May 2007, Mrs K Southern

On arrival at the hotel I thought we would be turned away as we arrived at 09:30 and the room was not supposed to be ready until 14:00, however they gave us the key to our room straight away.
The room was very basic and small but it served the purpose we needed and was fairly clean.
The food was fine a good variety for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a snack bar that serves hamburgers, hot dogs, and chips next to the pool. The food in the restaurant was labelled on most foods. They do appreciate if you clear your plates onto a trolley a lot of guests didn't though.
The hotel had a lot of Spanish guests in for my first few days however they all left around the 8th of May. The hotel was then full of English! The entertainment in the evening consisted of a quiz, bingo a kid’s hours then a show.
During the day there was water polo, kids painting, cycling, plus lots more especially for the kids.
The entertainment team was fairly young but they tried their best to keep you entertained.
The resort centre is a good 20 minutes walk however there is a free shuttle bus to the
Beach every morning except Sunday and returns late afternoon, we used this a lot.
The balconies in the rooms need changing as there is a gap at the end and I was frightened for my 2 year old son. I kept the patio door shut unless I was watching.
There are 2 swimming pools, one has a children’s section however they had not warmed up and they were freezing! In summer they would be fine though.
All in all we had a good time; the hotel is definitely for people on a budget as it is basic especially the rooms.
I would return if I wanted a cheap break as the food was fine and it was value for money.

My fiancé and I have just returned...

Apr 2007, smokey

My fiancé and I have just returned from a week’s holiday at the Villamarina Club hotel.
We arrived on Friday 6th April at 3.30pm to check in at reception, after handing over our passport to the hotel receptionist, we were given our keys and then asked to follow him to our room.
Thinking that he was being very helpful we followed, only to be led through a service entry and out into the street. He then pointed along to a building at the far end of the street and told us that this accomodation.
We had to carry our own luggage along to this building and were left to negotiate stairs, lift and more stairs.
On closer inspection we discovered that this was an apartment block and was used by 18-25 years old, who at 3.30pm were running from room to room and playing loud music.
We immediately returned to the hotel to be told there were no rooms, despite having booked this holiday 4 months previously. We demanded to be given a room in the hotel as that what we had paid for.
After lengthy discussions and exchange of views they found us a room at the hotel!
The room was fine as was the cleanliness of the hotel. Bar staff and serving staff were very helpful and pleasant, although the hotel entertainment was very dated and only catered for Spanish speaking guests.
Having spoken to a tour rep we found out that others had been farmed out to apartment blocks much further away from the main resort.
This same rep told us that from November - April this is the Spanish saga holiday season! We found the other older Spanish guest to be very rude and ignorant.
This hotel could be improve by having more courteous staff on reception and by providing entertainment for all its guests.

The hotel looked clean at first...

Apr 2007, Miss C Whitehead

The hotel looked clean at first sight. After one night we soon found out the drains were bad therefore attracting COCKROACHES!!!! The smell was unbelievable and made us feel very sick.
The first night we found them was after a day trip to Barcelona ending at 11.30pm, we was all tired and wanted our beds. As we got back to our room and opened the door there was 3 or 4 cockroaches running around on the floor.
My two children saw this and was afraid to go back into the room! We went to reception to report what we had seen, unfortunately the man decided he could no longer speak English (through choice). We eventually got a room change but this wasn’t our first or last, we moved another 4 times due to the stench of bad sewerage and cockroaches in the rooms!
We were given champagne as a way of apology, we weren’t the only ones either we saw other families with the bottles and asked them why they had been given the drink. In all cases the same had happened to them what had happened to us.
This seems to be at the beginning of the season when the hotel hasn’t been open long, so Eva the hotel manger told us. Eva was very helpful and kind shame about the drains!
The entertainment was repetitive, the drinks were good and so was the food. Except on the last day (which I am glad to say this happened on the last day) we saw a cockroach in the dining area...ewwww...had I have seen this at the beginning of my holiday I wouldn’t have eaten a thing in the hotel and as my holiday was all inclusive I would have been practically skint and would have been able to go on any of the wonderful days trips available!

