We arrived at the Palas apartments, and from the outside, our first impressions were that they looked o.k. The reviews we had read tended to be quite positive and as these were not the cheapest available, we were expecting good things.
As has already been stated, a 150euro deposit has to be paid on arrival. We were taken up to the room which had two bedrooms, decent sized toilet (which houses a washing machine), a seperate kitchen area and a lounge. The balcony was a good length, approximately twice the length of a standard apartment balcony with 5 plastic chairs and a small table. So far, so good.
After we had settled in, it quickly became evident of a few 'issues' that we were not so happy with.
Our apartment had 3 sets of sliding patio doors, 1 in lounge, and 1 each in the 2 bedrooms. Of these 3 doors, 2 would not lock and could just be slid open from the outside. We reported this to Maria, the receptionist on the Saturday of our arrival and they were eventually 'fixed' on the Tuesday. Access to our balcony could be reached from the staircase window or the next door apartment's balcony, so we were obviously keen to get this fixed as soon as possible.
The t.v didn't work, but Maria supplied a remote control and 'freeview' type box for it, all channels in Spanish though.
General signs of age and wear are now very evident- wall paint dirty and marked, mirrors on sliding wardrobes cracked, toilet basin surround cracked with sealant coming away which looked dirty.
The sofa in the lounge had been repaired at some point in the past, but still collapsed when I sat on it. The wall mounted light had no shade fitted showing exposed electrical terminals on the light fitting.
4 out of the 5 balcony plastic chairs had only 1 armrest.
The swimming pool is about 10 metres long and 1.7 metres at it's deepest, the water was clean enough. The kids had great fun diving in from a concrete 'stone mound' decoration. There is a slabbed area surrounding the pool, but there is no grout filling the gaps between the slabs which is about 1" wide and 1" deep, so care needs to be taken when walking over them. There were cigarette butts in the gaps and weeds aplenty.
Overall, I'm sure the apartments were nice at some point, but i.m.o, decoration and repairs need to be done a.s.a.p to bring them back up to scratch.
On the morning of check-out, Maria inspected the apartments prior to returning our deposit- she spent a bit of time inspecting the sofa, before finally saying 'o.k' and giving it back.
Don't mean to be harsh as we had a great time in Salou and we would go back, just maybe not to the Palas apartments (unless they were brought up to scratch).

I went on a lads holiday to Salou with 3 of my mates. We found the Palas to be really really good. The apartment was large for the 4 of us, the big balcony was great and the place was really clean.
The pool area was kept in good nick and the pool itself was a good size and very clean. The place was nice and close to the beach and not far at all from the main bars/ restaurants. There's 2 supermarkets a minute either side and if you want to do some cooking the facilities in the kitchen are modern and in good working order.
I'd definitely recommend it for either holidays with mates or going with your family. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time and enjoying their accomodation.

We arrived at the apartments at 10.30am. My first impression of the place was not good and it didn’t look like it did on the pictures. Anyway we tried to check in and the women who couldn’t speak much English on the reception desk kindly told us our holiday was cancelled and Pala Salou was full! Not what we wanted to hear considering we had 2 young children with us. The mix up with bookings may not have been their fault but she was of no help whatsoever and didn’t seem to care about us; basically she just wanted us to leave so she could continue smoking her cigarettes - all she kept doing was waving her hands saying full!
We were in reception for about 2 hours trying to sort other accommodation out and during this time I heard two English guys complaining about the state of their rooms (bare wires was one complaint). Also the pool looked discoloured and to be honest I’m glad we didn’t stay there in the end.
Our new apartments called Aquaria were a lot nicer for sure!

