This hotel is only 20 minutes away by coach from the airport in the south of Barbados. It is located up a one way street that is in the slightly more up beat part of St Lawrence Gap. There is a night club and a few pubs across from it and hotels either side. The hotel... more

St Lawrence Gap itself is a little area off the main highway - packed with bars, clubs and restaurants that caters for most holiday requirements. It tends to be quiet during the day when most people head off to the beach about 1km away, but at night it is a very lively,... more

Home from Home
My wife and I stayed at the South Gap for 8 nights, it was our third time in Barbados but first time in South Gap. We recieved a very warm welcome from Deonne who handled our booking. A very comfortable hotel with spectacular views. Its location is ideal as St Lawrences Gap is the heart of Barbados. Most of the islands great restaurants are within walking distance as public transport can be a bit of a lottery. Discos and pubs close by, very central. While we didn't eat in the hotel restaurant, it was very reasonably priced and had friendly bar staff. Rooms large, well kept with comfortable furniture all with views of the ocean. Stay at "The Gap", you won't be dissapointed.
decent hotel right on the sea
Stayed at this hotel from 11th nov - 25th nov. Very impressed with this hotel and the surrounding area. Rooms very clean and comfortable. Food in restaurant reasonabally priced and tasty. Service in all areas excellent. Pool well maintained, warm and clean. Very deep at one end and you are even able to dive in. From each room you can sit on your balcony and watch the fishermen, feed the birds and just listen to the waves crashing against the wall. You are so close to the sea it is truly unbelievable. Although it is a small hotel there is still plenty of room for everyone. Happy hours twice a day but prices are good anyway. Many reviews go on about the noise from across the road so we took our earplugs just in case, but needless to say we didn't use them. We stayed in room 220 on the first floor and used to sit outside on the veranda watching the world go by and listening to the music. If you are tired you will sleep through the noise or just go and join in. Many great restaurants catering for all budgets. We enjoyed the buffet breakfasts at mikes and their evening meals were really nice also. Food at ship in directly across road is also good value, you do not need to spend excessively. Cheapest and strongest drinks served at after dark next to the ship. Best place to watch the sunset is left out of the hotel and walk around the corner to the right and get a beer and watch. Get there about 5pm, lovely views. Oistens fish fry on a Fri evening really good although dont go too early, livens up later in the evening.make sure you do the island safari. Great fun and you get to see virtually all the island in a day. Cool runnings catamaran trip to swim with the turtles is a must do. Drinks all day and a lovely lunch. You can get around the island pretty easily on local buses or the little boogie buses. Very cheap. Taxis are also good value. All in all, a great holiday and did not spend as much money as i thought we would. Very safe place around the gap area and not far to stagger home after a few rum punches...wish we were still there. happy holidays to anybody out there getting ready to go soon.
Great views, great people
This is a great hotel! The staff are very friendly, and the rooms are very clean with beautiful views of the Caribbean sea. The hotel has a very central location and is a 5 minute walk from Dover Beach and a 10 minute walk from the very beautiful Worthing Beach. There are some great bars and restaurants near the hotel, all with happy hours for those all important 2 for 1 cocktails - very important! The hotel itself also has a happy hour and the restaurant there also serves good local food. The close proximity of the hotel to the bars and clubs means you can hear the music at night in your room, but it's not loud enough to keep you awake at night. I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to Barbados, particularly younger people who want to enjoy the nightlife and sleep off their hangovers on the beach the next day!
Superb time - great accommodations - nice people
What a pleasant surprise! I'm a seasoned U.S. traveler with many nights in many hotels per year - and I'm an avid scuba diver. The South Gap Hotel was perfect for my 8-day stay. The accommodations were clean and well-maintained with an extremely friendly staff. Every in/out was met with a friendly salutation - and after my first day, they all remembered my name and room number. OK, this is not a high-priced Marriot or Hilton hotel, but my bed was appropriately firm, the tile floors were lovely, the outdoor furniture (balcony and poolside) was comfortable and in good repair, restaurant recommendations and travel suggestions (bus, taxi) were accurate, bath/toilette facilities all worked well and were spotless, the air conditioner and TV were fairly new and worked properly, and, all of the appliances in the kitchen were perfect. The location is right in the middle of the St. Lawrence Gap night life scene (restaurants, bars, bands, etc.). It is within walking distance of all these places and a short 3-minute walk from the bus and taxi stops. From there, it is a 10-minute ride to downtown Bridgeport. OK, their breakfasts need a little help (too British?). But that is the only place for improvement that I can suggest. (The restaurant and hotel have different owners). Overall - I highly rate this intimate jewel. I'd go back to the South Gap Hotel in the blink of an eye. Glen Lowry
Every room with a view of the Caribbean!
This was our 3rd visit to South Gap Ocean Hotel and because we love Barbados so much, we stayed for 5 weeks. All the rooms have air con and tv and there is a gorgeous view of the Caribbean which you can even see from your bed. It's so lovely to wake up to it. All the staff are really friendly especially Rose and Trevor who work in the Bar (dont miss the happy hour cocktails) and Dionne (hope I spealt that right) on reception. The pool is huge, always clean and less than 10 feet away from the clear blue Caribbean waters. Throwing a few pieces of bread in the sea attracts all kinds of tropical fish within seconds. Something else important to me about this hotel is the fact it is right on the south coast. The sea breezes help provide a bit of cool as it can get quite hot. The hotel is centrally located in the popular St Lawrence Gap with plenty of nice bars and places to eat at any time of the day. If you are a beach person then Dover beach is only a short walk away. We are due to go back to Barbados in Novemer 2005 for 6 weeks and we have chosen to stay at South Gap once again. I'm sure it will live up to our expections again.
