Nice holiday park with a lovely laid-back atmosphere
After reading the previous review I was a bit dubious about booking our trip but I decided not to take any notice of it and am sooooo pleased we didn't. We like Haven sites because we know there's a decent indoor place (pool etc) if the weather is bad and they offer a bit more than your average campsite for normally less money (on a lot of lesser sites you don't get late special offers and you pay extra for your awning) Eccles90 I feel is a racist. I know some gypsies can be a bit of a pain but even though these so called "Pikeys" had around seven kids, (that's what we counted anyway) you would never have known because they were so quiet. They were clean and tidy and polite to boot. As for the dogs - well they had 2 tiny terrier types and they didn't yap at all, in fact there was a couple with a cocker spaniel and whenever they left it alone in their van, and sometimes when they were with it too it just never shut up!!! Also the men went out to work in their transits and parked in the car park away from the touring site. They were also quiet on a night time and we never heard a peep out of the kids - we assume they were fast sleep. Now, onto the ladies toilet block. When I got there there was only loo rool in one cubicle but they next day all four had some. Only one loo had a lock on which didn't really bother me as they were never very busy and you could tell when they were occupied and the cubicles were small enough to keep the door close while you were in there. The floor was non slip lino which was good because at Havens Haggerston Castle site the shower/loo blocks floor is tiled and is always scruffy and soaking wet. The only downside to the shower blocks was that the water was only warm after 6pm on one night out of a five night stay - can't comment on the second night coz we took advantage of the showers at the pool so we didn't need to use them, on our third night they were really hot and on our fourth, they were cold again - my husband was gonna take our 2.5 yr old in with him but as it was too cold for him, he ended up having a bath in the caravan sink. My hubby said the mens block was clean and well serviced and again the only downside was the lack of hot water on a couple of nights. We'd originally booked for four nights and when we went to pay for the fifth, we complained about the water, they apologised profusley we were told it just needed adjusting and by that night it wasn't hot but it was bearable. As for the rest of the site, it's ideally located and it's a nice park. Can't believe the bus is only £1.20 and a day ticket is an unbelievable £3.00 - It's a few years since we'd been to Edinburgh and we'd forgotten just how good it is - the transport companies around the country could learn a thing or two form the public transport in Edinburgh. There was a bus every 10-15 mins from the park and it goes past the Zoo. Much easier than driving there and finding a space to park. This was our little boys first trip on the bus as both me and my hubby have cars so there's no need for us to use the expensive bus service in the North East. The pool was nice too, i'd read some reviews saying that there wasn't any changing rooms but there were several. The complex is ok too. It's a lot less commercialised than Haggerston and a lot more relaxed, we didn't get the merchandise thrown in our faces the couple of nights we ventured into the showbar. Our little one's a bit too young to bother with the funstars but they were really good at entertaining them before there was something on for the whole family - Our little one loved the group that were on on the friday night! Can't comment on the daytime activities because like I say he's too young and we were out and about exploring. I wouldn't visit the site in high season as the touring site isn't that big and I can imagine the pool and showbar gets packed but all in all we had a lovely trip and would definitley go back coz there's so much more to see and do. I'm just pleased we didn't take note of any of the negative reviews because we were expecting it to be awful and it was anything but!!!
Better staying in a farmers field
Unfortunately we had the displeasure of staying at this site from the 10th to the 14th June. Where do I start? The toilets were filthy and small and lucky if you get a lock on the door, as most are broken. I complained to reception about the standard, they said they get cleaned periodically throughout the day, well we had attempted to use them on several occasions and were always the same “FILTHY” The site was overbooked and cramped the, pitches were worn so badly that the grass is non existent in some areas and grey water disposal (not chemical) is via the drain below the drinking water, if you use the one next to the wardens van it doesn’t drain away properly and can be quite smelly on warm days. The worst thing for me was the PIKEYS on the site, 3 travelling families complete with transit vans, tribes of kids running about in nappies and of course the pikey dogs. This is by far the WORST SITE I have ever been on . Be warned and STAY AWAY!!!!
Fine but not as good as the brochure makes out
Just spent a week here. Caravan park was fine. We stayed in a Prestige carvan which was fine - clean and tidy and everything worked. Glad we paid the extra for a prestige though as we had heating in all bedrooms and we really needed it. Service by staff was very good - gas run out one tea time and was changed and working again immediately we told them. Holiday club (we used the one for 1-4 year olds) wasn't as good as described. Basically it was 2 young women handed out a bit of paper in the shape of a flag and some crayons and we took our son off to make it - no interaction from the staff at all. Swimming pool was fine, nice little splash pool for little ones. Although you have to walk through all the arcades to get to it or anything else in the complex. Park was fine but not much for little ones - more aimed at older kids. Spoke to some people who advised if you have kids to ask for a caracan away from the park area as older kids hang out there in the evening and are quite noisy. Our caravan was in a quiet area which was great for kids playing on their bikes etc. Would return but just to use as a base for stuff elsewhere. Would recommend East Links Farm if you have kids from 1 - 10ish - we spent an entire day there and it was great fun for our 2 year old.
