If you want luxury, this is not the place for you. We had a 'back view' room for the first day but asked to be moved and were happily relocated within 2 days with no arguement or fuss. The rooms are basic but clean and as there is so much to see and do around Goa we spent... more

Awful. That's the first word that comes to my mind while giving review about this hotel. The hotel is more for foreigners and less for Indians. The hotel staff go out of their way to treat foreigners while Indians are treated shabily. No one takes notice of you nor a proper... more

We were met with a cold drink and checked in very quickly. The staff then took our cases to our room. Spacious with typical Indian solid beds (I used chair cushions under the sheets) but my husband was not bothered by hard beds. Staff were all great from manager to room... more

We booked this hotel after seeing it when we stayed at the Nizmar (opposite) last year - it looked nice and was in a very quiet road (always good to have as the traffic noise can be really bad when staying on the main road). We had a very pleasant stay and the staff were... more

What a great time we had. The staff were brilliant. They used filtered water to wash the salad and veg so you can eat and drink anything without fear of the runs! The food was delicious. Unfortunately, there is development going on at quite a rate in this area and while we... more

A small and very friendly hotel situated in a quiet area but still convenient for the beach and the town.
We ate there on several evenings and the food was delicious. I would especially recommend the seafood platter. Rooms were basic but very clean and problems were dealt with promptly.

Off the Beaten Track
We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Santa Monica Hotel. On arrival at 5.30am in the morning, we had to wake the security and reception staff up as they alleged that they did not know we were due to arrive. We were given rooms overlooking the pool so were quite pleased with that. The beds were hard and narrower than normal. The daily cleaning was not up to the usual standard in Goa. We had to request toilet rolls and our sheets to be changed as this was not done automatically. This could be due to the fact that it is now heading towards the end of the season. We did find that this hotel was slightly off the beaten track so tended to use our normal taxi drivers more. We did not hand our keys into reception after reading a previous report but this did allow us to leave our airconditioning and fans on during the day so at least the rooms were relatively cool on return from the beach. I would stay here again but as a last resort. We found that the staff were generally quiet and were more interested in watching the TV than serving drinks, etc. We did not eat in the hotel as no-one else appeared to be doing so. We had an ayurevedic body massage for 750 Rs but we were persuaded to have a head massage as well for 300 Rs even though we had declined it in the beginning. After that, they tended to hound us for facials, etc. Overall, not as good as normal but ok.
A great place!!!
We stayed at the Santan Monica for 2 weeks from Feb th 2007. When we got there we were greeted with cool drinks and had to complete the necessary paperwork before the house boys carried our bags to our room. We were allocated room 107, unfortunatly this room over looks the toilet roll factory at the back of the hotel...so our balcony was practically unuseable. We went back to reception who agreed to move us when a pool view room was available..which was 3 days later. The second room was great!!! As always the mattresses are thin and hard compared to what we have in the UK, however i did hear that some people were given a 2nd mattress. Every room has air con and also ceiling fans. The bathrooms are quite small...and ther are move of a wet room...with no real shower cubicle...infact if you sat on our toilet you could have a shower!!!! The linen and towels were changed every day and the floors were swept and mopped. Each room also has a really cheap mini bar in which is restocked every day. (soft drinks were Rps.20) There was some rumours of items going missing from other rooms...but i have to say that it didnt happen to us or our friends and we left out some valuable items and even money. The hotel has its own restuarant onsite, 'rendevous' which serve great, good quality cheap food. The bar staff are lovely too. Antony, one of the older bar staff was extremly well mannered with his 'yes madam...no madam'...bless him! There are also a tailors and a beauty therapy shops on site...they do harass you a little to go and get a massage or look at his suits but if your stern enough they will go away. I did get a manicure and it wasn't the best, im afraid to say. You can also hire, albeit illegally, a moped from the staff there. On average it costs Rps250 a day. Like i said its not legal but it happns alot..it the police stop you you say youve borrowed it from a friend and maybe given them a bribe (baksheesh!). But we hired a bike for 2 weeks with no bother and its a fab way of getting around. Other all i loved the hotel, its pool, the staff and its location (just a 15 min walk from the centre) I would go back there in a flash...and i thinks thats the best reconmendation i could give!!!! Kat
Santa Monica Hotel very disappointing
We have been going to Goa for eight years now and in our opinion this was the worst hotel that we have stayed in. Although the location was convenient the surrounding area was like a rubbish tip and the hotel, pool area and accomodation were not only shabby but not very clean either. Unfortunately our room overlooked a toilet roll factory so it was also very noisy! We did consider moving to another hotel but as the bedcloths were changed every day we managed to stick it out for three weeks. We certainly wouldn't recommend the Santa Monica.
Just OK
We stayed on the Santa Monica hotel in February 2007. Overall the accomodation like many hotels in Goa is very basic with limited facilties. The rooms are in need of redecoration although they are cleaned daily. We found the beds to be uncomfortable. The food offering is reasonable for snacks although we did not have dinner. The location is OK and is a 10minute walk from the beach. There is however quite a lot of rubbish in the vicinty which creates a bad first impression. I would advise future visitors be careful in relation to personal security. Another couple staying returned home one evening to find he night security guard in their room! A definite sign not to leave your room key at reception. We had no such problems and overall the local people are very friendly and helpful. I would reccomend the nearby Sportsmans bar as a good watering hole for any visit. In terms of accomodation the adjacent Nizmar Hotel would be a better option.
good food at the santa monica
just got back from this hotel very basic but rooms cleaned daily and clean towels food very good here and good jeweller on site staff very friendly check your money if you change at the hotel was short every time apart from that not a bad hotel location outside is very dirty with rubbish thrown everywhere
Loved every sec
Was a great base hotel, i am going back there hopefully in a few months. Everything was spot on, hotel staff are really friendly. Great Beauty parlour at good prices. Drinks and food at the hotel were priced quite cheap too. Hotel is faultless. I miss it already.

Friendly Hotel
We have just returned from two weeks at the Santa Monica. The staff are really friendly, and it is an ideal place to stay if you want to be in a quite area but close to all the action.
Santa Monica - a little gem!!
We returned from a month in Goa on Monday 3rd January. This was our forth visit to Goa and was as fantastic as usual. We aren't too fussed as regards to accomodation and as long as the room is clean we're happy. After all what kind of a sad b****** travels to a third world country and expects to live in the lap of luxury? Considering we paid just over £600 for 28 nights bed and breakfast accomodation and flight with MYTRAVEL we weren't overly optimistic but were pleasantly surprised when we arrived in downtown Calangute to discover this pretty, clean and quiet hotel. Our room had a huge balcony, gorgeous furniture, comfortable beds with crisp white cotton sheets and fluffy white bath towels and a very powerful shower. The hotel has solar power so hot water is available 24 hours a day!! The staff were fantastic, especially Krishna, our room boy, who created the most fantastic animals using bath towels and any items we had left lying around. There is a jewelry shop, tailors and beauty salon within the hotel. I visited the salon for a head massage (350 rupees) and eyebrow threading (50 rupees) and the service provided by Jennifer was superb. We used the hotel bar on several occasions as it remains open as long as you wish but never ate at the hotel or participated in any of the organised events as we prefer to mix with the lovely Goan people.
swimming in the pool
even though the pool opens at 8am be prepared for other guests to moan if you do use the pool at this time
