" The Smells of Mablethorpe "

Just a quick review, to re-iterate the other reviews on this site. I've been home for 2 hours now since getting back from Haven Golden Showers, I mean Sands! And I feel so strongly that no one else (with any sense of personal standards) should go there, that I decided to right this straight away.
Every time I clear dog poo's from the garden I will think of Golden Sands, due to the smell. Let me run you through some of the disappointments.
Trailer, Tent and Touring Camp Toilets:
The toilets (also sinks and showers) in this area are vile; they are lacking in ventilation and are practically uncleaned. I witnessed the young underpaid staff cleaning the toilets and they were just spreading bacteria and the smell around, not cleaning. The bins in this area were also vile as were the washing up area (with luke warm water) which is located next to the chemical toilet area.
Classy Campers:
The indoor gambling arcades and amusements are okay, you expect this sort of thing, but we ended up spending more than we'd have liked in this area, due to the excessive charges for other activities. I could not believe what I was seeing when I witnessed a man changing a babies’ nappy on the air hockey table, which is right in the busy corridor area, there are baby changing areas not far away (although they did also stink. The reason I'm bringing this up because someone else has written in another review that the whole place is like a council estate, I'd agree I'm sure there are some nice people there, but there seemed to be a lot of 'scum' and I’m not a posh git.
Funworks Complex:
This unventilated indoor area which is the location of bars, entertainments and 'restaurants' i use this word loosely, is a biological disaster waiting to happen. The smell is disgusting the carpet is sticky, the tables are dirty and sticky and the chairs are not clean either. As I said I'm not some kind of toff, I'm in the Army (not a officer) and travel around a fair bit, but this is possibly the worst place I’ve ever been, I wish I'd took my respirator on holiday.
Swimming Pool:
Dirty as per other reviews! in fact it didn’t seem chlorinated.
A plus note!!!!!!!
The beach opposite the site is really nice, with shallow waters which are good for the kids to play in, oh! And it’s free.
I went to a Haven campsite near La Rochelle in France when I was a kid, It was nice and we really enjoyed it, this site is a huge disappointment and I won’t be using Haven or Butlins (as they appear to be the same firm) ever again, instead I'll use the caravan and camping sites which in my limited experience have been vastly superior and cheaper.

Advice: A small blot on a nice County

Activities: None in Mablethorpe, we couldn't find any nice ones.

" very poor standards  "

we booked a short bargain break friday 19/07,09 to 22/0709 in the mablethorpe lincolnshire ,having a long drive from manchester we were hoping it would be worth while once that we arrived.on arrival at 11.00pm it was late and dark .as soon as we opened the caravan it was more than obvious that it had been smoked in at some as we began to unload we walked through to the bedrooms the carpet was soaking wet.when we got up the next morning we began to discover more and more issues as the morning went on the coooker was full of fat stains there were bits of old food that had been left under the grill and on top of the oven door.the fridge had stain marks from spilt food that had not been cleaned up .the seating and stools all aroound the caravan were very badly stained there were cardboard boxes under the seating area that had been used for a barbecue but they could not be botherd putting them in the bin .as the day went on we were very dissatisfied with the caravan we went to the reception later in the afternoon and expressed our concerns they did offer to move us but we were curious that we may have the same conditions again they gave us £20.00 in vouchers which we used for 1 meal because we refused to eat out the cooker and fridge due to the conditions .the short break we had planned was shorter than we anticipated we left th site on sunday 21/07 at 09.30 am .we have recieved a letter from the park manager appologising and blaming this on hunan error ,we have also sent a complaint to the head office and sent photos to show the poor condition the caravan was in. the head office have replied agreeing with the park manager saying that this was put down to human error.we decided to post this to make other people aware that havens company policy as advertised on there website does not excist , (book with confidence to make this the most fantastic enjoyable family holiday experience )it seems that once they have took your money you can complain but they do not back there policy up .my advice is to take your money to other holiday providers there are plenty in the uk that are willing to give you what you pay for in the first place .

