Amazing
I stayed at the ficus hotel end of july to begining of august with my friend and her family for 2week, im 15 years old and really enjoyed the holiday, i didnt want to come home. The pool was brill, John and Lynn the best entertainers ever, they got me looking forward to the night time all the time, i loved joining in all the games and all the brazillian dancing and stuff, i had such a laff, and i met so many friends, it was just amazing, the food was ok and the room was fine, i just loved being out by the pool being entertained and with all my mates. I wud deffo come back again, but yeh it was set in a very ugly place, but the beach wasnt far and the weather was amazing.
Oh my God!
FICUS! Well what can i say. I stayed here with my husband, son 12 yrs, daughter 4 yrs my dad and his partner, August 2006. Never been to lanzarote before + we had all been eagerly awaiting the holiday for weeks, all of us very excited. We arrived in the resort+turned up the road which lead to the Ficus+our hearts sank [very deep] It looked like it had been plonked in the middle of wasteland with its own attatched tip! Walked into a small reception area to check in, had a look in the small resturant whilst passing only to be greeted by a group 7 to 10 yr olds shouting, throwing and tipping salt/pepper into the drinks and all over the tables. Rooms themselves were spacious but basic+the cleanliness was not of a very high standard, towels smelt and the bath looked like it had`nt had a good scrub in months. Pool area was very small for the amount of people they had staying there, sunbeds were a no-no unless you wanted to queue like animals in a cattle market, waiting for a man to come round and unchain them! They needed at least an extra 100 beds for the people staying there. There was hardly anything for the kids to do by the pool, no proper kids club, just the odd darts or water polo, nothing at all for my 4 yr old. i`m not a snob by no means, but this was a very rowdy hotel, alot of parents drinking all day and night, whilest the kids were left to do what they wanted, when they wanted, this spoiling it for the more respectable families trying to enjoy themselves. Once out of the hotel the resort was pleasant with a nice beach. I can honestly say we would never return to this hotel, even if it was free. The Ficus is definatly CHEAP, but sadly not CHEERFUL!
Below average
Booked this as a late availability holiday, so knew nothing about the FICUS or Lanzarote. The FICUS is basically a cheap and cheerful hotel, I can't see how it got 3* rating by Thomas Cook, as the facilities are limited for the number of guests it is supporting. Eating, pool and evening entertainment facilites are sadly lacking. The food is plentiful, but average and very tedious, our kids loved this, chips, fish fingers etc! We hired a car for 7 days, as we could not handle the cramped pool environment and having to get up at 08:00 to queue for a sunbed, so saw lots of the island, which is impressive. Overall would recommend Lanzarote to anyone, very nice place, but unless you like Butlins with sun, then look elsewhere for your accomodation.
Think twice before booking the Ficus
We stayed at the Ficus for 2 weeks in August. The apartments are set in the middle of wasteland so not a particularly good setting. The apartments are cleaned 5 days a week but beware, they only changed the towels about 3 times during our stay! Over a 2 week period the food in the restaurant became repetitive and be warned, don't be late for breakfast, they remove it if it close to 10.00 am, even if you are queuing!! We often ate breakfast at Cactus Jacks - a full english breakfast for 2 euros and very tasty. On the plus side the pool is clean but there are not enough sunbeds to go round. We often had to sit on our patio chairs. The evening entertainment is rubbish. The 2 Sunset reps try their best to entertain you - if you enjoy that kind of thing then that's O.K.
A tired little hotel
A bit dubious after reading others on Trip Adviser but over all quite a nice holiday. First impressions not good, built on what looks like wasteland and a great need for tidying up. Rooms spacious but very shabby and was not pleased to see most electrical fittings hanging out of the wall. The bathroom, although clean was a bit grotty and in need of some attention. The rest of the appartment was clean. A number of lights didn't work,so reported this at reception and almost immediately fixed. Very impressive. The bar area is rather odd, looks a bit temporary and were often given drinks in plastic cups! Again i feel this needs a bit of a makeover! Major problems with people reserving sunbeds and there clearly is not enough to go round, especially in high season. The reception area displayed a poster informing people that they would remove any towels put there reserving them but when we spoke to them they said they would not get involved!. the two reps were left to announce this daily but still no action was taken. Having said all of this, it was a nice place just a bit neglected and i'm sure if they sorted these problems out it would be a lovely family hotel.
Your holiday is what you make of it!
On arrival to Lanzarote i thought we landed on the moon, quite bare this was a shock but you do get use to the terrain. The airport to resort could have been smoother, but i have experienced worse cases. On arrival in resort(Costa Tegiese) and the road leading to the hotel, i was disappointed as the hotel Ficus is surrounded by waste land. The hotels situation is acceptable to local shops and bars(make sure you visit Cactus Jacks, after midnight happy hour, great night) meals are good too. The reception area and the hotel in general is dated and in need of improvements. While we were there work was being carried out, painting etc, this did not inconvenience me nor from what i saw any other guests. This hotel has no lifts and i struggled with 3 cases to the top floor, i am a 6ft healthy man, i would suggest anyone who would find stairs hard to tackle should request a lower or a ground floor room. The rooms a clean a spacious, and the maid calls about three times a week, however be aware we did experience the maid simply putting dirty towels back on the rack instead of replacing with fresh. The pool is good, clean and there is also a toddlers pool for the less experienced. The pool is a good depth a 6 footer can easily stand up in any part of the pool. The pool bar is in my opinion isolated, tucked away in the corner, therefore not creating a social atmosphere around the pool. The staff in general would do better to remember that all the guests are on holiday and they should at least try to engage and smile at the guests, everything seemed to be a chore rather than a pleasure. Having said that i did not receive poor service from anyone. The entertainment team, Lynn McKenzie & John Jones are two great guys both compliment each other and do a great job trying to entertain the guest, we had some great laughs with them, even shared a drink with them in there own time. Entertainment for young children is not catered for, this is a Thomas Cook/Sunset decision, so please don't shoot the entertainment team, they are merely under orders to what they can and can not do. At night mini disco(45 mins) and other kiddies games take place in total for about 1 hour, then bingo(which we won twice totaling 250 euros!!!). Family entertainment is laid on every night until the bar closes at 11.30, this is either local acts or Lynn and John, sometimes with the help from other reps. The restaurant is clean with basic facilities. The food does become predictable and a bit boring after a week or so, however its as cheap as chips to eat out. You may say "why should you pay to eat out, when you have paid to eat on an all inclusive basis"?, i would reply your holiday is what you make it, don't waste time in complaining and getting stressed, enjoy your stay at the Ficus. The hotel to airport transfer went well with no problems, the airport is quite good with plenty of last minute shopping available, bars and fast food outlets. I would recommend Pizza Hut, better than the UK. Overall our holiday was very enjoyable we had a great time, thanks to the entertainment team Lynn & John and the good friends we had made. Would we go back probably yes to the resort, probably not to the hotel.
