Preluna Hotel and Spa Reviews
" A Fading Four Star "
Submitted By: Gaby
Big hotel, right on the sea front. Our 'superior', sea view room was roomy and very clean. However the carpet was stained and rough round the edges and the failry newly painted ceiling was only re-painted up to about 3 inches from the edges! Strange stuff hanging out of the air con. grill. Food 5 out of 10. Customer service excellent front of house, but one of two of the restaurant staff a bit surly. Evening entertainment seemed to satisfy most of the guests. We reckoned the average age of clientele to be about 70+. We are relatively 'young' being late 50's, eary 60's and found it all a bit old fashioned. Over all, 5/10

Purports to be a 4* spa hotel. In fact, it is a low-budget hotel, catering for tour groups. The only thing which is 4* is the price!! The breakfast was cheap and inferior, as per catering for mass tourism. The fruit juice is powdered and watered down and served from a machine. Tea and coffee are also served from a machine. Croissants were the type which are frozen and then baked in the oven. Everything was cheap and nasty. We gave up bothering after a few days.
The hotel needs a total makeover. Decor is 1960s/1970s and is depressing dark veneer in reception. The rooms are very basic and on a par with Travelodge, although Travelodge is more modern!! Cleanliness is not what I expect from a 4* hotel. I had to ask for our sheets to be changed after 6 days and for the room to be hoovered after 4 days. I also had gifts I had bought disappear from our room.
Our friend travelled with us and had cockroaches in her room. She asked to be moved and was told that only a room with no window was available - she was paying for a 'superior seaview' room. The receptionists accused her of being 'paranoid' and did not take her complaints seriously. She eventually got to speak to the 'food and beverage manager' (why, when she was complaining about her room?) but was dissatisfied with the response she received from the hotel.
The spa was old and out-moded and the gym attracted an additional charge. This should be free to hotel guests paying what we did. We also had to pay for a room safe (€1 per day), whic I would have expected to be included in the €154 per night room charge.
The location is on a noisy, busy street and the 'Beach Club' (lido) was across this street. The best part is the view of the sea.
All in all, not a good hotel. The Preluna caters for tour groups and the quality and service suffer accordingly. Independent travellers will pay over the odds for an inferior room, breakfast and service.

This was advertised as 4 star, it did seem to be more like a 3 star. The hotel was clean and the staff friendly.
I booked on an all inclusive basis and found that the snacks, drinks etc on the all inclusive menu only made up a small proportion of the full menus. The drinks available on all inclusive menu varied depending where you were. The skylounge didn't include coke or branded soft drinks that were available elsewhere which was rather inconvenient if you don't drink alcohol.
The advert for the hotel doesn't tell you that you have to pay for some of the hotel amenities such as; the safe, the pitch and put and the gym, which you would assume would be included with an all inclusive booking.
The food was of good quality but was rather repetative, as was the entertainment with one act on twice in the one week.
I was also rather suprised to find that the gym was chargeable even to hotel guests. This was quite a thorn in my side as my brochures hadn't mentioned it and it was the main reason for booking this hotel. I did use the spa but the surroundings and therapists weren't as good as my usual spa although they were cheaper.
even using the free indoor pool attached to the the gym would incur a small charge for the laundry of the towels.
I've been on several all inclusive holidays which I prefer as it saves a lot of hassle but I don't think the all inclusive basis is worth paying extra for as it doesn't cover that much. I would have used the gym and pitch and put but on point of principle I didn't as I refuse to pay for something that should have been included as they are advertised as part of the hotel amenities and as a guest of the hotel you would assume you would be able to make free use of them.
I would return to Malta again but not to this hotel, although if you're looking for a reasonable place to stay without many hotel amenities then this may be for you.
There were also quite a few timeshare touts trying to sell rooms in the new towers section, they aren't too pushy and usually leave you along if you make it clear you're not interested.

