This accommodation was average in...
6 / 10
Jul 2007, Mr R Baillie

This accommodation was average in every way. The pool was ok although not too big but it did catch the sun until 7pm every day (when it was out).
The internet was available (although at a moderate cost) and the staff were reasonably friendly.
The rooms were nice and clean and the linen was changed - what we worked it out to be - once a week.
The big plus this hotel has going for it is its location. Slap bang in the middle of the beach, the Kasbah, the Yumbo; it was perfect for day and night-time activities.
I am not sure if I would go back to this hotel and if I did, it would purely be as a place to put my head down at night.

My first opinion of the Walhalla was...
10 / 10
Jul 2007, Miss K.L Mottram

My first opinion of the Walhalla was that the apartments really needed updating and that the man who greeted us was very miserable and spoke very little English, and also the rooms were quite basic, but then things brightened up after a nice sleep on the very comfy beds and waking up to the sun shining through our room.
Downstairs the pool area was very clean and the people were very friendly. The pool bar was also very nice with the lovely people who worked behind the bar area...the food was great and very cheap!
Near the Hotel was the Yumbo Centrum...a shopping area with lots of bars, cafes, and small shops great for souvenirs and gifts! It's also brilliant on the night with people dancing and singing and lots of drag artists putting on great shows!
However there was one great place for food which was a short walk round the corner from the Walhalla, the restaurant: The Red Cow, it had excellent service and catered for everyone the food was brill!
Moving on the excursions where also a must the visit to Sioux City the cowboy town was a must see! It was great for people of all ages and was a night to remember.
Also the Aqualand was a good day out it wasn’t the best water park I’d been too but was something to do instead of lazing round the pool on most days.
Then the beach is beautiful the sand is very hot and the water lovely and warm but beware the nudist beach!!
Overall I loved the Walhalla and the destinations around it....ignore other comments as it is a fab holiday hotel and I would certainly go back I give it 10/10 at a 5***** rating... loved it!

Just come back from Walhalla...

Jul 2007, Mr P Mottram

Just come back from Walhalla apartments, brilliant.
Yes the night porter who greets you with your keys is miserable, but other than that you never see him unless you show up in the early hours.
Regarding having to hire kettles for a cuppa, we just used the pans to boil the water, takes a little longer but does the same job.
Rooms are huge and very clean with loads of hanging space. We had room 504 (top floor) brilliant view of the sea. Cleaners came on a regular basis, and no problems with theft. Hired a safe for 25E with 10E back after holiday.
The pool is clean and of a good size, sun loungers are locked up till 9.00am.Kev,John and Dave are great bar staff hosts, you can get a super breakfast for about 4.50E.
They have a bbq on Wed, quiz night, Thurs and Karaoke on Fri. Listen to the reps at your welcome meeting, they give some good advice, and keep away from the Anfi rep (time share).
If you leave the apartments, out the gate turn left up the small hill, Red Cow, great place to eat, opp is the supermarket open 8-10 and next to Hard rock cafe is the Yumbo centre full of bars and shops.
Hope anyone who goes as a great holiday like we have would definitely come back, and go on the Sioux City trip, it’s a must for the western fans.

Jun 2007, Mr SJ STtarr

Even though the apartments and the grounds were kept clean and the staff were warm and friendly, it’s not the place I would take my family too again.
We were told that these were the ideal apartments for a family holiday. Yes, during the day maybe, but at night, it turned into something like a club 18-30 complex.
The shouting, bad language, banging and moving around of furniture, from about 2oclock through till around 5, was unbearable and totally unacceptable. Nearly every morning, families were complaining to either the rep or the receptionist about the level of noise and lack of sleep people had to endure from the previous night.
It even woke my 12yr old stepdaughter up on a few occasions early in the morning and she came into our room shaking and crying because she was so scared that these louts were going to get into our apartment.
There was even an elderly couple who had brought their children and grandchildren.
Stopping on the ground floor, and these louts would press their buzzer or bang on their door when they come rolling back drunk from the nightclubs thanks but no thanks, never again will I take my family to the Walhalla apartments.

