I arrived about midnight at the Plaza Hotel to be told that despite having made and paid for a reservation in Toronto, there was no room for me as the hotel was overbooked. The stupendously unhelpful clerk advised me to walk 100 metres to another hotel ! I refused and waited 45 minutes for staff to “find” me a room. Then, I was sent to a room that wasn’t clean (cob webs, dust heaps in corners, pubic hair in shower etc.). I did not receive any message/follow-up from a Sol y Son rep until the night before I was due to leave. I advise anyone considering this hotel to rethink their decision based on my horror story !!!

The location is excellent, in the centre of old Havana, with easy walks to the waterfront, the main shopping streets and major museums. Various tour operators had desks on the first floor to arrange any tours or help with questions.
We had good service, an acceptable room with a bathroom and refrigerator. Breakfast buffets were very good with custom-made omelettes made on the spot, a fresh fruit buffet, a hot buffet, a salad buffet and bread and dessert buffet tables.
There was a 24-hour bar with food available on the first floor. Everyone was very helpful and went to unexpected lengths to help us.
We chose an "outside" room, which was a mistake as it was noisy with a school across the street from our room. This would not be a problem for early-risers.
