70's weekend was Cool, Fab and Groovy
from Loubi Lou
Just back from a great weekend at Butlins. Lat time I visited a place like this I was 6 and it was terrible! now 25 I had my reservations.... and was pleasently surprised!. We were a group of 8 "Ladies" aged from 22 to 52. The Silver accommodation was great, a double room twin room which were both clean with fresh linen. The Bathroom was small fine, the shower was not the largest in the world but was fine. The lounge kitchen was great with a 2 and 3 seater leather sofa and everything you needed. Entertainment was fab, Friday night was quieter than saturday but the shows were great on both evenings. We found the guests to be friendly and everyone was out for a fun night. The 70's fancy dress really made the weekend! about 80% of the entire place was dressed up!. We went off site for a walk along the beach which was nice. Minehead was cheap and cheerful with the usal fish and chips, candyfloss and rock!. Would recommend The Hairy Dog pub about 10mins along the high street (past the railway carriage etc) for a great Sunday Carvery, its only £6.95 and the selection is fab!. Get there early, it does get busy. So all in all we would recommend this and would definately go again!.... just beware of the seagulls!!!!!!
Stay on the Caravan park
from A TripAdvisor Member
I would never stay in any Butlins accommodation as it is dated, often dirty and cold. Even the Premier accommodation is not good. When I discovered the caravan park on a visit 2 years ago, that was it, no more grotty accommodation to contend with. The best part of the caravan park is Lakeside Crecent, which is a small crescent to the left of the Highwayman Pub. It is quiet, peaceful and the views over the lake are wonderful. Ducks, Geese and Swans come to visit you. You hardly hear a sound at night and you don't hear any noisy people walking past your window. Very few cars drive by. It's wonderful!! We now book every year. I would highly recommend it as you feel 'away from it all' but the facilities are close at hand if you want to use them. The caravan we stayed in can be found at www.butlins-minehead.wanadoo.co.uk and the service we recieved was second to none. Thank you Jenny for having such a great caravan on a superb location :)
Very tired and tatty

I booked a long weekend in May for my husband ,myself and our three year old grandson staying in Silver Accomodation , half board. On arrival we had to park miles away from Reception and had a long walk to get keys so I went alone . On entering our accomodation I can only describe it as tatty. The sheets and covers on the bed were not long enough so all through the night you were continuosly trying to cover yourselves up. The bathroom is tiny with only a toilet, sink and luke warm shower so only one person can fit in at a time ( and what three year old's will take a shower ). The paint is peeling and the accomodation is generally run down. The food is awful mass produced and luke warm and is like a free for all every meal time which in the end gets on your nerves ( are people worried it is going to run out ). Most of the rides in the funfair were shut so we were forced to pay to keep our Grandson entertained. The entertainent was like an amateur production ( what are these skyliners ?? ) and was the same show every night. We went to attend the Bob the Builder tea party for which we paid extra and they crammed so many kids in that it was a nightmare and the tea being a roll, crisps and a drink. Best thing was the rucksack !! The noise of a night with un supervised kids coming back to the chalets at 1am onwards had to be heard to be believed with some opposite that thought it was funny to have them climbing , swearing in and out the windows all night. I think some parents go there and let there kids run riot so as long as they have a good time it does not matter about any one else or what there kids are getting up to. The indoor pool the water was cold. We left on Monday tired out, in need of a good meal and feeling that my £ 250.00 plus and I mean plus had been a waste of money. Footnote. Most of our holidays as kids were spent at all the Butlins resorts so I feel I can speak from past experience. Then the accomation was clean, the food although you had little choice was served to you at a table and was hot and edible. The entertainment was first class, shows etc and the large funfair was free with decent rides. You paid for a holiday and then most things after that were free, not any more. There are no competitions so no programme of events but I supposed left on your own you spend more money instead of the entertainment being free. People could relax and the staff at Butlins cared about you and made sure you had a good holiday. Now all the Entertainment is crammed into the Skyline tent and people have nowhere else to go. And yes I will never go back

We paid extra to stay in a Silver Bungalow for 7 nights. This was our 3rd visit to Butlins in 3 years and is going to be our last. The allocated accommodation was shabby and dreary looking and was in need of a complete refurbishment. We asked to be moved but were told the resort was full no other apartments were available. On return to the bungalow one afternoon, the place was crawling with ants and flying insects which had got through a hole in the wall behind the sofa. An employee came and sprayed the affected area and left a few ant traps/repellents which seemed to work. But worse was to come. One night at 11.30am while watching TV in the lounge area, we spotted a small mouse scurrying around our bungalow and going into the room where our children were sleeping. We called Butlins Security who immediately arranged to move us to another bungalow. From their reaction it was apparent that such incidents had happened before in these bungalows. We complained and were offered a £100 voucher towards the next holiday there. Further representations led them to increase to voucher to £300 which I refused. Since then Butlins have not responded to further letters from us. Our kids (aged 6 and 5) liked the kids play areas and the facilities, but who would want to take their kids to a place where mice run around their living space.