Jun 2007, Mrs S Jones

Arrived in early hours to a non English speaking man who pointed us in the direction of our room.
Being self catering with four children we expected the basics like a kettle, microwave etc but had to be hired for extra charge. Room was spacious but had cockroaches and mice visiting on a regular basis.
Reception would close between 1pm and 5pm which was a nuisance when wanting to cash cheques.
Children loved the pool but during the second week a few groups of twenty something’s arrived and were very boisterous playing volley ball and getting drunk around the pool.
Being on the ground floor we were also at risk of getting hit by the many objects being thrown from the balconies which included shoes, coins and food to name a few.
On a good note we were close to Yumbo centre and Kasbah where there was entertainment and a good selection of restaurants and shops. Was a bit dubious about gay scene before going but turned out to be friendly and discreet.
Short walk to beach where there were wonderful views of sand dunes and plenty of water activities for kids of all ages. Aqualand and Palmitos Park are a must if you've got kids. They'll love em.
Airport was a nightmare so won't be going back, having been to Gran Canaria for four years running.

I was debating whether to rate the...
10 / 10
Jun 2007, subculturehero

I was debating whether to rate the Walhalla a 9 or a 10 but the minor negatives were through no fault of the apartments, so they get a big 10 from me!
No, the guy that greeted us did not speak very much English but c'mon guys...you're going to another country - at least give the language a go! It adds to the fun, anyway! Don't just expect everybody to speak English, just because you do!
The lift is only big enough to fit one person and a suitcase in at a time and 2 people with no suitcases. When we got up to our room (one at a time) we were nervous because of all of the bad reviews we had read on here, but we were very pleasantly surprised! The room was spotlessly clean.
There was no kettle, toaster, or hair dryer but there are pans (which we used to boil water) and who wants to blast heat on their head in 31 degrees anyway? If you're that bothered about toast - go to the pool bar, it costs as much there as it would to hire the toaster for the week but you get it made for you!
The cleaners came in every day and made our beds, changed the towels and mopped the floor. We were only in the room once when the cleaners came round and they were very friendly and thorough!
The staff on reception were very friendly too, the only complaint I have is about our holiday rep who was rude, pushy and made us feel very uncomfortable as we caught her laughing at us. I'll be putting in a complaint through MyTravel about her but this was no fault of the Walhalla.
The pool was clean and the food and drink in the pool bar was reasonable and tasty. We didn't have a problem with bugs or mice in our room as with other reviews I've read. In fact, I only saw 3 cockroaches all week and none of them were in our apartment!
In all, we had a fab holiday and I'd sum up the Walhalla as clean, comfortable, and friendly. It is very central and near too many facilities, the Yumbo Centre, supermarkets, the beach.
Everything is within 5 minutes walk yet it's tucked away ever so slightly so it's easy to get a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by the busy of the main street. Top location, top apartments. Very reasonable price for what you get!
Just a quick footnote - I don't understand what all the reviews were about that commented on how it's not good for people with difficulty walking or on some reviews stating it wasn't ideal for those with "a fear of heights"?
It's only a 5 storey hotel for which the lift serves all 5 floors and the hill from the beach in both directions from the Walhalla is very minor and quite short with plenty of places to rest on the way up (Friar Tucks is one of them and I would highly recommend that pub - it's 24 hours I think and we received a very warm and friendly welcome and good, cheap grub too!)
If anyone reading this is deciding whether to stop at the Walhalla - I do recommend it! Don't expect luxury, but expect basic, simple, CLEAN facilities and a comfy night’s sleep.
PS - the safety deposit boxes come in the form of a fixed to the floor white safe called El Safe. It's 20 Euros to rent (but you get 10 back when you had the key back in) make sure you read the instructions on how to work it and it's insured for up to 3000 Euros from forced entry. Once you set the code it's very simple to use!

Jun 2007, Mr G Doherty

I have just got back from my holiday and although we had a lovely holiday I thought I would mention that my stay at the apartment wasn't the best I have been in.
We arrived in the night to be greeted by one of the most unhelpful men I have come across, who just pointed in the direction of our apartment, which we had to find ourselves my 3 children were very tired so it would have been nice to have been shown where it was.
The room was ok but there was no kettle unless we wanted to pay to hire one .On the plus side the pool was quite nice and we were near the beach, the other members of staff were also nice. Even though we enjoyed our holiday I wouldn't go back to the Walhalla.

