We stayed in Playa Pesquero in September 2011 for 2 weeks. We found this an ideal place to relax unwind, and explore, after working hard all year. We loved the jeep safari which involved being invited into a farmers home, being shown around not only their home, but the... more

The whole place felt a bit run down, there was plenty of food but the quality was variable. Its a big complex so you may have a long walk to dinner/lobby/beach. We were a party of four and we all had tummy upsets and watch out for bitting insects use plenty of repelant. The... more

We stayed at Playa Pesquero for 2 weeks at the beginning of December 2009. We have been holidaying around europe and lately, the carribean for 25 years and we have never gone to the same hotel twice, in fact we would hardly go to the same Greek island twice. BUT WE ARE... more

We visited in Sept last year and got engaged on our 10 year anniversary! Good bits - the beaches are to die for, if you want to go sea fishing ask the guys at the beach, the lads seemed to be more successful there than the organised trips. The pools are great and can't beat... more

We have just returned from two weeks at this resort and to be honest it has everything but it is so vast you really have to do a great deal of walking and if the weather is hot, that can be hard work. We had around a ten minute walk from our room to the buffet, from the... more

5* with a few management issues ie.'water front mafia!!!'
Would we go back? Definitly with this info!!!We were there from Jan 26th to Feb 2nd-Absolutly beautiful resort! Very large, not a good idea for those with young kids who don't like a stroller. We did not go as a family, just my husband and I. There is alot of walking, didn't bother us but for some it may. Food we found was hit and miss but the buffet was always top notch. Look a little further than yesterdays meals(it is a buffet), there is always fresh fish and seafood. Some of the a la carte restaurants were very good but if you wanted an earlier reservation take a couple of dollars(you will need to tip the reservation maker). Meals did take about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, not bad if you get a 7:30pm reservation , not so great if you are at 9pm. You miss out on all the entertainment. Speaking of which, where was all the salsa music and dancing at the resort. We still couldn't find it after a week! The disco was full of 14 year olds. Maybe it was the week we were there? Our biggest problems were that we found you had to tip before you received any service try to get a catamaran after 10am, the guy in the booth(where you sign up for the equipment) has no idea that at the water front they are counting more money than we brought on vacation by that time(hence the name "waterfront mafia", yes we caved so we could ride in style whenever we wanted. I know it is just a buck but I am a firm believer in tipping if you receive good service not the other way around. It seamed we did alot of that. Another thing was the snorkelling equipment, it all leaks, and for such a large resort they only had about 30 sets for snorkelling so-bring your own stuff! Over all everything was spotless, rooms were awesome, the coffee rocked and the beach was beautiful, we really did have a great time despite the learning curve.
Crazy Canadian
Very cramped quarters on Skyservice flight as most travellers know. Smooth sailing at the Cubian airport. The bus drive to the resort was around 50 minutes. We arrived at the resort around 9:30p.m. long lines to receive your room after that long lines to bring luggage to rooms. Next morning 2 hour lineup to make restaurant reservations which most of them were already booked except for 9:30. We had bad luck with ants in our room also many rooms had problems with phone lines(ours never worked all week tired of asking them to fix it after 3 trips to the front desk good thing our rooms were not far away like many others. Many travellers that week were eatin alive by mosquitoes like I was.(never had that problem any where else and we always travelled end of Jan to mid Feb., also black or sand flies at the beach. We travelled to other places but this was our first trip to Cuba and most likely our last. Service was very slow even when you tipped we couldn't figure that out if it was due to short staff. I always loved breakfast at all the places we went to but this resort just was to heavy with the oils, bacon was never cooked enough. In general the buffet restaurants need improvement. When they say you can book 5 a la cartes do it we only booked 3 the food is better in the a la cartes. Lots of fun at the swim up bar with very friendly bartenders. The lunch restaurant is nice near the beach. We met lots of nice people and made the best of our holiday even our friends agreed that this was not a 5 star resort. We landed in Toronto Feb 9 1:00 am smooth sailing through customs. Last word we always pack more clothes then we ever use, instead pack items for the workers most of them only live on $8 u.s. a month (toilet paper is $1.50 u.s for them for 4 half rolls)There is always a shortage for children items clothes etc. Also bring your own kleenex, no clock in the room and you do need an adaptor for your curling iron. Good luck and bring the Off!
Too big and too disorganized
