plenty of sun sea and rats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
from geri_cole
My partner and I have just returned from our second trip to Sissi , this being the frist to the Marigianna Appts, we arrived at 4.30 in the afternoon and welcomed by Manos the owner ( very sweetman) we had booked for a studio but on arrival he immediately upgraded us to an Appartment room no 120!!!!!!!!! at first glance not too bad and large enough for ther two of us who had NO intention to eat in exept for a morning coffee on the balcony (overlooking the lane)and a few evening drinks before bed. We had to pay 8.50 euros extra per day for air con a little extra cost you need to be aware of as he will tell you not to leave your shutters or windows open in the evening because of the little local night creatures.... all this with a smile on his face.. on the second morning i awoke and threw open the shutters and windows to sit on the balcony.. what I saw was a lot of rat droppings and lots of pink powdery stuff.. and the smell of rat urine in the hot sun is believe me extremely unpleasant... My husband went to inform Manos who saaid he knew about the problem ans he was dealing with it by putting down pink cubes of poison on balconies to attract the rats to eat it and hopefully kill them ... still smiling he assured us he has always had this problem and its no worry as long as we keep the shutters and windows closed in the evenings!! he would this time sweep it up .. the rest of our holiday involved purchasing bleach and swilling the balcony down twice a day!! we felt unable to sit out( part of the attractions) we are well travelled people and expect various standards when you travel to different hot counteries.. this however is not to any standatd and in our opinion ON LOOKS GOOD AT FIRST GLANCE..
Really Nice!

Just returned from a week at MariGianna Aparments, we had an apartment and was fully equipped for self catering. The apartment was really nice, with a verander that overlooked the sea ( room 122) on the top floor. We only booked this 5 days before we went and paid £350 for 2 adults self catering incuding flights with JET2. Definatley worth the money. The apartments were spotless and so were the pool and grounds. The pool was really nice and even had a swim up bar'! I'm surprise that most of the reviews are bad when its really is a lovley family run place and i would definatley return. The only thing i found a little disapointing was the price of the drinks at the pool bar, which was expensive!
Best apartments in Sissi

My boyfriend and I have stayed at the MariGianna apartments in Sissi for a week in the summer for the last 3 years. I would agree with the comments that the rooms are basic, but you get what you pay for and really if the sun is shining and you have a large pool to sit by you won't be sitting around in your room! The aparments are centrally located up a lane within a few minutes walk of the pretty harbour and lots of shops, bars and restaurants. For a relaxing holiday this is the place for you.
Poor experience at the Marigianna Sissi.

We note that reviews vary and this brings a need for caution. We booked from 1st to 14th Oct. Room was small, dark and dowdy. Furniture was decrepid and the ensuite virtually unuseable. Bed was crammed into a corner and we had to climb over each other to get in or out. The balcony was too tiny for two and overlooked roofs and a building site (not the sea). The room was clearly unsuitable for a stay so we approached the owner who was difficult. Showed us a worse room in the basement and said he could not speak English before walking away. Rather than suffer a ruined holiday here we decamped and spent the next twelve days touring Crete by hire car and staying in some lovely and very reasonable priced accomodation. We could not recommend the Marigianna to anyone.
Oh dear!