" like going on holiday in a run down council estate. "

booked a long weekend online for £200 bit expensive but have stayed at another haven park and loved it.
once checked in had to carry all luggage and kids a long way as no parking outside caravan and the reason i think is the more caravans they could squeeze in the more money would make it was like being on holiday on a run down council estate. the caravan was modern but very dirty and cupboard doors were hanging off the doors.
could not see any shows that night as the showbar was standing room only try explaining to a 3 and 4 year old they cant see bradly or roary. drove 16 miles to skeggie and spent evening there.
next morning up early and down to the pool wish i had stayed in bed the changing area and toliets were filthy and the pool was that packed could not swim only stand. they opened the outdoor pool but it was a very cold day so stayed inside until noticed a pile of grit forming around the pool left really quick.
unlike butlins you have to pay for the rides so i purchased £20 of tokens as it worked out at £8 for us to go on mini coaster and same again for dodgems.
used 6 tokens for the boys to go on bouncy castle for 5 mins and a lady with 3 kids came along and her kids went on for nothing why take my money and not hers. please take note some rides you need tokens some are cash this is not prpoerly explained till after you have bought tokens.
last day sunday paid £3.50 per child to attend teddy bears picnic which was held in the showbar at 1pm, i wish i had not bothered it was planned out and most of the games were not suitable for under 5s.
whilst the kids were eating there picnic i stood up to go get a drink (£4 for a glass of wine) and stood on a sharp object which i belive to be a needle this was in an area used mostly by children. i reported it to a member of staff who honestly did not look bothered and proved this by dropping it back on floor and walking off. i found it and handed it to the manager. i have been back 3 weeks and still no one has advised me on what to do luckily i went to the doctors at home who sent me straight to the hospital for a blood test.
we left early on sunday evening so all in all a complete waste of money i dont know what they spend their profits on but it isnt cleaning.
AVOID

Advice: dont bother

Activities: far away as possible

" expensive and dirty place "

hi i have just recently came back off my holidays at the golden sands haven resort at mablethrope lincolnshire. and i was discusted at the caravan and the bar at night time.
when we first got into the caravan it looked nice when we went to make the childrens bedroom the pillows was covered in blood no mirrors in bath room nor our bedroom my partner was constantly cutting his face while shaving. when went to complain about this there never seemed to be a customer services person on duty. the food was expensive for example i brought 3 plates of chips (and they came back in like little hotpot dishes) 5 sausages and six slices off bread it came to 15.60 i couldnt believe it.
the bar were we went into with the children to watch the entertainment was discusting your shoes stuck to the carpet the tables was swimming in beer and the seats was discusting the holiday was a total nightmare i had reacently got engaged and we wanted to take the children on holiday i also have been struggling with depression and i was looking forward to the holiday for relaxation and to bring the family closer together this was not the case and im struggling more now than i did before hope to here from u soon miss heather harris

Advice: nice quiet place

Activities: a little cafe in mablethorpe itself

" Haven Golden Sands "

Just returned from Haven Golden Sands, and really glad to return home. The caravan was fine, but could have been a little cleaner. The pool changing area is very grubby,as is all the ride area's,which you have to pay really extortionate prices for.The entertainment is nothing short of karaoke singers, trying to sing. The main fun fair area is outdated and in urgent neeed of updating, the prices they charge is really over the top, they charge you for a pass, which only gives you access to the amusements and fun fair etc,it doesnt include any free rides. We played crazy golf and we had to clear all the stones and woodchippings from the greens, which are all falling apart.Costs £2.00 per person, you can get a score card, but they dont have any pencils for you to keep score.Go karts £5.00 for 4 minutes, climb the wall £5.00,go on the rope course £10.00.All in all a very expensive dissapointing holiday, will be going abroad next year. Will probably be cheaper.People keep banging on about how cheap these holidays are,but they arent really. It will cost you an arm and a leg when you get there, best to go to the beach, had a great day out there and it didnt cost another mortgage.

" Fit for the kids  "

We've just returned from a brilliant time at Haven. As first timers I was cautious , but everything was great. They must've cleaned up cause we found the kids areas clean - ballpool, playground, swimming pool and changing area were all ok. Its a great location and designed for the children - we had a 3 yr old and an 8 yr old and they loved it. Daytime entertainers lacked a a bit of charisma - hopefully they'll get better during the year! We'd certainly go back.

