Oct 2006, Mr M Taylor

We stayed at the Monteplaya over the half-term period, on a half board basis. The hotel was booked as part of a package cobbled together by Holiday City - an internet advertising company based in Swansea.
First impressions of the hotel were very good. It is well located along the seafront in Malgrat de Mar and the entrance leads off of the main walkway where there are numerous gift shops, bars and restaurants.
The reception area was spotless and all of the ground floor facilities (restaurant, lounge/TV room, bar and lobby) were similarly well presented. The receptionist was very helpful and we were checked in within minutes and on our way to our rooms.
Only one lift and although this was not an inconvenience to us, in high season I can imagine it proving a nuisance to those who really need to use one.
The corridors were well decorated, lit and cleaned and this was the last week of the season!
Our rooms were also of a high standard. Very clean, a nice balcony and a sea view.
Down points were no fridge, not enough bedding (and although it was hot during the day it gets cool at night in October) and we did notice that the sound insulation is poor between rooms.
Breakfast was served from 8.00 am to 9.45am. Dinner was served during a one hour slot from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. I'd read some bad reports about the food here but I have to say that I had no complaints. At breakfast a buffet provided cereals, juices, cold meats and cheeses, breads (including toast) preserves and tea and coffee. There was also a hot selection serving bacon (Spanish streaky!) eggs, beans, sausages (sometimes Spanish style) black pudding and other vegetarian options on the hotplate. Dinner was buffet style and again there was a great selection. We had Paella on two nights, steaks, chops, lasagnas, pasta, fish and there was always a choice of chips, potatoes or pasta and a good selection of vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and green beans.
Drinks in the hotel are average prices but there is a supermarket less than a minute's walk from the hotel so we stocked up there everyday and had a few drinks on the balcony. There is a 'happy hour' three or four times a week and a round of drinks for 5 of us cost around 7 Euros so keep an eye out for the signs.
Entertainment was poor for a family like ours as we have kids aged 16, 13 and 11. It was mainly singers playing to an older audience and bingo a couple of nights but there is a pool table and a TV room. The internet is available in the lobby but quite expensive.
Another plus point for us. A totally smoke free hotel!
The pools are nice. Pretty cool when we were there, thus there was always room for a swim but I would imagine that during the Summer months it would be pretty crowded. Sun beds are well provided and there’s lots of areas to sit in, in pleasant surroundings.
The beach is very near and we found it a nice, clean beach to sit on.
Malgrat is okay and if you turn right out of the hotel, Santa Susanna is right on the doorstep too.
Another plus point is the local rail connections to Barcelona for 6 Euros return or Blanes for about 3 Euros return. Calella, Pineda and other nice resorts are also easy on the rail network and we found the service very punctual.
Overall, the Monteplaya is good. We'd certainly return again out of season and we congratulate the staff and management for providing a very clean and well presented hotel at good value for money. Thanks!

Sep 2006, Miss L Thompson

The hotel its self is very clean and the two swimming pools with waterfalls are lovely, but freezing as usual. There is also plenty of space for sunbathing with a top terrace full of loungers.
The food is certainly nothing to write home about the breakfast choice is fairly good but nothing is hot bacon, eggs, sausage and beans all clock cold!
The evening meals began ok for the first few days plenty of salad choice but only one meat and one fish dish but was fairly warm (not hot) then it all went down hill, meat, vegetables and fish all cold not even Luke warm and we were not the only ones who thought so. Cold chips and salad gets too much every day.
But never the less if you turn out of the hotel to the left after a couple mins walk there is a road known as bar street it’s full of English and Dutch bars doing great food.
Legends is great extra large portions and a Sunday lunch to die for but if its pizza your after visit my mate Jordi at The Blackbull (best pizza in all of Malgrat) you can also watch all of your soaps plus all the sporting evens plus daft DVDs of bulls getting their own back, kids doing stupid stuff etc...
Be careful of all his tricks I just know he will catch you out with something so be warned!
The resort is full of gift shops, restaurants, pubs, bars, cafes, hotels and super markets you are never stuck for something to do.
I have been going to this resort now for 11 years and would recommend it to anyone you will love it whether you are young, old, couples, families or in large groups some thing for everyone.

Hi I was at the Monteplaya hotel in June with 7 friends for my 50th birthday it was fantastic hotel. It is spotless, staff very nice, food ok but there is always something you can have.
I would go back. Visit Bobby in the shamrock bar he makes you so welcome just 5 mins down the road to you’re left as you come out the Monteplaya.

