We stayed at the St Christoper Inn...

We stayed at the St Christoper Inn Hostel which is in an ideal location - just round the corner from Waverley Station (the main rail station) and directly across from the Edinburgh Dungeons. The hostel itself was in an old building and the dorm was a bit cramped, but the beds were relatively comfortable and had duvets instead of the normal sheets. The toilets were in need of a good clean but still usable. The shared shower block was right next to our room and you could hear them being used through the wall starting at about 6.30 am. Breakfast was included which consisted of toast and cereals with tea/coffee and fruit juice.
We went to the Edinburgh dungeons and most enjoyed it, although there is a bit on the way round where you sit in a boat, we think something malfunctioned as we were left in complete darkness for at least 5 mins with nothing happening. I would highly recommend it.
For our evening meal we went to TGI Fridays and met up with a friend, it was good but the size portions seem to be getting smaller every time we go. Please note any 10% off vouchers you have can only be used on the main menu and not on the 2 course for £10 menu.
We then headed off on a Ghost and ghouls walking tour of Edinburgh, hosted by Mercat Tours. The guide was very knowledgeable about all the legends and more than happy to answer any questions. The tour included going down into the vaults which are meant to be among the most haunted in Britain, in fact a few days before we went a television crew were there filming for Living TV's Most Haunted show. We had bought the extended tour which ended with a wee drink in the Mercat tours main office and more stories, to be honest if I were doing it again I would miss this bit out as it didn't have the same atmosphere sitting in a brightly lit room as it did outside in the dark!
The following day we had a wander along Princes Street and round the shops. I would recommend going up the back of Princes Street for something to eat as there are many pubs offering good deals on food

Jan 2006, Mrs J M Pettitt

We took a special offer from a local Lincolnshire paper for a return ticket from Newark Northgate station to Edinburgh return for £15 and we had to book in advance to book seats. The train journey was quick & smooth.
We left at 7.30 & we arrived in Edinburgh at 11 o'clock. St Christopher's hostel was basic but was very close to the station & very central for the city. Our B&B cost £25 because we had booked a twin en-suite room but other rates were cheaper if you shared with more people. Breakfast consisted of as much tea & coffee as you wanted , as much cereal & toast as you wanted with marmite, peanut butter, jams & chocolate spread.
The November day we arrived was warm & sunny with people sunbathing on the terrace below Princes Street. There was plenty to do during our 4 day stay. We took open topped bus tours, visited the castle for a guided tour, visited The Royal Yacht Britannia, visited museums & Art Galleries & shopped until we dropped. We are hoping to return to visit Hollywood Palace & other places that we didn't have time to visit. It was a great break & there were lots of eating places including St Christopher’s where we were staying.

The holiday was lovely. I went with...

Apr 2005, Miss R.J Atkins

The holiday was lovely. I went with my dad, and found it truly amazing what it is possible to do in 36 hours.
We travelled by easy-jet, which is cheap and efficient although future customers should be warned you don’t receive free food and drink! The flight lasted just under an hour, and the bus service to take us into the centre of town was very good, quick, and the driver was very friendly! One thing in Edinburgh that should be highly recommended is the amount of trendy cafés and restaurants that are open throughout the day; full of lovely staff and great food!
The scenery also is gorgeous and when climbing up the grassy hills and cliffs to "Arthur's Seat" you get a true look at the countryside and city combined. In the evening there are plenty of things to do. For example, the pubs are of large supply, and have no set-by-law last orders! Also the amount of beautiful theatres is quite surprising for a small city.
Even though we stayed in a youth Hostel, the accommodation was lovely, and there were plenty of nearby restaurants to pop into for breakfast. We only had two days, so we did little sleeping and lots of sight-seeing (this is also an easy task because of the amount of tour buses that travel the town). The great thing is, if you do want a nice hotel then you have a good choice, all very close to one another. Edinburgh is a great place to stay, as there aren’t many tourists, and the weather is cool, but pleasant. The people are lovely, and very laid back, and the food is great. In fact the only thing I would say is not very pleasant is the New Houses of Parliament; the locals also agree on this!
The variety of options for a day out or a holiday are in great quantity and quality so I would highly recommend Edinburgh as a great, cheap place to go!
