I'd echo all the positive things said...
8 / 10
May 2008, Mr N R Taylor

I'd echo all the positive things said here on earlier reviews. Although a couple of matters let the hotel down for us.
The whole hotel still looks new and is being constantly cleaned from top to bottom. Its spotless throughout and there are plenty of places to either sit and relax or do something more energetic if you wish!
We booked and paid extra for a 'superior' room, but we later found out that ours was considererably smaller than all the other ones one either side! We did mention it several times, the first two occasions the staff confirmed the rooms were all the same size (I honestly believe they didn't actually realise rather than 'lied'). We were offered another room eventually, after a week, but it was on the ground floor with little to no view and nearer to families with noisy children, so we decided to stay on our original 'fourth floor' one which had a great view, but it was not 'superior' as we'd paid for - so one point dropped for this (at least).
ALL the staff were superb, the maids, the receptionists, the waiters & waitresses, the porters, the managers, everyone! The bar staff seemed a little less superb tho - and it was easy to spot why - the head barman! He's called Antonious, but should be called Zeus as he obviously thinks he's the main man in Greece. He was easily the most the self centred, aloof, arrogant and rude barman in the the resort, let alone hotel. I think the other bar staff were scared of him. They were fine when out of his sight! My wife noticed something about him on the first night, so we rarely drank at the main bar (which is very expensive, even for a hotel in Greece). We heard several stories about his behaviour, but experienced it first hand on our last night. We'd had a wonderful day out, a great evening meal in Stalis and a few drinks in town - we returned to the hotel bar for a last couple with friends we had met. We ordered a 'round' and I left the money for all the drinks in the receipt card on the bar, which he wouldn't take (not unusual in Greece as they tend to wait til when you leave, but I wanted to pay for both sets of drinks). My friends had other drinks (I still hadn't finished mine), decided to leave as their child was poorly and paid their bill and the our initial joint one too.
Ten minutes later he asked me to pay my THREE bills - including our original slip/receipt, which now mysteriously included a drink we'd not even had! I explained my friend had paid two sets of bills, theirs and mine, with the cash inside I'd left earlier. We argued for quite a while and he was adamant I had not paid him at all - saying only I could pay my own bill!!!! He even suggested I had to ASK for his permission to let my froend pay my bill with my money!!! He was not interested to listen to any reasoning whatsoever and got quite nasty - but we refused to pay! He said he'd have to pay the bill himself and wasn't bothered if we had to pay it twice!!! As far as he was concerned, as I hadn't physically paid HIM, I hadn't paid, eventhough our bill had been paid - he simply produced HIS copy (which wasn't even correct!). We agreed we would see him on our last day, with our friends to back up what had happened.
He opens the bar at 5pm and our coach was due to leave to the airport at 5.50 - but he actually came to the downstairs lobby looking for us as soon as he arrived and created a scene in front of all the other guests wating to leave, simply repeating himself over and over about us not paying, not listening to what anyone had to say and at point calling me a liar (just after he'd changed his story about the previous night's events) - waving his receipts in my face. He would not accept my friend's explanation that he'd paid - saying simply that I hadn't!!!! I quite cooly ignored him as I didn't fancy getting involved or arrested, eventhough I was absolutely fuming and insulted!!! It was obvious he was trying it on - and I bet many people would pay twice to avoid the confrontation! I thought about it for a second!
He threated us with the manager, which I gladly agreed to - as we were in the right! The manager came, a heated discussion in Greek ensued and the head barman disappeared back upstairs, still waving his receipts. All this over the price of 3 drinks mind, anyone would have thought its a drinks bill for whole fortnight!!!!! After we'd spent somewhere in the region of £3000 in all, why would I even want to try and fiddle a bill of about £20????
Neither of them said what the outcome was - so just before we left we asked for the manager to return to confirm we wouldn't be delayed for whatever reason. He was absolutlely fine, saying that because we said we'd paid, he was happy we had! I complemented him on his staff, apart from the idiot upstairs, at which he was very gracious and thanked us for our comments. I wished I'd spoken to him earlier, but had no reason to?
My guess was he gave the barman a bit of telling off! I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't last this season as I then heard other stories that he'd been putting additional bills in other people's cards too - for example, if someone hadn't paid for whatever reason, he just slipped their bill into someone else's card!
So another point lost I'm afraid! Moral is, drink elsewhere, or pay for each drink at the time! The rest of the hotel is great tho (although there were far too many children for our liking)!!!

