Beautiful Island, Scary prices

"Santorini is a beautiful island but Perissa where The Veggera Hotel is based is not the best spot. The hotel itself is the best in the area, perfectly clean, two inviting pools and genuinely friendly staff. We stayed B& B and although the breakfasts are aimed at the continental maket , ( meats, boiled eggs and bread) we found it more than adequate. Each room has a private veranda \patio and ours was a perfect sun trap.

In Perissa itself I can recommend the Yazz bar and resturant which serves great food and spot on cocktails that you can enjoy while watching the sun set over the beach. Be warned however that the beauty of Santorini comes at a price , If you want to drink spirits the prices are high, ( average of 6-7 euros a drink ). Also if you fancy scuba diving the staff at the Santorini dive centre ( just next door to Yazz ) will show you a fantastic time for a resonable price.

Elsewhere on the island Thira and Oia are well worth a vist although be warned that they are always packed with people just off the cruise ship and the prices are sky high. In Thira do not bother with the cable car , it's 4 euos each way down to the port and there is nothing there to see.

Overall we enjoyed ourselves although I wished we had stayed in Oia ( little whitewashed houses overlooking the volcano ) I would recommend the Island but do expect to spend more than on many other islands

Excellent holiday.

"Just came back from Veggera hotel in santorini (perissa) and i had the time of my life in this holiday.. there was 7 of us.. the hotel is perfect.. but make sure u dont get rooms that are underground! the staff are amazing and very helpful.. rooms cleaned on daily basis.. everything is perfect really. the hotel is exactly on the beach.. surrounded by good food places shops main road and couple of clubs n bars!...

advantage of it is that u can have the beach holiday and if u decide u want to go to the mountains it takes only 20 mins to Oia which is a must see!! also the prices r good n cheaper than most euro countries (but mayb thats bcoz we went in may?)

anyways overall... if i went again i would not think about it twice i will definitly go to this hotel ...

amazing times!!!

Good hotel - shame about the rooms

"I have recently returned from a stay at the Veggera. It is a good location if you are with people with mobility problems as it is right on the sea front at Persissa close to several tavernas and bars and also has two bars and a restaurant of its own.

The hotel looks picturesque and was very clean, sheets and towels changed every day.

The two pools are very nice and clean but there are no umbrellas by the loungers so you need to move them around to get under the trees and shrubs in the flower beds - there is no grass.

I would have rated the hotel as excellent if it had not been for the issue on the rooms and their locations - and a minor point on the boring breakfast.

I had requested a twin room on a high floor and initially was put in a double room with a 'third bed'. We were moved the following day but ended up at the back of the hotel in a basement room with a path at head height alongside our 'terrace'. As we were two middle aged women we did not feel too safe at night and the lack of a view was not good - two weeks comtemplating a flower bed at head height as we sipped our wine in the evening wasn't the best holiday experience.

There were a lot of basement rooms - some with sun loungers on the edge of the wall around the rooms so no privacy at all in the day. If you are happy to just get a room and don't care about the privacy or view then this is an excellent hotel.

The Traffico creperie was excellent, just left along the sea front as you come out of the hotel. I also loved the Volcano, great local food and wine, that was turn right out of the hotel and walk a little way. Loveliest service was at the Charlina - who also did great food. The waiters make you feel really welcome and remember you - even as you are walking past the hotel.

Buy some shoes from the supermarkets if you want to go in the sea - it is really slippery with rocks but great for swimming once you are in there.

The hotel charges for the sun loungers and umbrellas on the beach now, even if you are staying there but it is only 6 euros for the day so well worth it. They do a food and drinks service on the beach so you don't need to move at all!!

Santorini is lovely and I found it best to hire a car, there are no really bad hills or roads - just very narrow roads with lots of pedestrians and bikes. There are quite a few wineries and they do tastings, the Santo Winery has fantastic views, the Volcan Wine Museum is good.

Santorini is tranquil, serene and...

"Santorini is tranquil, serene and well worth a visit! Not too touristy, still retaining its Greek charm. The Veggera hotel is large but friendly and very close to the beach.

Rooms are clean and nicely decorated. Plenty of food establishments to choose from as well as the hotel restaurant. Plenty of excursions and sightseeing including a trip to the volcano.

Prices are reasonable and jewelry is exquisite! Would recommended this destination and hotel to anyone. We are thinking of returning there for our honeymoon.

