My husband and I went to hotel Fuga...
9 / 10
Jun 2005, Mrs N Murray

My husband and I went to hotel Fuga in Gumbet the 2nd week of June 2005, and we loved it. The day before we were due to leave we read the review of Mrs Thompson on this website, and we of course were very worried about our own holiday.
However, Fuga was nothing like the review indicated. The rooms were on the smallish side, but were still comfortable and were nicely decorated. The cleaning staff were brilliant, they added little different touches every day they came in (eg little flowers on the bed).
The food was magnificent, the hot food was very varied during the week, and the desserts were out of this world. The waiters in the dining room were incredibly nice, they were very helpful, always poring water and making sure you were comfortable.
The views from the hotel were spectacular. You really couldn’t wish for anything better. There were plenty of sunbeds, mattresses and pillows around, however if you wanted the good spots you had to get up early!
The only criticism that I can agree on is the bar staff. They were very slow in serving you drinks, and it is very annoying not to know whether you need your card swiped or not. However, after a couple of days when they got to know you, they were very friendly and chatty.
The music in the bar was quite loud on certain nights, but the place is quite big, so if you got some chairs out and moved away from the loudspeakers, it was fine.
I also want to say that First Choice was really well organised, we had no problems getting to the resort and back to the airport, the rep in the hotel was very friendly and very accessible. The flight crew were really funny and organised little quizzes to pass the time.
Overall I would say that this was a brilliant holiday, and we would have loved to have stayed there longer.

