Nov 2007, Miss A Banks

Our holiday was a good one apart from the apartments. They need closing down to upgrade them and tidy them up. A lot of building work going on couldn’t sit round the pool in peace for the banging. Lifts not working! Not good when you’re on the 5th floor.
The 174 steps that we had been warned about getting to and from the main centre weren’t too bad to walk down not too good to walk back up like but taxis were cheap enough to jump in to get back to accommodation.
The Castillo del sol apartments were very close to the main centre which was good but if you’re going there for a quiet one on a night I wouldn’t go you can hear the night clubs and bars till about 4am .
The good thing about the apartments was the Domingo the entertainer day and night . Sorry but not the nicest place I’ve stayed. And don’t pre book your flight seats home off your rep because they take your money and don’t book your seats for you...

Loved the Castillo apartments, in a perfect location, kept clean and nice pool area. Only problem was that our cooker top was broken and kept giving us electric shocks but the problem was fixed the same day we reported it, and our rep gave us money for a meal so all was good!

After reading the reviews of this...

Oct 2007, Miss L Howarth

After reading the reviews of this hotel before my trip, I expected a basic, clean hotel with not a lot to offer but a bed to sleep in at night for myself, my boyfriend and 6 friends. Well we got a lot LESS than that...
On arriving, my boyfriend and I were greeted by a night porter who had no idea what we were saying when we explained we weren't happy about having a room on the 7th floor due to a phobia of heights... this was followed by dragging two very heavy cases up 7 flights of stairs as the elevator wasn't working due to internal maintenance and 'occasional power cuts.'
On entering our room we found no air conditioning (in a hotel in one of the hottest countries in Europe) a leaking fridge and hairs and dirt in our bed sheets.
We took an optimistic approach towards the accomodation in hope that the hotel would improve in day light... but sadly our 3 friends staying in one room had a huge power cut when using the oven and had to be evacuated from their room after the technician nearly electrocuted himself on the uncovered 'dodgy' fuse box.... They then had to take their bare essentials to another room for the night.
This room was right next to the very noisy pool bar... so sadly no sleep for them that night as the karaoke went on till well gone 1.30am. As one of our friends got into their bed she found a lump of chewing gum stuck to her bed sheet and a blood-like stain on the bottom sheet. Nice.
Our friends then were told the next morning that their original room could not be fixed so they would be moved to another room - again - where they experienced ANOTHER power cut and had dirty towels for the remaining 3 days!
My boyfriend and I had our room cleaned 3 days out of our 7 days stay and when we thought our towels had been cleaned we found they hadn't as they still had stains on or smelt damp.
When we complained the receptionist could only manage to say 'speak to manager he maybe here tomorrow.' We never once saw the manager, not once. In fact, we only ever saw 4 members of staff throughout our stay: a moody bar woman, receptionist, entertainer and night porter.
The hotel appears to have forgotten areas as on the ground floor, below reception, there is a derelict bar and restaurant area which is roped off - it's like a ghost town. This is covered in dust and has broken furniture strewn all over it. This by the way is where the washing machines are if you want to do your laundry in a film of dust and dead cockroaches.
The only good thing about our stay was the night life near by. So after a cold shower and waiting 4 years for the elevator to reach floor 7 we made it out to the great night life.
I would recommend Puerto Rico to young people who want to enjoy a buzzing night life, however I would stay well clear of this hotel. Also, be prepared for the steps into the town centre - we counted over 200 - and doing that there and back is a nightmare!
We video recorded all of the disasters including the technician nearly killing himself and our friends when tampering with the faulty fuse box and intend on showing these to our tour operator and travel agent.
I wouldn't recommend going there ever, even if it was the last place on earth.

