Butlins Skegness reviews

Good family fun

May 2012, Sarah M

This was our second family holiday to Butlins Skegness and we enjoyed it just as much as the first time we came. We stayed in standard accommodation, and will definitely be upgrading to silver or higher next trip. Although clean and basic and had the added advantage of being close to everything, the beds were lumpy, the carpet was sticky and the sofa had definitely seen better days! We could have complained but to be honest we'd booked the holiday through a newspaper deal and you get what you pay for. The rest of the holiday was fab. We first came in Oct 2011 and that time we stayed half board which was so much easier with young kids. This time we stayed self catering and spent the holiday staring wistfully through the window at the half boarders!! The entertainment for the kids throughout the day was excellent, bit disappointed with the evening shows in centre stage as only suitable for kids 2 out of the 4 nights but we still found enough for them to do. We ate at the sun and moon (overpriced but lovely), finnagans (very nice and reasonably priced) and burger king (ok but again overpriced) and got a takeaway from papa johns (ok but very overpriced). Overall we did enjoy our holiday and we are already planning our next visit.

We just came back from Skegness.Fantastic place for families and kids!!!Lots of activities in resort.Weather was absolutely crap April - May so we could not enjoy time outside and sea side.
To be honest brochure is bit too beautiful for real place.I was expecting something more posh and luxury like in the book.Everything looks cheap and you can meet lots of poor people .Looks everywhere Very expensive holiday but actually I saw lots of poor ( benefits ) families .They even stole my daughters hat:-O
Next time I ll try Bognor - looks really good on the brochure - lets check the real Butlins Bognor.

Oct 2011, finnigins rat food

We spent 5 days in butlins skegness and had two complaints
first one was on the first day and we had a question that a female staff member was unable to help us with when my husband told her it was ok he would return in the morning see someone who could help as he turned to leave she very ruedly and unproffesionally said whatever we could not bileve what we heard we could not bileve she was not repremanded on the spot.
The second was finnigins fish and chips on our last night there we orderd two chips and one fish to take back to our apartment and all i can say is disgusting is far two nice a word for it the fish was black not brownt not crispy but black the chips when bent in the middle did not show white fluffy potatoe instead they were like rubber my husband was so angry i did not want him to take them back and complaine as i dont think he would of been responsable for his actions so i put them in the bin and cooked something for us to eat but we could not get over just how bad the food was and how the people on shift dared to sell that garbbish.
We were lucky enough we could afford to bin the rat food but what about. The people with children who have saved hard to take there children away or the single parent who also can not afford to put food in the bin they would have had to feed there childr en food that wasnt fit for human conssumption. Finnigens should be shut down disgusting
.The appartments were fine not shining or sparkling just ok it depends on your own personal standards.
I would like to also say those two complaints were only two out of a whole week the other members of staff were polite cheerfull and totally went out of there way to help you and make shure your stay was very enjoyable i would recomend butlins as to be fair they are not to blame for finnigins fish and chips and there rude staff member wont last long with that attitude

We went on holiday during the middle of July and it was absolutely fantastic. We arrived at 5pm to receieve our keys and directions to our apartments. Beware about the directions, because it was the most confusing piece of information I have ever been giving. Instead of saying 'go along the road a bit, and it's on your right', I was giving a barrage of directions using the Butlins map which was no help whatsoever.
Other than the initial confusion, the holiday went very smoothly. The apartment that we had, which was the basic package, far exceeded expectations. It was immaculate and the furnishings were fantastic. The complex was brilliant which contained a free theme park, lots of activities from laser tag to the beach area that had oversized beach items. The park also had several bars and restaurants which served fantastic food (highly recommend the fish and chips) and had excellent entertainment nightly (The Briefcase Blues Brothers were superb!).
All in all we had a fantastic holiday and would definitely return and recommend to others.

went to butlins skegness with my husband neice age 14 and nephew age 11 this is our third year and stayed in gold apartment this year . Fantastic accomadation only downside to it was only one bin for the whole apartment and no freezer compartment which it said it had when we booked it and was shown around another gold apartment last year . Prices have really gone up this year and majority of staff are polish and cannot understand what you are saying which is abit poor. we will be going back as the kids love it

  • Holiday Date:Aug 2011
  • Advice: could do with another exit on the beach at the top of gold apartments save walking right down to the fence gate

Booked the holiday on a whim about a month before we went. Then checked out the reviews and began to fear for the worst!
Well, I'm outstanded and cant believe some of the bad reviewers stayed the same place as us. We arrived at 1.30pm and check in was smooth and took less than five minutes. Not being able to get into our appartment till 4pm, we decided to take a wander around the site. Everywhere was clean and with the free rides, the kiddies play castle and the photo beach, it was nearly 6 before we realised the time and headed around to the apartment.
First impressions were good, the appartment was clean if a little frayed around the edges (some poor plaster patch-ups in the kids room and some paint chipped away where door handles had banged against the wall). Kids were straight out in the courtyard, but with overlooking balcony we easily kept an eye on them as we unpacked, had a coffee and took the weight off for a few minutes.
An hour later we were all set and decided to head out and grab some food. We stumbled upon the on-site pub, The Sun & Moon and popped in. Food was good (if a little pricey), atmosphere was great and the outdoor play area kept little'uns ammused while we waited. Service was great and bar staff were both friendly and helpfull. Infact, this was a trend that lasted all week, wherever we visited and whatever our request, the staff were fantastic. from the redcoat who returned our lost little lass to us in the skyline to the attendants in the pool who not only helped us after our little lad slipped in the toilets, but then spent five minutes chatting with my son and always had a thumbs up for him when we returned.
All in all, the week was fantastic, there is so much to do on site, that we didnt manage to fit half of it in. Yes, somethings are pricey and there are arcades everywhere, but no one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to spend. We managed to fill the entire week with activities, meals out everynight, drinks and gifts for a little under £400. By no means a bargain, but no rip-off either!
Evening entertainment varied in quality, with a bit of a lull in the middle of the week, however kids loved it all and The Breifcase Blues Brothers had all of us up and dancing the night away.
For all families with kids under 10, I highly recommend a trip to butlins. there really is so much to do (most of it free) that we are already looking at a short break again next year, just so we can try and squeeze it all in!
Thank you butlins for a holiday the whole family will remember.

