If you want a good night out go to the Iris Bar, the best places we ate at were, Relax, Asteria, and Fantasia, all of which were very good, and reasonably priced.

Submitted By: angelmaryWeather was very mixed, as is usually the way in the Ionian isles in late Sept/Oct. We are in our 60's and like walking on holiday. Did a 10 mile walk on one occasion but to do another decent walk we would have had to hire a car.Bus service just about OK. Island best suited to young people who like clubs and loud music. We had a nice break lounging around just reading and sunbathing between showers.

" Me and my wife have not long returned... "
Submitted By: Mr D J GrubbYes the rooms are basic, but clean and tidy, we ate out most of the time, plenty of good places to eat locally ie Relax, Zorbas, to name a few.
All the locals we encountered were all friendly, we can't wait to go back again next year, it was our first holiday anywhere in Greece, and it certainly won't be our last, we fell in love with the place.
The only thing I would warn you, don't have a room above the bar, it can be a bit noisey at times, as the bar stays open as long as they have customers.
But apart from that the place is great.

" My holiday in Zante was just amazing... "
Submitted By: Miss N EamesThe 2 brothers Theo and Billy are really nice and so are their cousins Dennis and Alex they make you feel really welcome and they are great with kids.
The bar was nice but the nosie does travel at night time.
The pool is nice but is very deep.
The hotel is a family resort but it is not Maria Sudios or Apartments but Maria Hotel.
It is a long walk from the main town and with carrying water back it is a nightmare.
But all in all it was a lovely holiday and i would go back again.

Submitted By: K FUnfortunately allocated two rooms immediately above bar, room no 38 and 41.
Unless you are happy to be part of the party scene until 4.30am - beware.
First choice allocate rooms via rep.Not very interested in moving people to quieter rooms unless major pressure is applied.
Tip - Dont go on organised trips, very expensive and many people had problems - not picked up, dropped off wrong times, and left to find location of boat for round island tour - failed.Problems getting money refunded.
Hire a car - cheaper to go into town and book your own rather than through rep.
Rooms vary in size as do the balconies, clean but basic, dont plan on doing much cooking, very basic hob, sink and fridge.
Ate breakfast and occasional lunch there - very good.
Shower needs to be hand held, cannot stand under it.You need to pay for air-conditioning on arrival, along with safety deposit boxes.
Walk to restaurants and beach in Alykes town about 10 minutes.
The saving grace was however the staff - family run by theo and dennis who made all very welcome .

Submitted By: Mr M CooperTheo, Alex, Dennis etc all made you feel very welcome and always had time to talk to you, with nothing being too much trouble for them. The ladies who cleaned the rooms deserve a special mention as they always seemed to be working from very early in the morning to late at night.
The apartment was probably much better than we expected - very clean and with great views over the pool and the bar (we were in room 9).
Most nights we would walk into the town (about 15 minutes or so) and eat at one of the many restauraunts, of which there were plenty for a relatively small resort. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and the food was great wherever you chose to eat.
The beach and sea were also fantastic, with the water being very clear and very safe for all ages. We were quite often torn between the beach and sitting round the pool, as we found the food at the Maria Apartments as good as anywhere, especially the full english breakfasts, the salads and the cheeseburgers!
We found that there was plenty of variety in the music played at the pool/bar areas, in fact it was good to hear a number of CD's played on more than one occasion as this helped to build up great memories of the holiday and associate these with certain songs (UB40 being amongst my own favourites!).
Overall, we can't speak highly enough of the Maria Apartments or the resort itself. We definitely plan to go back next year. I understand that package deals will be booked through Olympic Holidays in 2009, and have found a link to the Maria through the Olympic website, although they're not accepting any bookings yet. Would love to hear from anyone who has any further info.
Big hello to everyone we met (you were all as friendly and good company as Theo and the guys and helped make the holiday such a great one for us) and who knows, maybe we'll see some of you again next year! Yammas!

" Theo, Alex and Billy are brilliant... "
Submitted By: Mr A J WilliamsonIts necessary to hire a vehicle or you'll be doing a hard core walk 20 mins either way to the closest beach. This walk is also past the cess pit known as the "salt marshes". The "salt marshes" are just mosquito breeding areas but aren't that big a problem. We found "Spikeys Bar" and the "Jungle Bar" very good places to go for a drink and the "Olympic" restaurant by far the best on the Alykes strip. The vehicle you hire will also enable you to get out of the resort and visit other areas of the island.
We went on a boat trip we think was called the "Top Cruiser". It cost 27 euros and took up a whole day and circumnavigated the whole island. We got quite bored on this trip as it took forever it felt to complete, plus a three quarters of an hour wait for return transport. The "Blue Caves" and "Smugglers Cove" are defintely worth a visit but the rest of the island past "Smugglers" is none descript at best. Just do a half day or 3 hour trip and get back on the beach and swim in the crystal clear water.
Zante is a lovely relaxing holiday and the Maria Studios are good value for money. Some of the restaurants in Alykes are a bit average but it is hot, sunny and extremely relaxing.

" I have just returned from the Maria... "
Submitted By: Mr Af MasonFirstly I didn't see anyone get shoulders shrugged at them. If the music was too loud shut the doors. Too hot with all the doors shut? THEN GET AIR CONDITIONING YOU TIGHTWADS. As for Karaoke well I don't like it either but it was only for two nights of the week,so buggar off somewhere else for a couple of nights instead of whinging about it,because most people do like karaoke.
Yes they did play the same music in the bar a lot but if you asked them(as we did ) they would change it,as they did for us. Why are people moaning about the lack of a Greek night ? They have one every two weeks. If it doesn't fall on your week go find another one,you were in Greece there are more Greek nights than you can shake a stick at..Bit of a no brainer really but I suppose you forgot to pack yours !
This type of accommodation is really there for budget holidaymakers of which I am and for two star it was good. I have stayed in supposedly better hotels than this and it has not come up to the Maria's standards. If you want better well clear off somewhere else and pay for better.
Yes I must admit to feeling a little sorry for people who got put into the rooms above the bar cos it would have been noisy, but the brochures and the review sites did state this so if you don't want this don't book it!! another no brainer!! Anyway we noticed they would move people if they weren't happy.
I think some people like to moan for the sake of it and in the case of this hotel it is very unfair cos for the money you paid it was very good so sod off whingers!!
The Maria hotel provided very good basic accommodation. We even had a shower curtain which you dont always get!! The air con was effective(if you weren't a tightwad).Bed was a bit hard but hey they normally are.
The food in the little outside eatery was about what you would expect but it was always really nice(in fact nicer than some restaurants) The pool area and pool itself was lovely and clean and tidy and a nice place to relax.
The bar in the evenings was always very friendly if not a little mad some nights which is what you want on holiday(take them a football shirtand they will pin it to the ceiling)
You can only give very top marks to Billy Theo and Alex for being brilliant hosts...well done lads!! Let's not forget those intrepid maids who did a great job. All the staff seemed to be always there, thanks for the hard work and the brilliant holiday.
30 out of 10 Thank you, remember you always Sarah Mason and Tony Ridges.
