Simple Greek accommodation. Large...

Sep 2006, Miss C O'Keeffe

Simple Greek accommodation. Large rooms with single beds - only one double bed in complex. We requested this and didn't get it. Then were told we had booked a 2/3 room and so we couldn't move up to the next floor which had great views.
So I wouldn't bother trying to reserve the double! Pool is really lovely and quiet. Snack bar is great for drinks and light food. Accommodation is on the main road up from 'centre' - it is the very last hotel though so a good 45 minute walk downhill to the centre. We didn't try to walk back up! There was a bus that left every hour or so until about 6pm.
A few good restaurants within 5-10 minute walk and a supermarket. More expensive restaurants down by the centre and the harbour. Only two taxis in the resort so unlikely you will be able to get one back up if you do decide to go down there in the evening.

Jan 2006, Miss G Wilmore

Room was very, very basic!!! No air conditioning, but this didn't make much difference to us as we were fairly sheltered from the sun. However, as we only used the room for sleeping it was fine.
Paleo itself was nice, but the complex was quite a walk away from the main bars and clubs. There also isn't a foot path, which is fun!!
Very well situated for food, best we found was miltados (or something like that) corner. Family run restaurant with the most friendly man in the world bar none!
Would recommend if you wanted a quiet holiday! And a word of warning...... don't climb up to the castle, if a tour guide says that it only takes an hour each way, they lied!!

We booked a budget family holiday for...
8 / 10
Jul 2005, Mr G Davies

We booked a budget family holiday for 6, four generations of us, ranging from age 8 to 72. Reading through most reviews we also wondered what we were letting our selves in for, we did feel a little better however, reading the review from the couple who went in June 2005, just before us.
On arrival, we found our apartments to be right at one end of Paleo, about a mile and a half from the main part. Paleo seems to be all along one winding road, much of which does not have a footpath, so be careful when walking around.
The apartments were basic, nothing to write home about, (typical of Greece apparently), but it was a place for sleeping and that’s all we expected really. The real strength of the place for us was the pool and pool bar. They were lovely; the staff were brilliant and really friendly. They loved the kids, and the pool was always clean and tidy. If you want a lazy week around a quiet pool then this could be what you're looking for! Daytime snacks/breakfasts were nice, but be prepared to wait if you order several things or they have a few customers.
Eating out was also very nice. There are 3 main tavernas within easy walking distance and were all reasonably priced. They all served a good selection of Greek food and whilst they are obviously there to cater for tourists, it did feel quite authentic. Two of them held regular Greek nights which were fun.
Getting around: If you don’t mind walking this is probably your best option! It cost around 6 euros in a taxi to get to Paleo centre, which isn’t bad, and the bus cost 1 euro each. The bus service was not very reliable however; you could wave the bus down though in between stops if you wanted to set off walking, but that’s a risk. They are also VERY busy, and the last bus back is 6.30.
The Grotta was a 10 minute (ish) walk where you could get taxi boats to the small beaches. We had a fantastic time on one of the smaller beaches and even had it to ourselves for a while. The snorkelling was good also as the sea is very clear. The taxi boat will pick you up at a time you arrange and we also got to look in some of the caves on the return journey, so don’t be afraid to ask for this before you set off to the beach.
We got a lift up to the tiny village of Krini where the 13th Century castle ruins are (Angelokastro), from a local man with a minibus who ferries tourists up for free (although we did give him some euros).
We did not go up the ruins, it is very steep and not for the elderly. We were also 'trapped' there until the evening when the mini bus made it's return journey, but the waiter at the Horse taverna drew us a map and we walked through the olive groves in the shade down to Lakones, where the Bella Vista was (a hotel at a fantastic viewing point), We had a swim in their pool and got a lift back from the man with the minibus. It's worth going up for the views.
All in all a very good holiday for the money we paid, just don’t expect hustle and bustle. It is very relaxing, people don’t stir until around 10 ish, don’t be put off by the bad comments, we think the pool has probably made all the difference. (Watch out for the wasps all around the resort, they don’t seem to sting when wafted away, but are very annoying as they like to climb into your drinks).

LISSIPIO
Returned from 2 weeks at the Lissipio, having read a few reviews before we left we did wonder what we had let ourselves in for?
I can only say that we were nicely surprised the accommodation was basic but had a kettle and shower curtain which is very rare.
During the first 3 days the weather was a bit dodgy and the water was never hot we assumed it was solar panel heating only to find out by remembering to look that this was not the case. Having spoken to the owner this was rectified immediately and in a very friendly manner.
The swimming pool and pool bar are new for 2005 which we had no idea of when we booked and very nice and clean the prices for the drinks were also very good.
The only down side was the fact the sheets and towels only got changed twice but the rooms and bins were done 4-5 times.
TAVERNAS
Three within a 2-5 min walk and one snack bar.
Mitialadis Corner I would rate 9/10
Oasis 8/10
Spiros 10/10
The Spiros was our personal favourite run by a lovely family on a Tuesday and Saturday they do a BBQ I can highly recommend this as I had the Lamb and my partner the selection of meat. Irene is the daughter and will always find time to talk to you and help you in anyway she can.
They have a Traditional Greek evening with the Son and Cousin of the family doing the dancing and ring of fire.
All 3 are good but Spiros and Mitialadis are more traditional with real Home-Made Food.
CAR-SCOOTER HIRE
We hired a scooter from George who seems to have the Monopoly, but there are another 2 in the area we just hired from George as it was on our doorstep.
We managed to see all we wished, roads are Good NO POT HOLES that we came across and the little 50cc we had got us up all the hills we managed to get to Kassiopi.
WALKS
Liapades Village is well worth the 40 min walk it is like stepping back in time traditional Greek way of life still continues there. in the centre are 3-4 kafinions these are excellent but only serve food of an evening but if you do feel peckish there is an excellent bakery there, or you can walk another 5 mins to the beach and find tavernas which are open.
Lakones is another walk we did this will take you approx 45 mins we went via the road but there are paths up through the Olive Groves. Excellent views to be had on the walk and also at the top. Another 25 min walk from lakones brings you to Makrades another lovely Village then 2 minutes more it will lead you into Krini the views from here are amazing as well. Further 5 mins is the Anglo-Kastro with views to die for there are also two more Tavernas here.
If you do walk one bottle of water(large) will be enough as each Village has Tavernas and Shops. If you walk back the same way there is a little shop on the bend of the road approx 15 mins from main Paleo road which sells their own Home made Wine and Olive Oil we took the oil home but the Wine was drunk that evening we had the Red and Rose and also tasted the White These are un-expensive and very nice best sleep ever that night!
Monastery is also worth the walk took us about 45 mins and worth going inside.
WEATHER
First week 2-3 days unsettled with Thunder Showers and rain but it never lasted more than 1 hr good excuse for a drink rest of the week sun and warming up.
Cold of an evening for 3 nights.
Second Week was SUN SUN SUN just what you want.
If you enjoy walking you have plenty on your doorstep, we had a lovely holiday and would come back one year but still so many more places to Explore.
