" Having just got back from an... "

Having just got back from an absolutely fabulous holiday in Malta. Staying at the San Anton Complex. After reading the reviews on this and other sites we were very unsure what to expect once we got there but I can honestly say we didn’t come across any problems e.g. smelly, dirty, unclean rooms.

We found the hotel staff on the whole very friendly and polite. Restaurant was clean and tidy. Food was good, service was friendly and quick. We used the sister hotel for lunch on several occasions and found it to be just as good, food very nice.

We found Malta an absolute beautiful place to holiday, the people are so laid back and friendly and will definitely be returning there again.

" Arrived before noon, roasting red hot... "

Arrived before noon, roasting red hot , had to wait around for 3 hours for room. The entrance to hotel block we stayed in smelled of sewage for days on end.

When we got to our room, it was grubby, chipped tiles on the floor, ceiling fan squealing and looking about ready to fall off. The sheets were stained on the beds.

In the restaurant the food quality was up and down. Some days not to bad, some days verging on horrible.

Younger staff in the hotel surly and generally unhelpful. We complained a few days into the holiday about sewage smell in bathroom. Someone came up and left a can of air freshener! At the same time took/stole my mobile phone from a drawer! We complained to hotel management, and spoke to duty manager- complacent to say the least. Only myself, my wife and hotel staff had been in the room. He told me it could have been anyone and sent me to the local police station who just gave me a form for the insurance. The police really did not give a damn and said they would investigate and get back to me, they never did.

Just to let people know also that there is no fridge in the room , but they will happily rent you one.

I can say with hand on heart that this is the worst `hotel ` i have ever been in and would not recommend to a pig, let alone a human.

" This hotel is the dirtiest we have... "

This hotel is the dirtiest we have ever stayed at. The room was dirty on arrival and remained so for the whole of our 2 week stay. The toilet flooded and they turned the water off in our room and left us with no water for 12 hours there was no emergency maintenance or plumber!

The public areas are very shabby. Rooms don't get cleaned, the standards of hygiene are poor.

If you are already booked at this hotel - try to change it.

Avoid this hotel at all costs.

" We arrived at the San Anton at 3.30am... "

We arrived at the San Anton at 3.30am to find a reception with no air conditioning. Then on entering our room, room no 2611 we found we didn’t need a key to get into the room as a slight push would have opened the door, the balcony door wouldn’t lock either. We reported the problems with the doors straight away and we were told to report it again in the morning as there was nothing they could do at that time of night. We reported the problems again in the morning and we were told it would be fixed soon. It actually took them over 12 hours to fix the problems with the doors and then maintenance had an attitude problem.

The room was very basic it consisted of 2 queen sized beds which was like riding a big dipper (very uncomfortable), a wardrobe and a dressing table. If you wanted a kettle or a fridge you had to hire them. There was no air conditioning in the rooms just a crap ceiling fan which didn’t make much difference. The bathroom was disgusting the bottom of the toilet was brown, there was toothpaste all down the walls from other guests, and we had to clean all hair out of the bath plug hole so the water would go down and where the seal of the bath was it was covered in mould.

The maid service was crap, the maid would take your wet towels from the bathroom and fold them up and place them on the bed so you would think they were clean towels, we asked the maid why she had put the wet towels on the beds and she said I thought they were clean, we asked her not to do this again but she did. As for the cleaning of the room she did empty the bins as for anything else forget it. After the maid had been in our room on our first day the floor was just as dirty as before she had started, so we decided to go to the basement to find a sweeping brush, after we had swept through the room we had a dust pan full of rubbish, I cant tell you when the floor last seen a mop.

The food in the restaurant was a joke, the soup was powdery, you couldn’t even cut the veg with a knife, the salad was bitter, the chips were like rubber, the potatoes were always in a sauce, the worst sauce was cheese and egg, the desserts were foul and by the time they served you your drink you had finished your meal (as not much of it was edible). We found we had to eat our meals out or starve.

