Having stayed in many 5 star resorts previously, I have no hesitation in stating that this hotel does not deserve such an accolade. On the surface it is a good 4 star resort, but on arrival the room was dirty and none of the standards I would normally expect from a 5 star... more

Yeah Mon! Red Stripe and Jerk Chicken for all!
from A TripAdvisor Member
I recently had the fortune of staying at SuperClub's Grand Lido Negril on the island's scenic west coast. Let me say first that my expectations of an all inclusive hotel were lined with thoughts of sub-par buffets and watered down mai-tai cocktails. Boy was I pleasantly surprised!!! Three buffet meals were prepared daily by excellent chefs. There was a wonderful assortment of fruits, vegetables, meats, sauces, pastas etc. Not to mention the several other restaurants scattered throughout the resort offering everything from Italian to Fine French Cuisine. The bar was stacked with top shelf liquors from all over the world. The only dissappointment was the lack of beer choices, Red Stripe or Miller Lite, but hey, its Jamaica mon! When in Jamaica...drink like the Jamaicans do, right??? Daytime activities at the Grand Lido were pretty decent. The concierge offered everything from snorkeling trips, to shopping tours into the City, to Crocodile hunting on the Black River. I found the snorkeling to be particularly special, not only for the great sea life, but also for the boat trip past the Hedonism II's nude beach..(WOW).. Grand Lido's nightlife was nothing like a stereotypical Spring Break Bash. The parties, although well catered, lacked any real excitement. The place was shut down by 12am, and it sounded like the crickets were having more fun than any of the guests. Long story short, I feel that Grand Lido Negril is an awesome place for lovers, newlyweds, and families. Food is great, drinks are great, and I find it hard to beat its accomodations and weather. Yet I would NOT recommend Grand Lido for singles, save your money and stay across the street at Hedonisim II....Now that my single friends, is a WILD PARTY!!!!!
The Good and the Bad, More of the Latter
from A TripAdvisor Member
We got married and honeymooned for a week in May, 2003 with a group of 9 people (parents and siblings). This was our second trip to Grand Lido and we selected it for the wedding because of the atmosphere and high quality food. However, there were some low points. Here is the good and the bad...Good -The food was by far the best we have had in the Carribean, especially La Piacere. The fillet was outstanding as was the service.-The bars were well stocked (except for Grand Marnier, which did arrive on our last day).-The beach was clean and mostly private (some annoying jet-ski lurkers sometimes selling more than rides; they have to lookout for security though).-The grounds were beautiful and well kept.-The service was pleasant if not gracious most of the time (exception - front desk - awful). On a few occasions offered tips were refused but on others that uncomfortable wait for a tip occurred and it was eagerly taken.-The wedding - the wedding coordinator and more so her assistant were fabulous, pleasant, and well organized.-The nondenominational minister for the service was a treat. A perfect blend of seriousness and fun. Truly something and someone we will never forget.-Little touches - for example, the small fridge in our suite was constantly stocked; flowers placed throughout the room by cleaning staff; unexpected bottles of champagne and hors dourves in our room.-The diving was well organized and guided but the sites were bland with minimal sea life (almost all small).Bad -The trip from Montego Bay - fly if you can. The stop at a local watering hole where again more than a beverage was offered was not appreciated by all.-The arrival - long wait in the lounge, messed up room assignments and bookings for things like restaurant seatings, manicures, hair etc. We really shouldn't have had to spend so much time (and anxiety) while there sorting these things out when they were supposed to be taken care of before we arrived.-Room assignments. We (bride and groom) booked a one-bedroom suite while the others booked into 4 Junior Suites (with free room upgrades from the travel agent). The problem was primarily that it was not possible to separate the members of the group more than was done. The rooms were all as absolutely as far from each other as possible. The room upgrades were worthless. However, after daily checks most were moved to rooms closer to each other 3 days later.-One bedroom suite. Best advice - DO NOT waste your money. Stay in a regular room, even for a wedding. We would have been closer to the others for starters. The suite had several problems. It took a day and 2 phone calls to get the hairdryer working and the hottub adventure was laughable. It simply did not work - jets or heat. We called soon after settling in and someone came in about an hour; he fixed the jets but not the heat. Many calls and a daily trip to the front desk resulted. Days went by and eventually several groups of repair people came and got the tub working .. the night before we left - the heater had to be replaced. The main problem I found here was not the tub itself (things break) but the complete lack of interest by front desk staff in dealing with our problems. That was truly disappointing and frustrating.- Construction - we were there for our wedding and honeymoon. There was construction all around us. Who books these rooms! When sitting on our second floor balcony we were constantly under the gaze of demolition workers on smoke breaks and my wife subject to frequent catcalls all within view of the posted security guard. Calls and visits to the front desk met with little response. Usually "we'll look into it". Then nothing. Not once did anyone at the frontdesk call back or even acknowledge that there was a problem. Issues were handled very curtly. Wait, actually someone did respond once when I called about hammering and sawing in the room directly below ours at 11:30 pm the night of our wedding. They were rebuilding some doors. It stopped shortly after. We requested a room change about an hour after arriving but were told the suites were booked up for the week. The coming and going we observed suggested this may not have been accurate. On our second day there we asked to be moved to out of the one-bedroom suite and into a regular room with a refund of the difference in cost. That request was flatly refused.- Our calls and approaches to the desk were always nonconfrontable and friendly. We really are not the complaining types but after spending so much money we really felt we deserved better so we planned to have our say on checkout. Get it out of our systems and forget about it so to speak. The checkout kinda went like this - stand at the empty desk for about 5 minutes while one person speaks on the phone and the second is counting money. Eventually one of them looks up and says "room number", I reply, she goes on the computer, looks up again and says "keys", I hand them over, she takes the keys and while typing in the computer says "thanks" without any eye cotact. No "how was your stay", 'I hope you enjoyed yourselves" nothing - it really felt like a slap in the face. We were made to feel extremely frustrated and impotent to do anything about it. It would have been nice to stand there and scream but we just walked away to have another drink and wait for the bus.Someone told later there was a new manager there. Don't know if it's true, but if so he's got a lot of work to do. This was not the Grand Lido we remembered from our previous visit. Before we went, we looking in a guidebook under Grand Lido Negril and the first word was 'Overrated'. We didn't believe it then but we do now.The food, the beach, the ocean, and the wedding ceremony made the trip unforgettable. Although we were married there we would definitely not go back. For this kind of money there has to be better.Email us if you have any questions, especially if planning a wedding at Grand Lido.
Second trip
from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I got back from our second trip to Jamaica about a month ago. This was also our second trip to GLN. The check-in process could be streamlined (we sat for about an hour with a couple who road in on the same bus while they got our paperwork taken care of and found someone to show us to our room). Once in the room, the baggage arived quite promptly and our week in paradise could really begin. The food was awesome (we caught the end of the epicurean extravaganza) and the amenities were quite nice. We didn't get to do nearly as much scuba diving as we had hoped (although this had to do with a forgotten cert card and an ear infection, neither of which the hotel could be blamed for). The disco was great and my wife and I ended up winning two bottles of alcohol (one bottle of rum and one bottle of rum cream) at the various activites throughout the week. We each had a massage, and while we enjoyed it we probably won't get one again. Overall, our experience was quite good and we will definately be returning in the not too distant future.
It is a nice place to stay!!