Preluna hotel and spa was fantastic.
10/10.
We are definately staying there again sometime.
Sliema is a wonderful town with wonderful people and i cannot fault the staff at the hotel.
The views from the hotel are amazing, the rooms are clean and the food is marvellous. Plenty of buses and different ways to get around if you want to travel. Sliema offers lots of shops and tourism. Can walk to a lot of places and offers quick access to valetta, the capital, by ferry.

A lovely hotel, not quite 4 star, but lovely.
We was lucky enough to get a seaview room (we never pay for this - just ask sweetly!) and the views were lovely. The rooms were spacious and felt light and airey. The food was also very nice and was a buffet, so the missus filled her boots.
There is a shopping complex underneath the hotel which my wife found invaluable, which my credit card did not. There are also coffee shops, bars and all sorts of eateries in the vaccinity and a geleteria (Ice-cream parlour).
There wasn't much for the kids too do, but then everything is so accessible in Malta we were never too far from the places they wanted to go to.I would avoid Popeye Village though, what a waste of money.
The hotel staff were great with us and would definately return to stay at the Preluna, 10 strides from the sea.
Sliemas designer shops are just 3 minutes away too!!

" My sister and I have just returned... "

My sister and I have just returned from a lovely four night break to Sliema, Malta. We stayed in the four stars Preluna Hotel and Spa. It was right on the coastal promenade, and five minutes’ walk away from the supermarket and shops.
We had good service from the hotel before we arrived, emailing them to see how much a taxi from the airport would be they replied that they would send us a taxi to collect us, and reminded us not to pay the driver as they would, and add it to our final bill. We also decided to take advantage of the spa, and pre-booked some treatments by email.
When we arrived at the airport after a pleasant flight with Air Malta our driver was there waiting in arrivals. He drove us the twenty minutes to the hotel offering advice on where to visit and pointing out the bus stops and best supermarket.
We checked in without a problem and found our room. For some reason it was more like a suite, with a double patio door length window that opened onto a balcony the same length. It had a double bed in an alcove and a normal sized bathroom, with proper bath. Interestingly classical music played very quietly in the bathroom at all times.
We also had a little cluster of soft chairs and a table and chairs to eat at. We also had a complementary fruit basket and bath robes.
My only quibble with the room was that the air conditioner wasn't very efficient and really needed to be left on all day and night in order to keep the room cool, although there was a ceiling fan as well that did a good job.
We went down to see reception every day about something or other, do you have a bus timetable, which bus stop for Valetta, that sort of thing and whoever was there was always helpful.
The spa part of the hotel was impressive, it had a large gym, and a nice pool with Jacuzzi. There were also Jacuzzis on the roof of the hotel with views over the whole island. I had a massage and lower body toning treatments, and they were extremely enjoyable and competitively priced compared to the UK.
I would definitely recommend a few treatments at this hotel to others.
The resort of Sliema seemed to me to be one of the best on Malta in several ways. It was a mostly coastal resort as many Maltese resorts are, and had a large selection of shops, including many British ones like BHS and Marks and Spencer’s, and a selection of Maltese gift shops and many jewellers. It was busy but not overly so, and had some lovely restaurants selling both Maltese speciality dishes (try the beef olives!) and food more familiar to the British.
It had no beach, although you could get onto the rocky shore and get into the sea down swimming pool style ladders that were every few hundred yards. The Preluna had a lido on the beach, and that was lovely, fresh seawater filled, very clean pool, and surrounding area with guards present at all times. There was also a shallow pool for young children.
We travelled around the island using the cheap (30p a ride) bus service in the old buses the Maltese use. To me they seemed to range in age from the 1950's to 1970's, but all were an experience! Valetta the capital city was very interesting, with lovely architecture and an array of shops and plazas.
We also visited the fishing village of Marsaloxx which was quaint, but apart from the pretty harbour with its coffee shops there was not much to do. We also caught a bus over to the north west of the island to go to the beach on Sunday, as being a catholic country nothing was open.
The journey took nearly an hour and cost 70p. The beach was extremely busy, although was clean and had nice sand. It was also shallow, only about 2-3ft deep in places for nearly a mile out, so pretty safe.
We visited one set of ancient ruins, the Tarxian Temples and they were amazing as many of the large stones were standing and you could identify the temple layout. I would advise visiting some of the historic elements of Malta as I felt it added strongly to the feel of the island.
We also had a harbour tour by boat around the harbours of Valetta and the north and learned a lot about the Knights Templar for they built much of Valetta.
We were able to pack a lot into our four day break with the help of the cheap and regular bus service and the helpful advice from the hotel. It was a lovely holiday and we are planning to go back to Malta again to explore the parts we missed this time.
Malta is a good place for the British as they like us over there, and speak English, so it's easy to get around, shop and order food, but it also feels very European and very much a proper holiday abroad.