Veggera Hotel - Good Quality Hotel in Santourini

"A group of 14 of us visited the Vegerra Hotel in Santourini (Perissa) at the end June / beginning of July this year . We were a mixed male female group of age range 35 to 60.

The Veggera hotel was of excellent standard - two lovely pools - very clean all round (towels and linen changed in the rooms every day).

It was also set in an ideal location to walk to local bars / restaurants and approx. 10 mins walk from the local bus stop which was easy to catch to other towns like the capital Fira and a beautiful town Oia approx one hour away by bus (well worth a visit just to see the sunsets and white "sugar-cube" houses set in the rocks there)

The Veggera hotel is opposite the beach at Perissa (which did not appeal to me with the black "grit-like" sand typical of the area - but others in our party enjoyed the beach itself.)

I preferred to relax by the hotel pool which was nice as fairly easy to find a comfortable sunbed and when we went there were not many children (so ideal for couples or mixed adult groups like ours looking for a relaxed atmosphere).

We initially went to the Island for a family friends' wedding - this was set in the Santos Winery and had beautiful views for the wedding photos - the winery itself was also worth a visit.

The only "niggles" with the hotel were that some of the rooms allocated were a bit small (one of our party did complain and was immediately moved without fuss) plus the buffet breakfast was a bit bland and uninteresting (typical continental-style breakfast but some variety each day would have been nice).

We stayed on a Bed and breakfast basis but understand the hotel also offers half board.

To be honest, there is an abundance of bars and restaurants all within short walking distance so in my opinion worth exploring outside of the hotel anyway (we did find the hotel menu prices a little more expensive than outside restaurants) Also ........be careful to check your change with bar bills! - several times in the hotel bars mistakes were made and we were overcharged on drink prices (again - when mentioned the problems were swiftly rectified).

We particularly enjoyed the music and cocktails at Dorians Bar - on the main road set back from the hotel - and we also found a canadian-run restaurant called Atlas - which did excellent food at reasonable prices (nice English breakfast there too).

Along the beach front the Charmina restaurant did fairly good food - with excellent service (three shaven headed waiters who were like comedy acts together - good fun)

As for Trips ..............we found booking via local tour operators (shops in the main street) cheaper than booking via the Rep.

We went on a "Big Fat Greek Night" - which was o.k - but not great. - We saw some Greek dancing and plate smashing etc. The All you can eat Greek buffet was fine but the free wine was not very palatable (shame as it was set in a winery - different one to our wedding one) - we did expect to have nicer wine. Also the entertainment was outside - which we had not expected - so we were all very cold in our summer clothes after dusk.

We also went on a Santourini Island tour - visit to the Volcano (long walk to the "top" and not much to see to be honest), Lunch at a neighbouring small Island (nice food), then drop off in Oia where we had to walk some 125 STEEP steps to the top of the hill (a couple of us did hire donkeys at this point but they only went half way anyway!) - its worth warning anyone frail or in ill health about this climb as it really knocked us out and we had not been pre-warned of it by the tour operator - there is no cable car or lift available so the only options are donkey or walking!. - having said that! the views from the top were amazing so it was worthwhile going and the full day trip itself was good value.

Overall we all said the holiday itself was a pleasant and memorable one and we would recommend Santourini - and the Veggera hotel to others.

There is not a great deal to do except eat, drink, sunbathe and chill..............so...........

I would say more for adults and couples than families but I will definitely go back there.

Wonderful Hotel

"I was very pleasantly surprised at the Veggera. My husband and I normally travel long haul and stay in 5/6 star resorts, we were a little apprehensive before the trip but were going for a wedding so not our choice. The hotel was lovely, clean, spacious although quite basic rooms and cleaned every day. The drains in our room smelt a bit but as soon as we mentioned it at reception they sent someone up to take a look and fixed the problem. There are two pool areas and the only complaint was not enough sun beds, until we found a stash around the back! Not a problem if the pool was busy however as the beach was literally across the road with hundreds of beds and umbrellas for a couple of euros and drink/snack service.

The breakfast was quite basic but enough to fill you up, fresh bread, cheese, eggs, nice coffee and great location overlooking the beach. We ate in the snack bar of the hotel most days, the food was good, great greek salad and the best pitta bread. Fantastic omlettes too. The bar was quite expensive compaired to other bars in Perissa but we loved the bar staff who always made us feel so welcome. The reception staff also couldn't do enough to help in any situation.