We stayed at the MariGianna Apartments the last week in September and first week of October 2008. When we booked we read all rooms had a sea or mountain view. On arrival we were shown to our room in the lower level which had a view of a plant and a side wall. The room was filthy so the first thing we did was ask for a broom and dustpan to clear up shards of glass, dust and hair on the floor, overall very dark and dingy. The single beds in the room were only 2' 6" wide and had a raised solid wood end board to them which, being 6' 2" from the headboard meant anyone over that height had their feet over the hard end, very uncomfortable. The toilet seat was broken which when we spoke to Manos was told it happened the previous week. The bath had ingrained scum on it which needed a fingernail to even make an impression on it. The shower curtain was full of mould and filthy. The bathroom had hairs in it. The window in the bathroom overlooked the office and was fixed closed so any smells stayed with you! The computer for guests use was immediately outside the door and on more than one occasion we were woken at night and in the morning by people using it, which because of the placement their voices echoed loudly even when they were talking normally. We complained to Manos who said he would move us to another room. After asking every day we were finally moved on our fourth day to the second floor. This room was a vast improvement on the first one although not clean. We had a double bed and a view of the mountains and a ribbon of sea. It seems towels are only changed if you ask the cleaner and the bedding wasn't changed at all during our stay! Having said all this we feel the apartments would be super if more staff were employed and one cleaner to service 20+ rooms is just not enough. We feel Manos appeared stressed out, wearing too many hats trying to do everything himself and the quality suffered as a result. Vassillis, his son was very pleasant on the occasions he was there. The best thing we can mention are the breakfasts prepared by Barbara which are fantastic and well worth the 5 euros. Manos is a lovely person when relaxed and in fairness to him did move us to a better room when he could. We have visited many of the Greek islands and are used to various standards of acommodation but this was, regrettably, the worst we have ever encountered.
What a Dump

Arrived and collected our room key from the unmaned reception, which wasn't a problem. The room was very dingy, the cooker and fridge didn't work. We learned later that Manos, the owner, somehow disables these when the rooms are empty. As he knew people were comeing in that night you would think he would have taken the trouble to turn them on. We didn't get a wink of sleep because the room was over the car park. The car park is apparently used as storage for higher cars and these were being picked up and dropped off all night. The next morning we approached Monos about a change of room, his reaction to this was to stomp around the pool shouting "Jesus Christ" and to throw the pool cleanig equipment around. He eventualy calmed down and agreed to move us up to the top floor. The maid set off to clean the room but called in the origonal room first and took the bedding and towels up to the new room! While the rooms on the top floor are better than the rest they are still not great. We inspected the room and found two contact lenses on the floor next to the bed! Makes you wonder just how much cleaning was done! We were there a total of 11 nights the room was supposedly cleaned once (the contact lenses were still resident). The bedding and towels were changed once, we had to ask and suffer the wrath of Manos to get this done. There was RAT POOH on the balcony every morning and i actualy saw a rat trotting across the balcony. We have traveled Greece and the islands for 20 years and stayed in all levels of accomodation. Never have i encounterd such a terrible attitude from a greek person. The only good thing i can say about the Marigianna is that i will never have to set foot in the DUMP again!
Loved staying at the MariGianna

Stayed there for the last two weeks of September 2008. Can't believe the other review I've just seen for someone staying the first two weeks. The owner Manos and his son Vassillis (Billy) could not have been more friendly or helpful, going out of their way to sort things out when needed. The instructions we got from the website I booked it on said that night time arrivals would pick up the key themselves. Manos and Vassilis were working 12+ hours a day, they can't be there all the time. We were on a ground floor apartment which meant the balcony/terrace was a bit shaded even when the sun was on it as it was slightly lower than the ground level but the room was also lovely and cool so no need for the air con. The room was clean and kitchen facilities good. Also provide clothes hanging facilities on balconies which is useful. Towels could have been changed a bit more frequently but we never thought to ask them for fresh ones. Location not that near the sea (can't see it unless on one of the 2nd floor rooms) but only a short walk away and also a nice walk into the main harbour area where most of the restaurants are. Two good supermarkets about 2 minutes walk away - seemed to be much better than all the other ones we went into in the main eastern part of Sissi. Great sized pool and terrace/grass areas for sunbeds so was never crowded. Bar and snacks provided all day so if you just want to relax in the sun there is no need to move! Provide a brilliant breakfast service, 5 euros for full english including coffee/tea, rounds of toast/jam and juice. Better value than the continentals you get when booking B&B in most other places. Overall a great place to stay. We met alot of people there who go back every year and if I went back to Sissi (don't usually go back to the same place, preferring to try different areas) that would definitely be the place to stay.
Won't be staying again!!