Take extra cash for food
The hotel as you approach it looks a little run down, the sign is not looking its best and its in the middle of a piece of wasteland. Things do improve when you walk through the door into reception. The rooms are large apartments, basic but everything you need is there. They are very clean, as is the rest of the hotel area especially the pool area which is cleaned daily. If the hotel is full, you will struggle for a sunbed as there are more guests than beds. The bad bits, you will need to take extra money for food, as the food is awful. There is only so much 'meat with pork' you can take, and this is fatty and full of gristle. The bacon in a morning is very fatty and the bread never seems fresh. On an evening the entertainment is poor, whilst the reps do their best and work hard the local entertainment is poor. Whilst eating out, I suggest you try Ferrari's bar and Bar Popeye. Overall the hotel is clean and spacious but I wouldnt recomend it.
Great holiday
We stayed at the Ficus for two weeks mid June, we had a lovely holiday. On arrival at the apartments we were seen quickly and sent away with our room key. We arrived at our room where we checked out the room, we found In the room that there were 3 steps leading down to the living area which worried me as we have a one year old daughter which In the end wasn't a problem. There was a plug hanging out of the wall, one quick call to reception and It was sorted out within an hour so no complaints there. The food was great the first week, but did get repetative for the second, there was always something to choose, they did different meal evenings Mexican, Spanish, Italian and Chinese which were all fine. The entertainment was okay, we only stayed In a few nights to watch the adults entertainment however we did stay In the early part of the evening for the mini disco, which my daughters loved. After staying In the resort of Costa Teguise before we went out most evenings to bars that we knew from before, try The Jug and Platter In the old square about 15 minutes walk or 3 Euro's In a taxi, it does lovely food and also has a free bouncy castle for the kids, there's an english bar at the bottom of the road called The Black Swan which was also a nice place to go. The entertainment team Lynn and John were great, we only had a week of John has he was off sick for the second week, Lynn was fantastic she was great with the kids and also with adults too. Becky the Sunset rep was great too. There were a few complaints whilst we were there, people wanting English breakfast, If people want english breakfast why go to a spanish hotel just go to Blackpool, If people Insist on wanting Englsh breakfast then don't go all Inculsive go Self Catering and eat out. People also complained about the food becoming repetative, yes It did, but If you ate out for two weeks every night you would find food would get repetative then. Overall we had a fantastic holiday, wished the weather was a bit better, but you can't have everything. Just one last thing, when It is overcastt don't think you won't get burnt because you do, the amount of kids we saw burnt eveywhere was unreal, so just be careful. Great Holiday would definatly go back.
Not bad at all
Visited this hotel for a week in 2006. Driving up to the hotel my heart sunk....It was set in what looked like wasteland and the 'Ficus' sign was broken and paint peeling off.....Not a good sign I thought. However room was large in size with a separate bedroom and a large lounge with dining table and kitchen facilities. Pool was absolutely freezing but hey who wants a heated pool when you are on holiday anyway? At the time I stayed they had painters in tarting up some of the apartments so it looks like an ongoing revamp. Restaurant was fine, plenty of choice - not the best quality food you have ever had in your life but when you are hungry anything goes! - They did vary the evenings menus with a Canarian, Mexican, Spanish, Italian etc night. Breakfast though was a bit hard to swallow - really greasy eggs and really fatty bacon and sausages but they did have a large selection of pastries. Most of the holidaymakers spent their time plastered round the pool to take advantage of the free drinks, icecream etc which meant finding a sunbed a bit of a problem, there is definately more holidaymakers than sunbeds so they were operating a fair use policy whilst I was there that if there was a towel on a sunbed for any length of time it would be removed which was fair. Entertainment was good - John and Lynn did try their best to motivate the guests, though one volunteer for a game of volleyball didn't make much of a game!!! Kids entertainment between 8 and 9....Game of bingo....Main entertainment between 10:15 - 11:30, varies every night, quizzes, sometimes they got a local act in - always face painters in for the kids. I didn't go to the entertainment most of the time but apparantly a lot of people complained that there was too much kiddies entertainment........Hey if you don't like it there is always pubs and bars a 5 minute walk away!!! All in all good value for money, nice area, only gripe was food could have been a bit more palatable!!!!!!
Entertainment Incredible!
Everything at the Ficus was brilliant! The Entertainments Staff, Lynn McKenzie and Dan Harris put in so much effort and made all the difference to our holiday. Lynn being lovablely dippy and Dan being the cheekiest guy ever - In a good way! Everything they did was brilliant and can't fault them in anyway. Will definately be going back next year, especially if Lynn and Dan are there together again. Cheers guys!