May 2005, Ragirl

I am afraid I have to agree with the first reviewer here, if you still have a choice about whether to go to this hotel or not, I suggest you book somewhere else, as you will not get the service or facilities that the brochure promises. We went to the hotel for the first two weeks of May 2005.
We did not find the standard of the hotel to be to our satisfaction, based on the information provided on our tour operator’s (First Choice) website/brochure.
The hotel is advertised as being a four star plus resort, and whilst this may have been the case in summer 2004, it is certainly no longer following the change of management which we were informed happened during the winter Season of 2004/05.
There are several facilities advertised in the brochure that were not available during our visit:
-No Internet facilities
-No archery
-No volleyball
-No mini-football
-Billiards table was broken
-No Hairdressers
-No Card Room
- Children’s “Mini Fuga” was still under construction
-No entertainment, only music blaring out of a stereo system at the one open bar each evening.
-No live music
-No theme nights
-No pool/beach party
-Only one a la Carte restaurant was open, the second, Fuga Marine, does not open until 14th June, and according to the Guest Relations Manager at the Fuga, closes on the 5th September. This means that it will not be open for half the season the hotel is open.
-There was only one bar open in the entire hotel, despite the fact the hotel was at maximum guest capacity according to the Guest Relations Manager
-No boutique
Now, if the hotel has now addressed some of these items, then you may find that your opinion of the hotel is different to mine. When we confronted the “Guest Relations Manager” (who needs to learn a few things about guest relations!), he would just say, “yes that is a problem” or “that will be open at the end of May when I am organising this big party with celebrities coming darling.....”. That would have been great if I was going to still be on holiday at that time!
Further to many of the advertised facilities not being available, the complex also had considerable steps everywhere, no mention of which is made in our brochure. We are a young healthy couple, and even we found it tiring walking around the complex, I imagine this would be a serious issue for older guests.
There was building and landscaping going on around the complex, again, no mention of which was made before we departed for our holiday.
If you have been sold this hotel as being Adult Focused as we were, be warned that all of the other Holiday Companies at the Fuga (25 of them) sell it as family orientated. This was very infuriating at the restaurant, as we often had to wait a considerable amount of time for a table, due to the large family parties visiting awaiting large tables (the largest group we waited behind was a family of 17!).
The overall appearance of the complex is also sub-standard for a four star plus property, the construction being very cheap using low quality wood, white washed concrete etc.
The first room we were placed in was a twin room, despite the fact we had specifically booked a double.
We also smelt a musty smell in the room. It became apparent as the week went on that this was due to damp, as a large wet stain appeared on the inside wall. We spent several hours trying to explain to the hotel that our problem with the room was the damp, but they were unable to understand us, despite our instance that they came at looked at the damp, they would not do so. It was only when we enlisted the help of our rep that we managed to get a room change. However, we had to wait two days until the hotel could move us, as this was when the first room was available for us to move to.
Both rooms were again sub-standard for a four star plus hotel. The maintenance of the room had simply been neglected as we found;
-Exposed wires in the wall
-Exposed terminals on light bulbs (220 Volts)
-Broken key slot in which you were supposed to place your room key to activate the electricity
-Several holes in the duvet where foam was leaking out
-Air-conditioning did not work, which was an issue in the daytime as it was over 30 degrees centigrade outside
-The toilet flusher was broken
-The TV reception was poor, and there was only one English Channel which was BBC World
-There were no ceiling lights, only one light either side of the bed
-There were ants all over the room
Please watch your children very carefully, as there are a number of dangers in the rooms as they currently stand.
The food in the international restaurant was left out in the open for the entire time the restaurant was open for each mealtime. This was an issue due to the fact that birds were flying around the restaurant and landing on the food frequently. I saw members of the Fuga staff had noticed this, but they never made any effort to chase the birds away, and worse still, did not remove the food they had seen the birds land on. It was left out for other guests to consume.
On several occasions, we tried to eat the poultry, but it was red in the middle, indicating it had not been cooked properly. Again, this was pointed out to the Fuga staff, but they did not seem to understand out problem. You can understand our concern when we spoke to an elderly English couple who had contracted gastroenteritis during their stay at the Fuga.
The staff in the restaurant were obviously untrained. They would take your plate away from you, even if you still had a mouthful of food, and may not have yet finished eating. The drinks were self-service, which I think is poor service for a four star plus hotel and it was a real issue getting to the drinks area, as the restaurant was very crowded, being that it has a capacity of 140, and there were 500 guests in the hotel. The hotel had no rotation system for food sittings, it was turn up when you felt like it.
The waiters also failed to enforce the dress code, with people turning up to eat in bikini’s, topless men etc.
The food was very repetitive, particularly with the desserts, which were always the same. There were only the local traditional cakes soaked in syrup on offer, not even any ice cream. There was an ice cream shop opened in the complex towards the end of our second week, but at a cost of £2.50 for one scoop of ice cream! This price we felt was extortionate.
There was only one bar open during the evening our entire stay at the Fuga (two in the daytime), and this bar was outdoors. This was a problem in the first week of our stay, as it was cold in the evenings, and people had simply not bought the correct items of clothing to sit outside drinking until the early hours.
The bar was frequently only staffed by 3 or 4 people, not enough to serve 500 guests. Our Rep informed us that this was due to the hotel being understaffed, and so guests were not getting the service they had paid for.
The “local” alcoholic drinks that were advertised in the Brochure as being free consisted of Carlsberg lager, gin and vodka. All other drinks were being sold at 20 YTL a shot (about £8!). We found this excessive, as on a visit to a local supermarket, we found you could buy a litre of branded spirit for about 40 YTL. This means the hotel is charging a mark up of about 1000%!
The security at the hotel was also lax. We met a couple on their honeymoon that had had their wedding rings stolen FROM THEIR LOCKED SAFE. This made us nervous about leaving any valuables in the hotel.
We also were disturbed to hear that the hotel luggage storage for guests checking out at midday but not leaving until later had been broken into. We had to leave our luggage in this room for 12 hours on our day of departure, and again were very nervous about it.
The staff seem very untrained given the level of service expected by guests, although I do appreciate that it is hard to give a high level of service if you are working 18 hour days as some members of staff informed us.
Our maid came into our room to clean, despite the fact that the do not disturb sign was on the door and the maids can’t mop. We would come back in the evening after a daylong trip, and the floor would still be wet from the maid’s visit in the morning. The bar staff can’t pull pints and the waiters snatched your plates away.
On our last day, we had to check out of our room at midday. Unfortunately, at the same time, our all inclusive cards were taken away from us, meaning for the remaining 12 hours of our holiday we had to pay to use all of the hotels facilities. This is not acceptable when we did not arrive until 5am on the Monday 2nd May, meaning we effectively only had a 13 day holiday despite paying for 14 days.
All in all, the hotel was not at all what I expected, or indeed what I paid for!!!
However, do not be put off going to Turkey. The people are very friendly and always want to chat with you, textiles (genuine fake mind you) and herbs and spices are particularly cheap.
I can particularly recommend the trips to Ephesus (if you like historical sites) and the Dalyan Mud Baths as my husband and I had a fantastic time at both. The guides are also very well trained, speaking excellent English and being very enthusiastic about their country.

I like Mrs Thompson was at Hotel Fuga...
1 / 10
May 2005, Miss F Richardson

I like Mrs Thompson was at Hotel Fuga in May and was extremely disappointed with the hotel also. I happen to agree with everything that was written by the two reviewers who didn’t think the hotel was up to four star standard. Perhaps as we all visited early in the season this was partly responsible for the complaints that we had but I can’t believe that there was such a turn around from when we were there.
The rooms smelt damp as stated by Mrs Thompson and we did hang clothes outside on the rails provided as I’m sure most sensible people did however as there was little ventilation in the rooms and the because of the toilet system in Turkey the rooms smelt awful.
Obviously prices for drinks must have reduced drastically as we refused to drink in the hotel outside of AI times. At the time there were two restaurants open and one bar at night.
Yes the views were stunning as some reviewers stated but being well travelled myself I did not find this hotel to be at the standard I would expect.
We had the same problem with the energy saver keys as we have used this system in the past but were used to a card that looked like a credit card rather than just a square block of plastic. Regardless of whether people have used this system before it should have been explained which it wasn’t. The system is not used in all hotels in Europe.
I do not want people to panic when they read this review but I have to agree with the previous reviewer who said that if you can still change your hotel do so.

