Our holiday began for me at Newcastle airport our flight left on time and landed in Mahon at 11am.
Our coach transfer only took 20 minutes to get us to the resort of Cala n porter and the playa apartments.
On signing in to the apartments you have to give your passport to the manager at reception who then keeps it for the duration of your holiday, he then gives you the key to your apartment tells you where it is located and then you are on your own to find it which isn’t too difficult as there are just the 2 blocks of apartments, our apartment was within the larger block which held about 24 apartments in total.
First impressions upon opening the door to the apartment.
They were very clean and reasonably furnished.
The kitchenette has reasonable work space and has a 3 ring cooker with a small oven, a fridge with a quite big freezer compartment, a toaster which we only used once it takes about 5 minutes to do 1 slice of toast and even then it is barely coloured, a sink and drainer the cupboard under the sink houses the bin but try and avoid using this as it is a haven for ants.
There were 3 pans in the cupboard above the workspace along with all the cups ,saucers, and plates.
In the drawers below the workspace is where you will find your cutlery and cooking utensils all told the kitchen area was not too badly equipped.
The bathroom was very clean with warning stickers on the toilet telling you it had been disinfected next to the toilet was the bidet and next to that was the bath with shower in the corner was a sink with shelf space next to it for toothpaste brushes etc.
The bedrooms there were 2 of them in our apartment and both were amply furnished with twin beds and bedside cabinets wardrobe space was at a premium and not many hangers were provided in one of the wardrobes you will find a safe which for an extra charge you may use
in both bedrooms there were ceiling fans whilst not as good as air conditioning they made the rooms cool on hot sticky nights they were a godsend some nights.
The main living area had a bed settee, a table with 5 chairs and a TV. The balcony had a table and 4 chairs.
A word of warning whilst we were there it rained for a couple of days and with my kids coming and going it made the stairs to the apartment quite hazardous as they are very slippery when wet.
The main area of the complex consisted of a pool which was permanently cold in fact it was so cold it made swimming very unpleasant.
The small bar is next to reception and has a TV.
Outside the bar to the right is a pool table and air hockey game and loads of outdoor seating down some steps is a bbq area and a table tennis set
also on a small grassy area there is a swing and a see saw oh how i miss the horrible noise the swings made when in use.
All the staff who work there are very friendly and approachable although you will need to know some basic Spanish to communicate with them.
All in all the complex is very well maintained and I could not fault it.
The resort of Cala n Porter seems on the whole to be geared up for parents with young children and older people there is absolutely nothing in this resort for young teenagers as I found to my cost the word I'm bored seemed to cost me a fortune.
the centre of the resort which houses 3 supermarkets and loads of bars and restaurants
and 1 or 2 souvenir shops can easily be walked around in 10 minutes.
Eating out in the resort is an experience in itself depending on budget you can have a kebab or pizza or a full al a carte meal most places offer a full three course meal with wine for about 12 euros a head although it is trial and error to find a place that does a good portion my advice is when you find somewhere you are happy with keep going there.
I found a place called Sam and Eddies on the main road down to the beach opposite la salamander,
it is superb the portions are big and it doesn’t blow a big hole in your budget.
Most bars tend to close at midnight and as the resort doesn’t have that many night clubs it isn’t that noisy after 12.
Most places offer entertainment of some description be it karaoke or cabaret you will find something to interest you.
A place called Sa Passe seemed to be the in place when I was there a different act every night most of them are quality shows although 1 or 2 were total rubbish it doesn’t matter when you are on your third jug of sangria.
The beach is very clean and patrolled by 2 or 3 lifeguards,
a word of warning beware of the jellyfish its not a bad sting but it can cause 1 or 2 sleepless nights.
If you do get stung see a lifeguard as all of them carry a magic potion to put on the sting and it seems to give better relief than shop bought ointment. The walk to the beach is not for the feint hearted you either have to negotiate about 200 steps to get to it or walk a very steep hill.
There is a road train that will take you to and from the beach but at 6 euros a head it can work out very expensive if you have a large family.
I do hope this has been of some use to you and if you do decide to go to the playa apartments if you get apartment a4 please give the cat that visits the complex a stroke from me.