Very nice and relaxing at the GLN, I will come again. All-inclusive is the only way to go.
Not a 5 star resort as advertised.
from A TripAdvisor Member
I am a travel agent and I stayed here with my husband and another couple that are freinds of ours Sep. 11-16, 2003. The rooms were fine. We were upgraded from the garden view to ocean view of the nude beach. The grounds and exterior of the hotel really need some work. The service from the bar at the pool was mosty terrible except if Caren was working. Most of the bartenders are slow and do not care. Example, I asked for a drink after standing there for 5 min. then the bartender turned around and proceeded to finish washing all the dishes in his sink then he got me my drink. Also the pool bar isn't supposed to close until 7pm. At 6:30pm I asked for a pina colda. He said he wouldn't make me one cuz he had already washed the blender. LAZY ! They don't care because they don't work for tips. We went into town to Margaritville and as soon as you set your drink down they were right there asking if you needed another. Service was great there. Back to the Grand Lido. For the price I would not recommend it to my clients. Although the food was much better than the all - inclusives in Mexico the resort was not up to a 5 star rating. The snorkeling sucks, there are people always bugging you to buy drugs from them, mostly the people working there. If your thinking of getting married here keep in mind the wedding gazebo is right smak on the nude beach so there will be a bunch of naked people prancing around at your wedding. I had a massage one day. The worst ever, it was supposed to be an aromatherapy massage, no aroma, no therapy. The woman was rough and didn't know what she was doing. They advertised a free mani/pedi. The day I was sked 2 women called in sick so I wasn't able to have it done. The other couple got food posioning one night, I think from the sushi, they were sick for two days until they went to the resort Dr. and got some meds. When they got their check out bill there was a facial on there that they never had. Some other guest was so kind as to charge it to their room. I have traveled several Carribean Island and don't think I would return to Jamacia or the Grand Lido anytime soon. If your looking for true Paradise go to Grand Cayman. It may cost a bit more but it will be 100 times worth it not to have to be hassled and harrased and feel unsafe.
Okay stay at GLN
from MA_Beach_Lovers
Just returned on 9/1 from a 4 day stay at GLN. The resort is a great place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. We especially enjoyed the 4th Annual Epicurean Escape activities, and the various restaurant choices for dinner at GLN. The breakfast and lunch buffets were just ok, and definitely need improvement - although we took advantage of the great room service menu. The overall service was inconsistent - hit ( room service, at restaurants, nice renovated jacuzzi suites, maid ) or miss ( check-in, spa, bellhop ). Overall, we enjoyed our stay at GLN but would prefer other 'more modern' resorts for the price.
Fat Cats
from cbennett
Just returned from Grand Lido Negril after 1 week vacation. We paid for a beach front room on the clothing side of the resort. From other reviews, I knew to ask for a renovated room on the clothing optional side. After several calls to the front desk and a call to the manager we got one after the first night. Clothing side rooms leave MUCH to be desired, especially the bathrooms. The renovated rooms were much nicer. New tile in bathrooms, jacuzzi tub, larger TV w/ preminum cable channels, nicer curtains, etc. Note though, it is still NOT a five star or four star hotel. It's barely a three in terms of luxury. Hearing that this is the nicest in Negril, shocked me. I imagined something on the scale of the Atlantis in the Bahamas...NOT EVEN CLOSE. If you have a choice, stay on the clothing optional side and stay on a higher floor. On the lower floors you can walk right out to the beach, however, there are cats roaming everywhere (trying to eat room service leftovers). If you stay on lower floors and leave your patio door open (which is nice to get island breezes), well you might be sleeping with cats...or crabs. Saw some of the biggest crabs ever walking around the resort. On a brighter side, the food was fabulous. We were fat cats when we left the resort. SO much food at the buffets and good food. La Pasta was great!! Excellent seafood pasta dishes. My boyfriend really liked the French rest. (foodwise). I couldn't get past the cheesy pink decor. Scotch Bonnet was excellent...very spicy. Nice to have the extra amenies, like free mani/pedi, free dry cleaning and most water sports and 24 hour room service (sometimes slow, but all-in-all average waits). Good gym and fun aerobics classes overlooking beach. Get a couples massage right on the beach...fabulous. Oh, one more thing regarging clothing optional side, when standing on your balcony/patio, you will see the nude people clearly. Don't expect younger Hedonism crowd, expect MUCH older nude people. Didn't mind at first, but as the week progressed, I got tired of looking at them, especially the ones who just wanted to chat at the bar completely nude.
Will try somewhere else next time.

