went to Aguamarina as our first...
9 / 10
Jun 2007, Miss J Day

We went to Aguamarina as our first holiday as a young family, we took our 8 month old daughter. We had heard a lot of bad things about block B and were worried as that was the block we had paid to stay in.
When we pulled up outside I was very disappointed by the look of it from the outside, but as soon as we went in we realised that it was very clean and the staff on reception were very nice.
The rooms were a bit on the small side but very clean, the swimming pools were great, the pool bar was great with lovely food.
But breakfast and dinner were not my cup of tea, the breakfast was always sparse and always seemed to taste funny! The dinner wasn’t impressive either. the beach is literally a two minute walk and lovely!
The surrounding areas were fantastic and I would recommend this holiday to anyone with toddlers and young children, the mini disco in the evening was good for kids and the entertainment was good.
Also for children they have a really big splash pool and an amazing play area.
A couple of times we went into block A for change and I personally thought it was worse a bit to full of Spanish and Germans for my liking- all locking down their nose at you!
Stick to block B! Don’t read a book by its cover!

As a young couple with no children...
5 / 10
May 2007, Mr D Webber

As a young couple with no children our experience of both Aguamarina and Arenal was a varied one.
The hotel itself was OK if not a little out of date. Obviously we were put in Block B and didn't get one good night’s sleep due to the heat in the room (my partner was actually ill from it towards the end of the holiday).
The staff were OK and the prices were a little high. The facilities at the hotel were also just OK. The pools were clean enough but there wasn't really much else to do.
The food on the other hand was rubbish. The breakfast choice was decent enough but tasted odd and the evening meal was horrendous. We eventually ate out every night after 2 days of the same drab tasteless thing.
The resort was actually quite good. It had plenty of bars and restaurants for our needs but did get a bit samey towards the end. By night 3 I was telling the punch lines to the jokes from the guy in the Irish bar.
On the whole I think if I did have a family I would be a little concerned about the food and the heat in Block B.
Please don't let this put you Menorca as a whole though, it's a lovely place with plenty to do and see.

I’m a 17 year old and I went to...
8 / 10
Apr 2007, Miss K Padden

I’m a 17 year old and I went to club hotel Aguamarina last June. As a teenager I did find it abit boring however I did go with my Nan and my Aunt who has a 5 five year old son, who had an amazing time.
Unfortunately we did say in block B but we did have the opportunity to use many of the facilities in Block A i.e. the gym.
As it was our first time visiting Menorca we didn’t know about the lift in block A, so we ran up and down a hill just to get to the beach which was a bit of a struggle, but when we found out about the lift we were very impressed.
The hotel was very clean and the staff were very polite, the food wasn’t great but it was good enough to eat. I do agree that the prices were very high but as one of the other holiday makers said, after all it is a hotel and most hotels do charge large amounts for drinks and snacks.
However me and my family did go and view the resort and to our excitement we found an Australian bar, English pub, Irish pub and on the opposite side of the hotel an American dinner which did sell alcohol.
We didn’t spend many of our nights at the hotel just because it finished at 12, and to us that’s abit to early. However the entertainment for the nights we did stay at the hotel was brilliant there were traditional Spanish dancers, Robbie Williams’s impersonator and many more.
We did also find two restaurants and a kid’s play area, which included go karts which was great for my aunt’s son, and was only a 10 minute walk from the hotel.
I personally, at my age, wouldn’t return to Club Hotel Aguamarina, not because there’s anything wrong with it, it’s just abit to quiet but I would recommend it to people who just want a quiet relaxing holiday or people with young children, as there is a great nursery for the kids to play in if you just fancy some me time.

