After reading the reviews just before we went, we were not really looking forward to our week away with the kids (5, 9 and 13) but... it was brilliant:) We had booked a week in a Superior Caravan which has a normal check-in time of 4pm. We got there at 2.30pm and went in to... more

I went to The Orchards last August and stayed on the touring field with my friend. Although it was a bit shabby the kids loved it and we had a good time. HOWEVER, I have just returned from a 4 day break and it was absolutely awful. I stayed in a Prestige caravan and to be... more

Before booking our holiday at the Orchards, my Partner and I were surprised at the largely negative reviews posted here. Nevertheless we decided to give it a go, considering it was a Sun holiday, and a cheap getaway for a few days (we booked for mid-September, after the... more

Went to The Orchards in Clacton in June 2007 with 2 adults & 4 children. Arrived at the park, picked up keys. Walked into the caravan we was given and noticed faeces on the curtains and round the toilet seat and a strong smell of urine. Unfortunatly had to clean this up as... more

For the kids but good location
First of all should let you know that we went here as part of a Sun newspaper holiday so we didnt pay over £60 for the caravan and we knew we would get a standard caravan (although we could have upgraded for the extra cost) but still we expected a basic level of cleanliness, the floor had quite obviously not been hoovered throughout and so I had to sweep it myself and it was full of dog hairs, not a good start and seeing as the previous people had to get out at the usual time of 10am and we were told our caravan, due to cleaning, would not be ready til 4pm this is ridiculous!! As a warning the standard caravan is very small at the bedroom end and anyone broad would find it hard to walk through the bedroom doors or sit on the toilet. Also the shower room was separate which is always good but if over 6 foot you may struggle to stand up in it. The Mash and Barrel is very expensive for what you get, four onion rings with a sour cream dip for over £3.50! It was empty and we wondered why, it was due to the cost and the quality of food. Shop has all you need on site although the papers run out really quickly. Fish and Chips takeaway adequate if you dont want to do much cooking. Had planned to go into the pool but it was too small and was packed when we took a look through the window one day so decided against. The beach is really close at the edge of the park so worth a walk around. Also enjoyed the pitch and putt although mind the swans! I would say this park is great for kids with lots of activites but if you want a quiet weekend away for two as we did find some place else. Park was busy all the time, kids playing outside and running up and down in caravans that echoes around surrounding area! You must visit Colchester zoo if ever in the area its fantastic for all!
Worst Holiday of my life
This site according to Haven adverts is wonderful the accommodation has various grades from Prestige down to Bronze. You get a similar impression of their sites when you watch Haven TV ads. We booked a 'Superior Plus, which was supposed to be luxurious and 'new'. The first one we were allocated was old, dirty and smelt damp, on returning to reception we were allocated another, which although it was newer, it was still dirty and we had to clean all the surfaces and crockery before we could use it. We were also told that there was no other units available. The site was uncared for, edges of roads around the site had been filled in with anything the owners could get hold of. After suffering one night (we had booked for a week) we handed the keys back informing reception that the site was disgusting and we could not stay there. On returning home we wrote to Haven who are part of Bourne Leisure Ltd. Customer service did not accept the problem and in a letter back stated that as we had 'suffered in silence' they would not accept any responsiblity and were not prepared to offer any refund. Since our experience, we have heard from a couple of families who have had similar experiences at Haven sites. We would not recommend their sites to our worst enemy.
