As a family of 5 (3 Children under 10) we visit france every year and camp, We stayed at Le Clarys Plage for the last 2 weeks of the school summer holidays in August 2011. The journey from Roscoff to Le Clarys Plage took around 4.5 hours. The directions on line arnt great so if you can get a sat nat then that will help. The directions the site give you upon booking will help but just for a little town called Orouet.
We arrived on site and checked in at reception the first impressions of the site was it was huge and rather untidy, shabby looking. We were shown to our pitch and were dissapointed to see it had no grass on it, it was a dust bowl. The pitch was flat but was just sand and mud, not great for comfort or cleanliness, Theres a tap and wash area thats shared with next doors pitch which is good, but annoyingly the electric hook-up is shared between 6 - 8 Pitches and required us to have a 20 metre lead! Also the lead connectors are French style 2 pin not 3 pin, which is also annoying but you can higher from reception for 30 euros deposit.
The site has over 400 pitches and was the biggest site we ever stayed on, theres not many tent pitches available roughly 10 and there all the same at this time of year.
The swimming pool is great but very small considering the size of the site, it opens at 10.30am each morning which is quite late when youve got young children, who are dying to get in the pool. The pools are warm, its lifeguarded and has 9 slides, a lazy river, 2 jacuzzi's a water play area and two small toddler pools. One indoor small pool and jacuzzi. The pool cleanliness was excellent but theres only one toilet within the pool complex. Theres a fast food bar offering good food at a reasonable price which overlooks the pool next door to the bar and entertainment area which is tiny.
Theres entertainment every night but its late, cramped and loud! your usual disco's, magician and clown shows but there always on too late. 9pm roughly.
The supermaket next door is a good 5 mins from the site but expensive, for your main essential shop theres another larger supermarket only 15 mins away in car for cheaper, better selection.
Also the beach is around 10 - 15 mins, the beach is clean, and massive, its lifeguarded and has toilets and food / snacks available
Theres not a huge amount to do outside the campsite so you will have to travel to the near by towns to find better shops, bakeries, pubs and activities.
Overall its a large site which its average rating, there is better and im sure theres definately worse.

La Clarys Plage is Brilliant

This is the fourth time we have been on holiday in Le Clarys Plage and probably the best. Our children are now aged 9 and almost 8 which meant they could totally appreciate what was on offer and also get a lot of freedom to go round the campsite on their bikes as it is very safe. The only complaint really is the fact that you are charged 8 EUROS for an hour on the tennis court and the cost of soft drinks in the bar are typically expensive. We just arrived home a few days ago and will be returning next year without a doubt. Well worth the journey from Scotland!

We had a different holiday than usual...

We had a different holiday than usual to Clarys Plage in July. It was different from our previous holidays and we thought it would be fun to try a caravan holiday. We booked with Thomson Al Fresco and the caravan on arrival was clean and fully equipped. We could not fault the caravan it had plenty of storage and a great shower. We also really liked the decking area where we coud sit out with a glass of wine in the evenings.
We have a 3 year old son and we found there was limited things to do to keep him occupied apart from the pool and play park, but there is only so much time you can spend there. The kids clubs are for 4 year olds and over. Our son loved the pool and also the local beach which was lovely and sandy.
We were disappointed with the local restaurants as food was not the best and the staff in the restaurants could be rude. In the end, we ate in most of the time. We thought it would be too far to travel to find a decent French restaurant. We expected to find some fine french cuisine restaurants nearby but unfortuantely none in that part of France.
The weather was not the best ( which we thought unusual for July) and we had 3 or 4 days of rain which was really awful as you need good weather to make it enjoyable there. We took some car trips on the rainy days but as so wet and miserable it was hard to enjoy and enjoy the local scenery.
We were quite disappointed with this part of France and we will not return. We will stick to South of France, Italy, Spain or Greece in future and not in another campsite. I can't see the attraction of that type of holiday.

This was our first time in Le Clarys Plage and loved it !! It was really clean no matter what time of day or night , the staff there were pretty friendly and allow you to bring your own drinks and snacks for kids in the bar for the evening entertainment, which was great, as the drinks were priced similar to here. The pool area is excellent and really safe as there is a gate at the entrance so wandering toddlers cant escape. Overall had a great, relaxing time due to the parc being so family orientated it felt really safe , I would definately go back and would reccommend it highly.