I have recently stayed at the Butlins resort in Skegness. During my time at Butlins it very quickly became apparent that the glossy standards that appear in adverts on television or online are no were near the reality of actually being there. My family and I stayed in the silver accomodation, although this seamed more like a standard room with just a microwave added to make it look like silver accomodation. The chalets were filthy, the floor sufaces, sofa's and carpets were sticky, the beds were rock hard. Whilst Silver acccomodation is supposed to have daily room service, with replacement bath mat, loo rolls and cleaning services, it turns out that if you are self catering this doesn't apply, even though these services are advertised boldly in the brochures, yet the lack of this service is not stated anyway in the brochures.
Although there was plenty to do during the day most of it was for young children from the ages of 5-7 years, whilst this is understandable as youngsters need to be entertained during the course of the day, it must be pointed out that nearly all activities sutaible for teens or adults are very highly priced, e.g Four wheel bikes cost £11 with a futher £10 deposit for just 30 minutes and bowling is around £5 per person, these are just 2 examples. Whilst a few activites were free e.g swimming, everything else that had to be paid for, be it shopping or leisure activities is prohibitivley expensive.
The night time entertainment (if you can call it that), leaves a lot to be desired, adult entertainment is constantly interupted by tiny tots activities. The entertainment largely consists of poor comics, amateurish entertainers occasionally with the odd good act thrown in.
For the high price of these holidays, a much higher standard of service should be given, especially as we are led to believe by the adverts that these holidays are vitually all inclusive, when the reality is that this is simply not the case.
I can't see our family returning to butlins again.

I have just returned from butlins in skegness i went with my girlfriend, and our 3 boys 17,13 and 20months and i have to say we all didnt want to leave, there is somthing to do all day everyday for every one. My little one really enyoed it and so did the older ones. The site itself is amazing the programme starts at 9am in the morning and last orders are at 00.30, all the staff are very friendly and helpful, accomadation was more then homely. The nightly shows are very good as well you have a choice of 3 venues.the beach is great we all loved it. The fair is good u have to pay a little for the go carts and inflateabul slides. There is an indoor play area which is free and is very good.the arcades are massive loads of choice. The food there is very nice u have got a large choice and is reasonable price. All i can say is ill be going back with my family next year. I would highly recommend butlins to any 1 especially families.

It was my first visit to Butlins with my grandchildren and what a fantastic holiay it was. We has a Gold Apartment which was immaculate and far better than I ever expected. The bedding and towels provided were all beautiful and clean as was the apartment on arrival.
The food in the Yacht Club restaurant was out of this world with such a great choice of dinner menu each day.The staff were exceptional, helpful and very obliging and provided a high chair, wet wipe and bib for baby at each meal. Baby food provided as well. The entertainment was great and the Sleeping Beauty Panto was so professionally done. What a great place to take your children, the free rides for the little ones was an added bonus as was the swimming pool which was very child friendly. I would always recommend it to any one with children and will not hesitate to go back there. Well done to all the staff at Butlins Skegness.

We have been going too butlins now for the last 6 years and we love it we always go in june the last 2 years weather sunburning this year was not as hot but still nice we have been in a silver star chalet next to the sun and moon(expensive to eat and very small portions)the chalet which was really nice and clean and in a very good spot. We have also done 7 nights in a gold star caravan which we love the best out off the 2 we always go for a caravan in the populars or dunes as it is a short walk to all the things too do. Butlins is like marmite love it or hate it there is something to do for all ages things we love the baths and the market a must go place when you are at butlins shows in the tent are fab for the little ones The staff are friendly we never go out until 9 o clock on the evening but if you want a good seat in the pub you need to go early the Reds is fantastic child friendly good lightning too see the kids and a really good show to watch this is the 1st year we have been too the beach its long and the sand is nice can't wait to go next year.....

As we arrived our first thoughts wasn't great as the entrance was a mini fair ground. We arrived at 12:30pm and we had to wait until 4pm till we could check in but we did know so we couldn't complain. It was a long time to wait until we could check in so we just went on the arcades and had a quiet drink. We then checked in and we stayed in turtle quay apartment room, Im glad we payed extra to stay in the silver rooms as the standard apartments didn't look great. The room was clean and the shower was well working, the only problem was the bed as it was a camping bed but we didn't struggle to sleep.
It is very expensive to stay there as not much is free, for example; go karts, arcades, bowling, pool etc... but the swimming baths stayed open till around 5:30ish and the arcades closed late. Our favourite was the sports bar which had bowling and pool, however, the bowling price was £5 each for one game and if there's only 2 of you then it doesn't last that long.
Overall, we had a good time but i don't think we could stay there for longer than 3 nights :)
