We have just returned from Hafan Y...
6 / 10
Mar 2008, Mrs D Peters

We have just returned from Hafan Y Mor and I felt I had to write a review of the place as this was the first place I looked AFTER booking the break! To be honest because of the reviews I had read i had mixed feelings of what I was to expect.
This was the first time I had ever been away in the UK ( I normally get as far as Manchester airport!!) and was not expecting great things. My husband and two children ( 3 & 2) set off on Good Friday for the journey to Hafan Y Mor. We took the scenic route, mainly to avoid the bank holiday traffic, and had the most wonderful views all the way, simply breathtaking.
On arrival we parked where we were told to and were directed to "The Boardwalk" to check in. We got there to be told check in had closed ( it was 5.15pm) so we asked where we were to go and were pointed in the direction of reception, where we had just walked from! Now don't get me wrong it is not that far but we are talking "arctic weather conditions" with wo young children. The queue in reception didn't look that long and I was thinking "great, the reviews I read said the queues for check in were very long" . The queue might not of been long but my goodness slow is not the word, I have absolutely no idea why some people were taking 15 minutes to check in, as I took literally 30 seconds!
We had booked superior plus self catering and we were in the snowdonia view area of the park. I was a bit worried that this was a bit too close to the centre but was relieved we didn't have far to walk as the weather was absolutely freezing cold, stormy and wet!The caravan itself was a very pleasant surprise.Very clean with what looked like a brand new shower, kitchen units and carpet.
The first night must have been the coldest night this year, thank goodness i had taken extra duvets for all of us plus fleece all in ones for the children ( no heating in the bedrooms or bathroom/toilet!). We had the fire in the lounge on constantly and even resorted to turning the oven and hobs on when we were in the lounge area just to get some extra warmth. Needless to say the very next morning we drove to the nearest town to buy a fan heater which did the trick very nicely.
Now,the reason I have scored the overall rating 6. The whole reason I chose this resort over a smaller independently owned site is because of the splashzone. Knowing British weather cannot be relied upon I wanted somewhere indoors that we could have some family fun. After sorting the heating out we excitedly walked into the splash zone which I wrongly presumed would be "tropical temperatures" like many indoor swimming complexes are. We were directed to the family changing area which comfortably fitted in 1 adult and 1 toddler ,certainly not a family! I commented to my husband how cold it felt and said that surely this wasn't where you got changed when you came out of the swimming pool. We managed to find two lockers, holding on to two freezing toddlers this was not an easy task and made our way to the pools. The pools/ slides were fine but I have never ever been anywhere so cold in my entire life. After 10 minutes of trying to smile through it and pretend to our children this was fun my two year olds lips were blue and this is absolutely NO exaggeration. I became quite worried and got both my children under the lukewarm showers while my husband went to get towels - we wrapped both the children up and tried to find a changing room but everyone was going through the same thing and worried parents were just trying to get their children warm and dry. We eventually all got dry and found feeling in our feet and headed back out to overhear that a gas pipe had been burst and there was NO HEATING in the splashzone. I am sorry but a busy Easter weekend or not children should not have been allowed into those conditions and the splashzone should have been closed whilst emergency pumbers were bought in. I was so disappointed but was determined to still enjoy the rest of our weekend.
The beach was fantastic and the views glorious. We wrapped up warm and had a wondeful walk and the children had a great splash in their wellies.
The soft play area was great and so was the adventure playground. We had a trip into Portmadog and went to see the railway which the children loved. The evening entertainment was as expected basic but good. A word of warning,if you want to sit near the front for the childrens entertainment so you can keep your eye on them get down to the boardwalk vwry early it got absolutely packed!
Check out was very simple, just throw your key into a big bucket in reception!
On the way back we went to Greenwood Forest Park which was brilliant. Highly, highly recommend it especially for the little ones.
All in all had a great break.