Excellent.
First time in France and will not be the last. We booked the tent options as we have always enjoyed camping in this country. The tents are spacious superbly equipped and everything you could need.
The park is a good size with good facilities, very clean toilets and showers and a good bar area for the evenings and plenty of entertainment (aimed mostly at children). The pool is good with several slides to keep the kids occupied.
The surrounding area is beautiful, the local beach is sandy and clean but we preferred the nearby one in the main town.
I would highly recommend both this type of holiday and this location and we will definitely be going back in the very near future.

We visited Le Clarys Plage in September 2006. After visiting the south of France every year we thought that a change may not live up to our expectations. How wrong we were.
This park was beautifully clean and the kids absolutely had a great time. The beach is within walking distance as is a selection of small shops and restaurants. If you are used to having French Gourmet meals then these are not for you however the meals are of good standard and of reasonable price. The take away has a limited menu bit also of good quality.
What can I say about the pools, great even after spending 6 hours a day non stop in them they were great fun and even had my 70 + year old parents going down the water slides. There is a children’s playground next to the pool which both my 4 and 9 year old girls loved and even though the kids clubs had closed for the season there was never a dull moment and they were entertained non stop.
There is also a supermarket within 100 metres which was very reasonably priced. We loved it so much that there are 7 of us making a return visit next year. We didn’t venture very far however St Jean de Monts is enchanting to visit as is the other towns in the area

This was our first time, trying to drive through France. Our party consisted of us, mum and dad and two kids aged 5 years and 10 months.
We went via Euro tunnel to Calais and then drove down to St Jean de Monts.
Eurotunnel was fantastic! Very smoothly run. Even at 5am.
The roads in France are great. The motorways are mostly like our dual carriageways but empty. We very easily got used to driving on the right, signposts were easy to follow. Warning that a lot of the motorways are toll roads, the euros can mount up. The service station toilets are horrible. Avoid!
It took us 8 driving hours from Calais to the campsite including stops.
The Renoir caravan we stayed in was ok. Not the luxury we would have liked after such a long journey and needed cleaning before I could let my 10 month old lose. Felt like we had been sent back in time 20-30 years. We had no TV, no mobile phone signal and the CD player in the caravan didn't work. Silence!
Our first reaction looking round the resort, was that it was a lot smaller than the brochure pictures made it look. The pool seemed tiny and there was only a bar, not a club!
Just to top things off the heavens opened and it poured with rain. Our first impressions were, my god, what have we done.
Eventually, the next day the sun came out and we went to the pool. Though initially we thought the pool was small, this turned out to our advantage. Our 5 year old, who can nearly swim, could go anywhere she wanted and we could still keep our eye on her. The pool was spotless and the lifeguard was always nice and helpful. The toilets in the pool complex were disgusting but the main block were ok.
The bar area was very small and nothing like the Haven holidays in the UK. The entertainment is having a bucking bronco crammed into a small room or a clown wandering around. We didn't hang around for long, though lots of kids and parents seemed to start the evening off there. Our daughter met some friends.
The surrounding area was ok. Lots of Pizza restaurants and a supermarket just round the corner. There was a large fun fair (Beau Park) when we were there. Beaches looked nice, though we didn't go on them because our daughter LOVED the pool. We travelled around quite a bit and our favourite 'pretty' place was St Gilles. The French don't quite know the meaning of 'fast food' yet, the couple of times we went to McDonalds it took about 45 minutes to be served, including the drive-through.
Overall, what started off as a potential disaster became a very nice relaxing holiday. It made a change not to sit in front of the TV or have your phone to your ear all the while.
If you don't get nice weather, the holiday would be awful. Personally, we wouldn't stay in another caravan.

A long drive as you’d expect - we travelled from Caen on the fast craft and the journey through France took about 6 hours as we got lost after following the directions on the Eurocamp leaflet. On arrival, several other campers also found the directions were wrong, but never mind...
Nice clean park, lovely pool and slides kept older children entertained for several hours a day. We took children aged 2 -13, but found very little for the 2 year old to do except a single play area. Leo’s club only open to over four year olds, and my little one was desperate to see Leo but found that there was very little reference to the site mascot anywhere except for in the brochure. Also, club for younger children had stopped running. Other campers with slightly older children enjoyed packing their children off to the club in the morning and afternoon, which the children genuinely loved.
Entertainment took place in a tiny bar with very expensive drinks. Not really worth bothering with and so the children were a little disappointed with this.
The highlight of the site was the pool - there is very little else to do there! All the other families really enjoyed it, but I ended up booking a week in a UK Haven park on our return so the kids could have an entertaining break, as I felt that they were disappointed with this park.
Surrounding area gorgeous, large supermarket just round the corner, stunning beaches - definitely a relaxing site for adults but be prepared to entertain yourselves.
