Just spent a week at the hotel The staff were warm, welcoming and efficent, the food was great typical Greek cuisiene and a plentiful selection of other dishes, excellent variety and good value for money.
So good in fact we plan to return for our wedding anniversary in September

After not having slept for 24hrs, we arrived at the Rodos Star Hotel at 6am. We were told where our room was and when I walked in, I was immediately hit with the aroma of stale urine - I looked in the bathroom to find a very filthy suite that clearly hadn’t been scrubbed... more

Average Hotel
My girfriend and I are both in our early twenties and we decided to take a last minute break at the Rodos Star Hotel. We stayed for a week All Inclusive, we were going to book two weeks but glad we didn't. The hotel was just... average! Firstly it was at the top of a very steep hill which most of the taxi drivers called a mountain! This would be steep in England but in 40 degree heat it feels even steeper and longer than it is - and we are a fit young couple. The hotel is quite a bit out of it in terms of places to see and things to do. The beach is about 3km away but it is pebbley and has very few facilities. My girlfriend and I got a taxi to Falaraki (12 Euros) beach which is much nicer with golden sands and lots of facilities. Afandou was nice but not good for young people, its a bit sleepy but the locals are very nice. The food at the hotel was below average. it was neither Greek or English, it was just cheap food like pasta and bad meat in sauce. We ended up eating out a lot which is a bit of a pain when we had paid for all inclusive. The rooms were very basic but the maid was very nice and she kept our room clean. We were in a twin room which was not ideal especially as my bed broke twice and I am not exactly fat (14st). Overall I would not recommend this hotel to a friend, especially a friend under 40. We would not go back either. Don't get me wrong, we both had a really good holiday but to be honest this was despite the hotel.
Af-An-Dou-A-Load-Of-Poo
Evening Campers...Hi-Di-Hi...! Greetings from Nick n Toni who had the wonderful privilige of staying at this luxury (cockroach infested) rodos star hotel from the 11th-18th August 2007!!! Now before i go any further i would like to explain to any poor bu**ers who are checking this review page out before they fly out to this hotel and destination this is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and not just one of those "wind up reviews im unfortunately been serious!" We only got back yesterday just wiped my bum and thrown toilet paper in bin...dooooh! Anyway, first of all, the worst possible start, "Mr Smiler" was on the door to welcome us at reception, no sorry, slouched over on the sofa in reception half ZzZzZin it! In complete darkness he directed us to our rooms as we held a cigarette lighter to guide ourselves, honestly douldn't Adam n Eve it! "Mr Smiler" and the rest of the very hospitable staff...NOT are all useless at their jobs, don't make any conversation with any of the guests and are all s****ing each other. Seriously! Its so unprofessional its unreal! The owners two kids are the only two members of staff i had any time for and they used to be on reception on a tea-time and they were very pleasant and helpful. "Mr Smiler" is the one who looked like a Gremlin in Gremlins goes round on the "Greek Night" to every table after you have just eaten and says to you..."Are you okay?" Which you reply "Yes" and then he swiftly moves on to the next table and says..."Are you okay?" And then to the next..."Are you okay?" Every table within two minutes holding one word conversations, its really strange and hilarious because he doesnt give you the time or day at any other time or encourage any conversation with anybody. Its as if its in the "Manual of Greek Nights"...Rule 5b once guests have eaten go round every table saying"Are you Okay?" then return to base...Deary Me!!! Ive got two words to say about the food. The first word is...Sh**e! And the second is Sh**e!!! Its cold, repetitive and looks repulsive. It also comes with an abundance of flies! The pool was never washed once while i was there and went a strange green colour come the 5th day of my holiday!!! Unfortunately we dont think it was chlorine that made it go that colour, the scary thing is we don't know what made it that colour! Then there is "Cardiac Hill!" What a killer! According to some archiologists its the highest point in Rhodes and your hotel is at the summit!!! Do not attempt walking up it in daylight, if you do tell someone what time you are leaving and what time you will be returning just in case you fall victim to the "Cardiac!":) Seriously, its steep! And when the sun is shining you must lose a few pounds after walking up it! Dont forget to take an "all inclusive" bottle of water from the shop outside reception with you! $0.50 Euros it will "all inclusively" cost you!! Hey, i liked the cleaners, they were sound. They knock every morning around 9am ish but you just stick your hand out ask 'em for a bog roll and tell 'em tomorrow if you wanna clamber back into bed and they will happy leave you alone not like some hotels when its compulsory and you have no lay in from time to time! The Polish Bar Tender on duty at night is okay. He looks like a "Porn Star." Its a pity he hasn't got 5 arms because i think thats what poor lad needs in order for the Hotel to provide an efficient service as on a busy evening he has to do everything...serve everyone, glass collect, wash up, stand on his head, iron, sing etc, etc...the poor guy's worked off his feet! Half an hour it took me to get served other night! Its not his fault though so go easy on him he dont stop! The 42 inch surround satellite TV in theory sounds WICKED in the write up!!! How disappointing! Unless you have a first class honours degree in