Beware of Hotel Fuga if you are...
1 / 10
May 2005, Mrs J Thompson

Beware of Hotel Fuga if you are British, we went to Hotel Fuga last week, week beginning 22nd May and had a horrible time. This hotel is advertised as 4*+ premier by First Choice and it was nowhere near.
When we arrived at the airport we got on the bus we were told to then when we got to Gumbet/ Bodrum we stopped at a bus park and were moved onto smaller mini bus’s as apparently the big bus couldn’t get to the hotel even though we later saw big bus’s get to the hotels. The reps were of no help in the bus park and couldn’t even tell us what bus we were to get on the Turkish drivers eventually managed to help us. We put our luggage on the our bus and later saw a Turkish man taking it off we were lucky we saw it or we could have lost all our luggage.
On arrival at reception we were given "information" packs from most the information and maps were missing, we weren’t even given a key at first. We were dropped off near our room with no idea where to go, they never explained about the energy saver in the room so for two hours we had new electricity, we phoned reception but no one came to help and no advice given. Although our room was clean other people we know were given a room that hadn’t been changed over from the last occupants and the double room they requested was a twin.
After a few days the rooms smelt damp as the there was little ventilation.
The welcome meeting from the rep Nat was helpful but untrue in most parts the trip to Dalyman is not what it is supposed to be, we were told it was a 2hr trip on a bus we were actually on a bus for 4hrs going and 4 1/2hrs coming back because of diversions. The trip left at 0610 and some people actually booked an early breakfast but we were not told this was available. We spent very little time at the mud baths before moving on although our rep Sammy was excellent and did everything he could to help us. On the way back we had to stop at a carpet factory, not that we were told this at the start, there we were hassled and badgered by the people trying to sell the carpets although we were told as a co-operative factory this would not happen. We eventually got back to the hotel at 2045 and managed to get some dinner but we had not been warned that there was a chance that we wouldn’t get back in time, we were infact told that we would get back around 1900.
Not all the bars were open the Bar Fuga was not ready and neither was the Al A Carte restaurant none of which was explained to us before we book or when we arrived.
The timings for AI varied to what was advertised and beware of the cut off time at night, we went to the bar at 2345 to order the last round of drinks but didn’t get served until 2355 we got half way through the order and the bar staff told us AI was finished and we would have to pay for the drinks.
Bar staff were rude and blatantly ignored British guests choosing instead to serve Dutch/ German guests who had just walked up to the bar even if you had been standing there for 10mins. Keep your hand on your glass at all times as they take away your glasses or dinner plates before you have properly finished them. There are little waiter facilities available, only one member of staff who came to collect our glasses actually asked if we wanted another glass. To top it off they were also rude.
Out of AI the drinks were extortionate eg 140TL for a measure of Remme Martel Brandy, this equates to £60, we were paying 7TL for a cocktail in Gumbet and at the hotel we had to pay 60TL for the same one.
Snacks are not provided between 12am and 2am as advertised. Even during the day snacks were not readily available.
We wanted to take the free canoes out one day and the man at the water activities area tried to charge us for it.
Sometimes staff asked for your swipe card to get drinks other times they didn’t be careful that when they swipe your card during Ai that the receipt states that it cost nothing.
The day we left we were not due to leave until 0005 on the Mon but were kicked out our room at 1200 on the Sun they have no shower facilities (shower heads had been removed from the ones in the bar toilet)and could not give us a room extension even though we would have paid there was no room to change in either. After 12pm we were not entitled to any drinks or food not even water even though we never arrived until the Mon morn. Some people asked to extend their AI, some were told no it was not possible some were charges 10TL and others 15TL.
The "concert" is due to happen again this week for anyone that is going. We know of one couple that were sent on a trip paid for by the hotel and when they came back they found staff moving their belongings back into their room. While they had been away the taff had emptied the room of their belongings moved two other people into their room without them knowing and then tried to cover it up.
Even when the "concert" or rave as we referred to it was not on the music could be heard in our rooms and we were far away from it. The music is not suitable for chilling out usually being heavy dance blasted from all speakers. When we asked for it to be turned down it was infact turned up. We’re not an old couple me being 24 but I wanted to chill out that week and wasn’t able to.
When we complained about all of this we were told "what do you want me to do about it"
The food was good and Goz's jewellery shop in Gumbet sold nice, well priced jewellery. He didn’t hassle us as everyone else did just welcomed us then allowed us to look around he was excellent.
This hotel was no where near 4* + premier and we will go no where near it in future, we don’t think we will even go back to Turkey although we have been on several occasions before. I do not know of one English couple that were happy with Hotel Fuga the good thing about the holiday was leaving.
