" As a resident of Cyprus, it may seem... "

As a resident of Cyprus, it may seem unusual to those reading this review that I should want to book a holiday at the Pagona when I already live on this wonderful island.

Well, I can't think of a better place to spend a week totally relaxing amongst friends. I've known Stavros, Georgia, Andreas & Neofitos -not forgetting Froso and Paul (and Melanie from Sri Lanka), for a number of years now and they are the finest of people. The newest member of staff taken on last year is Darren and, hopefully, he will be returning to work with the family this year.

I have booked the Pagona for many friends over the years and in October 2004, when my eldest son was married in Cyprus, family and friends virtually took over the whole of the Pagona Apartments and what a fantastic time they had. I would whole-heartedly agree with other reviews that the apartments are well cared for and within walking distance of some very good restaurants (too many to recommend).

If you want a change from relaxing around the pool (the new one will be ready for the 2006 season), then why not hire a car to explore the villages dotted around Paphos. One firm I can definitely recommend is Akis & Maria Car Hire on Apostolou Pavlou (opp.E. & S. Supermarket). Or you can always call into the Six Bells (opp. the Annabelle Hotel) and ask Louis or Dimitri if Akis is about. He's generally in there watching the world go by !!

It is with regret that I shall be returning to live in England soon, due to the death of my husband, but one thing is for certain, I shall come back to Paphos as often as I can for very, very, long holidays in the sun. Yamas.

" Couldn't give the Pagona less than a... "

Couldn't give the Pagona less than a 10! I've stayed there for the last 3 summers with my friend, and it has never failed to satisfy us! I came across this site while booking this years holiday, of course at Pagona.

The location, the cleanliness, the rooms, the pool, the service, the owners... I can't make a complaint about anything! Even though my friend and I are quite young (19, and 18) we haven’t seen (or caused) any problems within the accommodation. The apartments cater for all ages, and even though there is a vast mixture of residents, respect is always the top priority.

I can't wait to return this year, been looking forward to it ever since i left last July! I don't recommend Helios airways though...

" We have now been to the Pagona... "

We have now been to the Pagona Apartments/Hotel for the last eight or nine years accompanied by our son, who is now 15 years of age, twice a year.

During our visits to Pagona we have always found the family, Georgia, Stavros, Andreous and Neofidus, Niki Nofi as Andrew calls him, friendly, courteous and honest.. We have observed over the many years how the family have catered with various incidents of rudeness and sensitivity with tact, skill and politeness at all times.
We have stayed in the one bedroom apartments and have had friends who have stayed in the studio apartments all of which have remarked on the high standard of cleanliness and maid service on offer.

Over the last few years we have met and keep meeting the same group of friends from various countries, getting bigger every year, who keep returning to Pagona due to the friendly family and high standard of the apartments.

On arrival at Pagona you will be met at reception by the Head Receptionist, Froso, who is excellent at her job, as are the rest of the staff.

The pool side bar/restaurant has an excellent choice of drinks and during the day has a good choice of snacks and ice creams for the smaller family members.
Over the winter period of 2005/2006 the family have made big plans for the pool and bar/restaurant area which will be upgraded to an even higher standard.

Over and above the friendly and laid back feeling of Pagona the family have a Barbecue Night which is well worth the attendance both for the food and service, beware of the fire water. This is enhanced later by the various patrons who return from there visit down town into Pathos Centre.

The location of Pagona could not be better as it is only a ten minute taxi ride from the airport, 15 CP Pounds, and a 10 min walk from the various bars and excellent restaurants. It is also only a 15 min walk from the very beautiful and tranquil harbour area which has been upgraded over the last 3 years which is worth a visit.

Although Pagona sounds as if it is in the middle of a very busy area you hear nothing of this which allows you to lay back during the day and enjoy sunbathing and a good sleep overnight.

Once you have been to Cyprus and Pagona you will return as it just has a warm and homely feeling.

Well have to go now time to enjoy another fun packed friendly day at Pagona here on Cyprus. Go on try it you know you want to, cheers............
Jill, Jim and Andrew Reid.

" I went to the Pagona a very long time... "

I went to the Pagona a very long time ago, I’m hoping to go again next year. During my 2 week stay at this fabulous hotel I found all the staff very friendly, especially the bar staff, they are never too busy to talk to anyone!

I made friends with the bar staff, and had a great holiday because of them (Marios and Neyofadus- sorry, I cant spell their names!) So, I thank you all at the Pagona and I will see you soon!

" Fantastic time, apartments very... "

Fantastic time, apartments very basic, but you really only need to sleep in them! Everything is close, bars restaurants clubs, but far enough away you cant hear them.