Not a good hotel for anyone who would like a good nights sleep
We have just returned from a two week holiday staying at the south ocean gap hotel. This hotel has some serious problems, I cann't say it's particualy dirty but very shabby. The rooms were not a bad size but the fittings were a disgrace, air con not working, hairdryer not working, film channel not working, sun beds falling apart, after many requests to some very surley staff some things were sorted out but no one can sort out the noise from the bars right opposite the hotel. The music goes on until 4am every night, it's impossible to sleep, needless to say we moved after the first week, we went to the Sea Breeze hotel 5mins away by car and it was really great, we felt like we only had one weeks holiday because the first week was toatally spoilt and nothing can give you that time back.
Room with a view
After paying only 380 pounds for a weeks holiday to barbados I wasn't expecting much in the way of our hotel but I was pleasantly surprised. The best thing about this hotel is that all rooms have a sea view. You couldn't beat sitting on our balcony with a cold bottle of banks watching the sun go down, bliss. The staff at reception were very friendly and helpful and the whole hotel has a very laid back atmosphere which was nice. It's true about the noise from across the street but I had already read about this before we went and was expecting it so we took ear plugs. Barbados is all about the beaches and the chilled out atmoshere so don't worry about your hotel just enjoy the experience. It has to be one of the best holidays I've been on and would definately go back
receptionist
I stayed at this lovely hotel for two weeks and I must comment on the staff at reception they were wonderful, everyday smiles, it was always a goodmoring, how are you today always asking how stay is going so far and always willing to help if we needed any help with trips or about the night life. the rooms are great all facing the lovely ocean view, the bar staff were also wonderful my husband and I love them all and we will return. So before I go I must say thanks to Tevor(barman) also known as badhabits the watiers nicky and rose(lovely)and the reception staff Monqiue,Catrina and Alisa job well done.
Loved it!
Have just returned from a fantastic 2 weeks in Barbados. Have stayed at Time Out at the Gap before but fancied a change. This hotel was very impressive. Got a room for £20pppn inc breakfast so was slightly worried as a bit cheap! However, it was wonderful. Our room was pleasant with a gorgeous ocean view. The pool area was quite small and often overcrowded but hey- who wants to sit by the pool when you have a fabulous beach down the road! (Sandy Beach). Noise from nearby clubs was quite loud therefore would only recommend this hotel for people who want to party! No kids!! Advantage for us though was that it wasnt far to go in the evenings!! Would recommend for food- The Ship Inn, Cafe Sol, Terrace Pizza Hut and Jade Garden. Bars- Jam Rock Cafe, After Dark, The Ship Inn, McBrides, Harbour Lights and the Boatyard. Daytime- Jolly Roger, Wildlife Reserve, The Boatyard, Sandy Beach, Sandy Lane Bay Will definately return!!
Cheap and Cheerful!
A summary before a more complete review is definately the way to go with this hotel. The hotel staff were friendly, room was clean and tidy, view fantastic and a good location in the 'middle of things'. Rooms My partner and I stayed in the cheapest of the cheapest rooms and were promptly put in a room just past the reception and at the beginning of the main corridor to the downstairs room. Going on previous reviews we thought we would be into a torrid stay noise wise and had come prepared with earplugs. To our joy there was little or no noise that some people had reported however if there was it wouldnt be massively surprising with the hotel location in the centre of 'The Gap'. The rooms although basic had all you needed - a bed, a balcony with table, cooking stoves, plates, fridge, cutlery, bath room and a key to lock the door. Staff The staff at all times were friendly and helpful be it from allowing us to check in at 9AM to booking a taxi early doors to the airport. Both the bar staff and restaurant waiters again were pleasant and friendly without being overpowering or annoying. Basically doing their job and doing it well with a constant smile without the sometimes irritating 'have a nice day' attitude that you get elsewhere in the world. Location The hotel is located towards one end of St Lawrence Gap ('The Gap') and as a result you have a few good beaches, coupled with a few good bars, restaurants and nightclubs close by. The Ship Inn is located dead opposite and has all nightly entertainment going on until late but this did not cross the road and didnt ever end up keeping us awake. A short walk to the tourist tat shops, and close to the main road for the 'white' buses for a lively trip either way up the coast. Some reviewers complained of a lack of a beach but this complaint is surely for the bone idle as there are plenty of beaches within a very short walking distance (2 minutes) and the sea lapping against the pool wall making an interesting change and for a relaxing noise before bed. If you dont mind it being a bit touristy and a bit louder than the advertised Caribbean idyll then this is an ideal spot to drop your bags. Price For the room and the location no complaints about this. Annoyances The only thing that I could think of if I am trying to complain about the hotel would be the birds on the balcony that constantly wanted a piece of my dinner. Not a big deal - a holiday isnt for spending eating in front of the TV in a hotel room. View The view from the balcony was fantastic and the waves lapped up against the wall next to the pool occasionally splashing the sunbathers. (A nice cool down on a typical hot day). Overall Summary You pay for what you get. It is not luxurious but you sleep in your room not live your holiday in it.