On the way to the apartment from the airport, I was not expecting too much because the other places we had passed did not look so great. However, when we were dropped off outside of the Palas Salou I was pleasantly surprised!
The receptionist spoke very little English, and we were surprised when we were told we had to give a refundable deposit of 150 euros! However, my boyfriend and I soon got over this (we were not told of this before hand) and we went up to our apartment.
As soon as we entered it we couldn’t be happier. The bathroom was a very reasonable size, with a bath, sink, cupboards, and toilet and even a washing machine and hair dryer! Towels were also left for us. The bedrooms included large wardrobes and small chest of drawers. The living room had a TV, settee, chest of drawers, coffee table and large dining table. All these rooms were very spacious and most importantly, clean. The kitchen area included all of the essentials; microwave, Cutlery, toaster etc.
The balcony was long and narrow, and included table, chairs and a clothes rack for drying. Another advantage to the apartment was that it had air conditioning!
Palas Salou is a five minute walk from the beach. On the way you will pass many shops and cafes. If you exit the apartment and take a left you will find a supermarket five minutes after walking.
Overall we were very happy to be staying at the Palas Salou. I would defiantly recommend this place to anyone, whether you're in a couple or family.

I traveled with my husband and two teenaged sons. At the first sight the apartment looked very nice. Then we saw the details that was missing. There were no towels in the bathroom and no sheets in the beds. I tried to tell the receptionist, but she couldn’t speak so many words in English. I had to use the body language and followed her down in the basement to point of what was missing in the apartment. There were also a balcony door lock which was broken, so hotel worker have to mend it.
A few days later we saw water dripping from the bathroom roof. We have to call for pluming work. The wall in the teenagers room went very wet and had black dots. It was a leak in the bathtub in the apartment in top of our. The water leak was fixed but the wall was still wet. Every night we get awaked of the doorbell. There were buttons to push outside the apartment building. Every night pushed the Germans in the apartment beside us on the wrong button and we jumped up from our beds and wonder were the fire was! The sound was very loud from the doorbell.
The last night in the flat at 11 p.m., when I have went to bed, the hotel owner rush in to the apartment with a family and he said that this family are going to stay here now and he wonder why we still were in the apartment. My husband have to tell him that he must be in the wrong apartment, because the Germans in the apartment beside us have left this morning. The owner took our electricity card and try to put it in the other apartments holder. Finally he understood that we should stay one more night in the apartment. We thought after all that happen to us, that this apartment hotel must be the Spanish version of "Faulty Towers".
The apartments look very nice on pictures, but what you see is not what you get!

My family and I spent a wonderful week there in August, we couldn’t fault the accommodation. It was good for the grandchildren. The resort was beautiful and the locals charming and really helpful.
We would go back and stay at the same apartments. 10 out of 10 overall. Not full of typical English abroad which we prefer.
Cleanliness really good, location of apartments very good. Plenty of bars and eateries.
Ice cream fabulous.

Handy hints guide to staying at Palas...

Handy hints guide to staying at Palas Salou Apartments.
On the day of your arrival, be aware that if you arrive between 14.00 and 18.00, reception is closed & therefore so is the front door. Once you are booked in, the key you receive will give you access to this door.
Ensure you have 150 euros in cash to hand over as refundable deposit on the day of arrival (we were not informed). Take a phrase book, the day time reception speaks virtually no English at all, which proved difficult on more than one occasion.
Overall, pleasant place to stay, just bear in mind the points above. Take ear plugs, you'll need them if you have a room which over looks the main road directly in front of the apartments.

Fantastic hotel. We arrived at Reus...

Jun 2006, Mr N Morton

Fantastic hotel. We arrived at Reus early in the morning, well, at about 9pm, and we got lift to the hotel from family members who were staying in the Salou area at the time (thought we would save money instead of taxi!) but we wish we didn’t. It took us about 30mins to actually find the hotel as it doesn’t make it clear as to where it is, but we eventually found it through sheer luck! But, on the bright side, we got there, and it wasn’t what we expected! When we got into our apartments, they were breath taking. Clean and luxury!! We were expecting a hole due to the apartments we saw on the way!
The apartments are based in the old town of Salou, but the new town of Salou was about 10 mins walk away, the beach was a 5 min walk down the road, and everything you need for a self catering stay was a step away.
We stayed in here for a week, but we were hardly in as there was so much to do. We only used the swimming pool once. Its not the biggest in the world, but it was fun, and great to wind down next to.
Two places I recommend you visit are Aquopolis and Port Aventura! We went to these places over two days and we had a great time. The slides at Aquopolis are loads of fun, and the rides at Port Aventura are mind blowing! Dragon Khan!! Wow!
Barcelona is about 1hr 30mins away by train (get on a train early if you want a seat though!) and 2hrs by bus! I went twice, once just to visit neu camp and then again on a tourist trip! Great days out!
The receptionist was great, she did everything she could to help out, but there was communication problems as she didn’t speak English, she knew a couple of words but not many. But, she is learning English!
Overall this holiday was great, there were many places to eat and drink, we found two great bars/restaurants to eat! Both English! So if you do go, go to Rosie’s Return and the British Bar - Pakko who runs the British Bar is a fantastic guy and the staff at Rosie’s were amazing! Both do great food! I had two steaks and they couldn’t believe it!
This place was fantastic and I would go back again! Hopefully in the near future!