Brilliant for kids, good pool (which is being made bigger in winter of 2005) food on the complex is great for breakfast, and the mid-day snack. Everyone who works there is friendly (mind you there are some miserable sods in Paphos) and has time to chat. The apartments are cleaned everyday.
The only thing I don’t like about Paphos (cant say about the rest of Cyprus, but I am sure its the same) is the drivers, they are awful, too fast, block paths, they drive like idiots, when you have children you need eyes in the back of your head.
Overall, great holiday, great place, have been 3 times to Paphos and will be going back again. Pagona and staff, ***** stars, drivers 0.
" We have just arrived back from the... "

We have just arrived back from the Pagona and would recommend it to anyone who can entertain themselves in the evenings as there isn't any, except once a week a barbecue, which costs £6.50 cp per adult and you get plenty to eat, though your drinks are extra.
We stayed in a studio which was clean and spacious, I didn’t realise that they had 3 pronged plugs like us, but that was an advantage, though we did buy an adaptor for our mosquito plug for 25cents in the local electric shop as you never know if you will need it again.
We found we got more for our sterling in Cyprus than in England, just watch out for any hidden charges.
We ate out all but one night (BBQ) and found the prices very reasonable, they ranged on the set menus for either 2 or 3 courses from £4.95 upwards. Our favourite place to eat was the Manhattan. You are treated like VIP's and the service was excellent. Like anywhere you get what you pay for.
I found the cigarettes cheaper in resort than the airport and also the alcohol. Talking of alcohol, when you are out in the evenings every bar will want you to go in, most having offers on, be careful, not all drinks are in the offers , ask, we did and it saves you an unexpected bill when you are leaving the bar.
We hired a jeep independently as it was cheaper than any rep and you ask about insurances, we had a printed form with everything on, including the owners mobile number, just in case. But do look around and check out the prices, don’t be fooled into paying for a tank full of petrol, we did, an extra £25. We learnt. Petrol is £0.47 per litre !!!
Coral Bay is beautiful, but if you hire the sun loungers, they also charge you for the sun parasols at the same price.
I thought the water sports expensive not that I am energetic at all. We did the sights of the antiquities, they don’t cost much to get in, but it does get very hot, take drinks with you, and most are free on Sundays.
A note of warning. On the front, from the port right along there are English touts offering you free scratch cards, on our first day we were hounded and they were even scratching the cards for us, telling us to go to a hotel to claim our free wine. We told them we didn’t drink and left, they are timeshare touts. We were always badgered by them, my husband told them you get nothing in life for free and they left us alone. We did see one couple being hurried into a taxi, I only hope they were ok.
Other than that we had a great holiday, our studio was about 15 paces from the bar but we were not inconvenienced at all by noise, there were the usual whining kids and boisterous one’s but we were all there once and you have to tolerate them, we left our 2 teenagers at home.
I believe that if you like it at the Pagona you can book direct with them. This can be done whilst you are there, unfortunately we didn’t get round to doing this, so anyone out there with the Pagona's e-mail address I would be grateful for it.
Hope you have a good a holiday as we did.

" We have just returned from one... "

We have just returned from one week’s holiday in Cyprus. What a week it was great and we’re really tanned, so our work colleagues will be jealous.

Anyway, I am about to leave an extensive review of the Pagona Hotel Apartments.

Please note any prices stated are in Cypriot pounds and NOT pounds Sterling unless otherwise stated..

The Pagona apartments are no more than 8 minutes walk to the main strip, where you will find, bars, clubs, restaurants and shops. You will probably want to buy food or drink when you arrive at the resort. If you leave the apartments and turn left, there is a shop about two minutes walk, which I recommend. If you turn right out of the apartments there is another shop two minutes walk, I advise you stay clear as the shop it is filthy dirty, the goods have been sat on the shelves for years and the dust speaks volumes, more importantly the fruit and vegetables are mostly rotten and you are advised to purchase these goods from shops along the main front or from Paphos market.

About the Apartments:

We stayed in a studio, which consisted of two single beds, a long sofa, two bedside cabinets, dining table with three chairs, a coffee table and a patio table with chairs on the private balcony. We also had a private bathroom that had both a bath and shower. The hot water generally went cold from 7:00 pm onwards, so if you want a warm shower, you should get one early.

The kitchen included a fridge, cooker, sink and all the cutlery, crockery and pans you would be likely to need during the week. As far as I am concerned all rooms include similar facilities.

The electricity supply is the same as the UK, so no need to take adapters, if you have European mosquito adapters like we have, you can borrow a converter from the reception at no cost as long as you return.

During our one week holiday the bed sheets and towels were changed mid-week and the cleaner visited every day, bar-one to have a general tidy-up and empty the bins.

As in most holiday resorts you are not allowed to take any food or drinks down to the poolside and notices are displayed everywhere. The price of food and drink at the bar is reasonably cheap.

For your information.

Air Conditioning: £3.00 per day
TV: £2-00 per day
Safety deposit box: £5-00 per week #
Check out time is 12 noon

# please note: a safety deposit box is in the reception and not in the hotel room and every time you want to go in the safe you have to obtain a second key from the receptionist, this becomes irritating.

For those of you who are taking travellers cheques with you, you are better off taking these to the local bank in Paphos which you will come across on your travels. We changed out first cheque at reception and received only £78 CP for a £100 Sterling traveller’s cheque. We went to the local bank the following day and got £83 CP for a £100 Sterling traveller’s cheque. That’s an extra £5 CP, which works out about £6.25. Anywhere that will give you at least £81 CP is good value.

