On reading the reviews posted on this site, I really do wonder if they are about the same hotel ! I stayed at the San Anton for two weeks in August, and although I would agree some of the facilities are basic ( but you are paying basic prices !), I found it to be a clean, and the room was more than adequate, with a fan, clean bathroom, and comfy beds. As for the food, I found it perfectly good. Plenty of choice at breakfast - cereals or cooked English breakfast, and the evening meal always had a good choice, including one local dish daily. The local fish was especially good. Its in a fairly quiet location, but the sister hotel across the road has more entertainment if you want it,with a disco underground so you dont hear it. If I had one real complaint, it would be the pool. It was quite small, and the water didnt look clean, but its only a very cheap bus ride to a beautiful beach. I would definitely go again !
Never Again

Got back yesterday after staying at the San Anton in Malta for a week. The Maltesse people are lovely and so is the country, but I am afraid not the hotel. We stayed half board but we wish we had gone self catering. We had to eat at the Santa Maria which is the sister hotel over the road and I just picked at the food as it was cold most nights and you could see the grease floating on top of the soup. There was never much choice of vegetables never ever any fruit only a fruit salad out of a tin. My son lived on batches and icecream. The rooms were dirty I dont think the floor was ever cleaned. The bathroom was horrid, scum all round the bath, we did get clean towels everyday and they did make the beds. We told our rep who by the way was very nice and was there mosts days about the bath and she told the hotel who sent someone up who just put some more sealent over the scum. Not very good. The swimming pool was clean and my husband and son went in the once but the water was very cold, but the tiles around the pool were very slippy. The last morning we were there it rained and we went for a last walk around the pool and my son must have slipped about 5 times. Some mornings you got in the lift and the floor was soaking wet and the water would be dripping from the air con. Apart from the hotel we had a good holiday and Bugibba is a great place to stay and going on one of the yellow buses is a must. We will be going back but we wont be staying at the San Anton or the Santa Maria.
nice family atmosphere

we stayed at St.Anton during the month of febuary and found it to be quite a nice place. The staff were very pleasant the entertainment was good and the indoor pool over as santa maria was nice. It was fairly quiet due to the time of the year but we all enjoyed it and would reccomend it for families.
Beware of the heat

This complex has been called st anthonys court, the stanton as well as crap. we would go to iran before stopping in this dump.It is situated in the most dire position in all of Malta G.C. The sister hotel the Santa maria, is as crap ,as is the San pawl nearby. Do yourself a favour and pay that little extra. In Malta you must. We have bought a property in Naxxar nr Mosta as we love dearly all of these lovely islands. BUGGIBBA is tacky to the extreme, it is the Malti Blackpool, but be aware of worse resorts like Paceville and st Julians.Be more aware of places like " San Anton"!
awful hotel rooms

reception ok, pool ok, food ok, rooms appalling- paint peeling off the walls, damproom, chipped flooring tiles on dirty floor, hostel type beds, furniture poor-chipboard chipped and ripped, shower has to be held above ones head while attempting to shower, balcony big enough for a cat.we eventually moved to another hotel. outside of hotel in Buggiba area there is a problem with dog excrement on pavements. on the plus side there is good sightseeing and the maltese people are lovely.
This is your worst nightmare!

On arriving at the hotel, we were aghast at its appearance. It looked like a prison block. The complex was built around the pool, so all the noise echoed around. There was noise well into the night. The room was extremely basic (1970s units painted in a horrid orange). The kitchenette left a lot to be desired with a cooker fit for the skip. There was very little hot water and the water trickled out of the taps. The rail on the verandah was broken and loose. The lifts were broken and the doors were taped up with sellotape (were like that all the week we were there). There were no reps to be seen anywhere all the time we were there. They obviously couldn't stand the place either! The sister hotel over the road was no better. Just one look was enough to know it was wise not to enter. Luckily we only did self-catering and our holiday was a cheapie, but we had the savvy to hire a car and explore all of the island including Gozo. We only used the hotel as a base. I can't imagine why people would want to spend all the holiday in this place! The other people who arrived with us, spent all their time round the pool, not even venturing out to the harbour! What a shame. Others took some excusions only to get severe food poisoning and spent all week in bed! We were lucky. We sifted out the best restaurants on the island. The food we ate was delicious, being mainly Italian influenced. The people were friendly and Gozo was lovely with empty beaches. Malta is great for a cheap and cheerful holiday, but if you expect the worst, it can only get better. You need to make the most of a bad situation. In my opinion, hire a car and explore the island but DO NOT STAY AT THE SAN ANTON APARTMENTS.
Not Enjoyed

It was crap!! The food was horrible, wasn't cooked properly, not much choice. And served cold as well. The room was too hot and didnt have an option too have air con. The bed was comfy. The balcony was dangerous because the rails weren't cemented in properly and we were 6 floors up. The tap water smelt like sewerage. If it wasn't for being with my partner to keep me "entertained" i would have left on the second day. Builders accross the road woke us up at 6am EVERYDAY.

