La Principessa Villa
This gem of a medieval town grew up on its silk industry in the 12th and 13th centuries. It boasts a fine cathedral, many Gothic and Romanesque churches and a piazza which originated as a Roman amphitheatre. With Pisa, Florence and the coast all a short drive away, Lucca makes a good base for exploring this lovely area so car hire is highly recommended.

Winding up along a 'white' road towards Podere Consani, through lush countryside, you emerge from chestnut woods on to a sunny plateau topped with a charming group of honey-coloured stone buildings set on the edge of a grassy orchard, with the Tuscan plain spread far below.