The swimming pool is a reasonable size and there are plenty of sunbeds available for all, however it appeared English visitors tediously get up early in the morning and leave towels on the sunbeds to ensure they have the exact same spot everyday, that irritates me but doesn’t bother me because we don’t spend out holiday beside the pool we like to have fun and ‘get out and about’.

The bar has a good range of local and international beers, wines and spirits and a typical variety of snacks available throughout the day. I would recommend the breakfast which costs £2, which comes with smoked bacon (I don’t like), but everything else is nice.

Restaurants, bars and clubs.

I’m not going to recommend any of the above, throughout the week; we went to different bars and restaurants every day. There is only one restaurant that we returned to twice and that was purely because it was the only restaurant alongside the sea, which overlooked the Mediterranean Sea. I can’t remember the name but you cannot miss it, it sits beside the bus stop near the harbour.

Out and About:

Aphrodite Water Park

You should take bus number 15 from the harbour, which costs £0.60, keep hold of your ticket and you can claim back your outward travel. The parks costs £15, during May you could get £2 off, I am unsure of future promotions. Please visit the website for further information http://www.aphroditewaterpark.com/. We had an excellent day at the park and would recommend a visit to anyone young or old. You are better off making your own way to the park and paying the price on the door and holiday reps will charge you extra. Its take 10 minutes on the bus.

Paphos Old Town Market

You should take bus number 11 from the harbour, which costs £0.70. The fruit and vegetable market is not as exciting as the locals make it out to be. There are about 8 stallholders all selling fruit and vegetables at different prices. An example one store was selling tomatoes at £0.45 each; we then went a bought five tomatoes from another stall at only £0.20 for all five. The stallholders are ancient and they almost grab you and try to get you to buy from them. Try to ignore them walk around the market and seek out the cheaper goods. Watch out for bad produce, check before you buy.

You will get sick of the sight of leather belts, wallets and purses by the end of your holiday in Cyprus. The shops are full of them, you will find some shops you would normally see at home, for example, Marks and Spencer, Next and a few others. Its take 20 minutes on the bus to get here.

Harbour

From the apartments the harbour is about 15-20 minutes walk, its not far and there are shops, cafes, restaurants etc along the way to keep you entertained.

Beach

If you are hoping to step out of your hotel into crystal clear waters like me you will be very disappointed. There are sandy beaches scattered across Paphos but mainly there are rocks everywhere and you have to climb down steps into the sea.

I would recommend that you walk in the opposite directions to the harbour for about twenty minutes or take bus number 15 (in the direction of the Water Park) and you will come to the old wine factory near a small cliff. Below the cliff is a sandy beach and is quite nice and has clear waters with a little floating seaweed.

Coral Bay

This is you best option, take bus number 11 from the harbour, it’s only 15 minutes journey time and costs £0.70. The beach is amazing soft, warm sand, crystal clear waters, water sports and a café to buy food, there is also many shops and fine restaurants close buy if you want to eat somewhere cosier.

Duty Free

When you arrive at Cyprus Airport there is a shop in the terminal where you collect your luggage, we visited the shop, checked out the prices but decided to wait until we arrived at the resort as we thought alcohol in particular would be cheaper, it turned out not to be. I would advise you buy duty free from here, you can find cheap alcohol and tobacco on the island but you will have to search high and low.

I will give you an idea of the costs in Sterling.

Virginia/Drum/Samson etc tobacco: £3-15 per pack
Cigarettes: Range from £20 – 25 for a pack of 200
Vodka – about £7.50 -£9.00

You can buy duty free from another shop in departures on your way back; cigarettes, tobacco etc are cheaper to buy in the resort. Some spirits are cheaper to buy in the resort where as others are cheaper at the airport. You have to take a risk, we got 4 litre bottles of Smirnoff vodka for only £27 at the airport, bargain.

This review is overwhelming I know, but I like to give a good overview of what to expect. I may have missed some things out, if there is anything specific that you would like to know please feel free to email me any questions and I will be happy to advise: gjackson1981@hotmail.com.

Enjoy you Holiday

Gavin and Philip

" We visited the Pagona Hotel apts not... "

We visited the Pagona Hotel apts not quite knowing what to expect as we had always visited another apartment before.

On arriving at the apartments we met by the owner who took our bags and showed us to our accommodation, what a surprise, although only a studio it was very spacious and clean and airy. We ventured out in the evening and were very surprised to see exactly how much there was to do close by but without having to put up with all the noise. The pool bar was great too. The apartments were owned by a Cypriot family who were absolutely wonderful.

All in all this was one of the best holidays we have every had, and would recommend this to anyone

Their email address is:

pagonaapts@avacom.net

I couldn’t agree more with the comments, we stayed at the Pagona last year and we had an excellent holiday. The apts were spotlessly clean and the staff could not have been more friendly, it is in a perfect location being peaceful and relaxing by day but with plenty of bars and restaurants within a few minutes away.

A good sign is when you speak to people staying there and find they have been there over and over again.

In our opinion the Pagona is 5 STAR...A1 +....THE BEST

Mrs Poole, hope the email address helps and who knows, maybe we will see you at the Pagona some time !!!