Oct 2007, Mrs K Bennett

We have been going to Castillo de sol for approx 10 years now, the staff are very friendly and are happy to help were needed. The apartments are everything you need and the cleaners do a fabulous job and are happy to help out and clean towels provided almost every day and the beds made.
The pool bar is a good place to socialise and meet other holiday makers and the prices are very good and the portions are perfect.
The entertainment is first class, Domingo is a real character and makes it that bit special for everyone, and this is eve if you are with your family or just adults.
I love the slow pace and the hospitality.
Mogan is only a boat trip away and I advice everyone to go, it’s so peaceful and beautiful.
All in all a great place to continue to return as you know what you are getting and this is hard to find.
Thank you to Castillo de sol for supplying a great service and for becoming close friends of ours.

Just got home from Gran Canaria, love it here, best place ever. Stayed in the Castillo del Sol apartments. Had a great time.
The apartments are basic but clean. Maids came most days made our beds and cleaned the bathroom. The pool area was cleaned every day and the pool was clean but cold until the sun came over about 11am. No problem with sun beds there were plenty.
The pool bar cheap and entertainment if you want it. We went to centre 200 steps down but only about 3 Euros after midnight in taxi. This was our sixth time in Puerto Rico and still love to come and don’t want to go home!

Oct 2007, highland lass

Just came home from a week at the Castillo. Apartments are clean but our one had no hot water for the last 4 days of our stay.
Building work going on, so only one lift working and it takes ages to go up and down. Entertainment was ok if you are a child, not really my kind of thing - playing water polo each day or crazy golf in a tiny room.
The steps are 165 from the bottom and it’s a killer if you’re doing it more than once a day. A taxi is 2 euros so well worth it.
I’m sorry but don’t think I’ll be coming back and won’t be recommending it to my mates.

Sep 2007, Mrs J A Woodworth

I, my husband, and our 8 year old daughter stayed at Castillo De Sol apartments last month for 2 weeks.
We were a bit put off when we first arrived, it was the middle of the night, and when we got to our apartment the door handle was broke and we wondered what else might be!
The apartments themselves were basic but very clean. We had fresh towels and bedding every third day and the maid came 5 days out of 7 which were excellent and she was very friendly.
After the initial shock of the apartments needing modernisation and the bathroom having a "pungent" smell by late afternoon as they seemed to have a drainage problem, it was OK. The pool area was great with always plenty of sun beds to sit around. The Pool Bar was good for drinks and basic food.
They were refurbishing some of the apartments while we were there but that wasn't disruptive and they were fitting a new lift also which was needed.
The apartments are situated quite high up and we counted 165 steps to get down to the commercial centre which has everything you need, shops, bars, restaurants etc.
I wouldn't particularly recommend this part of Puerto Rico for people preferring it quiet as you could hear the discos at the commercial centre going on until 3:30am! It was obviously very hot while we were there and night time was very hot, as you couldn't keep the window open for the noise of the discos. But if you were looking for a party place you couldn't go far wrong.
There was an entertainer at the apartments, Domingo, he was great. He took the kids off a couple of afternoons for over an hour playing games and he did games for the adults also. If karaoke is your thing you would love it here as he did karaoke 4 nights a week, 9pm until 12am and there was an extension on a Friday until 12:30am.
On the whole we did have a good holiday it certainly wasn't a "holiday from hell" by any means and we caught up on some sleep in the afternoons, in between Pool competitions!

What a resort!! Please do not, not book these apartments because of comments placed. These are fab apartments, a little basic in places but well worth the money as you can't exactly expect the Ritz for a bargain holiday.
This was the third time I have been to Gran Canaria and I am going back. I would recommend it to everyone apart from the elderly due to the amount of steps. There is a large amount steps in Puerto Rico but that did not bother us and taxis are cheap enough to take you home. The Harley Davidson bar is really good especially on a Monday (Ladies night) and pica dillies next door is also a good night out!
Have fun!

Worst accommodation ever! Hotel man at reception really cheeky. Too many steps. The shower broke. Would not recommend this place to anyone, it was awful. Don’t go!!!
Pureto Rico was brilliant just not these apartments. Also too long of a drive to the airport. Reception closes at 10. Pool was clean and maids came in most days but be careful with valuable things!