" The hotel stands on the main road... "
Submitted By: Mr J Clemes
The hotel stands on the main road across the road from the sea and is on the flat, no hills anywhere near.
I suffer from a heart complaint and found Malta wonderful and flat for walking. From the Preluna I walked miles from Sliema to St Pauls bay, stopping when needed for a drink or coffee in one of the dozens of kiosks and cafes, The pub next door to the hotel serves wonderful food at very reasonable prices, the staff are very friendly. Breakfast at the Preluna was buffet style, everything was cooked fresh and the choices had to be seen to be believed.
The Maltese people love the English and were always polite and helpful. No matter where or when we went walking, during the day or late at night, we always felt safe. One thing though, the night club at the Preluna catered for the young at heart, not the young. I am just turned 60 and must have been the youngest there. All in all Malta is a wonderful place and the Preluna a very nice place to stay.

My father and I stayed here for the Malta Reunion. The hotel was fantastic, the staff were always very friendly and helpful. There was a great choice of food and plenty of it. All of the facilities were clean and well maintained. Location was good, right on the seafront and close to shops, ferry and buses.
My husband stayed here the week after I came home and he has, today, arrived for his second visit. He made the most of all the facilities in the fitness suite, all extras reasonably priced. We will be returning again and again to this wonderful hotel.

" I visited the Preluna Hotel last... "
Submitted By: Mr J Salt
I visited the Preluna Hotel last month (November) with my wife.
The hotel itself is located on a beautiful long promenade just by the sea and the Sliema shopping district is only a minute walk away. There are bus stops just next to the hotel thus making it very easy to move about.
The room and public areas are in good condition. (Probably refurbished within the last couple of years). The room was always clean and the receptionists were always helpful (even at early hours of the morning).
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the hotel staff for making this holiday one to remember. Thank You Preluna.

" When we eventually found the hotel... "
Submitted By: Mrs S Smith
When we eventually found the hotel the room was so small that there was no space to move around once we and the cases were in there. No window in room. Lifts invariably did not work.
Hotel pool and surrounding area looked like it had received no maintenance for many, many years. The hotel was up a very steep hill which was not mentioned in details available. Internet connection (chargeable) was so slow that money ran out before connections were ever made.
Had to queue at least 20 minutes for breakfast every day. Very little food available and what they had was invariably stale. Once sitting down, the tables were so close together that it was impossible to stand up without asking everyone else on the table to move. Not enough staff employed to serve food or clear tables.
Staff were friendly and helpful but very harassed.
We found Malta in general to be a great disappointment and even though we drove all around the island, it was very difficult to find anywhere to eat anything other than junk food at a reasonable price. Fruit and vegetables were very scarce, chips seeming to form the main item on the menu.
We would not return to Malta again.

We returned in Oct 2008 and were taken to a dirty, dingy, dark room with a view accross the road to the balconies of then next hotel that was always full of drunken students, so we could not use the balcony as the only English they knew was not suitable for our twelve year old daughter to hear.
Shame on the Preluna for allowing A2L to con tourists under their roof. They should have nothing further to do with this outfit, they are giving you a bad reputation.
Advice: Do not fall for the timeshare scam.
Activities: Dragon chinese restaraunt
Good for: Beach