First class, best apartments we have every stayed in. Only down side was the swimming pool was out of action for a few days but we were given the use of one nearby at a beautiful hotel.
Would highly recommend. There is an ice cream parlour adjacent and also a friendly bar across the road. The apartments were cleaned to the highest of standards. Reception very helpful with booking tickets for Port Aventura.

My husband Bill, daughter Rebecca and son James have just come back from the Palas Salou apartments and I can say that these are the best apartments I have been in. They are in the quieter part of the town, but a stroll to the other end is not to far. We had a three bed roomed luxury apartment with two bathrooms and a private rooftop terrace as well has a balcony.
If you need any help Peri the receptionist will help, she was great if you wanted to go out anywhere. The only problem is Direct Holidays is not using them next year and I do not know who is.

We have just returned from the Palas...
10 / 10
Jun 2005, Mrs K Mc Gee

We have just returned from the Palas Apartments in Salou situated in the old town area of Salou. These apartments are the finest apartments that we have stayed in so far in Salou. We have returned to Salou several times and will return to these apartments again.
We had a 2 bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor with a pool view. Apartments consists of large bathroom including washing machine. which is an excellent idea.
Large lounge with sofa bed, TV, large dinging table with 6 chairs, twin room and double room. All have veranda double doors leading to the veranda with more table chairs. also clothes hanger there for your washing. plenty of storage space. Kitchen well equipped. Recycle bins across the road to empty your garbage and recycle every day. Linen change once a week, but we had a towel change 3/4 times a week.
There is no restaurant or bar here but you have any amount of restaurants close by and also bars. A very good area especially for your children. there is a ice cream parlour within the complex also a chemist, boutique. Peri the lady in charge is very helpful.
There are so many restaurants to choose from but if you want a nice meal at a keen price Danny Boy is the one situated close to the beachfront and the shopping area.
There is a small restaurant next door to the apartments to the right that serve all day breakfast, baguettes - it is a bakery and they have excellent pastries and breads. Not expensive. The supermarkets are close by within a few yards and within 3 minutes walk to the large supermarket. The train station is within a few minutes walk if you want to do travel further.
Shopping - this is the area to be in and you are within a 5 minute walk to the beach - three euro for a sun bed and well worth it. Lots to do in Salou and not forgetting Port Aventura. It is well worth buying the tickets here before you get there as you can get a good deal for several packages.
A must is the fireworks display, which takes place at midnight.
A good time to visit is early evening therefore it gives you 5 hours to do all the different things there and then get a good viewing seat for the fireworks. You need to go there another day to do the water park Caribe. A taxi ride from the apartments is about 7 euro.
A good idea is to carry very little with you and to have a back pack with a dry tee shirt and a change of shoes if possible as you get soaked. The water rides are excellent and the lines are shorter in the evening. If you have prebooked tickets you do not have to stand in line as long.
And finally a trip to Salou would not be complete if you did not venture to Barcelona and visit Nou Camp. You can get the Planas bus or train to Barcelona. If you take the bus get off at the 1st stop which is at the hotel Sophia and walk to the grounds - 5 minute walk.
Again I must say that our stay in Salou was excellent. I travelled with my 2 teenagers and there was something for us all to do.
