We've just returned from a fabby week in Puerto Rico having stayed at the Castillo Del Sol....well, our only downside to the accomodation was the bedding and towel change, it only happened once during our week. We had to ask for new towels after 4 days and on the day before we left we found clean sheets in the bottom of our wardrobe......all that aside, the staff, the Thomas Cook rep and Lorraine, the entertaiment rep were ab fab, everyone so helpful and friendly and yes the restaurant namely, Minanas just next door lives up to all previous reviews....excellent, with the owners going out there way to make sure you will definately return!
By the way, the number of steps down to the main centre are 166, we counted them twice....phew! you need to take a breather on the way up though, well it was 28 degrees!!!! in the shade!!!!
We need to highlight a couple of excursions on offer, we did the combo trip and Garbo's,(we booked through our rep) neither are cheap but they were both well worth the money. we dont want to spoil whats involved with these excursions but its safe to say, you will not be disappointed.
All in all, i celebrated my birthday during my first ever visit to Gran Canaria and i can honestly say it will not be my last visit to this friendly, entertaining island and possibly back to the Castillo Del Sol....cant wait for my afternoon game of bingo Lorraine!! lol. Ali+Ann xxx

Went to Castillo de Sol in Puerto Rico on Jan 5th 2009 for the second time in 4 months. First time was in October 2008. First time EVER alone. I am a young at hearty but mature woman and was desperate for some sunshine , my friend let me down so I went alone. I would not think twice about going alone again so anyone thinking about it believe me just do it.It was the best holiday I have had. I was on my own less than 2 hours. The staff were fantastic , the guests nice and everyone was so friendly.I was a bit nervous , 2 stars and all that but it was fine.I have stayed in the best hotels in the world and am a bit of a grumpy old woman but I can also ' slum it ' and was expecting a dump but it was but immaculately clean.Basic furnishings but what more do you need ? I booked there because it was the cheapest holiday, some quotes were 3 times the price with the single suppliment.Lorreine , the entertainments manager is a star. She gets everyone going and remembers everyones name. She makes the place, without her it would have been half the holiday it was. The hidden gem is a restaurant next door called ' MINANAS' where the food is the best I have ever had. Peter ( a jordie ) and Juan run the place and the food is cooked for you to perfection and its not expensive. Wonderful place.
I went back on Jan 5th 2009 and I was greeted by the staff like an old friend. The weather wasnt as good this time but I still had a great time. The only complaint I heard was that it was noisy on the higher floors as the music drifted up from the town until 4am.On the lower floors you could just about hear it and its not a problem. The 139 steps down are fine.Just pace yourselves going up and they are not a problem.Taxi back is 2 euros. Noticed a price increase because of the Pound dropping so prices were like here.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay here at the Castillo and can assure every one they should ignore most of the negative comments about staying here.
The Hotel pool is cleaned daily, having seen it done with my own eyes!!! Chemicals are released overnight into the pool and at around 8 AM a man physically cleans out the pool with brushes etc.
The room we had 108 was 100% spotless and completely clean when we arrived. NO COCKROACHES. The only bad point was it took three days for a maid to start to clean and tidy up our room daily. After which wet towels were replaced and beds were remade on a daily basis.
The Hotel Pool Bar was brilliant. Drinks served to order without any fuss and food/snacks freshly cooked too. Nothing was ever too much trouble for the bar staff concerned. Just what you need on holiday!!! The Hotel staff from Security guard all the way through to Receptionist and Maids were very polite and friendly too.
I always make a point of treating all Hotel staff the same way I expect to be treated back by them. Be friendly to them and they will do the same back to you!!!
The dreaded STEPS!! Yes there are alot of steps down from the Castillo into the Town but you had plenty of choices and shortcuts for your return to the Hotel!!! Steep steps, not so steep steps or even just walking up the road which the taxi used. Common sense here folks as you just took your time when climbing up the steps anyway!!!
Be wary about the Restaurant below the Castillo called Minanas. Very good reviews but I had to send back to the kitchen my raw uncooked fish. I have also heard since from other holidaymakers of having to send back uncooked food as well. Expensive to eat here so this should not be happening.
Finally I have to mention Lorraine. The Hotel Entertainments manager. She was brilliant to everyone, young or old. She is a wonderful person and you could not fail to like her. Yes she did her job well but she was like your best friend as well.
Overall, The Castillo was a good place to stay and would happily return here.

Stayed in the Castillo Del Sol Apartments for one week with my wife, had a great weeks holiday.Apartments are basic but clean, pool area kept very clean everyday, pool bar served good breakfast and snacks throughout day .All staff were very helpfull and friendly Lorraine the entertainer was brill kept everybody entertained what ever age. Just came from Puerto Rico I spent lovely week there. Everything was nice, staff very friendly, close to the beach (just a few 167 stairs) - taxi 2,5 euro.I could not find cash maschine near hotel!
One thing which I did not like was room - like space, but room looked very basic, sad colours, need definetly renovation. Oven, fridge - dirty and old. Room was stuffy, needs air condition. Beds(mattress) were very hard.
The rest was perfect, weather great - 27 C, 28 C.
Recomend for everyone :)