Truly the holiday from hell! As a couple with 2 young children we booked here fully expecting all that the brochure offered. Leisure park, life size chess, draughts, skittles, games room etc. One swing and a slide, and the scruffiest and smelliest games room, packed out with unsupervised, foul mouthed unruly children, was all that was on offer. Ditto the others comments, dirty pool-couldn't see the bottom! Overcrowded, not nearly enough space to provide for size of hotel. Dirty rooms-filthy floors, bathroom and counterpanes on beds. Our room was at the front above the reception, facing the Santa Maria. Noisy, more what I'd expect 18-30 holiday to be. Balcony-filthy, knickers, food, mud and other rubbish, remained for the whole 2 weeks, even after numerous complaints. Our youngest is 2 and wants to play with her toys on the floors, (as they do) but we just couldn't let her, the dirt on our bedroom floor was that bad I actually wrote in it. The food- I have to to agree with the others, basic, poor quality ingredients and recycled from the previous days meals. Finding a clean plate was a major expedition and we either got no service at all, or they cleared our plates before we'd finished. Far from the Fine International Cuisine offered in the brochure. Launderette-same again, only one machine working for 2 weeks, used by all local hotel guests, local residents and San Anton guests!! We spent as little time as possible in the hotel, travelled all over by bus. Not the relaxing holiday we had planned or needed. We expected it to be basic, hence the 3 stars, we didn't expect it to be dirty, surely cleanliness is a must regardless of star rating. We wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone, in fact quite the opposite. We won't return there ever, and after this experience not to Malta either.

Although we didnt pay much, we were really let down with this place. Im sure it will suit some people as we were aware of some who thought the place was great. I think it is down to what you are looking for. First sight of the hotels are not bad, we stayed in the Santa Maria, sister hotel opposite. We arrived lunch time and by the time we had queued at the San Anton, only to be told we were to stay over the road, by the time we had checked in, it was 13.32. tried to go for lunch, only to be told it closed at 13.30 !! 2 minutes late after just arriving and refused lunch, BAD START. We then went to our room (We are man and wife aged 52 and 47 respectively with no kids - second marriage, although we both had kids in our first) and found it so basic. Cracked tiles in the bathroom, bath towels not big enough to dry you and ceiling fan which just circulates the hot air around the room. The food was very basic, but the chips were disgusting, the soup usually made out of the previous days main meals. The tomato soup tasted like bolognese sauce (the previous nights meal) and we had pea soup the night after fish chips and peas. I developed the "runs" on 3 separate occasions, yet I hardly ate any of the food. as others have mentioned, you are given a card which you have to produce each time, your order (food, ice cream, drinks) are then entered into the till and you then queue up. It was so frustrating when there was a queue, especially in the evening when you could wait for about 20 minutes for a drink, then only a single tiny measure if you were on shorts. Frequently, although there were 2 bar staff on, one would disappear collecting glasses etc even when it was very busy. One evening at 11.15 - 11.45 (bar closes at 12) one of the staff was removing the bottles from each ledge, wiping the bottles and ledge and returning them. All while there was a massive queue. We were drinking the white wine with lemonade and each one was different (too much or little lemonade) so one night I ordered 2 white wines and one glass of lemonade. They served me about 5 or 6 times until 11.15 when the girl on the till said i couldnt have the lemonade as it is an extra drink. I told her I had been served it all night and she said "I know, but I wanted to tell you when there was no one about" I was in a very long queue at the time. (This was in the so called Irish pub which is as Irish as Im Bosnian) I proteseted to no avail. However, at 12.00 midnight, the free bar closes and you can purchase drinks until 12.30. I went to the same girl, and asked what was the difference in price of two white wines with lemonade comapred to two white wines and a glass of lemonade. The difference 10P !!!!. I couldnt believe it. Some of the staff are rude and ignorant, which really surprised me as i have been to Malta twice before and had a fantastic time. I put it down to the way the staff are put under pressure by, I believe, English management. One another occasion, we were in the Irish pub again, we spent most late evenings in the bar as there was a juke box with Bob Marley and UB40 along with Motown which we both enjoy. We had been in Malta about 7/8 days and usually left the Irish pub about 12.50 to 1am, but on this occasion, I was about tp put a record on at 12.15 when a young lad from the bar came over and told me not to. I asked why and he said the bar closes at 12.30. I replied, "The bar closes at 12.30 but I have ben in here till 1am" He argued and said to look at the times stated in the foyer of the hotel. I told him to go away in the end as I was so frustrated but didnt want to lose my temper. He must have phoned a bar manager as one appeared within 2 minutes. I decided to have it out with the bar manager and told him we had been there for a week, spent most evenings in the pub and had been listening to the music up until 1am. He then spoke in Maltese to the young lad who was still arguing with him. He then told me to put my money in the juke box and not worry about what time the pub closed!!! There is so much misunderstanding between staff it is a joke. One of the main problems for us was the noise. No we are not fuddy duddies and know kids have to play, but this place was noisy all day and the kids were not supervised by their parents, but allowed to run riot all over the place. Not the hotels fault, but most of the regulations were never adhered to. Pool should have closed at 6pm but people still in at 7pm. Jacuzzi, no children under 12, but full of them. we used to slag off the Germans for putting thier towels on the sunbeds, WOW there must be a lot of Brits with German blood. They were down before breakfast and on one occasion someone put down 14 towels!! Other occasions someone put down 6 towels, but never even used the beds all day. SELFISH. Finally, the only place of solace was the rooftop pool (A jacuzzi!! which would fit 4 adults) with some sunbeds. Nice and quiet but miles away from the bar and when we wnet up there, they decided at 11.30am to power wash the whole area. Wonderful organisation. Due to an illness, I found it hard to get around, so we were stuck inside the hotel most times, but we went to Melliah Bay for a day by bus (only 50 Maltese pence each) and had a reasonable afternoon. In closing, Im sure it is acceptable to some people, especially those with kids, but it was just not for us. I wish we had saved the money towards Jamaica next year. Dont let this put you off Malta. It is a great place with very friendly people, but not employees of The San Anton and Santa Maria
Having just got back from an absolutely fabulous holiday in Malta. Staying at the San Anton Complex. After reading the reviews on this and other sites we were very unsure what to expect once we got there but I can honestly say we didn’t come across any problems e.g.... more
