I usually go traveling searching for a great, pristine beaches and always try to experience its local culture. I went to this resort because it's a gift-unfortunately it turned out unpleasant! I should've known it is a place for old people as we arrive I know it is not the... more

We went for 10 day relaxing holiday at the Pestana Dom Joao 2 (Alvor) but on day three it was anything but relaxing as we arrived back from a stroll into Alvor for an evening meal (lots of very good restaurants) to find that our room had been burgled (the door forced open... more

This is a lovely hotel almost on the beach. The free pool towels were a bonus. The only downside to this hotel was the evening entertainment which was dire. 15 minutes walk away in the village of Alvor there are lots of bars and restaurants and if you shop around you can... more

I recently visited the Dom Joao II with my husband (42), father (71) and my 4 year old son. We thought the hotel was very well presented and very clean. The grounds were well tended and a pleasure to walk around. We had been advised there was a playground for children (also... more

The whole hotel is about to close for the winter for a total refurbishment, but apart from being a little dated the decor was fine. The hotel was clean, the staff pleasant and the buffet breakfast was more than adequate. We were there making up our lunch rolls and filling... more

We had a fantastic holiday in Alvor at this hotel. Although the hotel decor is a little dated the facilities are good and everything is clean and well kept. The best thing is that the staff were very friendly and helpful. The deputy manager and chef really went all out... more