Jan 2008, Mrs P Blee

This was our 3rd Haven Holiday, we try different parks. When we arrived they couldn’t find us on their books. But as I booked silver and none left they found us an owners gold one beside the lake, where you see the ducks every day. It was lovely. Full marks to the staff. My only fault was it was very far from the main buildings, the Bonga Wonga bar was closed, so everyone in our site had a good walk to the show bar. They could do with more lighting at night.
The pool is a ten. The best I have seen so far. The children loved it. The outdoor play areas very good, older children can use them too. Not to babyish.
Shows weren’t great, but I have seen worse, don’t go to these parks expecting great shows. The shops are always dearer but handy for a paper etc. Hate that all these places all charge for crazy golf and make a point of you cant share the clubs... hello... with 3 children who give up after 5 mins.
Staff were okay. Don't think I'd go back, but we had a good holiday.

My family absolutely loved it here. We went half board in October for a week, and it only cost £208. That’s for 2 adults and 3 children! I thought this was a bargain, as my quote for self-catering was £192!!
The entertainment is fantastic. Their Halloween show was amazing! The kids are NEVER bored.
The chalet was a little small, with only 2 small bedrooms and a bathroom and hallway, but after the first day we realised that it didn’t really matter, because there was too much to do and we were hardly in it. It was clean though, which is what matters to me.
The food was nice, it made such a difference going half board rather than self catering. It seemed to add hours on to every day because usually when we're self catering, it’s gone dinner by the time the kids are fed and everywhere cleaned up! So it was a nice change.
The only thing that let the holiday site down was that it now has bouncy castles and those little water shooting games that you see at fun fairs dotted around the site. And the kids want a go every time you walk past. At £1 a go, it became rather costly. The site doesn’t need these, there’s enough to do already! I know it’s all about making money but it does put you off a bit.
Anyway a fantastic time was had by all. That was the 4th time for us at Hafan Y Mor and I’m booking again this year. We love it.

Every Year we go to Hafan Y Mor in Wales. Its Great we usually book a few caravans and the whole family go. There is lots of things to do.
The swimming pool is Great all the family love it. At night there is lots of entertainment in a 3 clubs and the arcades are very big. Also the ice cream parlour is big and at cheap prices.
The beach is really nice with blue waters and just further on from the beach is a little cove we you'll see dolphins. Don't waste you're money by booking at Devon cliffs book at Hafan y Mor.

I have just returned from a 3 night...

Oct 2007, Mrs K Longley

I have just returned from a 3 night holiday at Hafan Y Mor, and it has exceeded expectations. On arrival the queue to check in was short but a little slow moving. Our accommodation had a funny smell in the bathroom and entrance way but not too bad in the bedroom. The walls were very thin and you could hear EVERYTHING in the adjoining rooms. I was impressed to see a tv/dvd player with various channels and pretty good reception. The room was clean and tidy.
Our apartment was very close to the half board restaurant. The food was cafe style but plenty of choice and not too busy (apart from the toasters in the mornings). Only words of advice with regards to the food is if it could be watered down, it was! The gravy, custard, orange juice were rubbish, but we discovered that early on and avoided them. The on site shop is quite expensive but okay for the odd bits. The games in the amusements were good value and not too busy. Shame you can't park closer to the apartments.