Greek and can lip read Greek (Volume never on it!) You are laughing! Don't be expecting to watch any Premier League games on it, just Greek Basketball!!! If you have a phobia of Dogs good luck on the way down Cardiac Hill on an evening when you have a wonder into town...youll need it! Two Dogs the size of Lions (one tied up - wonder why?) are patrolling. They seem soft enough, however if you are frightened of dogs or lions it'll be a taxi for you i think. Lovely view of the village of Afandou and its surroundings including sea as you are so high up it would be...but it is beautiful, can not knock that! Last but my no means least the Entertainment was absolutely superb at the Rodos Hotel and second to none in my eyes!!! If you didn't laugh you would cry and im talking about the whole hospitable package and service from the staff!!! It was a whole "Comedy of Errors!!!" The customer never came first it was a joke!!! No "Real Entertainment" along with no "Real Food" and no "Real Alcohol!" It was very boring on a night nothing whatsoever in any form of entertainment! And, after all i drunk in alcohol terms i should have had to have had my stomach pumped 9 times over!! I was as sober as a Lord!!! Oh dear Lord!!! So on the basis of evidence shown, all in all once you've paid 'em your money, the owner doesn't give a "Monkey's" about providing you with "Entertainment", "Warm food", "Proper Alcohol" or a genuine hospitable service, why should he, he's got your money and thats all hes bothered about and once youve paid to h**l with you!!! Cheers for listening...All the best if you are on the brink of going...you'll meet some nice folk there its not all that bad, u r all in the same boat or should i say you are all on the top of Mount Cardiac!!! Enjoy...Nick n Toni (Leeds!:) )
Loved our holiday at the Rodos Star All Inclusive
We have just returned from a two week holiday at the Rodos Star. I read the other reviews and can honestly say we had a lovely time their. Management: Tassos, his wife, children and parents were lovely, very friendly. I cannot agree with person who found them money grabbing and rude. Tassos always had time for a joke and friendly chat with his guests and always asked if they had enjoyed their meals. His wife often ate in the resturant chatting to the guests. Children occassionaly worked on reception The hotel is now fully all inclusive Food: Tuesday night was Greek Night, great Greek food and entertainment. Guests participated in Greek dancing and a few silly games for the males and the females. I really enjoyed the night. Breakfast:(Buffet 7am - 9.30am) was a bit repetitive but there was a choice of cereal, beans, sausage, bacon, cheeses, cooked meat a selection of maramalde and bread to toast or bread rolls, lovely yogurt and honey. Fruit juice, tea, coffee and biscuits. Lunch; (Buffet 12.30pm - 2.00pm) Served in the pool bar(open from 10am for drinks) A selection of meats, fish, chips, pizza and salads and vegetables. All drinks and ice creams are included. Dinner: (Buffet 7.30pm - 9.00pm) Soup, salads, fish, meats, mousaka and other Greek dishes, Greek puddings, ice cream, mousse, yogurt and the most juicy melons I have ever tasted. Food was always hot and tasty. I cannot fault anything other than we were their for two weeks so the second week was repeated, however because I enjoyed the food I looked forward to eating it again Rooms; Twin beds with bedside table and lamp, plenty of storage for clothing, dresing table and mirror. Balcony with table and chairs Small bathroom but very nice. Rooms are very clean and cleaning staff very friendly. Can been hot (Air conditioning &euro per day) Tassos is planning to have a TV and fridge in rooms next year. Staff; We had some great fun with all the staff. They were Greek, Polish and Slovakian, all spoke quite a lot of English, but had fun trying to understand each other while having a conversation about their country and lives. Pool Never saw the pool dirty the hotel was full so it was always busy. They were a lot of small children, Tassos had not anticipated this since the hotel became all inclusive, so next year he is hoping to have a play area for them. THE HILL; My partner and I are between 40-50yrs old and fit we had no problems walking up the hill. We didnt think it was that bad. Some people in the hotel were elderly, they walked down the hill and taxied up. I have to say no one was that bothered about the hill as the hotel got a breeze which you didnt get in Afando village. Tassos is hoping to have shuttle bus next year to ferry guests to the beach and back (about 25mins walk from the hotel) Overall We had a fab time. What you have to remember is, this is a 3* hotel and I found it great for the price we paid. Would have liked free air con. Didnt hire a car (will next time)but lots of guests did and toured the island for less than we paid out in excursions. Lindos by sea and Rhodes Old Town is a must. Was disapointed with Falaraki. beach was too crowded. Afando is full of friendly Greeks I loved spending time down their. Visit Nigel in the English bar Simply The Best - great fun and sky sports. Will visit this island again and would return to the Rodos Star
never go there
we booked with on the beach holidays and if you are thinking of booking this holiday don't because the hotel has no air-con and the place is filthy the chef puts the food out with a fag in his hand about to handel the food that we are about to eat. The drinks, food and ice-cream were so bad my children were crying that they were hungry so we would take them down to the village (down the very steep hill and back) to feed them in Anna's Bar which was lovely. My thoughts are that no travel company should be recommening this hotel until (if it does?) clean up it's act, I would love health and safety to go there because they would shut the place down it is that bad.