3 / 10
Mar 2007, Mr C Turner

Myself and my girlfriend (age 22 and 23 respectively) have just returned from a 4-night stay at the Villamarina Club. (11 March to 15 March)
Our flight to Spain was actually enjoyable. However, on arrival at Barcelona airport, our luggage was sent to a different terminal to where we arrived.
So we missed our transfer to the hotel in Salou (apparently, a 120km journey), that is if a transfer was even arranged (we still believe that wasn't the case).
However, it cost us way over £100 to pay for a taxi to the resort (on the advice of people at the information desks in Barcelona Airport)
On arrival at the hotel, our opinions were quite high. The hotel front looked nice, and the reception area was clean and tidy, and the man on the front desk was helpful and got us checked in quickly.
However this opinion soon changed. On entering the building where we were staying, we were hit by a distinctive sewage smell.
Thankfully this did not carry into our room (but then there were at least three Glade air fresheners in our room, which probably overpowered the smell of sewage).
The room itself was quite small. And at first we thought we didn't have any lights, that was until we realised you had to put a swipe card into a slot by the door for any of the electrics in the room to work.
Something the guy on the front desk neglected to tell us. While, yes, we had a balcony, room 108 was on the ground floor and facing the garden of the property next door - meaning our view was entirely tree trunks!
I've read elsewhere of poor cleanliness in rooms. To be honest, our room was fairly clean and tidy, and the maids came in every day and re-made the beds, put in fresh towels and emptied the bin.
The staff generally didn't seem all that helpful. While there was the odd staff member who was polite and helpful, the woman who was mostly on the front desk while we were there was extremely unhelpful.
If you tried to ask her for help or information she talked to you down her nose, as if you were intruding. And on one afternoon, my girlfriend and I were having a "siesta" in our room when one of the cleaning ladies opened the door, to give us an air freshener!!
This was a total invasion of privacy, and of course there was no way of locking the door shut so that you could make sure it wouldn't be opened from outside.
The hotel did put on a nice array of buffet food. However, none of it was marked so you had to guess what you were eating. Another problem we found with the food was that the evening meal at 20:00 to 22:00 was far too late at night.
However, once you found food you liked, the food was very nice, and probably the only thing I liked about this Hotel. However, on the flipside, the cutlery, plates and glasses were far from clean!
You get the opinion that the glasses were merely rinsed out. Halfway through drinking a glass of water, you found things floating in it. In this area of cleanliness, the hotel failed.
Another problem encountered in the restaurant, and indeed throughout the hotel, was from most of the other residents: Spanish pensioners who had no manners whatsoever. They barged in front of you everywhere, barging in while you were politely queuing. We did actually start to question if we'd paid to spend a few nights in a Spanish old folks' home.
FlyGlobeSpan's website advertises this hotel with 2 pools. Which, indeed, the hotel did have. However, one was empty. And the other was green (much like a garden pond that had been neglected for months).
Also, the website advertised night time entertainment. Which, indeed, there was. However, for those of us not fluent in Spanish (or those that don't speak Spanish at all), the entertainment was no use.
The resort of Salou itself is very nice. In particular, Salou seems to come to life between 16:00 and 20:00 with most shops open for business during these hours.
The Villamarina was a 15 minute walk from the beach, and had a supermarket just around the corner. On Mondays there's a substantial market which was a small hidden treasure trove!
The beach itself was lovely, very clean. In fact, we saw a tractor with a specially adapted trailer drive up and down the beach. This trailer scooped up the sand and basically lifted out any litter.
The "main drag" was very pleasant, with a footpath down one side of the road lined by palm trees.
I'd certainly visit Salou again, however I'd probably stay in somewhere on a self-catering basis.
Salou has many small supermarkets as well as one large one, that we found, so there's a good choice of foods available, as well as the fact there are many nice cafes and restaurants round about, and I'd arrange my own transport in future (i.e. a hire car).
My advice? Don't go to Villamarina Club! If you have the choice of the Villamarina and one of the benches at the beach, then choose the bench!