Advice: Great Coast , unspoilt beaches , accessible with pushchairs

Activities: The beach & sandtrain

" Good site, but don't expect to much. "

Once arrived, very chaotic booking in procedure. Supposed to book in at 4pm but everybody herded together into bar and given character cards with expected booking in times on them. Took 1 hour over expected time.
Caravan in good location, clean and tidy, not to far from complex, but far enough away to be quiet. Could have done with more utensils for cooking and more information about site, i.e. site had train for people to use and linen no information of where to leave it at the end of the holiday.
Site generally had loads of litter left lying around, no sign of any staff to pick it up. Haven food always expensive so we try not to bother. On past holidays to various site's the food has been good but expensive.
People always criticise about all the arcades and staff trying to make money out of kids, parents etc. all holiday parks do this they are in the business to make money so they are going to try everything.
Near the Seal sanctuary we found a pub called the Ferryboat Inn. would recomend this to anyone, very good food and staff friendly.
We are off to Devon Cliffs in August, been back in July 2005 site good then but reviews on here say different, hope it hasn't changed.
We have been to nine parks in total, Lakes, Quaywest, Berwick, Haggerston, Devon Cliffs, Doniford Bay, Marton Mere, Golden Sands and Allhallows. We are Haven addicts!!!!! We have done holidays with other companies and the tactics used for making money never change.
Haven is a great company, any recent reviews for Devon Cliffs for 2009 would be greatly accepted.

Advice: Local town centre very good, plenty of different shops to investigate, nice prices.

Activities: Ferryboat Inn, Pauls Fish and Chips, Skegness Seal Sanctuary

" Haven horror "

Just come back from a 4 night break at Golden Sands, Mablethorpe and all I can say is "it's good to be back home". The caravans it's self was adequate and reasonably clean, although the bedding left a lot to be desired. The duvets were so thin we had to go and buy some extra blankets for the kids and both myself and my husband had to sleep in our hooded tops. The site needs a really good clean.
Every public area is filthy especially the toilets in the clubhouse. The clubhouse at opening time had dirty, sticky tables from the previous night and the carpet felt like you were sticking to it, there was also a horrible smell. We found that if you weren't in the clubhouse by 6.15pm there was no chance of a table.
We ate in the restaurant on our first night and I was glad that I always carry a pack of wipes in my bag as the tables was sticky and there was food all over the floor. Also the food is awful, microwaved and overpriced.
The swimming pool is overcrowded and the communal changing rooms were the dirtiest I have seen. I had to take my 5 year old daughter to the toilets and was shocked at the state of these.
All I can say is that we went a the start of the season, so I dread to think what the site will be like mid summer. Overall the facilities need a deep clean from top to bottom and I would not recommend this site to anyone or consider visiting it again.

Advice: I would not recommend this site to anyone

" Loved it-going back next week! "

me and my partner are 20 so are a young couple and have a 4 yr old daughter. we booked a sun holiday in may and was given Golden Sands as our booking
Journey was ok, didnt have much traffic and was a good 3 hours.
we were late for check in, so called them to let them know and as soon as we got there we were given our keys immediately and staff were very friendly and helpful.
caravan was standard(due to sun holidays being so cheap) was clean, boiler wasn't very good but still was not too cold, being the month was may the weather was quite nice. also, when the shower was used you couldnt use kitchen taps as water would be affected(no problem really-just had to remember this) but floor would sometimes flood slightly. we hired linen, was clean but very stiff but not too bad.
swimming pool was always clean, no family changing room which was disappointing but could cope without easily. didnt see much of the outdoor pool as it was may it wasnt open.
my daughter fell in love with the pink elephant mascot, we heard photograps were took with children and the mascots, asked at reception when the pink elephant was and they said to ask one of the children's reps which we did and he was very helpful. price of the photographs bit steep being 6quid but come in nice frame so they dont bend on journey home
entertainment was good, discos for children and fun shows every night, after with some adult entertainment that children could also get involved in. as my daughter is young we didnt really stay for much of this but it was always busy but everyone got a seat. we sat at the front most times so could watch our daughter closely.
liked the idea we had to go through amusements when going to other areas like swimming and restaurant as bribed my daughter if she was good all day she could go back there later on before the childrens show-worked well
swimming was free if you had passes which arent expensive, these were included in our holiday price with the sun newspaper.
we went to the restaurant on our last night, food was lovely and great value
beach was 2 minutes away from caravan site as was seal sanctuary which my daughter loved-this again is great for price
park outside was good for all aged children, also had trampoling, go karts etc which was a pound each which was good.
shop was cheap, as was merchandise, my daughter had a lot of things with the pink elephant mascot which were all good value
overall-very happy. my daughter loved it!
going back next week so will update if things have changed from 6 months ago