I can't believe that so many people...
8 / 10
Apr 2007, Miss L Guthrie

I can't believe that so many people have found this hotel to be so poor.
We have been twice already and are going again in a few weeks time - this time for two weeks. We went with our 11 month old twice in 2006 and found that is was perfect for us as a family.
We went at a hot time of the year but it was lovely with the cooling breeze off the sea and our baby never got too hot or grizzly - which was a blessing for us all!
Yes I agree that for a younger couple there is not a lot to do in the resort, but for a quiet, relaxing and traditional holiday like we used to enjoy in England before travelling abroad became fashionable, then it is perfect.
Ok - so the rooms are a bit small and basic but you don't really spend that much time in it, with the fantastic clean pools and a pretty and safe clean beach to relax on. It was actually great being so close to our baby all night long.
The rooms in the 'B' block were hot but we stayed in them twice in 2006 and this year we only upgraded to 'A' block because we are travelling with other family members.
The rooms were always clean. The towels changed daily and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The food was a bit repetitive but with so many different nationalities and so many people using the hotel they can't please everyone!!
Travelling with the baby we found no problems with finding suitable foods to give her and there were highchairs but you did have to be quick or patient to get one.
I however, being veggie, found it more difficult to eat but I never left the canteen hungry.
The evening entertainment was hit and miss - some evenings fantastic, some evenings ok and some were just boring, but everyone we spoke to enjoyed most of the entertainment. Best of all the entertainment was finished by midnight and the hotel very quiet soon after that, so we all got a good night’s sleep.
During the day there was lots to do if you wanted to join in and if you didn't want to join in you were never hassled about it - unlike some hotels we have been to.
The holiday reps worked hard to help you and even though it was their first season as reps we found them to be very friendly and professional. In fact we plan to meet up with the four of them this year we all got on so well!
For an easy holiday as a family I would and have recommended this resort and hotel.
A wonderful time was had by all and I can't wait to go back.

I am a bit surprised about some of...
9 / 10
Oct 2006, Mrs J Blanck

I am a bit surprised about some of the comments. What do people expect? My family, two adults and three children came here on a two week holiday, not named accommodation, so we just ended up here. We had a fantastic time. We were in Block B and I don't mind not having air conditioner, we just opened the door. The staff were really friendly and were always helpful.
We have traveled a lot, both as backpackers and with tour operators and I would say that this was pretty standard for three stars. The food can be a bit boring but I just stay to one thing for each meal e.g. the fish and that means that everyday has something new to offer. I love the fact that there are three separate areas with pools as well as the beach. It never felt crowded.
We didn't spend a lot of time in the rooms so they aren't very important. Of course, if you want to go out a lot this is not the place. This is a hotel that caters for a relaxing holiday without night life. It all depends on what you want. We liked it and will go back.

We booked this holiday on a late deal...
8 / 10
Oct 2006, Mrs P Wilkinson

We booked this holiday on a late deal and felt we got a bargain. Having booked the holiday we then decided to check the reviews, a mistake initially as we wondered what we were letting ourselves in for.
On arrival at the hotel we were pleasantly surprised. We had a room in block A which was very clean and plenty of room for 2 people. The beds were a little uncomfortable being very hard but we managed to sleep ok just had to get used to them. The room was cleaned daily and fresh towels put out every day. There was some noise from other holiday makers moving around, the walls are not very thick but it wasn’t too much of a problem and having stayed in four star accommodation before it certainly was no worse.
The hotel staff were extremely helpful as were the MyTravel reps in the hotel. We did find the food to be a disappointment though. It was not very interesting and very much the same things every day with just a few changes to the main course. You can however eat out at various places in the local village for a reasonable rate and there was relatively good choice of food in the village. I think if we had stayed for more than a week we would not have been eating in the hotel much at all.
We both enjoy a quiet resort and this definitely fit the bill. There were young families in the hotel but mostly mature couples whilst we were there. We enjoyed the island finding it very pretty and with lots of interesting British history to be found. Everywhere we went was clean and friendly.
We would consider visiting Menorca again in the future and would recommend this hotel to young families and mature couples. I don't think it offers enough for those who like a more lively resort. Saying that nowhere is very far in Menorca!