Good luck with finding anything consistent here. A trip to one of the resort?s restaurants that goes well one day - can be a disaster the next day.Staff are too afraid to tell you they do not know an answer to a question, so they just make something up that sounds good. An example is that the woman working at the ice cream stand did not know where the nearest washroom was. She told us to go to one that was quite far away. We later discovered there was a washroom right across from the ice cream stand in a restaurant! Sometimes the bars service Mojitos - sometimes they do not. It depends on the mood of the bartenders, whether or not they have fresh mint and if you have been tipping well.If you want good service, bring lots and lots of American one dollar bills. No matter how much you tip the maids, they will not replenish your shampoo and soap supply.Make sure to tip off the guys who hand out the snorkelling gear, or you will not likely ever get a chance to go snorkelling. The equipment will always be gone. The entertainment is good, but keep your young teen daughters away from the entertainers. We were disgusted to see two 12 year old English girls brought up on stage to play a sexual adult game of twister in front of hundreds of people. Where were their parents! and why were they dressed comparible to Christina Aguellera and sitting by themselves. Very sad!
TOP BANANA!!!
I had the pleaseure of going to playa pesquero summer 2003 and enjoyed it so much so that i am going back there this summer 2004, it really is a 5* holtel!! There were that many restaurants that i didnt even get to eat in them all, the beer garden restaurant is ideal for ordering room service from late at night! I recomend trying all the al la carte restaurants, however u will get bitten to death in the mexican as the mosquitoes arE rife in that area of the hotel unfortunately. The service provided by all staff is superb, bearing in mind they only earn ?20 a month for all the hard work they do, tip them the odd dollar when u can, the smiles on their faces is worth it!! Entertainment in the night is brilliant if your going for one week, slightly boring if its two as its the same routine repeated, however there is always so much effort put into performances and you can often see them practising until early hours! Its advisable to take more lotion than u think as its quite expensive in the shop, also u can buy crisps, sweets etc although they seem a tad pricey, however cigarettes are super cheap being only 50p for a pack of 20!!! Great if you want to smoke your self silly! The beach is also fantastic, along with sll the watersports available, if you fancy seeing a bit of cuba then rent a scooter for ?8 an hour its great fun. All in all a wicked holiday, definitely worth the money, take a visit to the beauty salon too!!! Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
we were treated like royalty
It was truly a five-star resort. We had a wonderful time. Everything was beautiful. The beach was lovely. The drinks and food were great. We would highly recommend this vacation spot. We have no complaints. I'm glad we decided to come here.
Simply Amazing
This was my family's first major vacation all together and we were looking for a place to relax with lots of sun. We are a family with young kids so this review is only useful for other similar families. The flight was delayed and from talking to other people (guests, cabbies, etc.) it seems that this is common. Its also a good idea to pay the little extra and get reserved seats. Otherwise you will need to be at the airport 3hrs ahead of time if you want to sit together. The plane has cramped seating and they skyservice service crew nickel and dime you for everything. There is a meal provided though. Its a good idea to bring along something for the kids to snack on on top of the meal. The ride to the hotel is around 45mins and is very comfortable. There is more room on the bus than on the plane. When we got to the hotel everything was orderly. Everyone lined up and waited their turn. I found the front desk staff very helpful and curtious. The room was excellent and I can't say enough about the cleaning staff. While it is true that you do get better service if you tip, the service before you even hand out the tip was amazing. Everyone was so friendly and everythough some of them didn't understand a lot of english they tried very hard to ensure that you got everything that you wanted/needed. There were times when we got to our room after the maid had cleaned that there were some towels missing but that was because she ran out. She promptly returned later and stocked us up without us needing to ask anyone for the towels. Just a little tip if you want your mini-bar filled to the point of not closing it with beer, water or coke....leave a tip in the mini-bar with a note of what you want. The mini-bar is stocked by separate staff. Speaking of tips, we only tipped when we received good service and did not tip to get good service. We were never disappointed. There are some areas of the buffet rooms (and they are extremely large) that provided better service but it was not because of the staff but rather a result of how the staff was assigned areas. (some areas were larger than others) The food was the same at the buffet tables day over day but there was enough variety for us. Most people has different opinions on this both positive and negative. We decided before going that we would not take advantage of the A La Cartes but we heard both positive and negatives things about them. The grounds are extremely well maintained and the large grounds allow for a large number of guests without crowding. With little kids its a good idea to bring a stroller. Expect to walk a lot. There are also a large amount of "taxi" drivers on golf carts that are more than willing to give anyone a lift to where ever you want to go. There were plenty of chairs at the pool and the beach and we were never disappointed. The pool was amazing with lots of various depths for kids and adults to swim. The most amazing thing was just the fact that with all of the Canadians down there all having a great time together (which by the way is truly incredible because all of the guests were so