Think Before You Book!
We have just returned from a fortnights all inclusive holiday in the Rodos Star and if it hadn't been for the company we met, our holiday would of been a disaster! The weather was fantastic and the hotel (building and location)were great but there is a problem - the owner!! He is the most arrogant man we have ever met and treats his staff despicably! In front of guests?? Don't go to this hotel if you are looking for entertainment - there is none!! During our fortnight there were 2 "Greek nights" (both identical)- where the owners family were the most welcomed and catered for out of all the guests!! The hotel holds a prime position on the top of a hill (which we were aware of) with fantastic views, but because of its location, the owner should consider his guests far more and capatalise on this - organise a courtesy bus or car(or a small charge - less than the taxis!!) running a few times daily/nightly, especially back up the hill!!, to the friendly villiage of Afandou - hire a member of staff to co-ordinate entertainment during the day and at night - the food got Very repetitive as the fortnight past and many of the all inclusive guests were venturing from the hotel on many occasions seeking alternative foods - ( A big thank you to Andrea and the guys at the Neon restaurant who made us very welcome and served some fantastic food ) Can't fault the cleanliness of the rooms - the maids were friendly and thorough - but the pool could do with a daily "sweep" due to the amount of foliage and flowers surrounding the pool area! Oh! - and the pool area is next to the dining area where we ate lunch(right next to it! ) but you get told off should any water from the pool go near the tables and chairs!! Design fault - not the guests! This could be a gold mine of an hotel if it was properly managed and ran - the only reason i can say it is prospering is because it is the only hotel in Afandou that welcomes all inclusive guests !!
Quiet location. Nice hotel, friendly staff
I have recently spent a very enjoyable week at the Rodos Star, & it was very good value for money. FOOD - Excellent! As it was the start of the season, there weren't enough people for the buffet for the first few days of our holiday. Instead, we got a 5 course meal . I am a fussy vegetarian & was very well looked after the whole week, with different local specialities each day. My vegetarian main meal was still served to me when dinner became buffet, so there was no problem of contamination from meat. Tassos, the manager, was lovely - I can't recognise him from the money-grabber described in other reviews. ROOMS - There are still no fridges or tv's in the rooms, but Tassos informed us that these will be provided by next year. Spotlessly clean. THE HILL - The hotel is at the top of a very steep hill, in a quiet location overlooking the town. I never walked up it once - my hire-car could barely make it! The hotel has a pool with a bar although we didn't see it open as we were always out during the day. The main bar area is the only area for evening entertainment, so there's not really much to do. Generally people walked down to the town's numerous bars (and took a taxi back up!) I'm afraid I can't comment on how good or bad a deal the hotel provides on car-hire, as we booked ours independently before we went.
what a disgrace, this is a must read!!