lovely holiday
We were transferred to this hotel by Pestana Porches praia as they were closing for refurbishment. Our accomadation (as we were a party of 6) was in one of the Villas linked to the Pestana Atlantico. The villas are great, very spacious. Each bedroom had an ensuite bathroom. There was a kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine although it could had done with a proper size hob and oven. The area was very quite and the restaurant for breakfast had a wonderful view, right on the beach. We could use all the facilities of the Dom Joao Hotel next door (just a short walk through the gardens and mini golf) which meant the kids could go to the kids club (free of charge) and my dad could learn Portugese, part of the varied activities laid on by the hotel. The hotel also put on live music and small shows in the evening. The beach which this resort is right on top of is really lovely and clean with loungers for hire if you want to. Also the hotel resort complex is within walking distance of Alvor, with loads of cafes, shops and restaurants, even with small children in tow.All in all we had a fantastic holiday, the hotel had far more than we expected. It was very clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast was also very nice and for the money we paid for this holiday it was excellent value for money. The pools were not heated, apparently they heat them from November, which made them a bit chilly this time of year. The sea was warm though so we could still go for a swim. We would stay in the villas again.Thank you to all the hardworking staff at Pestana for a memorable holiday.
Great location, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Not state-of-the-art in building terms, perhaps, but beautifully placed alongside Alvor beach. Rooms are clean, air-conditioned, but perhaps a little basic, with no tea/coffee facilities and rather aging furnishings. A walk of 15 minutes or so brings you to Alvor itself (basic shopping, numerous restaurants and a small harbour area) and there is a courtesy bus to Portimao as well as scheduled bus services to Portimao & Lagos etc from right outside the hotel. The staff are efficient and friendly without being overly effusive, and the dining - buffet-style - was of a consistently good standard, in very pleasant surroundings. The main bar has a stage area for entertainments and a big-screen for sports TV etc. There are outdoor and indoor pools, a pool bar and a beach-side cafe serving drinks and snacks. The beach is wide and clean, though the sea can be vigorous at times, and lifeguards were in evidence until late afternoon. Excellent spot for general relaxation or a beach holiday - less so for nightlife or youthful exuberance! Rooms on the seaward side are better, if you have a choice, as those facing landward overlook the hotel car-park and the road beyond.
Decent hotel, lots of facilities.
Decent hotel about ten minute walk into Alvor. Situated right on the beach with plenty of activities available in and around the hotel. Staff were pleasant and helpful, hotel did feel a little bit dated and most of the guests were elderly. Room was basic but clean. We paid extra for a sea view and this was well worth it as other rooms overlooked car park. Alvor itself is lovely and well suited to couples of all ages. Lots of great little bars and lots of wonderful restaurants. Would definately go back and would have no real qualms about staying in this hotel again.
Clean, friendly, brilliant!!
Went to this hotel with my wife and 5 year old boy in July 2005. You will read reviews that the hotel decor is 20-30 years old, it's not. The decor is a tad "seventies", but it's not old and hanging off the wall, they just seem to have chosen to replace it with the same naff design. Anyway, on to the holiday. The hotel really is a very nice place to be, get a sea view if you can, the land views are dull. We found the hotel to be VERY clean. We hired a fridge for our stay because of our boy (drinks, bananas etc.) cost was around 3 Euros per day. Rooms have TV's, and the choice of channels is limited but you do get a few including Sky news and the cartoon network (great for the kids at the end of the day!) We stayed B&B, and to be honest I would not want anything else. The food was very nice, but it's just a 10 minute walk to the pretty fishing harbour/village of Alvor, where we went nearly every night to enjoy the wide variety of restaurants and watch the sun set. Pool was lovely, big, and with a childrens pool to the side of it, and if you prefer there are other pools within the complex, including an indoor one. There were 2 main restaurants that we saw; One by the pool that we used for lunch most days, fare was what you would expect, sandwiches, burgers, hotdogs, pizza, pasta, chicken, fish etc. The other was in the hotel where breakfast and evening meals were served. Breakfast was good and varied but we didn't eat there at night, preferring to stroll out to Alvor village instead, (not that the food was bad or anything, but we don't like the "buffet" affair where you grab a plate and serve yourself). Plus there are cafes on the beach. Hotel is right on the beach, and a lovely clean beach it is. Beach/pool towels are available free on a daily basis. There's a food shop on the complex, it sells pretty much all you would want, but it's pricey, the shops in Alvor (10 minute walk) are cheaper. If you want a bigger town, get a cab to Portimau (sp?) for about 6 Euros, that should satisy anyone wanting a clothes shop. The staff are very nice and friendly, and it's well suited for prams and/or wheelchairs. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay, we could have done with a bigger room, but that's our fault, we paid for a twin bed, and then got them to stick in a single bed for our boy, plus a fridge (there was not much room left!) Very clean, fantastic location, smiling friendly staff... Lovely!
What a view!
This hotel is all about LOCATION! Fantastic! Direct level access onto the most beautiful 3-mile beach of soft golden sand. The hotel does look a little tired in a few places, but we booked via Alpha Rooms and got a good price. We had a stunning view over the beach from our balcony, so we recommend paying the extra for the sea-veiw. With very helpful staff, lovely restaurants in nearby Alvor, a number of pools including one sea-water one that is heated off-season, kids club, and nightly entertainment, this hotel gave us a lovely holiday. We will go back again!
Four star what a joke.
Booked this hotel with Thomas Cook on a two week package deal that cost quite a bit. Was very disapointed with the overall standard and quality of the hotel. Rooms were very basic and sad and just generally felt that the place needed total refurbishment. Room looked out onto hotel car park and was woken by coaches coming and going throughout the night. Balcony was very small and over looked by all other rooms, felt uncomfortable about sitting out. requested to move rooms and reception staff rather rude and stated would have to pay a lot more money for sea view. Pool area also was disapointing sun loungers and umbrellas had seen better days, block paving around pool also looked sad, broken furniture also stacked by pool. Food was okay and some staff were very friendly. Complained to Thomas Cook rep day after arrival and was moved to the Delfim Hotel two days later which was a further 1/2 a mile away from Alvor. Wish I had know about trip advisor before booking.
Bit dated and in need of a facelift but otherwise good
Just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel. The rooms and hotel are very old fashioned and are in need of much renovation. However, the postion right on the beach is lovely and the heated pool a bonus. Breakfast was OK, the usual buffet selection but the beans (my favourite!) were of poor quality. The pool bar is lovely but seemed very expensive to drink there. Also a fair walk into Alvor (20 minutes on a very busy road) although there was a courtesty bus but it didnt run at night when we needed it. All in all would stay here again.
Loved the Dom Joao II Village
I cannot fault this hotel, staff friendly and helpful. Bedrooms were cleaned every day, I do agree that we could have done with a fridge, kettle etc. Hotel is right on the gorgeous Alvor beach. Be warned you will be charged for sunbeds on the beach whereas towels are free for use around the superb pool at hotel. We were there for Euro 2004, what a fabulous atmosphere in Alvor, Portuguese people are wonderful, can't wait to go back next year. This hotel is definitely worth booking.
Good, but not four star
This is a nice hotel, right on a lovely big beach, however take its 4 star rating with a pinch of salt. The hotel itself is nice, clean and tidy and the room and the same, but it lacked some basic room facilities (like a kettle, cup & glasses, etc.) that would have made some difference. Also the hotel itself as well as the rooms are looking extremely dated. The hotel was opened in 1972 and it really does show from the decor. Having said that the staff where all excellent, the food was great and the overall service in all ascepts was superb, and as for the location well I could not fault that, but I have stayed in 3 stars hotels that had better room facilities.
Suprt food and service
On the very edge of town and two minutes from a glorious sandy beach - the hotel has excellent accomodation (prefer rooms 103, 105, 107 and 109) with huge verandha and super view. The staff are so helpful and friendly. The food is excellent - indeed sister hotel holiday makers were spending the evening eating with us. The cabaret NewYork New York was fabulous - sorry we missed Moulin Rouge cabaret but the satff have agreed to send us pictures - if you are going to do a tour visit the local travel agent and book a tour of the five towns it is great value and very worthwhile. There are down sides to the stay - the hotel restaurant is not disable friendly and phone calls/Internet was expensive - suggest you use the local phone kiosk and Internet cafe on the hill (inforarte.com). Weather can be breezy but overall we really enjoyed our stay. Long terms stayers favourite too.