As for the pool it was supposed to be cleaned every day, but if you looked at the pool in the evening you could see a layer of suntan cream floating on the top, it was a white murky layer (how disgusting). The pool didn’t get cleaned for at least 6 days that we knew of. We did ask if we could move hotels and we were told the only place available was in the sister hotel the Santa Maria so we did go and have a look at the room but we decided to stay put as the Santa Maria was worse and it stunk.

As for Malta the sea fronts are pretty but all the side streets are full of rubbish and dirty nappies. We went on a day trip to Mediteraeneo Park to see the dolphin shows it was a waste of money, we arrived at 10 o'clock and we had to be out by 1.30 for the return coach, we were out by 1.20 for the coach but it never came, we had to complain to the reception that our coach hadn’t come, and we then waited an hour for them to sort transport out for us. We will not be returning to Malta.

" The San Anton was beautiful, this was... "

The San Anton was beautiful, this was our second visit to Malta and by far the best, the hotel was clean smart and respectable. The staff were as helpful as they possibly could be and the food was fantastic. We booked our holiday as allocated on arrival and were thoroughly impressed. The rooms were spacious clean and the balconies were perfect.

The sister hotel allowed us to use their indoor pool which was clean and again very respectful; although this hotel is not beachfront this allows you to see Malta for what it is a beautifully cultural country.

" This is the most appalling hotel I... "

This is the most appalling hotel I have ever stayed in and apparently it is being pulled down in October this year - why are travel companies still putting holiday makers into it?

It is a health and safety risk and it is filthy. Our first room (4605) was not cleaned for us, food was still on floor from previous occupants, floor was filthy, basin in bathroom was held up with a pebble between pedestal and basin, stained toilet seat and dirty limescale.

We were moved to a bigger room that was being cleaned as we moved into it. The floor was not washed in fact the only floor washed the whole time we were there was reception - the rest just swept. Toilets had soiled limescale; toilet seats were old and stained.

Reception toilets (record kept on door had not been completed since 11.06.07 - now mid July) smelled, bins were not emptied.

Air conditioning in reception was leaking water - bucket underneath (does this not cause legionnaires disease). Corridors had not seen water for months.

Restaurant swept not washed, glass on floor which had been broken previous day. Food awful and badly presented. Staff unhelpful and unfriendly. Toilets next to restaurant appalling.

Pool unsupervised, children diving in and running around wet area despite notices.

Fridges hired (two) did not work - no cool drinks in temperatures of 35 degrees.

My friend was bitten and when we went to the pharmacist they thought they were bed bugs and asked what hotel we were staying in. She was given antibiotic cream.

I could go on, but if anyone wants to read the 6 page letter I have sent to My travel - just contact me - I have never complained about a holiday before but I would not advise anyone to go to this hotel.

" Just back from holiday. San Anton... "

Just back from holiday. San Anton Hotel not a 3 star hotel definitely.

Alright, the room was very big with complete kitchen appliances and utensils, but the room is very very hot even though with two ceiling fans (poor building design maybe).

It’s difficult to rest after a hot walk outside. The toilet is stinking with urine. I don’t know if its properly clean.

On our first day my husband found a cockroach in our bedroom. On our last day we were waiting from the hotel lobby for our taxi and scattered everywhere are the used tissues and empty drink bottles which is not very impressive for a hotel lobby!

Malta is a lovely country with lovely and very accommodating people. every time we ask anyone of directions they would gladly help us. though when we went there it is 35-40 degree Celsius! Its best to visit the place probably April and October.

It’s best not to by 5 days ticket as there are plenty of tours available that is very very cheap and the bus fare is exceptionally cheap as well.

All in all we enjoy our holiday except the hotel did not meet our expectation.

" Please go and visit Malta it is a... "

Please go and visit Malta it is a beautiful country. However I wouldn’t recommend the San Anton hotel. I can say this hotel ruined our holiday. We were covered in flee bites from the bedding the toilets especially in the lounge area stunk of urine.

The staff apart from the restaurant manager were very unhelpful. The food was very bland we were in and out having our evening meal within 20 minutes talk about fast food!