holiday from hell
from Beenie
Went to butlins minehead for May half term, took my teenage daughter and friend. Accomodation was not together the girls were five blocks away. Had basic accomodaton which on arrival had no coat hangers, toilet rolls and only one bedside cabinet. Bathroom floor was very wet. This was sorted very quickly. Then the hell began. Unbeknowns to us there was a football tournament in the town, and all the kids were staying at butlins for the weekend. We had the unfortunate experience of being across from a large crowd from Wales who parental responsibility was very lacking. First night woken up early hours of the morning. Lots of noise, girls screaming and window being smashed. Reported it to reception next morning. That afternooon couldnt catch up on sleep as they were playing football between the chalets with a leather ball smashing into door and roof. Complained further. That night woken up early hours again, babies in adjoining rooms woken and crying, their parents stressed. Security came it quietened down. Back to reception next morning, offered a room to get a couple of hours sleep instead of sorting the problem. Same in the afternoon, I went out screaming and shouting, it quietend down security called. In resataurant that evening, we were "entertained with singing, I had had enough by then. That evening Adults joined in the noise making singing at top of voices. Security called again, so much for the extra security we had been promised. We were supposed to be there for a week, we left on the Monday, exhausted, mentally and physically. Still arguing with Butlins re compensation. First Time in years Ive been will never go back.
basic but kids loved it

We sayed on a last minute 4 night break in silver half board appartment. Mum, Dad, 3 year old and 1 year old. Fairly good bargain at just over £300. Basically you should go with low expectations and then be pleasantly surprised! Do not go expecting 4 star luxury if staying in Silver or standard. The food was average. Most is fried, processed pap. You wouldn't want it all the time but a week of fryup's is quite nice. I must praise the serving staff who were all east european (polish I think). They were excellent even with the scumbags who thought that they could be a rude as they like to the staff! Compare that to the English redcoats who were incredibly stuck up and more intersted in chatting between themselves than to the kids. We used the nursery facility which had good and bad points. They had some work experience girls in there and I noticed at one point there were 6 small children in one room being looked after by two 15 year old girls! However the baby sitting facility was fantastic and quite reaonable at £6.50 per hour for up to two children. They also run an evening session in the nursery at £10 per child from 7:30 to 11. Threre ae 3 areas for entertainment in the evening, one of which is strictly non-smoking. The entertainment was pretty good although some of the magic shows were more like a litte britain sketch! My one complaint is that everywhere is very smoky. There is no policy to keep the skyline smoke free and the staff put ashtrays in the supposedly non-smoking zones. Minehead itself has an excellent clean and sandy beach. Highlight of our stay was the steam train ride which is well worth doing. As I said at the start, go with an open mind and low expectations. You get what you pay for and if you want cheap family fun then it's fine.
great free entertainment

We stayed at butlins minehead in may 2004.We stayed in a silver apartment half board. The free pool was an instant hit with my two children and the daily entertainment in the sky pavillion was very good ,we even seen a few tv personalities performing. The food was very good and in plentiful supply which also included drinks although the dinning room did get very busy so we found it best to be at the door when they opened.Overall a very enjoyable stay for adults aswell as children with minehead town centre a stroll along the lovely clean beach.Only one critizism we had ants in the kitchen for most of the four days we were there and even though we complained nothing was done. Apart from that we would definately go again.
Butlins Minehead Silver Self Catering Chalet

My fiance and decided to stay here as part of the SUN £9.50 holiday offer. It ended up costing approx. £80 for the two of us for three nights with a silver upgrade, linen, gas + elec. and entertainment. All in all the accomodation was of a satisfactory standard, it was clean, moderately decorated and spacious (four adults would be able to live here for three days). The silver chalets are in 3 storey blocks so you might want to request the ground floor when booking. There was a 14" TV, a Microwave, an ironing board in the kitchen/living area. There were two bedrooms one double, one twin. The bathroom had a sink, toilet and a not very powerful shower, however, some of the paintwork was looking a bit "flakey" around the locked cupboard in the bathroom. I think that this was where the water storage heater was kept. The heating in the chalet was economy 7 heaters which we had to keep on turning down as it made the chalet very warm when turned up to the max! The entertainment was excellent, the weekend that we chose happened to be an 80s revival weekend so there were the usual tribute bands (madness, queen, tom jones) and there were a few originals (Aswad, ABC, Sonia). There are about 3 or 4 venues within the complex all of varying size with well stocked bars and varied entertainment. Some of the bar staff don't know how to pour a pint of guiness though! Also recommend you get to your chose venue early as the ample seating does get taken up quickly. Incidentally Sonia stayed in the chalet opposite us so we "accidentally" bumped in to her before her performance and asked for photos! Minehead is near the border between somerset and north devon and there is plenty of places of interest worth visiting although I recommend you take an experienced driver with you as all the twists, turns and hills around Exmoor national park can be a bit tricky as the gradients are rather steep in places. The swimming pool at Butlins is excellent too, you will need 30p for the changing room lockers but this is quickly forgotten as the slides and wave machine are enough to satisfy the most hardcore of sea dogs! You will have to queue for the slides though and the Master Blaster can be up to 45mins queuing time unless a kiddy gets stuck mid-slide and the queue can be more than an hour! I queued for about 30mins and it was worth the wait! Our last day was spent sampling the free fun-fair and as everyone had gone home we were the only people on the rides! I will definitely visit Butlins again if I can get the prices offered by Butlins or the SUN.
Just back from a 3 night weekend break. Booked the silver room, still basic but the whole weekend cost so little you get what you pay for. I would say it was a very cold weekend and the rooms are not heated on your arrival, its left to you to put the 1 heater on and it took... more
