Escape Puerto Rico for reasonably priced supermarkets. Puerto Rico food (poor) and bars are expensive. 5 Euro for a G&T and 6 Euro for cocktails for example. Food in Maspalomas was better and even a little cheaper 35 Euro for two starters, drinks and mains. The beach is good. Moped hire with insurance is nearly same price as small car hire. Go to Taurito for Jet Ski and Kayaking. Dolphin spotting can be done from Puerto Rico (pricey at 25 Euro though).
Go to 'Malecon de La Habana' in Las Palmas for Salsa and superb Mojitos (that shame Puerto Rico for quality and price).

Submitted By: Ms R NicklessMontebello is situated in the hills above puerto rico with great views. Ten minute walk down a series of steps to the commercial centre or 15 minute walk to the beach. Nice walk down but recommend a taxi back up, especially after a few drinks :-) a bargain at just over 2 euros.
We had a studio apartment (montebello has two types, one bed apts and studio apts.) Our apartment was fresh, well decorated and clean with all the basic amenities you would expect of a self catering apartment. Maid service is every day apart from Thursday and Sunday. Towels changed frequently but sheets didnt seem to be changed in the week we were there. Not a big thing for me as I always sleep on the top cover due to the heat!!
Pool area is a real attribute of this place. Although space around the exceptionally clean pool is limited there is a fantastic sun terrace with plenty of beds.
The pool bar at Monte Bello deserves a special mention. It is called the Shitty bar - I kid you not - apparently this comes from some spanish word??? But what friendly and superb service. The staff are nothing short of brilliant and the food is pretty good too (full english is 5 euro and well worth it. ) They have happy hour twice a day where beer and spirits are buy one get one free and they play the house martins song "happy hour" to kick it off, which we thought was a lovely touch.
Puerto Rico is a good resort whether you are looking for a lively or a relaxed holiday. If you are after the latter, we would recommend the Black and White Piano Bar, where we spent a few chilled evenings and also 007 bar for cheap drinks (2 pints for 3 euro)
Reasons for this place losing marks are as follows: the fridges in the apartments are nothing short of noisy - this is a problem for light sleepers in studio apartments and kept us awake or awoke us regularly. Also, Montebello was just being finished as a renovation project in this week and we were in the apartment next door to one being renovated. This meant loud, rauscous spanish builders drilling, chiseling and hammering at 8am - not ideal on a hol. This however is clearly a one off and should not deter you as the Montebello is now fully refurbed to boot. Only other downer for us relates to travelling with Thomas Cook - Monte Bello is a First Choice apartment and First Choice sublet it to Thomas Cook where applicable. As we booked on a late we had no welcome pack, no welcome meeting and the rep was invisible. That said, as seasoned travellers, this made no odds on the whole, more a slur on Thomas Cook.
Agree with other reviews that this place gets rammed with Spaniards whose children are the spawn of Satan but my advice is just to splash them back twice as hard in the pool, it soon shuts them and their raucous parents up.
Enjoy should you go to Montebello - we would return 100% if it came up again