My wife and I recently travelled to Grand Lido Negril for a second Honeymoon of sorts. We found the vacation to be quite average. We were unable to obtain 2 reservations for the "free" manicure and pedicure, so only one of us was able to go. Also, we were not able to get confirmed reservations on the Zein (big disappointment as well). To continue on with the issues...the front desk was very unresponsive and the sunshine guarantee was simply not honored. We sat and had lunch in the main buffet area during a rainstorm (it was completely overcast). When we asked about the sunshine guarantee, they said it came out around noon. None of the other travellers saw it either. We were placed on the clothing optional side. Not our cup of tea. The disco was entirelly deserted. It was also difficult to get reservations for the formal restaurant. This was an all-inclusive vacation...but if you cannot get reservations for the nice restaurants, etc. it becomes a drag. Try to have your agent set it all up for you before you go.The grounds of the resort were very nice though. We did enjoy waterskiing with Captain Weston. The scuba diving was ok, not anything exceptional. Much better diving off Catalina Island in California. It was nice to have 24 hour roomservice (when they finally decided to show up). Our room did have a great view of the ocean. It was nice to sit on the porch and read.Overall, not the high end resort we thought it would be. Maybe our expectations were too much. The ranking is probably closer to 2.5 dots on a scale of 1 to 5.
One word...Perfect!

Grand Lido in Jamacia was the best vacation ever. The food was excellence, the staff fantastic and the location perfect. Every thing we ate was great, especially the gourment restaurant. There is plenty to do and everything is well maintained. They ever rake the beach everynight. It you are going to Jamacia, this is the place to stay!

Hi, I just returned from Grand Lido in Negril. My experience started out very disappointing. I had went to Jamaica with my Aunt who is 75 years old, she had never been out of the country so I wanted here to experience it. When we finally got to the hotel after being held up at the airport because they said Grand Lido did not have us on their reservation list we finally made it to the hotel around 9:00. We were served champane while we waited for our rooms. When they finally handed out room assignments and we were taken to our rooms, it seemed like we went on a 1 mile hike to get there. I immediately went back to the desk to inform them that we requested a double bed room and that that room was too far for my aunt to walk to the main area. The front clerk said she would change our rooms first thing the next morning. Well needles to say they did change our rooms the next day and we were closer to the dining facilities but the room still had a king size bed in it and the room was not completely furnished, the phone was not working, the toilet would not flush and they still had not provided us with a small refrigirator for my aunt's insuline. The furniture that was in there was really smelly and still felt wet from whoever had the room the day before. I went back up to the front desk to inquire about another room. By that time they said they were all out of rooms and that they would fix everything that needed to be fixed. Well later that evening I went back up there to inquire as to why nothing had been fixed, they said they thought it was and that they would send someone right away. Well by this time I was really not feeling the day, expecially since it was my birthday. Once they learned that it was my birthday things started to turn for the better. They offered me a complimentary message plus provided an in room private dinner which included a birthday cake and a bottle of champane. Needless to say my Aunt does not drink so I had to suffer through the whole bottle by myself (smile). I later left for the disco, I was disapointed at first because there were only a few people there, not to mention the local guy that worked at the hotel was really starting to irritate me. Said he loved me and wanted me to marry him. I finally decided to make the best of the rest of the night so it ended up ok once I kicked him to the curb. I would suggest that anyone who goes there, go as a couple because to be single and its your birthday on top of that, you're not going to get your money's worth.