I have just returned from this...
6 / 10
Sep 2007, Mrs L Blackburn

I have just returned from this holiday and come back with mixed feelings about the whole experience.
The setting and landscape of this park is fabulous! Being so close to Snowdonia National Park was amazing and we explored a great deal. Some of the scenery is breathtaking! Gorgeous! The beach closest to the park is also lovely and again with wonderful scenery. The children's playground was great for my daughter (4) and the pedalos were good fun though a little expensive.
The accomodation was cited as Gold and was the apartment in the Ogwen block. It was furnished ok and was fairly spacious. However the mattress on our bed was absolutely terrible! Springs galore. On the first night we also discovered that the walls were incredibly thin and that the man above us snored rather loudly allllll night! I had a very bad nights sleep on the first night because the noise was incessant.
The park is very big and it does have good facilities on it. To get to the entertainment it was a bit of a walk but we did not mind as the weather was good. However when we went swimming we took the car for ease.
Half Board though was a total let down, we arrived for our evening meal with expectations of decent food but not gourmet and were let down totally. It was of poor quality and most of the food on offer was junk. I had jacket potatoes with salad on the first night and the rest I did not bother with. My husband tried some of the main dishes on offer and was not impressed.
For breakfast it was the standard cooked breakfast and cereals but again the cereals were cardboard in quality and the cooked breakfast was okish but how anyone can poach an egg and make it taste like rubber is beyond me!
There was only white bread on offer to be toasted and by the end of our stay there was only one coffee machine working leading to huuuuge queues.
On the second night we tried the evening meal and again found the food on offer to be poor! The curry was just terrible and again we all ate jacket potatoes and salad. At this point we decided to stick with the breakfast and miss the evening meal.
Entertainment on offer in the camp was OK though some of the funstars could barely hold a note and the country and western night was pretty dire! However we did enjoy a 'stars in your eyes night' which was very well done (if a little ill-timed by making fun of Pavarotti despite the fact he had just died?).
The swimming pool was good but the changing facilities are in need of an upgrade and there is a lack of baby changing facilities in there which made it difficult with my son of nine months.
I would consider going again mainly for the beach and surrounding area as for the park itself. I would not consider going in an apartment and would stick to a caravan or chalet. I would not go half board again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! terrible.

We as a family with 2 children were...

Sep 2007, Mrs C Wynne

We as a family with 2 children were looking forward to our 4 day break in a caravan. We travelled from Wrexham which took 2 hours the children were ready to stretch their legs, we arrived safely went to get our keys. Our first disappointment was we weren’t in a caravan, a streak of dread ran through my body it was the dreaded apartments we were in.
We drove round unlocked the front door the smell was disgusting - that was before we opened the door to the apartment we were staying in. We went in - it was filthy, the smell was unbelievable, the beds were dirty as were the floors, walls, bathroom. Don’t get me started on the cooker! We tried to be moved but they had nothing to offer us. We stayed the night then asked again if they had anything else, there was another apartment across from where we were staying. That was just as bad so we decided to go home we were there less than 24 hours, our children were gutted but I couldn’t have let them stay in that grotty room for another second.
So before you book, check you’re not in an apartment - we have learnt the hard way.

Stayed in a caravan booked with...

Aug 2007, Mr K POWER

Stayed in a caravan booked with directcaravanholidays.co.uk in Cader Idris.
We've got 3 boys - 1, 3 and 6 and they really enjoyed the pool and Bonga Wonga club (evening entertainment). It's a great base to explore the region - I would recommend the Greenwood Park near to Caernarfon (it accepts clubcard vouchers) if the weather's dry for a good day out - we were there from opening to closing time and just about saw everything.
As for the park - we didn't eat on site, so can't comment. But would definitely stay there again in a few years' time.

For this is our second year at Hafan...

