Poros Apartments Reviews
" The accommodation is ideally located... "
Submitted By: Mr G Grant
The accommodation is ideally located for tavernas, supermarket, bus stop and other local facilities. The walk to Troulos beach is a leisurely 10 minutes.
All balconies face onto quiet olive tree grove type gardens (complete with pet donkey), and although the road can get quite busy at times, the apartment was very quiet and trouble free.
The room was very basic but a good size considering its 2 star rating and kitchen facilities are full size, bathroom more than adequate by Greek standards (even had a shower curtain).
The only downside when we were there was; lack of maid service, Toilet paper bin emptied 12 out of 14 nights, sheets & towels (small hand size only) changed only 4 times in 14 nights.
The owner when visiting was a very dour man with not much to say but we found this to be true of many people on Skiathos, which at first takes you by surprise after visiting other Greek islands.
The wasps were very annoying and in huge numbers (same with the mosquitoes) I got 40+ mozzie bites & 1 wasp sting, they never leave you alone, particularly on the balcony. Ants too of various sizes whilst not too annoying could be a bit much for the more squeamish.
We found the resort of Troulos quite quiet but to our liking. Troulos beach is fabulous but some of the local young men can come across as very rowdy and annoying especially at weekends. 2 sunbeds & umbrella cost 8 Euros (same all over island) but you can save 2 Euros a day by using sunbeds at Troulos bay hotel (be early! very nice staff).
Koukanaries beach again lovely but crowded, banana beach fantastic (overpriced food & drink) (be prepared for the killer 20 minute walk from bus stop) but again a lot of rowdy local youths. Food in resort fantastic never had a bad meal prices very reasonable for food, large beer range 2 Euros to 3.5 Euros. Skiathos town getting very commercialised & very expensive, we found 2 visits was enough.
Bus service fantastic, every 15 minutes all bus stops numbered from Skiathos town all way to Koukanaries, Taxi drivers make formula 1 drivers look slow but all are good condition Mercedes.
Overall a fantastic holiday considering 2 star rating, 14 days of brilliant hot sunshine, but heat wave 1st week meant daytime highs on 2 days of 45 to 47 degrees C, in the shade!
Would definitely return to Island again but would prefer accommodation to have air con (unlike ours).

Mozzies on the balcony can be a problem but as long as you are completely (!) covered
in repellent you should be ok (it's amazing where the little b---ers can get to bite you). Ouzo seems to be a natural remedy but the Marmite option is dubious.
Tavernas and supermarkets are plentiful and bus service (every 15 minutes) very good. E.1.50 per person one way. Poros apartments sit at bus stop number 18.
The beginning of September is a good time to go, we understand during June, July and August it can be very hot and very, very busy as the resort is a popular holiday destination with Greeks and Italians; at that time the buses can be crowded, likewise Skiathos town.
On the whole we found the island delightful and the people very friendly and helpful. We would definitely go back, in late August or early September -perhaps flight only next time. All the resorts seems to close around 15th October and the airport shuts too.
PS. Do not worry about the length of the airport runway, although not very long, we stopped short of the beach and the take off coming back was very smooth.