On arriving at the apartments in the early hours we were shown to our room, by the security guard. We had been in the apartment only a few minutes when we realised it was covered in cockroaches!!! Yuk, due to all the screaming the security guard gave us some spray, told us to speak to reception in the morning and promptly left.
Well after some serious bug busting i slept wrapped in a sheet on top of the bed with the lights on!
The next day my boyfriend who doesn't like to make a fuss, said we should see what it was like that night before complaining, i reluctantly agreed. We sprayed all the door and windows, nooks and crannies before going out to dinner that evening and on our return didn't spot any so i decided not to complain.
STAFF
The hotel staff were very friendly, and i am sure they would have moved us had i asked.
We used the safe deposit box at reception for passports, tickets and money at a cost of 12 euros for the week. My boyfriend wanted the TV, so we used the TV at a cost of 3 euros a day.
The Thomas cook rep never showed up to the welcome meeting, and we waited around for an hour for her! not good!!.
The staff and the Shitty bar are great, very accommodating, lovely people. Nothing was too much trouble. Drinks resonably priced and they have two happy hours, at 4pm and 9pm.
The pool bar served food, we had snacks and they were fine, the restaurant was not open while we were there but the apartments did not have many guests so maybe that was why.
On the day before we were due to leave we still had not seen our rep, the hotel reception guy was really helpful and he called to check our pick up time for us. Our pick up time was 11pm and we were supposed to vacate the room at 12 noon, we were told there was a charge to keep the room of 25 euros, bit much for 11 hours but couldn't face not showering in the evening so we decided to pay it and kept the room till we left.
FACILILTIES
Pool clean and sunbeds in abundance!
Games room and pool table, internet access 15mins for 1 euro.
There wasn't any evening entertainment, maybe because we went in june, i would not take my children here because they would get bored.
The bar shuts at 12 midnight.
RESORT
The resort of puerto rico is very hilly, definitely not for those with mobility problems! We walked down and cabbed it back for 2 euros 50 cents.
There are two shopping centres, that have bars and restaurants. The Europa centre and the main centre. The Europa is smaller than the main and quieter. The main has bars and clubs for those wanting to stay out till 3am.
As you walk through the main centre there are people trying to get you into the restaurants and bars, this was very annoying for my boyfriend as he hates being approached! But just be firm and say no and they leave you alone.
We went Jet skiing which was fab, and went to the new waterpark in puerto rico which was also great.
Things for kids in main centre include trampolines, fun fair, mini golf and go karts.
WARNING IF YOU DON'T WANT TIMESHARE
We were approached by a guy trying to get us to visit a hotel in return for free tickets for entertainment of our choice. He said all we had to do was go to the hotel for 90mins, free taxi there and back, and just listen to a rep show us the place. No thanks mate! DON'T GO!, Its a total con, they keep you there as long as possible and try to sell you timeshare, he will say its not timeshare but it is, they will try to get you to part with the best part of a THOUSAND QUID and rope yourself in to 7 years finance totaling 10 THOUSAND QUID!
We were also approached by a girl at the beach for a similar thing, 90 mins to talk about holidays for a free laptop, told her where to stick it too.
Lovely weather, blue sky all week, great if like me you love the sun.
Puerto rico is good resort for young couples, good for chilling out, great for watersports and boat trips. Good for lively evenings.
I would recommend Montebello apartments for couples or families with teenage kids who are going to spend most evenings at either the Europa or main centre.

No need to rush out to get sunbeds they are in abundance, poolside also on the sun terrace, a heated pool, also an added bonus. Good standard of cleaning every day for 5 days we had clean towels, also beds changed twice a week.
I can’t wait to go back.

Submitted By: Mr A MartinWe are booking this hotel again for next year as we really enjoyed ourselves there. We took our 4 year old son who loved the pool and the beach. I would advise to use the taxis as the hills are steep but the taxis are very cheap and well worth it.
One thing I would warn you about is the Spanish guests, when they come they take over everything and are very loud. We only had them for our last weekend.

Submitted By: Mr A MartinThe hotel and staff were great and a great help if you needed anything. The pool bar and staff were fantastic we took our 4 year old son he loved it and the staff at the pool bar were great with him, the bar is called the SHITTY BAR its no a joke it is called that.
I would warn you about the Spanish guests they do come by the hundreds when they come and they are very noisy and rowdy. They came on our last weekend which we was told was a Spanish bank holiday they just seem to take over the pool and I had to watch them round my son as some of them can be a bit rough. Everything what the other reviews say about the Spanish guests is true, even the hotel staff do not like them.
I am going back to the Montebllo again, the place is very nice and clean the cleaners are there every day apart from Thursdays and Sundays. I would recommend this hotel to anyone we had a great time and like I said we are going back again.

Submitted By: Miss D SuttonWe arrived early hours and were shown to our rooms which were very spacious and clean. The bar staff were amazing always so nice.
The town is 10 mins walking but very hilly. Would advise a taxi, 2 euro 20 cents, saves the walk. The rooms were cleaned 4 times a week.
I would recommend to anyone, I am returning in May.

