" great relaxing hotel "

having been to this hotel in 2001 we decided to return and were not disapointed once again by the hotel. rooms are spotless clean and comfortable with tv radio bath/shower. fridge can be hired for 6 euros a day and would be essential in high season for cool drinks and air con free for 3 hours per day only unless you pay extra at reception (6 euros a day)all rooms have a hairdryer so tell the good lady to leave hers at home as the ones supplied will do the job no problem. the food at the hotel during our stay was of a very high standard and i would not listen to complaints from other reviews as i found them totaly of the mark. there is always something for even the fussy eater if only they would be prepared to try it rather than turn there nose up and write false reviews. if you are not sure what a dish is ask the staff who are only to happy to help. the pool area is absolutely fabulous with no need to be up before daylight for a sunbed as there are plenty all day long. the pool itself is spotless and is cleaned thoroughly every night by the amazing maintenance team and the pool bar serves food and drink all day from 10am to 7pm although prices are a bit on the high side because of the euro. the only thing to let down the hotel is no evening entertainment at all which would be nice to round of the day at this great hotel. we had such a good time we will be returning again for a third stay in the near future

Advice: small town not great for shopers or clubers

Activities:

Good for: Beach

" Bad honeymoon "

My and my partner booked our honeymoon at the golden sun. It advertised champagne or flowers on request for honeymooners. We arrived there, there was no polite greeting, no flowers or champagne, cigarette burns in our sheets and overlooked scrubland. We were awoken early in the morning by gun shots from over the fields and waited over an our for a cleaner to come and spray the ants in our bathroom. Breakfast was unexeptable so we spent more money at the local cafe. No evening juice or any form of drink included in your evening meal for half board. Not recommended for holiday, definatly do not go there on your honeymoon you will be bitterly dissapointed.

Advice: not much to do

Activities: 'breakfast, dinner, lunch' very reasonable prices considering the bad euro exchange

" Yes, very mixed reviews! Well, when... "

Yes, very mixed reviews! Well, when we stayed the hotel was well below standard. Rooms were adequate but security and safety poor and water pouring through ceiling when it rained. Lighting and bathroom fixtures were either broken or loose. Not sure if it has had it supposed refurbishment but the photos on their website are ficticious and very misleading! There's definitely no flowers or petals! No TV or even a kettle (not allowed as unable to eat in rooms!). Breakfast was very poor and selection was very weird - yes I know I'm in Greece, but the stuff they had on offer was not acceptable! Pool was nice. Some of the staff were abit unhelpful and moody, but overall OK. Holiday ruined by the deafening noise of the planes coming into land - don't go here or to any of the hotels on this road if you want a peacful holiday! Was given a room overlooking waste land, which at first thought was nice, as had sea view as well, but then the planes came in at 5.30am in the morning, meaning very little sleep!

" My Boyfriend and I went to the Golden... "

My Boyfriend and I went to the Golden sun hotel last year-however were put off by the mixed reviews, some were excellent and some seemed really, really awful. We were really anxious about it but decided to take a risk. We needent have worried however, the hotel was fine and suited to us perfectly-The staff were incredibly helpful, the barman hilarious and very laid back (if you needed to go to your room or safe to get money he would accept the money later-he was very honest and trusted you) the pool bar food is excellent. Cheap, and a mixture of food, but you got what you expected and it was fine. We only got up two days for breakfast, wasn't amazing but you only need a few basics in the morning and coffee, juices, cereal and pastries were provided, however people seem to complain about the lack of English breakfast on holiday review sites-it isn't england! You're abroad! So what do you expect? Expect foreign and light breakfasts particularly in hot countries, with a few english comforts thrown in.

The pool was beautiful and relaxing, never overcrowded and a kids pool if you have children. The pool bar waitress gemma was very helpful and extremely friendly-don't forget to say hi!

In terms of the rooms, they were basic but very clean. If you are looking for luxury I reccomend a five star hotel, but this one exceeded our expectations and we had a brilliant time. I'd reccomend hiring a car out there as there were loads of places we didn't see because we didn't have a car. Also I'd reccomend the horse riding although you should probably see the caves yourselves and drive there as the boat was an all day long journey and we didn't really stop and look around.