Do not go all inclusive they are very reluctant to give you drinks and afternoon food from the pool area. There wasn’t any fresh fruit the soup looked and tasted like dish water and the desert was mainly tinned fruit salad.
We both came away very disappointed I wouldn’t give this hotel a 1star so where it got 3 from I don’t know.

" We were due to stay in the San Anton... "

We were due to stay in the San Anton hotel (assessed as a 3 star property by the Maltese tourism authority - it would not make even one star anywhere else in the world) for 1 week but thankfully got moved to another hotel in the area. However, most people who stayed there at the same time as us just cut their holiday short.

There is no proper air-conditioning in the rooms, the locks on the doors don’t work, the lifts are usually out of service, there is a power cut a few times per week in the evening, very little night entertainment, the pool is unsanitary with no shallow end, the loungers are dirty just like the rest of the hotel and the entire place stinks of cats urine due to the fact the hotel seems to be home to a number of stray cats. You will break out in rashes and get ill from the bed sheets (advice: sleep on your own towels.)

My advice, and I imagine that of everyone who has ever stayed at this "hotel" is to stay clear. Sleeping rough in a slum would be a much finer prospect than enduring the San Anton.

" All flights and transfers were... "

All flights and transfers were superb. And despite what else I have written we had a really nice time and would not hesitate to recommend Malta as a holiday destination and Chevron as an agent in the future. We will also be going back in the future.

These are a few of the points that we raised on our customer satisfaction survey.

The room we were given initially looked very clean and tidy. On the first morning after getting out of the shower I noticed that everybody’s feet were filthy I had a look at the floor and it was covered in a film of dirt and on looking under the beds they looked as if they had not been cleaned for months. The balcony floor was even worse although that could be put down to it being open to the elements. I did see staff washing the bathroom floor but the main room never improved. Also the majority of tiles on the floor of the bathroom were cracked revealing sharp edges. There was insufficient locks on the doors from inside the room just a flimsy twist no dead bolt. The lifts in the block we were staying kept getting stuck in between floors on a daily basis, and I was stuck for about 10 minutes before getting out. Other residents were quite upset when this happened to them.

The cleanliness of the tables and chairs around the pool and on the terrace was bad. We only saw a few of them washed once when they were used for a private function the others remained covered with drink and food for the duration of the holiday. The pool area was dangerous with cracked and loose tiles. Also the daily routine of a light hose down and squeegee in the morning only moved the surface dirt down the drains it did not remove the other contaminants that made the area treacherous. I personally witnessed at least 5 children and adults a day fall and bang their faces and heads after slipping on the surface. Although there were a lot of signs saying not to run I never saw anyone who was running fall over only the people who walked.

In the area between the games room and Molly Malone’s Pub is a set of tiled steps, above these steps is an air conditioning unit that was faulty. On one particular night it was leaking water on to the step below making them very slippery. With children passing through it was becoming very dangerous, I personally asked at reception twice and the bar staff once and my wife similarly over the course of an hour, if someone could clean it up we were repeatedly ignored. At least two other families also reported it within the same time scale and one guest even went to the toilet to get some tissue to clean it himself but it was too bad. My daughter happened to be the unlucky child to eventually slip and bang her head and knee badly. The head injury was just a small bump but the knee was heavily bruised and required ice and a compression bandage and 24 hours rest. I called for the duty manager who arrived quite quickly and sorted out the problem offering to call a doctor and ordering a member of the bar staff to clean up the water.

We were not alone in our concerns with I would judge 75% of the people that we spoke to being just as perturbed.

Good points would be the restaurant service. Although being peak season you never had to wait long to be seated by the very competent Maitre d. Food was very basic and aimed at the British with no traditional Maltese foods being offered. I always found the joints of meat to be tasty and well cooked but would have like something other than chips or fried potatoes to go with it. Fresh vegetables were sparse normally frozen packet variety and I never once saw fresh fruit. The overall choice on the menu was good and varied.
