Just returned from a two week, last minute holiday and had a fantastic time. My wife, me and our 11yr old daughter were picked up by a happy and smiling Penelope at 5.45am at the transfer drop off and taken to the apartments a short ride away. The apts are basic, but clean and well maintained and have fantastic views of the bay and the mountains. The apts are no more than a leisurely 20 min walk from the centre of Elounda and the beach, which is nice, quite busy without being overcrowded with plenty of bars, snack bars and shops a few minutes walk away. The locals are very freindly whether you are using their restuarant/bar/shop or not and will stop and answer any question happily. Plenty of fantastic, right on the bay restaurants with freshly caught fish a speciality, really spoilt for choice. There are no busy nightclubs to attract the 18-30 crowd but rather a few late night clubs and bars if you want them. Penelope and her family are lovely hosts and we will be returning again next year.

The Penelope Apts are situated on the outskirts of Elounda but not too far away from all that Elounda has to offer. Set slightly elevated among olive groves and in a peaceful setting you would probably think that you were 'out in the sticks' but when you see the view from the pool - it'll take your breath away! The apts are basic but clean, the pool area is a new addition and most welcoming for those of you who don't want to shift. There is a pool bar but beware if you are late nighters because Penelope rarely opens beyond 11.00pm! There is a real 'with nature' feeling about the place - you will be woken by the cock-a-doodle-doing every morning followed by a few goats bleating and the church bell tolling on a Sunday morning - what more could you wish for? A few times I almost felt like Anthony Quinn was going to pop out and dance 'Zorba's dance'! Seriously, this is a good base to have that peaceful well earned relax - and then a leisurely stroll down a small meandering road to the main road (10mins) where 20 mins further you will be in the main square/harbour of Elounda where tavernas and bars and resturants line the square and a public beach. If you do not want to walk this route too offer there are a few bars, resturants etc on the causeway overlooking Mirabello Bay. I have been visiting Elounda for the past 13 years and try to stay at as many varied apts as I can. If you require 3* and above then you may want to consider Olive Grove, Manos or Alykes apts but if you want an away from it all true Greek experience you will love the laid back natural beauty of the Penelope and its surrounding grounds.
- Advice: Unspoilt, traditional, picturesque and postcard quaint , best of all unchanged year after year
- Activities: Elli's place, Andreas grill, Zorbas, Vordem. Spinalonga and Plaka worth a visit

Me and my partner stayed here for 2 weeks and we had a lovely time. The apartment is basic, but all we used it for was sleeping and showering so that was fine. Other people staying there did cook meals, and were fine. It is about a 15 min walk from the centre of Elounda so is nice a quiet, and has amazing views over the bay. The pool is lovely and the food/drinks at the pool bar are very reasonable. Pinelope, who runs the apartments, works behind the bar and is very nice, and helped make our holiday.
If you don't mind a little walk into, and back from the centre of an evening then you will like it here...although there are other tavernas nearby.

we are going back to the penelope(pronounced pinolope) after the lady who runs the apts.this is a fantastic base for your holiday.it has a 2* rating but why??? these apts are spotless, the swimming pool has fanatastic views overlooking the bay set in a peaceful surrounding.if u want a quiet day round the pool this is ideal.if your peckish, pinelope does really nice pizza and greek salads.the poolside bar is plentiful and after a night in elounda its lovely to sit round the bar next to the pool and chat with other guests.we have made many friends staying here.it doesnt matter that is it not in the heart of the village as the walk up and down to the village is not bad.your on holiday so relax and enjoy.there is one small downside which i dont like to mention but i feel i should.it is beyond anyones control!!!! there is a cockeral that crows about 4ish in the morning.however the answer is to drink plenty of raki and ouzo to knock u out.we are going tonite for the 3rd time as this apt so the bird cant be too bad!!!!!!!!!

we stayed at the penelope apartments (just me and hubby and left the kids with family)on arrival, the apartments were very basic - reminiscent of my greek island holidays in the 1980's. in the morning, on opening the patio doors was welcomed by a terrific view of the gulf of mirabella and elounda. very quiet to stay there. swimming pool elevated with views. really greek and quiet. would travel back there again.lovely poolside bar with snacks served by penelope. if you are expecting luxury then dont stay here, but if you want to get a taste of real greece surrounded by olive trees, cicadas and greek cats then go here. wonderful.... thank goodness there is some real greece left... it would be wise though to get some cockroach spray as at night we were visited by a few nosy friends.....

Basic accommodation but excellent views, pool and bar/food area. About 10-15mins walk into the town where there are a great number of restaurants and bars. A good resort for a pleasant holiday. No manic bars but busy.

I STAYED AT THE PENELOPE APARTMENTS, in July 2011. i went for two weeks with my two teenage daughters and my parents.
Penelope gave us two rooms next to one another as she is so lovely and kind. there basic but what you would expect. my daughter is in a wheelchair so when we were told we were up the hill i was like OMG
but Penelope picks you up and drops you down on return. we all enjoyed the walk back and forth every other day as the walk is not as far as we first thought. the pool is the best ever, the view and the service Penelope give's is great. they make you feel like family. and her parents are so lovely and her mum (nana) we called her makes lovely cakes.
so glad we stayed there. Elounda and all the surrounding areas are great to and a short walk. we did it all and had to push a wheelchair. i will state i wouldn't recommend taking young children as there is not allot to do, and the weather was way to hot. (shouldn't complain) they have internet pubs and restaurants most are free.
if you decide to go then read or take with you the book "The Island" this is based on spinalonga and the little village plaka but allso Elounda.
great book and great place to visit.
I have always said i would never go back to a place i have been, but this is one place i will return. beautiful and every where makes you feel like your family.