Submitted By: Miss J FranceMy story is 100% true and I am being really honest.
My partner and I took our one year old daughter on her first holiday and we were really looking forward to it. Before going we had a "situation" with our travel agent. They had messed up yet again regarding our holiday and were refusing to fix it.
When we finally arrived at the Montebello the reception was very nice and the girl was really polite etc, I explained my situation with regards to the travel agents mistake with the booking and she immediately sorted it for us.
We got our one bedroom apartment that we had paid for. She explained where everything was within the hotel etc and told us how to get to our room. Because we obviously got a different room to what the travel agent had booked for us there was no cot so I called reception and got one within five minutes which included a proper mattress and also clean bedding.
The rooms are spacious and clean with a good kitchen and you also get a complementary bottle of water. There is no air conditioning at all and it was very hot at night. We were on the 5th floor of the 9 floors. That is where the pool and the pool bar etc is, your balcony walks straight out to the pool and we couldn’t keep the door open incase our little girl ran out to the pool.
There is a laundry there that has a washer and dryer which is very handy. It costs 4 Euros to wash and 3 to dry, you pay at the reception, and they give the tokens and washing powder.
They have 2 computers to access the internet. There is also a games room, shop, and restaurant. We found it cheaper to use the phone in our hotel room during our week than to use a pay phone. The TV that you get in your room is 1 euro per hour.
I found it to be too high up and we had to get taxis back all the time. I would not recommend this hotel if you have kids and don’t really use the taxis. There is a big sun terrace for sunbathing which is along from the pool and there are also sunloungers around the pool.
One thing I would warn about is all the Spanish people that holiday there, there are millions of them, and they are noisy! We woke up one morning and found that they had tripled overnight. The kids are in the pool from morning till night and the pool is way to overcrowded so we had to use the public pool all the time.
Also on a few occasions at night time there was a group of teenagers hanging around the pool talking till way into the early hours and it was right in front of our window, I did try to complain to the night porter but he didn’t speak any English.
The following night they were out there again I asked them to move and the laughed at me this time the reception was still open as it closes at 12, they were moved straight away.
Check out is at 12pm and the have a courtesy shower room that you can use but to be honest it was horrible when we went in it, there were dirty towels piled high and empty bottles of shampoo etc lying all over the floor so we didn’t use it.
The reception did keep our bags for us till we were leaving that night. You can pay to stay longer on your check out day but we were told it would cost 30 Euros for only a few hours and we thought that was a bit much.
Over all the hotel was really nice and the girl at the desk really helped as much as she could. The only thing that ruined the holiday for us was the Spanish visitors staying there.
There were far too many of them and the pool was always overcrowded. We never got to use the pool at all. They are also very noisy all day long. So really it’s the guests that let the Montebello down not the hotel itself.

Submitted By: Miss E HILLHowever, apartments were full of Spanish, the pool was packed with them. Kids just standing piddling at poolside and kids very rude and very rough with my child, splashing and punching him under water, stealing his toys and at one point rummaging through my handbag getting stuff out it. It was very intimidating. We ended up having to stay out of apartments as much as we could, as i didn't want to end up fighting with these people. We went to a public pool each day and had to pay to get in there. They would also have fun ringing our doorbell and running away and throwing food and rubbish on our balcony.
There wasn't any entertainment in apartments at all, and not much entertainment in the resort for children, very disappointing.
I doubt i would ever return to this resort and definitely not to these apartments.
" After a full year of waiting to go on... "
Submitted By: Mr F MactavishThe rooms were not up to much, however the balcony was a decent size for sunbathing. The pool area was small but ok once you raced all the locals to get a sun lounger. The locals took over the pool, being very rude and disrespectful to other holiday makers.
The food was very reasonable around the pool and the bar staff were friendly and helpful. There was entertainment twice a week which was poor but a good laugh. Our holiday rep (Dave) was a young lad and was a great laugh; he was very helpful and made the stay at the hotel easier.
The resort itself was very nice as I have been 3 times before but I would definately not choose to stay at the Montebello apartments again.

The bar staff was the best and the food at the bar was great. We met really good friend there and mini golf was great.
I’m going back this year but going to try different apartments.
Would definitely go to Mary D's, it was a karaoke bar at the top off the hill it was really good, and you could sing your heart out good laugh and quiz games.
Tattoo shops over there was fab, made sure I came back with one.

Submitted By: Miss L MathiesonThe reception staff were helpful and spoke reasonable English. The Bar staff were very friendly.
The main centre is just a short walk down the hill, however I would advise getting a taxi back as we realised after a couple of times going back up the hill isn't quite as easy. The centre is very nice, plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. You will be hounded by staff at every restaurant, but just say that you have eaten already.
All in all a very good holiday, I would definitely return to Puerto Rico.

Submitted By: Mrs P MullinThe hotel staff weren't interested and the airtours rep was a waste of time. We ended up paying a lot of money to stay in the Morasol. Which I would recommend.
Also people in the Montebello apartments found items going missing on a regular
basis. I am actually glad we couldn’t swim in the pool because the Gypsy's used
to gawk spit in it and not once during the day did any of them go to the toilet absolutely minging.

Would definetely return.
