" There is nothing much good we can say... "
Submitted By: Mrs M E Ashcroft
There is nothing much good we can say about the Hotel California. After three days we wanted to go home and were sorry we ever went there.
Hotel had no reps to sort out any problems. When we checked in our room we found various fault. Including safety deposit box did not lock. Shower broken. Balcony door did not lock and no sound with television. We complained and were given another room, which was totally unsuitable. It was small, had a double bed and hardly any storage space. Despite all the faults in the first room we decided to go back although nothing would be done about the faults for two days.
We were kept awake by loud music from outside until 4am every morning. Then disturbed again at 7am when the breakfast room directly above us was being set for breakfast.
As for entertainment in the hotel a pianist played one night per week if there was anyone in the bar. Only once did we see more than two people in the bar. Not surprising seeing most nights the bar was closed at 10.30.
Quite a few of the staff seemed disinterested and unhelpful. When we complained over water from the air conditioning flowing right in front of the balcony door making it awkward to get in and out safely a member of staff shrugged his shoulders held his hands in the air and nothing was done.
Breakfast was served at the poolside café. There was lots of boiled ham, cheese, fruit and croissants; hard-boiled eggs but you could not get a proper English breakfast. Bacon full of grease and no fried eggs. It would have been nice to have toast but it took to long to toast the bread.
Only good points were you could always get a good cup of tea at the poolside café and the restaurant was really nice. Candlelit three course meal. The waiter and waitress who served us were very nice. In fact the only people who worked there we could get on with. You ordered your meal the evening before and evening meals were served between 7pm and 9pm.
We could not get to the Hotel California by coach and we had to struggle with our cases from the taxi over some steps then up the steps into reception. Certainly not a suitable place for the less mobile.
I would not return to this hotel br />

" We found this Hotel to be ideally... "

We found this Hotel to be ideally located in the Old Town.

Less than a 10 min walk to the Beach and Cafes, Bars and Shops etc practically on the doorstep. The pool was nice and we had no problem with our room at all. It could be a bit noisy at night depending on where your room might be located. The evening meal was very good.

We enjoyed our stay there and are returning again this year.

I would recommend Portugal, especially to those looking for a sociable yet relaxing time. I would especially recommend it to my elders who I think would appreciate the lifestyle. The hotel I stayed at was a big surprise as I got a really good deal and I would class the hotel as a 4 star. Nearby there where about 30 restaurants which offered a fantastic range for all tastes.
There was also a very nice beach just 5min away from where I was staying and it wasn't overcrowded like some beaches can be.
If you're looking for a lovely relaxing time in a lovely country, I would definitely recommend Portugal as a great holiday destination!
