It was fine
from Belgie
We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights. I have to say it was a good deal considering the price. The location is great. Nice neighbourhood, lots of nice small restaurants and diners around. Nice breakfast place around the corner and a good pub below the hotel. Close to the Central Park and metro stations. Nice streets to walk around. Perhaps we were lucky that the renovation works and re-decoration in the hotel were just completed. Although the room was small, everything was clean and bathroom was brand new. We got the room service everyday. Friendly and helpful stuff as well. I have to say that I was very nerveous at the beginning as some reviews here were negative but it turned out to be allright for us. Now some down points: We stayed in the room right next to the reception desk. So it can be tricky early in the morning with phones ringing. The windows were looking at the side street and indeed the isolation was not very good. But hey, it is not a five star hotel. People were doing their bests to serve and we appreciated it. So, if you are looking for a good deal this can be your choice with its small and cosy rooms and perfect location.
Cheap but not very good.

We stayd in this hotel for two nights during our eight nights visit in New York. The location of this hotel was great and it was cheap. But the room was small and unplaned. The air conditioner were placed at the top of the bed, next to the pillow. We couldn't have it on during the night because we couldn't sleep becouse of the noice it made, this led to a very warm nights and a lack of sleep. The noice from the streets was as we actully sleppt on the street. Overall it´s a nice hotel if youre staying a night or two.
Basic accomodation

Basic walkup hostel type accomodation. Shared bathrooms were clean with door locks. We had double bed in small (4m x 2.5m) , clean, room. Sheets and towels okay, and clean. Mattress was comfortable. No deadbolt on door, but they control access from street, and at top of stairs. Steep walk-up to floors, no elevator. We ran clothes lines and hand washed clothes in room sink. We posted do-not-disturb notice, so I don't know if they clean room daily or not. Air conditioner was very noisy, but room was otherwise quiet. Looks like they do regular maintenance, and are trying to improve condition. Some staff was fairly useless, others were helpful and friendly. Location is good for museums and Central Park in safe neighborhood. One street to west are a couple of grocery markets. Lots of restaurants around. Would probably stay there again.
Nice small budget hotel

Stayed at the Amsterdam Inn for three nights Oct. 2004. Small rooms, ok - but after all, it's NYC! The location is great for anyone looking for something quiet (if you can call any place in NYC quiet...) and near Central Park. It's also obviously less expensive than anything comparable in Downtown (which is about 10min. by the Subway). Biggest plus: Hotel shares a building with the Westside Brewing Company - great location for beer-lovers... have fun!
worked out just fine for me

i stayed here for three nights last summer. i reserved a room w/private bath, and i think that's the way to go unless you want to feel like you're in a hostel. yes, you should be prepared to carry your own luggage up three or four flights of stairs, and the stairwells are kind of gross, but my room was perfectly clean and the bed was fine. i like the upper west side location-- as a female traveling alone, it's a neighborhood i feel safe in.
Value for money hotel

Stopped in this hotel for 4 nights. It is easy to get to using the tube, and I used public transport to get back to JFK airport from this hotel. The hotel was clean but in need of a bit of decorating. It was looking a bit tired. My room was cleaned every day and the bathrooms were clean. You could borrow a hair dryer from reception. The room I stayed in was very warm but I had no problems with noise. The location was great if you wanted to visit local resturants. There is a large cinema near by too. It was near to central park and the museums. On the Sunday there was craft / antique fair going on in the local school which looked like a regular thing. This is prob. a good hotel for couples or if you want to be away from all the noise of NY traffic. It is near a good tube station so you can easily get to Time Square etc.. Good if you want somewhere cheap to stay which is safe and clean.
Great place, great price

This was my 2nd stay at this hotel. When I first stayed, in Feb 2005, I was on the 1st floor, facing Amsterdam Av, and had to leave the window open because the heating had no controls. This was quite noisy. This time, we were on the 3rd floor facing the rear of the building, the heating seemed lower, and the noise was not a problem. I can also understand why someone with 3 heavy bags might not like this hotel. However, we loved it. The staff was so helpful, finding info for us, lending us a hairdryer, etc. A great hotel in a convenient location for a great price.
Great Location!!

My daughter and I stayed here for four nights and found it to be a very clean and well kept hotel, they are doing some renovations now which should give it a nicer look. We had room 204 with a private bath which we would recommend, it was on the second floor and was very clean. It was a great location and was just five minutes from the subway. Our only drawback was the steep stairs as you enter the building which make getting large suitcases up a challenge, so try and get the first floor or second.
A good budget-conscious choice

We stayed in NYC in mid December and found the Amsterdam Inn very pleasant for the price. We stayed in a room w/ a private bath (No. 103) and it was quite nice; the furnishings were new and attractive and the bathroom was particularly clean, roomy and stylish. We also found the staff very friendly and helpful. Some minor problems are that the heating pipes are a bit noisy and there's no way to regulate the temperature in the rooms (it got quite hot and dry). Overall, I believe it is a very good bargain.
great budget place to stay

After reading the previous reviews about the hotel I was not feeling very positive about the hotel before we arrived. After staying there I would recommend the hotel as a decent, cheap place to stay in a very good location. Based on 76th street the hotel is only a five min walk to the subway at 72nd street and so travelling around Manhattan is not a problem. When we arrived the check in was smooth and the man on the desk helpful. We were given a room on the top floor and to be honest it wasn't too big a deal as we are young-ish spring chickens but older guests may find the stairs tiring. On first impressions the room was small but it was just big enough to store our 2 largish bags and all our chrismas shopping for five days. The double bed was comfy(and I am fussy when it comes to beds) and we slept well each night-although we were exhausted every night after our travels. We didn't experience any noise worse than to be expected when staying in New York-our room was at the back though. There was no wardrobe but instead a rail with about 6 hangers and a chest of drawers and bedside table to store belongings. We also had a sink in the room which was good seeing as we were sharing a bathroom. The bathroom we used was fine,it was clean and modern and after mastering how to get the right temp with the shower, using the bathroom was not a problem. There was always hot water and we never had to wait to use the shower, there was also a bath on one of the lower floors. The maid service was good and we always came back to a clean room with fresh towels. Girls be warned though, that we didn't have a hairdryer in our room but we borrowed one from reception when we needed it. Also the room tended to get very hot from the radiator so we did tend to sleep with the window open, but we felt quite safe. Two places to visit food wise are Crumbs, just across the road, a little bakery serving the most gorgeous cakes and desserts and The utopia restaurant where we often found ourselves having breakfast (across the street from the 72nd st subway- get the choc chip pancakes). So overall I would recommend the hotel and I say this in the knowledge that I have travelled extensively all over the world staying in hostels to 5 star hotels- just expect what you are paying for-if you want a five star room then you need to pay for it,if you are looking for a clean,no frills room in a good location then that is what you will get-remember you get what you pay for!!
The rooms are not as big as expected and the view from our room was nothing special. However the prices are competitive, really, and the hotel is quite clean. There are good transport connections to all parts of the city worth visiting. Staff: young and friendly. Ask for... more