friendly) the staff (all of them) were so appreciative to have their jobs because of the proverty they would do an exceptional job to make everyone happy despite some of them living over 4hrs away, not seeing their children for an entire week while working, and/or having to work even if their kids are sick at home while having to put on a happy face for the guests. Bottom line for us is that we had a great time and would go back next year. As the kids get older and our focus changes there is still plenty to do at this hotel. We were never so relaxed on a vacation with the kids. The only complaint that I had was actually the guests. Some would "reserve" lounge chairs by putting items on them first thing and walk away and never use them. Also, even though our group was nicely lined up at check-in time, a group of guests arriving later that week from Paris were embarrasing to watch. They pushed and shoved their way around the reception desk practically demanding to be looked after. We also saw one group of kids who were causing trouble with the shows and the kids disco but to me that is not something that the staff should have to deal with. The parents obviously didn't care to displine their children and ruined it for others. Fortunately they were only around for a day while we were there.
Christmas 2003 - An Incredible Family Holiday
This was our first BIG family trip. What can I say? It was absolutely amazing. Would I go back? In a heartbeat! The first night we got there, there was a tropical storm. I though to myself, what have we gotten ourselves into. The lobby had about 6 inches or more of rain on the floor. They had the fire department there pumping out the water. We finally got checked in and into our rooms at 1:45 am. The rooms were beautiful. My husband and I had a king size bed and the kids has 3 twin beds. Betty always kept our rooms clean and spotless. We always had fresh towels (the need to use fabric softener they were a bit hard), clean floors I have no complaints about the room. The air conditioning worked really well, a little too well. Don t leave you re A/C on all night or you ll freeze. The mini bar was stocked and we had Sat. T.V. The next morning was beautiful. You would never have known there was a tropical storm the night before. The grounds were breath taking. The pool was Amazing, I have never seen a more beautiful pool it was gigantic. They also had a sports pool. Were we played the Pesquero games at 12:30 and 4PM. They were sooo much fun. Elizabeth, Fernando, Ronaldo & Roberto were excellent staff and spoke excellent English. The beach was nice, the sand had a lot of shells but it wasn't too bad. You just had to watch were you were walking or make sure you had sandals on. The food was good, we ate at the buffet restaurant most nights as I love seafood. The pizza was also really good at the Italian restaurant and my boys loved the Pesquero burger at the Beer garden for a late night snack. There are lots of restaurants to choose from, there is always something for everyone. The drinks were good all brand name booze. There popular beer was Crystal. It tastes better from the bottle than draft. If you go you need to try Sex at the Bar or Sex at the beach. Don t forget to Tip. It definitely goes a long way. We bought a whole bunch of gifts for everyone we had baseball caps to give out. The gardeners were thrilled when we gave them a hat as they hardly receive presents.u
tremendous value
Jan 25- Feb 1 Tremendous Value. After travelling over the years down south we found Pesquero great value for your money. Resorts in the Bahamas,St Martin, Aruba , Barbados and other ares cost about twice as much as this resort. We found the rooms excellent, service great, the food good, the pool and beach beautiful .The local people have a beautiful spirit about them even though they have difficulities to conquer.I found the diverse group of people from around the world made the place very enjoyable. the leading indicator of any resort is the question would we return, the answer is yes. PlayaPesquero- It's hard not to like
Just returned from Playa Pesquero on January 30 and its hard not too like this place. Food was excellent and lots of selection, staff were very friendly and tried hard to please you. Day time weather very hot with cooler evenings. Lots of tours you can go on and plenty of things to see. If you want Cuban cigars there is a cigar shop in the lobby however seletion is limited. P.S. be very careful where you by from as there are lots of counterfit cigars sold under ground. This place is not quite 5 star but is very close. My only compliant would be that the service is somewhat slow and the room could have been a little bit cleaner. Would I go back? Anyday.
Loved It!!!
We absolutely loved this resort. The food was excellent as far as we're concerned, it could have been kept warmer though. The restaurants do book up quickly and can take a while, but we just ate at the buffet and were completely satisfied. There are several places to have lunch, from pizza to chicken and fries, to burgers and hot dogs, pasta, the list goes on and on. The pool is amazing, the resort beautiful, the rooms and bathroom spacious and clean. The staff is gracious and most do speak english well enough, especially the bartenders, who are skilled and generous! Tipping does go a long way, although we never had to wait long for a drink and didn't flash money around to get one. A buck or two here and there is greatly appreciated, and we tip at home so why not there? The shows at night are entertaining, and the dancers are accompanied by a live band and singers most nights. The beach is huge and beautiful, and the water awesome. All in all a great place, and we would absolutely recommend this resort to anyone.