Wow, fab holiday first time in Walhalla.
Excellent service from all members of staff nice and friendly, great for the kids and loads of activities to do (you have to do the excursions).
Very clean room, no problem with theft. Not sure why people complain about no hair dryer etc, maybe need to check before booking holiday and really what is a couple of Euros compared to the prices in the UK.
The Yumbo centre was fab for shopping, nightlife and food, as it was a gay area the people were really nice 10/10.
I would advise anybody to stay here. We have just booked to go back this year!
10/10 to this hotel.
See you soon. Oops big thank you to the MyTravel rep Lindsey, great communication and very helpful.

May 2007, Mrs H Williamson

On arrival we were met with the night caretaker who spoke no English and just pointed for us where to go, which was up lots of steps as we were to stay in the bungalows!
We were moved from the bungalows to the apartments the second week as we had a family of mice in our bungalow!
Apart from that the Walhalla gave my family a lovely two week holiday, made mainly fun by Kevin and John who run the pool bar. They were very friendly and the place was very child friendly.
On the downside, the Rep that kept trying to get us to go on a free day out, really deserved a duck in the pool! She was a pain! We told her we knew it was time shares but she was having none of it. We spoke to a lot of families that had been on this free day, and they had been kept in a room for 5 hours being tried to sign for the time shares!
When we told the Rep this she got quite aggressive, which will be reported on! The actual My Travel rep Lindsey was lovely.
We will be going back to Walhalla, will be staying in the apartments, and ducking the Anfi rep!

May 2007, Mr S Ward

We arrived at the Walhalla at 2 in the morning the night porter spoke no English, he just gave us a key without saying anything then turned and sat back in the office!
The apartment itself was very clean, although the facilities were very poor with a kettle and toaster costing an extra 20 Euros!
There were 4 of us on this holiday and after reading that there was only 15 litres of hot water between us it meant cold showers for most of us.
The shower head was also broken so would not stay on the wall and we were told it could not be fixed the week of our stay.
There was only one good thing about this apartment and that was the pool and the pool bar, the pool was cleaned every morning and so were the surrounding areas. Loungers were locked until 9 am which meant no one could put their stuff out early.
The pool bar was open all day which served food and drink. There were also 2 outside pool tables and a table football to keep you occupied.
All in all it was a great holiday and a really good area with plenty to do and I will be going back again, however I will be finding somewhere different to stay!

May 2007, Mr C A Jones

I have come back from a wonderful week in Gran Canaria. I stayed at the Walhalla apartments and after reading all the negative comments, I felt that I had to put my comments.
As regards the accommodation it was very spacious and clean, my room was cleaned on the days that was stated and being two guys we were quite untidy.
The receptionist was very helpful. The apartments were very close to the Yumbo centre but far enough away from it as not to get disturbed. The pool bar was very good and especially the happy hour
I would highly recommend these apartments to anyone and we will definitely going back soon.
Really enjoyed my holiday.

We visited Gran Canaria in August...

Jan 2007, Miss K Mullins

We visited Gran Canaria in August 2006, after coming off a 4 1/2 hour flight and just getting on the transfer coach we were told that the apartment we should have been staying in was fully booked.
So we were allocated Walhalla, we were disappointed as the Dorothea apartments we were meant to be in were apparently for young couples like ourselves.
We arrived at Walhalla and were pleasantly surprised, very clean, maybe need updating, but we Brits always expect more
The holiday rep was absolutely useless she just left us at the hotel, we spoke to the reception staff who were lovely and helpful, we could not have asked for a better service.
We were allocated a large room with 3 bedrooms as there was only 2 of us we had plenty of space, we were on the 4th floor, we didn’t plan to do any cooking, we were on holiday after all, so even though they were only 2 rings on the cooker it didn’t matter to us.
We never saw any insects, mice or anything like that, we did have to be up early to put towels on the sun loungers but I noticed that on every holiday I go on so, its nothing I wasn’t expecting. Didn’t even need the air conditioning as rooms were cool in the evening.
Minutes walking distance from Yumbo Centre, Kasbah, Beach, and all local amenities were at hand, lots of restaurants to choose from even McDonalds.
We had a fantastic holiday and would definitely go back plenty to do in the daytimes and evening.
I would really recommend the hotel; we are a young couple in our early twenties and loved it. I would definitely recommend the Belle Cafe, drag queens
Bad Points! Direct holidays reps, nowhere to be found when you do manage to get hold of them absolute waste of time, we found our own way around.
Hotel didn’t provide any entertainment what so ever, gifts shops how many leather items we need please sell something good.