On arriving at Villa Marina we found...

Jan 2007, Miss PO Sanderson

On arriving at Villa Marina we found they had double booked us. We ended up in the self catering apartments which were lovely and clean and very spacious.
The staff were always pleasant and smiling. There are two pools situated at Villa Marina both were clean and nice and cool to get away from the heat of the day. The kid’s entertainment was brilliant as was the adults.
The food was brilliant which was good for the fussy eaters among us. There was a wide variety and always fresh fruit etc.
The only downfall was that it is a distance from the bars and clubs but it only takes a short taxi ride to get there.
The beach nearby was also a short walk away however lovely all the same.

Nov 2006, Mr B Finlay

This is the first time we have been all inclusive and we have loved it. We read all the reviews about the hotel before we travelled and there were some bad ones but also some very good ones so we thought we would give our own opinion.
We enjoyed our holiday very much. The Villa Marina is a nice hotel with very hard working staff and very pleasant as well.
We made great friends, customers and staff, and we would love to go back again.
The food is very nice, plenty of choice, the entertainment is fantastic and it is true, Eva the manager is amazing. I must admit, she is a credit for this hotel.
I would recommend the Villa Marina for families.

Hotel was clean small rooms, ok for what we paid for nothing special.
Only complaint I have got is staff were very rude and ignorant especially bar staff (except for Jesus he was very friendly) and at about 11pm every night the security arrived for last orders were very intimidating to the children really scared my 7 year old daughter.
The entertainment was very dated overall not a bad holiday can’t complain too much for a 3* hotel definitely go up a star next year.

I had booked our holiday to villa...

Oct 2006, Mrs Lyn Bennett

I had booked our holiday to villa marina then read the truth sites and we panicked because there were many bad reviews, this was our 1st ever holiday aboard and we were very worried. We thought well we will just have to make the best of it after all you make your own fun if it’s boring.
We arrived about 11.00am didn’t think we could get in until later but we were given our bands and we was told you have booked 4 rooms but you have got 8, "we are putting you into the apartments".
I had read reviews about the apartments and I new they was supposed to be very nice, if I didn’t no it was a bit off putting being led out a back door to a dead end road, but when we see the apartments they were lovely.
The people in the apartment had their own pool but also use of the other 2 at the hotel.
We had cleaners come in every day with fresh towels, sheets, and had a clean around.
The food we couldn’t find fault with it, something different every day at every sitting, when the dinner hall was not open you had the burger/hotdog bar out by the pool area. Drinks soft or alcoholic were always available.
The entertainment was good every night and different the whole time we were there (2weeks). The hotel is a fair walk from the beach but we didn’t find that a problem you can get the free bus or walk and look in shops.
Salou is a very nice place to visit the only thing we didn’t like is the flies but they are not as bad as some pest in other countries. (They don’t like the buzz off spray.)
We had 14 day passes to the theme park and we paid £52 from the internet and it’s a lot cheaper than buying them there. It is a must if you like theme parks and rides. I cannot understand why people gave bad reviews because what they moaned about I didn’t find any problems.
I would recommend villa marina to my friends and family and I would go back there again. So well done and thank you to all the staff at villa marina for making our first holiday enjoyable.

After reading the reviews before...