This hotel is amazing! Me and my...
10 / 10
Mar 2008, Miss LB Bella

This hotel is amazing! Me and my family had the time of our lives here. We arrived at night and were staying right at the top of the hill. But they have golf buggy type things, and you get in, no more than about 5, with your luggage and they take you right to your doorstep! The rooms are lovely. Perfectly clean, lovely beds, everything looks new. Bathroom was spotless, not a crack in the wall, nothing!! Rooms are cleaned everyday, tip the cleaners as everyday we saw them pushing huge trolleys around up and down hills in 40+ degrees and they looked so hot, but everytime you walk past they stop and say hi.
The whole place is spotless, and we noticed at night they use little machines to clean the pools and early every morning the cleaners washed the sunbeds and all around the pool until it was perfect. Even in high season there was always enough sunbeds for eveyone. 3 pools, one quiet, which is very relaxing, one abit louder for everyone and a kids one aswell. The animation team are great, always keeping eveyone busy with games in the pool, water polo, water gym, even yoga in the morning while the suns coming up!
The food was lovely, the breakfast was so good, so much to choose, pancakes cooked fresh in front of you, full english, a range of breads and fillings, youghurts.....etc
Dinner was great too, a different main meat everyday which they cook for you, one day it's a sirloin steak, then a fish, then it's lamb, meatbals, even squid!! etc. Im a very fussy eater but had all my favourites there, loads of different pastas, chicken, chips, vegetables, lasagne, pizza, meat pies, loads of veggie stuff and loads of different sauces and dressings. Dessert was amazing! About 10 different cakes, ice creams, jelly, things id never seen before, baclavas are lovely!
The food was of a very high quality, constantly being replenished, and chucked anything that had been there for about 10 mins and put new stuff in. Obviously you can smoke in crete but you can't in the restaurant, they have a terraced dining area outside if guests want to smoke during meals so no smoke in restaurant at all.
Staff are very friendly and helpful, we wanted more pillows as they were very soft so we asked at reception, about 10 mins later we went back to our rooms and there they were!! We didn't go to the evening entertainment but we often came back and saw people walking back to their rooms laughing and chatting with other guests so I think they'd had a good time!!
The only thing I didn't like was that there was a heatwave and it was over 40 degrees everyday and the pools are sal****er which frustrated me abit!
Overall I LOVED this hotel, I would reccommend it to families.

This is a lovely hotel. Spotlessly...

Sep 2007, Mrs A Flood

This is a lovely hotel. Spotlessly clean and the best in the area. The food was very nice, lots of choice and fresh portions are continuously being brought out. You are allowed one A la Carte meal per week (although we were not told). Just ask your waiter to book the table for you. Nice restaurant although didn't think the food was any better, but nice for a change and to watch the sun setting.
The pool areas are very nice, the bottom one for all ages (included pool games), but was very busy, the middle one did not allow children (relaxing pool) and the top had 2 slides so great for children. We spent most of our days up there. You did need to put towels out by 9 ish otherwise you struggled to get an umbrella. Sunbeds are always OK, but they didn't have extra umbrellas. The pool snack bar was OK, but very standard (ie burger, chips etc), a bit more of a selection would be good although the bottom bar did, but it is a bit of a walk back up the hill.
Now I've mentioned the hills, let me explain. We stayed in the "middle" section overlooking the relaxing pool. this was great because you are half way. Lots of people staying at the top complained of the hill which was VERY steep. Think twice if you struggle to walk.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, rooms were quite big and comfortable. The only thing extra they should include is tea/coffee making facilities.
This hotel is nearer to Stalis than Hersonissos. You can walk into Stailis in 10 mins and it is lovely. Lots of shops, bars and a nice beach. Hersonissos is VERY busy and a lot further. We went on the Nemo fishing cruise which was great and WaterCity waterpark was really good, well worth going on both.
The downside on the Hotel was the evening entertainment. Although the team tried hard it was very poor (not 4* entertainment) and because it is held in the Amphitheatre you cannot sit and have a drink - I think they are losing out there. All in all a lovely holiday and I would definitely recommend it.

Apr 2007, Ms F Jackson

I have stayed at the Grand Hotel 3 times now and each time I enjoy it just as much as the last. I usually visit with my Partner but this time I am treating my 13yr old Daughter and my 70yr old Mother in May 07. What can I say this hotel suits all ages.
The staff are always friendly and are more than happy to help where ever they can. The hotel is very clean and comfy and the views from the top floor of the buildings are fabulous. We have traveled around by local bus and hired a car to take a trip up into the mountains. This is a must for those who want fantastic scenery and the traditional Cretian charm. The pools are relaxing and never seem to be crowded, no towels on the sun beds at dawn! The food is varied and the dining hours are more than adequate.
I would truthfully recommend this hotel to all, we love it and will continue to visit yearly. Thank you to all at the Grand Hotel.

The Grand is an excellent hotel,...

Nov 2005, Mrs P Lathan

The Grand is an excellent hotel, situated between the resorts of Hersonissos and Stalis and a comfortable walking distance into each resort.
The beach is across the main coastal road which can be very busy so take care, but buses and the mini train stop at the hotel entrance if you want to explore.
The rooms were very clean, spacious and well equipped. The food is good and plentiful, and the dining room also has an outdoor seating area where the smokers tended to sit.
The only fault we found with this hotel was the service at the bar upstairs, extremely slow and offhand! We gave up after the second night and walked into Stalis instead, there's loads of lovely places to eat and drink and its a pleasant walk.
Despite the service at the bar, everything else was first class and we will definitely be back.