Aug 2007, Ms Wendy Brannan

I and my 2 teenage children nearly 16/14 have just come back from holiday 2 days ago, we had a ball! Yes, the apartments are disappointing on first site but they are spotless, the maids came into our room every other day at least and towels was changed.
The pool bar food is very cheap/ tasty and the drinks are cheap soft/alcoholic, the happy hour is amazing buy 8 vodka red bulls get 8 free always say local vodka not Smirnoff as that is allot dearer. Netto supermarkets everywhere but I think they are dearer than home but ideal to buy basics and booze of course.
Restaurants are all reasonable some cheaper than others but the quality certainly differs ,our favourite place was called Bubbles, which is in the big centre, there’s a guy who stands outside who looks like Mr bean, we bought him a badge saying just that!
The staff and the food 10/10 not only would we go back to Puerto Rico but if I was to win lottery I would go live there and buy at least 1 of the excellent chefs from Bubbles.
There’s great bars and entertainment some cheaper than others on the top floor of the centre there’s a drag show club its a good laugh but watch your drinks they like you to settle bill at end of night but drinks are expensive, 1 cocktail, 1 bottle of Fanta, 10 euros as in venue next door pint of vodka red bull and I mean 3/4 pint of local vodka at that 2.5 euros.
So you see venue gets my thumbs up and a bar called m & ms 90 cent a pint get in there.
So Castillo is a great place as had a great holiday and met very nice people.
Puerto Rico 10/10, Castillo de sol 8/10 work is going on but it doesn’t get in the way and Domingo is a great entertainer for adults and kids.
Very friendly staff/security, nice size pool and yes there’s many English, I hate to admit, that are copying the Germans putting their towels over sun loungers early morning, its sad but funny!
164 steps yes down to centre but it didn’t put me off wanting to go into town on a red hot day, taxis can be got for 2 euros but everyone to there own hope all this helps or eases you I am honestly hard to please but the whole holiday will be remembered forever and Costello de sol played a part and I am truly glad we went there.
Bubbles food and staff miss you loads, Castillo De Sol music you played fantastic and Puerto Rico absolute sun trap, it was baking but it really was heaven.
Hoping to go back at Christmas I would stay in Castillo again but I would also look around for good deals .All in all fantastic holiday.

Aug 2007, Miss  Gemma Dearn

My family and I, age ranging from 11 to 43, have just returned from 2 weeks at the Castillo del sol. We had a brilliant holiday and the entertainment by Domingo around the pool during the day was brilliant and kept everyone entertained.
There are lots and lots and lots of steps down to the centre we counted 137 however, its not so bad on the way down but unless u r fit as a fiddle then u might as well get a taxi up the hill as its only 2 euros.
The clubs, restaurants and bars down in the centre are brilliant and they cater for all ages!! However, all the bars close at 3:30am and then it is on to the nightclub "Jokers" for a night of dancing and drinking, and this doesn’t close until around 8am in the morning!!
So all in all we did have a brilliant holiday but I would just like to warn anyone who is going to stay in the castillo del sol to not leave any kind of food on the balcony as there are many stray cats around the apartments and they seem to like coming on to the balcony and eating any left over food and then throwing it back up all over the floor. However the biggest disgust was that the cleaners did not even attempt to clean it up and instead the cats came back and eat it up!!
But apart from that and the fact that they are currently making a new lift at the hotel and the banging and drilling begins at 10am and usually doesn’t finish until 6pm the Castillo del sol is a very basic hotel but what you need when on holiday.
Lastly if you are thinking that you can share the apartment as a family of 4 then you would be mistaken as the apartment sleeps 2 and a small child on the sofa that doesn’t pull out!! We slept with 4 of us in the one apartment and it was not a comfortable experience!!
However, Puerto Rico is brilliant and I would defiantly go back there again!!

Just come back from a week with my 13 year old daughter and 17 year old son, had a fantastic time. Apartment was clean and maids cleaned most days.
Entertainment was basic but fun, Domingo the entertainer was a good laugh doing karaoke every other night and pool competitions.
Good views from balcony and shopping centre close by.
Great restaurants and bars. Lots of steps but get used to it after a few days.
Definitely go back next year!
