the best and worst of bognor

Dec 2011, sam

i am a housekeeper from a large hotel in bournemouth .
since having 3 children we cannot afford to go abroad so have been going to butlins for 8yrs now.
if your looking for a cheap holiday with lots to do ,this is it,if you are staying in an appartment ,you may as well go standard as they are all the same except bigger tele's etc
the silver plus rooms with terrace are nice as you get a place for the kids to play, but as a gold card hold holder i personally prefer to stay in the shoreline hotel in a patio room as you get a lovely bit of grass for your kids to play on outside your patio.
the ocean rooms are very cramped with little storage and balconies that if it rains or someone spills a drink from above you get wet,a definate no for me.
the place to eat is the sun and moon pub, great value home cook food and puds.
all in all very good value for money

After reading some of the reviews I was shocked, My family have been going to Butlins (mainly Bognor regis, we went to minehead once but its too far away)from when I was a 3 year old, and I have had fun every single time, we used to always stay in the silver accommodation (which always seemed to be clean and tidy) until the new hotels were built, last year (for the first time) we stayed in the Ocean hotel, the room and basically the whole hotel was spotless, the red coats and other staff were friendly and entertaining, also even though I'm almost 14 I still found it really fun, as did my sister who was 15 at the time. One of the best parts was the 3 wheeled bikes, with a steering wheel like a car, we spent about 3 of the 4 days on them because they were so fun, you have to rent them though. Another good thing was the DVD rental service in the hotel, as the childrens room has a flat screen tv (and the adults room) we watched films in bed, its free to rent them but you pay about 10 pounds deposit which as long as you return the DVD in the same condition, you get back. The funfair is good but its definitely better for younger kids as some of the rides seem quite boring now, the dodgers and the high hat (I think thats what its called) were the best rides and as all the rides are free its great. Again, the entertainment is better for young kids in the inside room but the outside one is as good for both older and younger people. The swimming pool is ok but not as fun as it used to be when I was little. Over all I think butlins is a great place to go on holiday, for all ages really as my parents enjoyed it to. Also the resorts spar shop is handy as we were always going to it late at night to buy ice cream, its either 24 hour or closes late. We are going back to Butlins, Bognor regis with my grandparents(instead of my parents)in 2 days and I cant wait to be back there. ALso the food is very nice, last time we only had the hotel room, this time we've booked breakfast at the kaleidoscope restraunt in the hotel, as the food there is a really nice buffet.

  • Advice: Use the 3 wheel bikes, take a laptop as theres free wifi and it gives you something to do at night

Why have you changed Butlins so much? You are Butlins by name only! It used to be an all inclusive holiday for families to enjoy. The only time you put your hand in your pocket was for drinks in the evening or treats. Everything was free. Now it is nothing but a money making racket ! There used to something for all the family to do at all times of the day. It is boring for adults during the daytime !People walk around aimlessly all day long.Exciting activities for children, especially teenagers cost a fortune!!
Where have all the traditional Butlins attractions gone?
Outdoor pool, Gaiety theatre ( ballroom and band) skating rink, Donkey derby,Wrestling,Betting shops,Mona rail,Pig and Whistle,Sports day,Boating lake,Beaver club,Talent competitions,Bonny Baby,Lovely legs,Glamorous grandmother, knobbly knees, Mother and child,Father and child. plus many more. Put the fun/attraction back into Butlins for all the family young and old.

  • Advice: Bring back some Butlins traditional attractions, they are fun for all ages, they are timeless attractions.

My family have been going to Butlins every year for about 12 years as my daughter (now 16yrs old) absolutely loved it. However, each year something else has gone from the entertainment. First my daughter was distraught when Noddy was replaced with butlins bear. Our most favourite thing was the games room where you could play table tennis for free and poole for 50p. This was closed down and the only table tennis moved to the swimming pool gallery which was too hot to be able to play. Next the outdoor pool was taken to make way for the second hotel on site. Reds was also mainly closed down - there used to always be two main show to choose from. The shows are also repeated from year to year so very few new shows to watch, plus they close earlier. This year they have closed the Irish pub which was a place my daughter loved as the same characters would turn up and sing terrible karioki. Finally, the price increased each year way above inflation - my first holiday cost £500 this year it would have cost £1500! So more people (two extra hotels) less free entertainment for a lot more money - so no, I won't be going back.

good entertainment, poor accomodation
7 / 10
Jun 2011, eyes

stayed in oyster bay (silver accomodation) plenty of room, small shower room, dirty pans and cutlery in kitchen, overall condition a bit run down and very dusty.
1/2 board food selection very good (and we are vegitarian) lots of choice,
entertainment, lots to do for the first 2 days run out of things to do with our two young boys.
funfair could do with a few more rides.
swimming pool good, and eavening entertainment very good.
too many arcade machines.
you need to pay extra for some of the other activities.
Red coats very helpful and friendly.
we think butlins is something you can do with the children once.

Just got back from a weeks holiday at Butlins on Bognor Regis site. I would have to say that this was the BEST holiday i have ever had! Unfortunately we had to use the First Aid services but they were so helpful couldn't fault a thing! My niece who I was with was really looking forward to seeing Lazy Town and they even brought her up a Lazy Town book up which was really nice!! Couldn't fault any of the holiday and am defiantly going back SOON!!!

what we think of butlins, bognor regis

We go to butlins, bognor regis at least once a year and we've stayed all over the place in chalets and the shoreline hotel. With two adults and two children, 4/2 years old, with various likes and dislikes we have never had to complain about lack of entertainment for all of us, in fact we usually run out of time before we can do everything. We've had problems in the past regarding accommodation but the staff have worked hard to put it right as quickly as possible. Love the atmosphere and attractions, always come home tired but happy. Only gripes we have: chalet accommodation doesn't take into account toddlers and the hospitality trays/kettle/door handles are too low down for their safety, nappies in the shop are knowingly way overpriced taking advantage of mums/babies who can't do without them, restaurants need healthier menus and the character lunch isn't value for money. On the plus side the hotel is fantastic and so is every thing else. Going again in 2 weeks and none of us can wait!!!!

Not long been back from butlins bognar for christmas stayed in the shore line hotel great nice staff everything fine.Untill christmas dinner we were not seated in the hotel for christmas dinner we were told that thats where we would be eating as we had paid for hotel and food all in. so we were eating our christmas dinnere in the confrence center is was done up with christmas decs nice. here comes the food 5 course meal melon fine soup ok then the main course processed turkey, half frozen carrots, frozon stuffing frozon spuds frozon brussels sasauges not cooked there were 16 in our group cost of break £5.500 you think we would of had a fresh christmas dinner not even real turkey. not even a bottle of wine on the table with your meal this was not what we signed up for we belived we would have been given a time slot for a christmas dinner. There were 330 people in the sitting for christmas dinner not the staffs fault we were used as ginipigs they had never done it this way before and the childrens drink machines were turned off at dinner time.Ihave been butlins before but never at christmas and usally the childrens drink machines are on during dinner time because thats what you have paid for but not this time so be sure before you go you know whta you are paying for and what youy will get for your money. can not fault butlins apart from this awfull christmas dinner that may i add is supposed to be the most importaint dinner for you and your family.