well, where to start, we are a young couple, stayed half board from 13th july- 27th july....... rooms: large but with a tiny bathroom. No soap available u have to buy ur own. no t.v. and NO fridge to keep water in, this i find unacceptable! Food: awful. the breakfast consists of boiled egg, beans, buscuits, cereals and rock hard bread. thats it, every morning the same old crap. in two wks we got bacon once. however u can buy a full english from the snack bar! how ridiculous u should get it every morning half board! the evening meal was ok but only if your not fussy. basically its either fish, pork, chicken, lamb or turkey we only had beef once and apparantly veal twice. only got chips twice in two wks! very poor selection and the food is always just warm not hot! how anyone didnt get ill im suprised. oh yeah and there is no vegetarian option....ever! unless u want to live on salad ur whole stay. service: amazing, all the staff are friendly and helpful. exceptions to this are the management! the owner himself and his wife are extremely rude and are only interested in money! and the guy who runs the restaurant is constantly miserable. the pool: was clean for the first week we were there when there wasnt many people there after that it turned green and had loads of mud and dirt all over the bottom and it stunk, if u went in u smelt when u came out. it was not cleaned before we left! entertainment: complete lack of! had one bbq- awful, smoke everywhere, the food was pink. had a keyboard player twice who is awful!!!! sounds like music u hear on hold on the phone and he cant sing to save his life!! only thing in the hotel is a pool table. cleanliness: the cleaners were in everyday bar a sunday, were always in first thing and were very good, always pleasant and the service was spot on. the hill: i should say mountain! u must hire a car the hotel is situated in the middle of nowhere. afandou town is nice but lacks an atmosphere. do not rent a car from the hotel, its cheaper to do it from bakaris rent a car in the town. people goin to rodos star all inclusive be warned, there is a set menu for ur dinner and u can only order after 12.30. water is not included, ur only allowed four different types of cocktails and only get ur free drinks till 11pm. if ur children are fussy do not go all inclusive. the snack bar prices are extausionate! and everything is just microwavable i.e pizzas, spag bol, chicken burgers, all microwaved. sunbeds: most are broken and the cushions on top are always wet and do not dry in the sun til bout 4pm, manky! air con: costs 7 euros a day, which is a rip off and doesnt start working with cold air til bout 30mins after switched on. to keep ur room on 6hours its 20 euros and for 12hours 40 euros!!! mini market: well theres not much selection and the sun creams and aftersun has been there for so long their covered in dust and dirt! we bought some oil and it made our skin come out in a rash! i will say its cheap though. big screen t.v.: its not a big screen its about 28" and all they play is greek programs and never have the sound on!!! all in all..... staff excluding the management are brilliant, extremely friendly and helpful and always have a laugh with u. management - disgraceful, rude only interested in money! its clean apart from the pool. food - disgusting. i would not go again as its a 2* hotel if that and nothing more. if ur looking for a basic holiday and dont mind eating anything they put in ur face and u just want to stay in the hotel, then the rodos star is for u. personally its a rip off for what u get...which is nothing and not worth it for two wks. this hotel is for elderly people looking for quiet and secluded holidays, not for families or young people.
not bad not good
Positives: -Price -Views -Tranquility -Clean rooms Negatives: -Average British food, not Greek -Attitude of management to complaints -Gradient of hill the hotel sits on -Cleanliness of pool (or lack of) As can be seen the negatives expressed slightly outweigh the positives, however, I would not like to totally discourage anyone from considering a budget break at this hotel. The attitude of the management was to sweep complaints under the carpet without dealing with them. Although the management proved difficult to deal with the rest of the staff proved to be very friendly and helpful. If you are only looking for a base to sleep in while eating out in the village of Afandou (which we found to be an excellent centre) then price may be the overriding factor.
Horrible rodos star
We just return from 1 week holiday in Rothes. We choose Rodos Star hotel because the description of this hotel was very good. The hotel is situated in a hill, there is nothing else there, just the hotel. The rooms are Ok, 2 single beds with bathroom and a balcony but if you want air conditioner, you have to pay 6 € per day. The food is horrible, i was expected to find Greek food but we just found feta cheese, other options were tipical british food: chicken, beans, sausages, bacon.... the bread was very, very hard. If you go to that hotel, you must rent a car except if you want to spend your holidays in hotel,s swimming pool. The hotel offers car rental. We rented a 4X4 car for 1 week, the car was very old and they said that was new. One early morning, we were slepping and the manager came to our room saying that he needed to fix the car and they gave another car for that day. The car older than the another car, very small for 4 persons and without petrol. We spent that day with that "fantastic" car and the next morning we asked about the 4X4 car that we had rented, we waited 2 hours for "our" car and they gave back to us without petrol. We reclaimed to the receptionist and she was laughing of us, we went to the police and they contacted with the manager of the car company by phone, because the police didn,t speak english, my friend spoke with the manager. He shouted and threatened to my friend. Finally the hotel.s manager toped up the petrol after discussed with us. The management of this hotel is horrible, just looking for money desperaly.
Not a bad hotel, shame about the hill though!
The Rodos Star hotel in Afandou is a pleasant hotel sat on the top of quite a steep hill. The hotel itself is clean and the rooms are not a bad size at all. The staff are very friendly and the pool area is large enough for all of the guests (well, it was in July). We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis, we only made breakfast once, not too much of a selection to be honest. The dinners were average, so we ate out more often than not; more catering for the masses than traditional Greek dining. The staff were very helpful and flexible when it came to needing our room for an extra day. There is also a little shop in the hotel, which was very handy for buying water and snacks if the trek down to the town was too much to contemplate! All in all we had a very enjoyable stay and would probably return.