All in all, I would definately go back to this hotel. From looking around Perissa I think it was by far the best hotel on Perissa beach. There are of course lots of other fantastic hotels in Fira or Oia but then you don't get the beach and its only a 20eu taxi journey to Fira or you can get a quad bike out for 15eu a day - we did this and its a fun way to see the beautiful island. One tip if staying at the Veggera, there are lots of places to eat along the beach front and most of them are very nice but try the back streets, we only went there on the last couple of nights and there are some wonderful places to eat and much cheaper than on the front.

I would definately recomend this hotel.

"We have had three holidays in Santorini and each time we have stayed at the Veggera Hotel and have been highly satisfied each time.

The whole experience of the Veggera with its wonderful setting right next to the beach, breakfast outdoors each day, lovely walks along Perrisa Beach, plenty of tavernas nearby, could not be bettered.

Very helpful and friendly staff, plenty of space around the pools and of course sunsets like you never seen before, cant wait to get back in September 2006.

Didn't live up to rave reviews

"We have just returned from a week at the Veggera with First Choice (a misnoma if their service is anything to go by) and our conclusion is 'you get what you pay for'.

The hotel lies on Perissa's beach front. Apparently its the main beach on the island, with course black sand, although the facilities didn't match the expectations this boast inspires. And althugh it is descibed as "one of the most cosmopolitan and most frequented areas" the adjacent resort of Kamari felt a lot smarter (certainly it had smarter shops and restaurants).

The Veggera is very clean and the rooms are simple but smart, although -as we have heard about many Greek hotels - the beds are not very comfortable. We had a balcony, but it was at a subterranean level - so it was a bit like being at eye level with a raised flower bed, and our view/light/the sun was obscured by the vegetation. There is a jacuzzi in one of the swimming pools - so it isn't warm as the pool isn't heated. In fact the sea is warmer than the hotel pool.

The bus stop for Fira is a maximum 10 minute walk away, and it is a relatively short and not very expensive journey into the main town. You will probably need to go there as there is very little apart from the beach and pool to occupy you in this resort - if you are after a tan and little else then this is probably the right place for you. But don't expect to pick up too much in the way of gifts or mementoes. For those with limited mobility, it is set right on Perissa's beachfront and 200m from the town centre and there is a limited array of shops, bars and restaurants in town and en route. (We can recommend the nearby Traffico - best crepes this side of Brittany - Yazz's cocktail bar - especially for the early evening jazz - and the Aquarius restaurant at the far end of the promenade.)

What lets this hotel down more than anything is the cuisine. One holiday company suggests there is a "rich buffet breakfast" - substitute 'limited and repetitive' and you are closer. Perhaps it caters more for the substantial number of German and Scandanavian guests, but we expected more than melon and tinned peaches in the way of fruit. And the evening meal was particularly marred by the clash of music from the restaurant, the TV from the hotel bar and the radio from the hotel shop.

On a final note - we would recommend the trip (booked through one of the town's agencies) that included Akrotiri, the volcano walk, the hot springs and the Oia sunset.

We would strongly advise against the very expensive and mis-named 'dinner cruise' booked through your travel rep. A tea plate of mixed starters and the occasional glasss of white wine poured from a water bottle does not a dinnner make - and as you dock in a closed port to sample this 'buffet' it isn't worth the 40euros a head they charge for it.

Superb hotel...beautiful!

"Have just found this web site, so the first thing I did was to find out how this hotel was rated...was VERY supprised to see it not nearer the top of the ratings for Santorini. The hotel doesn't have the views of some of the other hotels (in oia etc), but it more than makes up for this with the overall quality of the hotel. The rooms were beautifull and cleaned every day. Staff very helpfull, and the restaurant was the best we found during our holiday.

If I ever do go back to Santorini, I will be staying here.

A wonderful Hotel

"The veggera is a beautiful hotel, by far the best in perissa, our room consisted of two single beds and one large balcony and one smaller one over looking one of the pools. Rooms are kept very clean and sheets are changed every other day beds made everyday and fresh towels everyday. The hotel has two beautiful pools each with a pool bar that are open until late. The hotel restaurant was the best we ate at whilst there and prices were no different to other restaurants. Hotel owned section of beach in front of the hotel has umbrellas and sunbeds for hotel guests to use free of charge. The staff were very helpful and very friendly, sunbeds at the pool were difficult to get in the mornings but there were plenty free in the afternoons. The continental breakfast buffet was fresh every morning. I would be hard pushed to find a fault with the hotel and had a thoroughly enjoyable and peaceful holiday at this sunny resort in a relaxing and high quality hotel."
