Having stayed recently at the Rio Verde with my parents and young daughter (nearly 2 years), I can say that the apartment I stayed in was basic but well equipped with everything you would need although there was no TV and there were quite a few steps up to the complex itself and steps up to the apartment, (the apartments are situated on 2 levels and I was on the upper level). This can be a bit of a pain if you have pushchairs, suitcases etc., to carry up. The apartments are located straight in front of the pool area which can be a bit noisy at times. However, the apartments were located in an excellent position near the shops, restaurants and a walk away from the beach. The supermarket was next door.
The main disadvantage this complex has, is no reception area and no staffing if you have any problems, you have to rely on your holiday rep. (Although, the holiday rep was extremely pleasant and helpful and a board was located within the complex with useful telephone numbers).
The bus routes are extremely good. You can catch a bus opposite the Cala Galdana Hotel, which is located by the roundabout to Fererries for appox 1 euro per person which takes about 5-10 minutes, where you can then transfer to either Mahon which takes about 40 minutes and costs approx 3 euros per person or Ciutadella (both have very good shopping facilities including souvenir, clothes, handbag shops and restaurants).
The Cala Galdana Hotel on the same side as the Rio Verde further down offers entertainment every night and is free to watch. Whilst I was there Abba Gold and The Blues Brothers UK were just a few of the acts that I saw, all very good. Well worth a visit. For the older kids, around the corner in the Oasis Village is a mini disco in the square which starts at 8.30pm every evening which involves local kids and holidaymakers.
There are plenty of places to eat out and I would recommend most of the places and all are child friendly. I would recommend taking a walk to the Sol Gavilanes Hotel which is located on the beach, which you can see quite clearly. The buffet lunch is great with all sorts from pasta, Chinese, to more local food and a wide range of deserts. Take a look out of the restaurant window at the view, it's fantastic.
It's great for couples and families and the beaches are excellent. Although, if your a sun worshipper I would recommend you purchase your own parasol and lie on a beach towel as the sun beds and parasols are quite expensive to hire on a daily basis.
Overall I would recommend both the resort and apartments.