Jul 2006, Mr I Harris

My family and I stayed at the Monte playa in May 2006 and are going back in September 2006 for the 4th time.
The journey with ferris coach holidays was a pleasant and comfortable journey with plenty of leg room and comfort stops. The couriers and drivers are very friendly on board.
The Monte playa is a superb 3 star hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable with clean towels available each day. The rooms have air conditioning, hair dryers, and safes. The hotel itself is spotlessly clean.
The food is edible could be a little better, the hotel cater for all nationalities .Restaurant staff are friendly.
Hotel entertainment could be more varied, but a pleasant atmosphere, entertainment stops at 12 o clock which is good for children staying at the hotel.
The hotel has nice gardens and a Childs play area, hotel pool is unusual shape but very nice, also a sun terrace, plenty of sun loungers so you don’t have to go down early to put a towel on the loungers.
All staff at the hotel are very friendly and pleasant welcomes you on arrival. Bar staff are superb and make your holiday very enjoyable and entertaining.
As for the resort of malgrat itself it has good bars and restaurants, and within easy reach of other resorts by train. It has a nice clean beach with a few bars on. Malgrat have alot of nice gift shops.
Highly recommend the resort.
Hi to all the staff, looking forward to seeing you all in September Thank you all for making our holidays enjoyable.

The worst hotel we ever had. The...

Mar 2006, Dr OZA Zaichit

The worst hotel we ever had. The hotel is situated in the chain of the same type hotels along the main very busy street where you certainly can not walk normally since you need to waive between people because the street is so narrow and it is full of gift shops. So, after first day you are annoyed.
The beach is nearby and is narrow too, but you need a patience to go there. It is full of Dutch and Germans shouting in one meter from you, so no private place at all except if you go further along the beach to the city center. We had 19 days of nightmare.
We could not sleep either during night time or in a day time because at night time there is a loud music till midnight (just in front of a room), it would be ok if it were not one and the same music for 19 days, repeating every 4 days, after midnight the drunk crowd is shouting and beating each other almost till 5 o'clock when cleaning machines start to clean the street, during the day, others close their rooms doors so loudly that you awake every 5 minutes if you want to have a sleep after sleepless night.
Night clubs are expensive even so they advertise free drinks (free drink actually is 330 ml of beer), whisky is 6 euros. Night life is full of drunk youngsters and other drunks, there are some battles between drunks from time to time, so avoid walking this street after 2 o'clock. The food in the hotel is so so, you need to buy your own drink and they charge you more than two times more than in a shop. The dining room is always busy, it is hard to get a food because people seem to be hungry and hasty.
There is no use of hotel swimming pools because they are small and they are full of kids. There is an internet in the lobby that is so expensive that you decide not to use it. The stuff is almost unfriendly and dull (seasoned workers). Towels are changed regularly. Yes, one thing, the walls in the room are transparent, so do not speak loud, wash and go to toilet in silence, otherwise your neighbours hear all your steps.
Try to wake up and go to breakfast just when it begins, otherwise you face a hasty crowd. All in all, try to go to another city, to Blanes for instance, it has wide streets and wide uncrowded beaches. There you rent an apartment or buy a hotel room in a quite atmosphere. If you like drunk youngsters and night life full of extreme, then go to Malgrat de Mar to one of the hotels situated in the same street as Monteplya hotel or nearby, in the evening you can have a bottle of cheap vine on the narrow beach surrounded by drunk teenagers.
Actually, in Malgrat de Mar the three star hotel nearby the railway station is really different, at least not so crowded beach and no walking street nearby. Also, do not take half board if you travel without kids. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes around, it will be cheaper and more diverse to eat there or take the food away.

Just returned home from a 2 week...

Aug 2005, Mrs M Fenton

Just returned home from a 2 week holiday in the Monteplaya in Malgrat De Mar.
The Hotel was fine as a 3 Star Hotel, although the food in the restaurant for the Evening meal left something to be desired, if they had sliced Turkey in gravy on a Monday evening you would get sliced Breaded Turkey on a Tuesday. The salad selection was not the best either, breakfast was not so bad if you got in at 8am for the first round of food once this had gone it was not sparkling.
If you are thinking of staying at this Hotel i would recommend B&B and not half board.
Watch out if you are driving down and planning on leaving your car in the car park. they will charge you an extra 10 Euro a day, the car park is secure and they do have CCTV on it, but they do not tell you it is an extra charge when booking.
Over all we had a good time in the Hotel, if we were to go to the Costa Brava again and to stay in Malgrat we would think about staying at this Hotel.
If you do stay here go and visit The Black Bull English Bar and say Hello to Jordi he will tell you you have gone the Wrong Way if you do not visit. Watch out for his tricks!!!!!!!!!

Aug 2004, Mr Mick Aherne

Nice rooms. hotel very clean. towels changed regularly, but the staff apart from the cleaners are not very friendly. A family run hotel. Recently refurbished. 2 small pools and tidy gardens to sit out. The food is only so-so with some evidence of recycling. For instance, morning sausages (revolting) will turn up in one of the evening meal dishes, some of which are edible but most are indescribable.
Dining room isn’t big enough so people have to share with strangers. mainly German or Dutch. Drinks quite expensive, a bottle of house about 7 euro (1euro.20 in supermercado). All in all not a good holiday, Malgrat is the most boring place we have been to.