Not a holiday for old couples or couples searching for a relaxed luxury holiday with history etc, for that i'd go to mainline greece as Zante is all about the nightlife and atmosphere. However, I must admit that it is perfect for kids, we made friends with a couple and their child; check out laganas for it's especially children friendly restaurants with children play areas.

I had a brilliant time, but make sure you don't go when it's too hot as it really does get unbearably hot in the afternoon.

" My Boyfriend and i arrived back from... "

My Boyfriend and i arrived back from the golden sun hotel, kalamaki, yesterday and thought the hotel was clean, well located to beach and main town. The food however (half board) was awful. Really bad, the breakfast was cereal, bread or angel delight. We went to try the evening meal at the hotel on our second night. The meal they were serving was onion bahji and chips with angel delight. We didn't eat there that night or any other night. It really was very dissapointing. The hotel though was really clean the room was big enough and the balcany was lovely, overlooking the pool. Before i went on holiday i read some reviews on the golden sun hotel and there were some really bad reviws about the rooms. For example people had written there was no kettle etc. I have been to kalamaki lots of times and what people don't realise is that greece is very basic compared to a resot in spain for example. In our room we had a TV, we payed 35euros for a fridge for a week, 35for air conditioning for the week and 20 for the safe for a week. As long as your willing to pay for these things which are quite reasonably priced then your fine. The pool was amazing, really big and the jazuzzi comes on from 12-3. The snack bar wasnt great but not expensive at all. Overall we had a great time at this hotel as we didnt plan on eating at the hotel that much anyway as we like the resturants in kalamaki. If you are planning on just eating in the hotel then i would advise you to take some extra money as you may want to eat out instead!!

" We were put here on our honeymoon, as... "

We were put here on our honeymoon, as the hotel we had booked was over booked. We were not impressed at first but the hotel and especially it's staff ended up being amazing.

Good:
GEMMA - pool bar waitress, she made our holiday.
Maid Service- our rooms were cleaned to a high standard every day.
Breakfast - Was healthy and delicious. Filled us till lunchtime.
Reception - very friendly and were always there to help.
Reps- our Rep from My Travel was amazing and handled our mix up very well, we received enough money to hire a car for three days.
Pool - cleaned every two days and a suntrap, massages worth every penny.
Resort - amazing and still unspoilt, apart from lads selling DVD's around pool, we were never bothered.

Bad:
The owner of the hotel made no effort to help the guy who owned the pool bar. They were packing up but ended up staying when we were there.
The Gym was tiny with nothing plugged in to use.
The internet connection was very expensive.
The bar didn't have a wide range of drinks.
A taxi rank is close to the pool and you can hear their radios all the time
The airport is just behind the hotel so you get to see all the planes coming in and out but it was fun to watch.
There were no plugs in the bathroom, so to wash clothes was a pain.

I can safely say you will like this hotel and my bad points are not that bad and did not ruin our honeymoon.

" Everything at the Golden Sun was... "

Everything at the Golden Sun was perfect except the breakfasts, if you liked beans you were laughing, as that was the only hot item on the menu. I don't think they had ever heard of sausages, tomatoes, bacon, mushrooms, fried eggs, etc, etc.

I know they were continental breakfasts but they were pretty pathetic. In fact the worst we have ever come across, as I say everything else was perfect. It’s just a pity they didn't put a bit more thought into the food to make it a perfect holiday because the island was fantastic.

(Forgot to mention the third world airport, departure lounge was about the size of our lounge at home, and with a few hundred people in it as you can imagine it gets a bit crowded, so try not to fly on a Sunday as it tends to be the busiest day).

" Hotel room was tiny. Supposed to be a... "

Hotel room was tiny. Supposed to be a family room charged for three people. Two singles and a camp bed. Just about fitted it into the room. Breakfast poor. no social activities in hotel. No TV, kettle etc in rooms. pool good.
Resort was excellent, even though still only half built after the earthquake in the 60's. Hire car a must. The island is worth seeing in full. Some excellent restaurants and bars.