Oct 2006, Miss L Curtis

After reading the reviews before going on this holiday our party was quite worried but we need not have.
We arrived late Tuesday night at the hotel and received a very friendly welcome, we were given our key and told were our room was, the room was very small but clean and tidy.
The hotel was also kept as clean and tidy as could be possible which was I can only assume quite hard considering some of the slobs that were staying there. The food was delicious and varied something for everyone.
If you don't like children with unruly parents then this isn't the hotel for you we never had any complaints about doors slamming or kid screaming, but we wouldn't have heard over the noise of the generator outside our room. (Room 28 noise like an aeroplane) the entertainment staff worked very hard and tried to accommodate all ages kids, adults and older folk, and a show every night (quite good and all)
The hotel was a bit of a distance from the beach but there is a free bus daily, the Port Aventura theme park is only a taxi ride away and will be called for you by the reception staff you only have to ask (only costs 7 euro) and if you fancy a walk to the beach you can get a little blue train right to the door for 2.50 euro.
There are lots of other places that you can visit, try Barcelona you can pay 24.oo euro and get a full excursion to the football club and fountains and get some shopping time in too great day out, Tarragona is also a beautiful place one not to miss if you enjoy sight seeing. all in all the holiday was great, food brill staff great and ale free what more could you ask for Villa Marina Club may see you again!

Oct 2006, Mr M Parker

Came back from here 26th Sep from Reus to Luton.
We had a great time, except a word of warning before I continue. Its not the best idea to go in the top end of the main weeks
The rooms are modern, bit small but cleaned every day and comfortable. The rooms on the corridor by the steps near to the bar, are not as modern as the other rooms. The entertainment is by a British run company "let us entertain you". The manager Eva will do anything she can to help you. You get served quick at bar early evening but as the night goes on there’s a 5-10min wait. There’s 2 pools one with a pool side snack bar .
Some people queued up for sun loungers but this wont be the case off peak. Food - there was a large selection each evening but if you stay 2 weeks, food may be a bit to re-occurring, but they also had an excellent carvery each evening to.
Kids will love it.
You have to walk through the town (one long street) and then your at the lovely beach. There’s a bus shuttle, from 10.30-11.30 each morning and its picks you up at 4pm, no need to book or go on both ways , just hop on.
I rate this holiday 8/10
Please disregard the bad reviews, these are most likely from people not used to AI in the main weeks.

Just returned from a weeks all...

Oct 2006, Mrs K Fyffe

Just returned from a weeks all inclusive holiday in Villamarina. We had a fantastic time. Myself, my husband and our 3 year old son traveled with two other couples and their young children.
I must say that prior to our departure I was dreading this hotel having read the really bad reviews. We were however pleasantly surprised. This hotel, although the rooms were very basic was fantastic value for money.
The food was brilliant both at meal times and snacks provided throughout the day and night. The entertainment for the kids was superb and our kids loved it.
The hotel and rooms were very clean and I have no complaints about the cleanliness.
We found everything free and even when we asked for non-local drinks, which were not covered under the all inclusive, we found the drinks to be very cheap and reasonably priced. Although the hotel had an opportunity to make money from things such as this they didn't.
On the day of our departure we asked and were allowed to keep our room on until 5.00 pm. We could not believe this only cost us 15 Euros. Most hotels we have stayed at in the past would charge at least 3 times for this service.
I feel that anyone traveling to the Villamarina will be given very good service and this is definitely great value for money.
I would say to the people who have given this Hotel bad reviews to perhaps pay a bit more if they are looking for something more but in my opinion, as was the opinion of the people we met at the hotel with kids, this is definitely a kid orientated hotel and if the kids are happy the parents are happy.
I do not think however I would recommend this hotel to couples looking for a quiet holiday as of course where there are kids there is noise, but it was all very good fun. Would definitely go back to this hotel in the future.

Oct 2006, Mrs J Noble

We booked all-inc. for the price. My hubby and I took my sister away for a birthday surprise and as this restricted our spending, we had to take one room for all three of us. (Not a problem as we get on well) So, the room was fairly small for 3 adults but if you stay tidy and don't live in your room, no problems.
The staff were great, there when you needed them but not in your face. Room and towels done daily. Bar area got mucky but only because people seemed unable to find either an ashtray or a bin. The area was cleaned when there was room which wasn't often as the Brit disease of getting up and drinking from nine just because it's all-inclusive had taken hold.
Noise was heavy due to wooden flooring on the landing, but if you buy ear plugs, it's no problem he he. Value for money can't be beat, but with that you get what you pay for.