For this is our second year at Hafan Y Mor and again, we really enjoyed our stay. I am 15 and my family and I chose to stay in a Gold Self Catering, 3 bedroomed caravan.
On arrival, the queue wasn't to bad and we were told clearly where our caravan was and how to get there. On arriving at the caravan however, we found that all the windows were wide open and the door was unlocked... and we soon found out why. As soon as we stepped in, we could smell a strong odour of cigarettes which the cleaners obviously had tried to cover up. Also, my sister and myself have asthma so this wasn't too pleasant! Outside the caravan were cigarette stubs which had not been attempted to be cleaned up. We then spent a total of £7.50 on air fresheners form the local ASDA to get rid of the cigarette smell. We complained the next day and got £7.50 for the money that we had spent on air fresheners.
After our evening meal, we got ready for the evenings entertainment. From our past experiences, we went too our favourite place, the SHOWBAR!!!!!! it was a great night out! There was a adult game show which was really funny, a band, a disco and dances from the funstars!! The other nights consisted of comedy acts, more bands, game shows for the audience to participate and funstars shows which the funstars participated in!
The next morning, my sister and I went to the splash zone, when it opened at 10am. They have great pool facilities there including; a wave machine, rapids, 3 flumes, a large slide, a swimming area and an area for babies and youngsters which consisted of small slides and amusements for the infants. The changing rooms were adequate; Containing only 4 showers (only 3 working) which blasted out tepid water. The swimming facilities themselves were very exciting as we went every morning!
Although we went out during the day, the park itself has many fun places for everyone. PAWS, for toddlers and youngsters and TCO for teenages to chill and meet new friends. Trampolines, bouncy castle, arcades, gift shop and activities during the day such as wrestling (hilarious!), and talent shows went on.
WHY ARE THEY TAKING RICHIE (THE SHOWBAR PRESENTER) OFF THE STAGE????? HE IS SO FUNNY AND ENTERTAINING AND THE SHOWBAR WILL NOT BE THE SAME WITHOUT HIM! THEY ARE PUTTING HIM IN A OFFICE.... WHAT A WASTE OF HIS TALENTS!!!!!...HE SHOULD BE ON THE STAGE............!!!!
The other funstars such as Dane and Erin were really good dancers and singers!!
SO THANK U FOR SUCH A GREAT STAY HAFAN Y MOR!!!

We had a lovely caravan and the park although a little full was not bad. Meals served reminded me of school dinners, however they weren't too bad.
Show bar is great for evening entertainment, after 9pm it starts to get going. We really enjoyed a full breakfast from the lakeside pub over the railway line, much better than school dinner in Afon gardens. I personally enjoyed the activities, best of all archery. Splash is a great place to have fun, also with various activities such as scuba diving lessons.
We had a trip on the welsh highlands railway, from Caernarfon, it takes you on a scenic journey through Snowdonia. It is well recommended. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our short break and hope to return.

I have just returned from a 4 night...

Jul 2007, Mrs D O Brien

I have just returned from a 4 night stay at your holiday park or should I say 1 night stay as the 2 bed silver accommodation was so appalling not to mention the poor quality of food which we pre-booked as half board, we refused to stay any longer.
We knew we were in trouble when we opened the door to our apartment and were met by the smell of damp and overall grubbiness. The carpet was sticky to walk on and the window frames were rotting, bathroom door had holes in it and the shower was not very inviting either. Bedroom walls had writing on them. This place needs a major refurbishment. High levels of comfort is a joke. I attach a quote from their website which to me is very misleading.
"Experience high levels of comfort and style with a modern and spacious feel in our Silver Apartments. Our well-equipped Silver Apartments offer a touch of luxury with superior standards of furnishings and fittings.
Furnished to an excellent standard." ????
The tables in the dining area were so dirty and sticky, and we saw nobody wiping down tables while we dined there for the first night only.
Let me finish off by saying that our holiday cost us double as we had to find alternative accommodation as your company said there was no upgrade available, however we feel that an upgrade wouldn't of helped much. Staff were friendly but unfortunately could not help our situation. Facilities on site such as bouncing castle and crazy golf were a rip off.
Would we ever go back to Hafan Y Mor, NO.
Very Unsatisfied Customer

We spent a week at Hafan Y Mor and loved it. We had bronze half board accommodation, and it suited our needs, we only slept in it, so found it adequate.
The food and choice was brilliant, and the "eat as much as you want" went down extremely well. The choice of food was good and the puddings delicious. The prices on the complex are a bit steep and the cost of the extra activities can work out expensive.
The entertainment was okay, although my previous Haven holidays always seemed to have a bit of variety, whereas at Hafan Y mor it was singing every night, which got a bit boring and tedious, considering that the Funstars, although great as they were, could not really hold a note or sing very well. Richie Lavelle, the host was fantastic, he really knew what he was doing and he definitely was good at what he does. The kids loved it, and it passed the evening. One complaint, it seems that the same people were chosen each night for games etc...but all round a good holiday and great food !