" Great beach.
Mablethorpe centre... "

Great beach.
Mablethorpe centre was quiet, but every you needed was their.
booking in was a nightmare, took nearly 1 hr and a half, because not staff were there to explain process.
On arrival we went to camp chip shop and the poor girl was working on her own with massive queues and slipping on the grease which was all over the floor.
Most off staff were ok, others (security) was just plain rude.
Entertainment not good, not enough seating, we found pub down the road was great, good food at normal prices, seats and entertainment.
Worst thing of all was having to go through ammusements all the time, for the shop, swimming, bars, food bar etc

Would go to Mablethorpe again, but not Haven

Took 4 kids with us, 2 were teenages and they loved it

we had picked golden sands for our holiday because we thought it was a nice place.how wrong could we have been.the caravan was two small. the seats were dirty with pastry on one of the seats.there were food in the lights ,the toilet was blocked, the caravan next to us had raw sewage coming out of the ground.we could not open the windows because of the smell.there were alot of insects in the caraven.we tried to watch a show but could not find a seat.i needed to sit down due to disability.i also found it very pricey.there were also teenagers roaming the park at night using bad language.this is supposed to be a relaxing park you have got to be joking.we had been looking forward to a nice holiday how wrong we were

" We came to Golden Sands last year and... "

We came to Golden Sands last year and had a fantastic time so this year we extended it to a two week stay, unfortunately it was a decision we regretted. In just a year the site has gone drastically downhill. The entertainment was not great last year but this year was shocking. The Galleon showbar is supposed to stay open until 12 but was shutting as early as 11.10 pm, considering it was July/August we were surprised to say the least. There was too much rubbish on in the clubs, ridiculous adult games and absolutely nothing for the teenagers at all. The live band didnt play a single instrument which we found hysterical, the guitarist didnt change chord once. Security were a total joke and we had to endure 45 minutes of yobs kicking off causing trouble outside funworks at 2.30 in the morning, ripping up fences etc. The lights around the childrens playground never worked once in the entire two weeks we were there, when we complained we were told they were on a timer and had called in whoever to repair it but 2 weeks later they still werent working which put the youngsters playing at risk of injury. The food prices are as ridiculous as ever, we simply refused to pay them and shopped in town at Lidl and the co-op and bought take-aways off the site. However the beach is amazing at Mablethorpe and only a 5 minute walk from the site and I think if we ever return to Golden Sands it will be for the beach only as the Haven site itself has really gone down in the last year.

" We've just returned from 2 weeks at... "

We've just returned from 2 weeks at Golden Sands and had a great time. We were a bit dubious about coming here because we've only ever been to Haggerston Castle - every year since i was born as my Nana owned a van there so it was free!! However we had a really good time, we thought trying to keep 2 boys 14 and 12 and a 7 year old girl all amused at the same time would be difficult but it wasn't. The indoor play area was a godsend - separated into 2 areas based on childrens height it meant all 3 could play together and we could sit and watch - and it's free! The play park is a decent size and the good thing about the trampolines, go carts etc is that they are all situated in one large fenced in area so that no matter what the kids were doing we could sit with a pint and watch all 3 of them. The bars and restaurants on site were of average standard, it's no covent garden or buckingham palace but you get what you pay for! We found the staff very helpful and friendly - treat them the way you expect to be treated and you get the same back. The beach was very near but was full of flies and spiders. Mablethorpe itself is a 20 minute walk away or there's a half hourly thomas the tank train that takes you there (£1 return per person). A really nice restaurant in Mablethorpe is the Fairway - Sunday Carvery was fantastic with all the veg we like at home - proper mash, cabbage, cauli sprouts etc. The only thing we would really complain about is the launderette on the site is absolutely filthy and the machines were useless but theres a really clean one in mablethorpe so that wasn't so much of a problem. All in all we can honestly say we had a great holiday and would definately go back again. P.S. Just outside the site is a bar called The Ferryboat Inn - well worth a visit - lovely beer and great food - pizzas, kebabs and on an evening they do a reasonably priced BBQ.

" Good holiday park.

Good holiday park.

Stayed in a Superior Plus caravan- excellent! Definately worth the money upgrading. Beds made on arrival, master was ensuite, freestanding furniture etc.

Holiday park could do with a refurb to bring it up to modern day standards.

Entertainment was varied and catered towards the children. But if they're happy we are!

However I would recommend!