We stayed at Marigianna in early September. We had a lovely holiday, however, were very disappointed with the accommodation. We arrived in the early hours of the morning after a tiring journey and found the reception deserted. After searching for staff we came to the conclusion that we had to take a key off the shelf and find our room. We found out the following day that the hotel is not staffed through the night due to it being family run apartments with few members of staff. Our room was on the ground floor and as you can see from the photo's is very tired!! When we asked to change room we were told that there were no spare rooms available. We stayed for one week, during this time the cleaner came twice and swept the floor. No clean linen was provided and when we asked for clean towels the manager stated that he would bring us some, however, they never arrived!! I don't mind a basic apartment, however, I do have a problem with a dirty apartment!! I was particularly disgusted with the cock roach in the bathroom. On our last day we had to vacate our room at 12 pm. Our flight was not until the early hours of the following day. After a day on the beach we asked if we could use a courtesy room. However, we were told that this facility was not available. Lucky for us there was a cold running shower in the car park! Sissi was a lovely harbour with lots of lovely restaurants, and a small beach on the harbour. We walked approx two thirds of a mile to another beach to the East of Sissi. Elounda is also Worth a visit.
the marigiana, Gouves
from jacrho
Just off Crete's very busy main road and less than a mile from the main strip of Gouves, first impressions of the main reception, bar and restaurant was pleasant and well presented. We were immediately told that the air conditioning was an extra charge of 8 euros per day, we were charged for the full day of our arrival and our leaving day- thought this was a bit cheeky as we arrived late evening and check out was 12pm! Our room was ground floor, clean, basic....typical Greek 3* (more like our 2*) air con in bedroom only, unfair for that 3rd guest that has the bed in living/kitchen area. Cuttlery was limited, old and rusting, a bit off-putting to be eating in! Rooms were "cleaned" every other day, although the dried pea remained in the bedroom until we picked it up! The shower was left untouched, after a couple of days it became covered in scum. The chairs were not very comfy, relaxing proved difficult, unless sittin on the 2 single beds or out on patio, which was not private. 2 of the staff were friendly, Demo & Andy who worked very hard running the place.(this made it a 3 rather than 2/5) The owners were less approachable, esp the man, who ignored our greetings, even in Greek! Food was ok, pool well kept, pleasant enough for relaxing. Not much to do around there, to get to the main strip, the best place to cross was just to the right of the apartments and walk along the dirt track to the left. The 1st main bit is down by the Rainbow bar. Our favourite road, as it has the Mylos and the Da Vinci Code restaurants, traditional Greek food, very friendly staff. Walk 10 mins past that road, you come to the main Gouves strip, all catered for the British, chips with everything, enough shops for finding those tacky souvieners.
The place to stay in Sissi
from Gerri50
We have just returned from 2 weeks stay at the Marigianna Apartments and it was fantastic. The owner, Manos, and his son, Vasillis, could not have made us feel more welcome. My brother and his family and my husband and I were staying in apartments on the top floor (newly built on in 2007). Our apartment was a studio but it was very spacious with a balcony, and very clean. The pool is one of the biggest for an apartment complex in Sissi (we know because we have stayed or visited some of the others). It is surrounded by grass and is very open and spacious, allowing the breeze to help cool the 85 degree heat! Manos makes a mean English breakfast which is plentiful and at only 4.50 euros well worth it. Vasillis is funny and nice to have a chat with. Both he and Manos speak perfect English, so no problems communicating. We know that guests return year after year after year, so really that speaks for itself. We cannot recommend these apartments highly enough. Its only a five minute wander into the village with plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from. There is a supermarket less than a minute away and they stock everything you could possibly need. We booked direct. Manos arranges the taxi transfer from and back to the airport and its included in the price. The website is www.cretemarigianna.com. You can email direct at: [--]. Go for it!!!

We visited Sissi last October and fell in love with the village. We wanted to return and decided that MariGianna apartments looked good. That was an understatement! On arrival, having picked up a hire car at the airport, we were greeted by Manos and Vasilis (Billy) as if we... more
